Meet Skoda Roadiaq Concept: Enyaq Electric SUV Fitted With A Bed, A Work Desk And More

From being a fairly premium electric SUV to a liveable workplace, it is the latest creation from the Skoda Vocational School

Skoda Roadiaq

Working remotely has been both a challenge and an opportunity since the pandemic struck in 2020. What if one could live the adventure without having to go off-grid? That’s the solution that has been worked on by 29 students of the Skoda Vocational School in Mlada Boleslav. Meet the Skoda Roadiaq, the ninth student concept vehicle and the first to be based on the brand’s all-electric SUV, the Skoda Enyaq iV. It has been heavily modified to act as a mobile office to meet the needs of a modern-day employee. The project was started in August 2022 and represents a total of 2000 hours of work from the students with help from numerous Skoda departments and camping equipment experts.

Here are 5 special things that you should know about the Skoda Roadiaq.

Changes Made Outside

The Roadiaq’s usability varies from being a workplace on the go to a vehicle that can be used for camping too. It gets a new roof structure and a new tailgate that allows a tent to be attached to the vehicle. This has increased the wheelbase of the Roadiaq to 2,770 mm, and height to 2,050mm. It also features 21-inch Supernova alloy wheels, and has a ground clearance of 190mm. The front end has no distinct design changes but the concept sports a cool two-tone finish of Emerald Green and Moon White.

The tent not only provides shelter in bad weather conditions, but also adds to the convenience of using the kitchen installed in the rear of the vehicle. The rear left door has been reworked and the door handle has also been removed. The sunblinds also offer more privacy inside the camper.

A Mobile Living Room

Skoda Roadiaq’s interior has been designed in such a way that it can easily be transformed into an office, and then a living space. Only the cockpit still resembles the original car this concept is based on, while the rest features numerous custom-built fittings.

Inside the rear section of the Rodiaq, a disk has been fitted to the right side complete with a 27-inch monitor and peripherals like a mouse and keyboard. It also has cabinets and power outlets for all devices. The car itself is wired up for a permanent high-speed internet connection.

On the left, there is a single bed extending till the central console, leaving a gap to the driver’s seat. Thanks to the modified roof, there is now room for storage along three sides and the usual sunroof is replaced by a smaller aperture that will also help ventilate the cabin. The bed also incorporates multiple power outlets. It also gets an espresso coffee machine which can be operated via a 12V socket. There’s even a shower attachment!

Use Of Sustainable Materials

Inside, the materials used for seat fabrics, door trims and instrument panel are fully recycled. All these are mono materials, which means only one material or fibre has been used, which makes the recycling process much easier. The cushion covers and blanket provided in the Roadiaq is made using a 3D knit technology, which is a waste-free process of weaving a product directly into a single material.

Solar Power Assistance

The Roadiaq is loaded with lots of amenities which make your life easier, but they also require enough electricity to power your needs. The vehicle also gets solar cells that help supplement the charge available for the living compartment of the vehicle, so that its driving range is not affected.

Also, an external power supply can also be used to power all the equipment inside the vehicle, which also eliminates the need to depend completely on one power source.

Battery And Range

The Skoda Roadiaq is based on the Enyaq 80x Sportline variant. It offers a WLTP claimed range of up to 495km from its 82kWh battery pack, driving the dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. The front axle uses an asynchronous electric motor which has an output of 108PS and 162Nm, while there is a synchronous electric motor which churns out 203PS and 310Nm driving the rear wheels. It has a combined peak output of 265PS and 425Nm.

The Skoda Roadiaq is an interesting concept that may not result in a new version of the Enyaq itself, but shows the potential of the various custom-built elements used for future all-electric campers. What do you think about the Skoda Roadiaq concept? Let us know in the comments.

5 Key Changes To The New 2024 Toyota Vellfire

The updated design of the Toyota Vellfire makes it easier to distinguish from its more premium sibling, the Alphard

The new Toyota Vellfire has made its international debut with updated looks and overall improvements. Given the luxury MPV is also on sale in India and enjoys a fair bit of popularity, we expect the 2024 Vellfire to make its way to our shores too. So let’s find out what the new Vellfire gets over the current version available in India.

