The Group has made substantial advancements in each of these areas, which it is showcasing at IAA Mobility.

Architecture: Leveraging the Group’s expertise

Architecture is a crucial part of the Volkswagen Group’s DNA and gives it a competitive advantage. The Modular Transverse Toolkit (MQB) has already produced around 45 million vehicles since 2012. With the introduction of the Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB), the Group was one of the first to adopt a platform strategy for electric vehicles (EVs). Over 1.1 million fully electric vehicles from five Group brands have been delivered on the MEB platform. The Group continues to improve the MEB platform, introducing enhanced models such as the Volkswagen ID.7, which offers a range of up to 700 kilometers. In 2025, the Group plans to launch the MEB+ platform with further improvements in range and efficiency. New all-electric models from Volkswagen, SKODA, and CUPRA will also make e-mobility more accessible to customers with prices below 25,000 Euro.

Additionally, the Group is developing its second electric platform, the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), in collaboration with Audi and Porsche. PPE will feature a powerful electric drivetrain with a range of over 600 kilometers, innovative battery and charging management, and advanced electronics architecture and software developed by CARIAD. The Audi Q6 e-tron will be the first vehicle on the PPE platform, equipped with features like augmented reality displays and a passenger display.

In the medium term, the Group plans to switch to the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) as its single future backbone for electric and electronic architecture. The SSP will provide standardization, scalability, and cost savings, with more than 40 million vehicles across all brands and segments built on this platform.

Battery & charging: Driving affordability and profitability

The Volkswagen Group is integrating battery cell development and production with PowerCo, ensuring a significant portion of the value chain for electric vehicles remains within the company. Low battery costs are essential for making e-mobility affordable. The Group aims to reduce battery costs by up to 50 percent compared to the first generation MEB by leveraging the unified cell, standardized cell factory, and innovations such as dry coating and low-cost cell chemistry without cobalt and nickel. These advancements will make e-mobility accessible to a broader range of consumers.

Software: Enhancing user experience

The Group is actively expanding its software expertise to become a leader in user experience. It focuses on three core elements: focused development, strategic partnerships, and efficient licensing. The Audi Q6 e-tron at IAA Mobility gives a preview of the new E³ 1.2 software generation. For the future E³ 2.0 software architecture, CARIAD will streamline the development process by optimizing project organization and reducing complexity. The Software Defined Vehicle Hub (SDV) will be launched to facilitate the software-centric development of vehicles by employees from CARIAD, Volkswagen, and Audi.

Mobility solutions: Investment in sustainable micromobility

The Group is expanding its mobility offerings by investing in Bike Mobility Services (BMS), a subsidiary of Pon, which is the world’s largest bicycle manufacturer. The Group aims to grow its bike leasing business globally, particularly in Europe and the USA, by capitalizing on the trend toward sustainable micromobility. The Group is also partnering with Europcar to establish a new mobility platform that will cover various mobility needs, including car-sharing and third-party services like e-scooters and public transportation.

Scott Redding and the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team secure top-four finish at Donington Park

BMW Motorrad Motorsport made significant progress at the sixth round of the 2023 FIM Superbike World Championship at Donington Park. Scott Redding and the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team achieved a top-four finish at their home race. Garrett Gerloff and the Bonovo action BMW Racing Team also performed well. However, the positive results were overshadowed by a serious accident involving Tom Sykes, Loris Baz, and Michael Ruben Rinaldi. Sykes suffered multiple rib fractures and is currently undergoing further examination at the hospital.

In the Superpole qualifying session on Saturday morning, Sykes was the highest-placed BMW rider in eighth position. Gerloff finished in tenth place, Redding in twelfth, and Baz in fifteenth. In the first race on Saturday afternoon, Redding overtook Sykes just before the finish line, securing eighth position. Sykes finished behind in ninth place. Unfortunately, Gerloff and Baz had to retire due to a crash and a technical issue, respectively.

In the Superpole race on Sunday, Gerloff improved to seventh place, and Redding finished ninth. Sykes crashed on the penultimate lap but managed to finish in 18th position. Baz also had an early fall but crossed the finish line in 23rd place. In the second main race, Redding climbed up to fourth place and defended it until the end, securing his best result of the season. Gerloff finished ninth.

The next round of the WorldSBK 2023 will take place in Imola, Italy, from July 14th to 16th.

The ABK Beer 0% BMW F 900 R Cup also took place at Donington Park as part of the WorldSBK support programme. The cup features highly competitive racing with identical BMW F 900 R Roadster bikes. Richard Cooper and Nikki Coates were among the winners in the races held over the weekend.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director, Marc Bongers, reflected on the mixed emotions of the weekend and wished a speedy recovery to Sykes and Rinaldi. Redding expressed his satisfaction with his performance, and Gerloff shared his positive experience in the Superpole race. Baz expressed disappointment but remained determined for future races.

Electric mobility is progressing rapidly, with a continuous rise in registrations of fully electric vehicles and the expansion of charging infrastructure. However, there are still many misconceptions surrounding electric vehicles. To address these misconceptions, BMW has launched a ten-part video podcast series called “Electric Myths.” Hosted by British tech enthusiast Tomi Adebayo (also known as GadgetsBoy) and transgender racing driver Charlie Martin, the podcast aims to debunk common myths and provide factual information about the advantages and possibilities of electric vehicles.

In each entertaining episode, the hosts discuss real-life anecdotes and answer questions that skeptics often have. They explore the day-to-day benefits of electric cars, their range capabilities, their cost-effectiveness, and their impact on the environment. The podcast also addresses the misconceptions surrounding hydrogen-powered vehicles and their safety.

The ten episodes will be released weekly, presenting a fun and informative way to understand electric mobility. Martin and Adebayo emphasize the enjoyable driving experience offered by electric vehicles from BMW, taking driving pleasure to a new level.

The podcast aims to create a better understanding of electric mobility without overwhelming the audience with contradicting statements. The episodes focus on lively exchanges, maintaining a modern and youthful vibe. Starting from June 22, 2023, the first two episodes will be available on BMW’s audio channels on Spotify, Apple, and Google Podcasts, as well as in video form on BMW.com and the company’s YouTube channel.

This podcast series, “Electric Myths,” follows BMW’s successful sustainability podcast, “CHASING THE GREENEST CAR.” In the previous series, environmental activist Anne Therese Gennari explores the sustainable efforts of BMW and the significance of electric mobility in reducing the company’s carbon footprint. The podcast delves into topics such as recycling, circular economy, social impact, and the future wave of innovations.

With a commitment to sustainability, the BMW Group aims to drive the transformation towards electric mobility. The company already offers fully electric models in all relevant segments and plans to increase the delivery share of all-electric vehicles to 50% by 2025 under the Neue Klasse models, while further reducing the carbon footprint over the entire product lifecycle.