Sporty Exterior Design

The 2024 Vellfire gets a massive front grille which looks similar to the one on the latest Toyota Land Cruiser. The headlight and DRL setup is combined and sleeker than the India-spec model’s separate units. The 2024 version also gets massive air dams which house the fog lamps.

On the sides, the new Vellfire gets a more curvy design with a Z-shaped element on the B-pillar. The 19-inch alloy wheels on the updated version come in a black shade with fewer spokes compared to the 17-inch silver alloys we get here.

The rear end now gets a flatter design and the tail lamps are reshaped and extended to the side profile. This tail lamp setup also gets a thin connecting element housing the Toyota logo, with  ‘Vellfire’ badge below. Overall, Toyota has intentionally made the Vellfire MPV look more dynamic while the more premium Alphard stands out as the formal choice.

Changes To The Cabin

The changes to the cabin, especially the cockpit, are significant. It gets a cleaner layout that wraps around the occupants with brown leather upholstery. The 2024 Vellfire gets a new steering wheel, a bigger touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital driver’s display, over the older India-spec Vellfire.

The climate and audio controls have been moved to the infotainment system and the start/stop button which in the India-spec model is on the right side closer to the door has been moved to the left top behind the steering wheel. The design of the AC vents is also different and the centre AV vents are now positioned horizontally.

Rear Seat Experience

The Vellfire, as a luxury MPV, is known for its rear seat experience, and since the previous version was already very spacious and equipped with a lot of features, the 2024 model doesn’t get many visually notable upgrades. In both versions, you get powered second-row seats with a powered ottoman and ample space. Both also get the option of rear seat entertainment screens and chauffeur controls.

But in the 2024 Vellfire, keeping rear seat comfort in mind, the space for the second and third row has been increased by 5mm and 10mm, respectively. The design of the second-row headrests is now different and the second-row passengers now get small displays on their armrests for controls. The rear seat AC vents’ housing is also bigger and stretches to the third row. Also, unlike the India-spec model, all rear AC vents in the 2024 Vellfire are placed inside the climate control unit housed in the roof.

More Powertrain Options

There is a change in the powertrain as well. The updated Vellfire comes with two engine options: a new 2.4-litre turbo petrol engine with an 8-speed automatic, and a 2.5-litre petrol hybrid engine with an eCVT gearbox. Both get the option of all-wheel drive as well as front-wheel drive systems.

The Vellfire we currently have in India only gets the 2.5-litre petrol hybrid unit with an e-CVT transmission in a four-wheel drivetrain.

Enhanced Safety

While the India-spec model already comes equipped with a host of safety features like seven airbags, brake assist, vehicle stability control (VSC), hill start assist, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and a 360-degree camera, the 2024 Vellfire brings more safety to this list with the addition of driver assistant features like remote parking, lane keep assist, steering assist, and radar-based cruise control.

These were just some of the key differences in the new Toyota Vellfire over the previous version which is currently available in India. When brought here, it would likely be priced at around Rs 1 crore given the current model is priced at Rs 96.55 lakh (ex-showroom).

Kia Carnival No Longer On Sale In India

The carmaker is still deciding on bringing the latest generation of the premium MPV to India

  • Kia India has delisted the Carnival from its website.

  • It was last offered in both 6- and 7-seater configurations.

  • The Carnival was powered by a 200PS 2.2-litre diesel engine, which hasn’t been updated to meet new Real Driving Emission (RDE) norms.

  • Towards the end of its life cycle, the Carnival had a starting price of Rs 30.99 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Kia Carnival has now been discontinued in India, as the carmaker is no longer accepting reservations for the premium MPV and it has also been taken down from the official website. Introduced in 2020, the Carnival impressed all with its premium cabin that was positioned above the likes of the Toyota Innova Crysta without having to enter the far pricier luxury MPV segment.

The Carnival which was sold here was already a previous-gen model for the manufacturer, and Kia decided not to update it to comply with the latest BS6 Phase 2 emissions norms. The Carnival was offered in both 6- and 7-seater configurations, and was available in a total of three broad variants. There was even a four-row variant at the time of launch but was discontinued shortly after. Towards the end of its lifecycle, the Carnival retailed from Rs 30.99 lakh to Rs 35.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Features It Offered

The Kia Carnival’s cabin had an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.1-inch touchscreen display for middle-row occupants, a dual-panel sunroof, and three-zone climate control. At launch, it was one of the best equipped non-luxury MPVs in India. Now, various three-row offerings from mass-market brands have caught up and passed the Carnival in terms of technology on offer.

In terms of safety, Kia’s premium MPV offered up to six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), cornering brake control and hill assist.

Engine & Transmission

The Carnival was only available with a 2.2-litre diesel engine which made 200PS and 440Nm, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Will It Return To India?

Kia showcased the facelifted fourth-generation Carnival at the 2023 Auto Expo in Delhi. It is bigger in size than the outgoing model, and has an enhanced list of features such as a bigger touchscreen and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Kia is still evaluating the market, and if all goes well, the new Kia Carnival could be launched next year.

Aehra Sedan Concept Previews Potential Rival to Porsche Taycan in 2026

Aehra, an Italian EV startup that specializes in ultra-premium electric cars, has unveiled the exterior design of its upcoming second model, the Sedan. The concept version of the Aehra Sedan was showcased at the Milano Monza Motor Show. This sedan is built on the same electric vehicle platform as the Aehra SUV, which was introduced last year. Both models were developed in parallel, and the resemblance is apparent when comparing them side by side.

The Aehra Sedan shares the same design language and body treatment as the Aehra SUV, but it has a lower stance with distinctive front and rear ends. Notable features include a sleek side profile with a smooth uninterrupted line and hidden door handles, an aggressive front end with stylish headlights and an aerodynamic sculpted bumper that incorporates active cooling elements, and a tapered rear end with sharp LED taillights. The upward-opening double-falcon doors and the aerodynamically optimized digital side mirrors are also eye-catching highlights.

While Aehra has kept the interior of the Sedan under wraps for now, it is expected to be similar to the high-tech cabin of the SUV. The SUV’s interior boasts a wide retractable screen that spans the width of the windshield and partially retracts into the dashboard.

We Took The Toyota Hilux On An Off-road Expedition!

The premium pickup is quite a desirable lifestyle offering, we find out how it handles itself on both tarmac and dirt

Toyota Hilux off-roading

The Toyota Hilux legacy began around 55 years ago and the iconic pickup truck only graced our shores in early 2022. It arrived with a hefty price tag well over Rs 30 lakh even with localised assembly as a CKD kit, putting it beyond the reach of many. As such, the Hilux has become a highly desirable lifestyle vehicle. So when Toyota invited us to join them on their first-ever Great 4x4Xpedition for a short road trip, we were thrilled to get the keys to the Hilux for all of it.

What is the 4x4Xpedition?

Given its popular range of premium off-road vehicles, Toyota has kickstarted an event that would allow its customers to experience their cars to the fullest. Hence, the creation of this new experiential event, the “Great 4x4Xpedition”.

Toyota 4x4Xpedition

As of now, this event is not exclusive to Toyota customers and open to all who wish to participate with their 4×4 cars. In this first iteration itself, the convoy of 30-odd cars included a few Mahindras too (Thar and Scorpio N). There was even a kitted-out Isuzu D-Max V-Cross

There were over ten Toyota Hilux pickups in our convoy, showing its popularity despite the pricing. They were all the top-spec variants which cost almost Rs 40 lakh on-road. Many joined us in their Fortuners while Toyota even brought along a company-owned Land Cruiser LC300.

What was the plan?

The route for this event would take us around 200 kilometres away from Bengaluru and into the hills. There, the Japanese carmaker had organised an off-road course that would showcase the full potential of the Hilux’s rugged capabilities.

Toyota 4x4Xpedition

This expedition gave us a chance to experience the Toyota Hilux pickup in a variety of driving conditions, similar to how most of its owners would use it, and more.

On the highways

The pickup is offered with a 2.8-litre diesel engine and the one we were piloting was the 6-speed manual transmission. In this variant, the diesel plant has plenty of grunt on offer, at 204PS and 480Nm. Although a manual, the torquey delivery of the powertrain made for a smooth and relaxed cruise for the 150+ kilometres of highway driving.

Toyota Hilux on highway

The pickup does offer cruise control, but there was rarely a chance to implement it given Indian driving conditions. It even gets an iMT function, but we chose to drive the Hilux as a proper three-pedal manual offering.

Thanks to its height, the Hilux has a very commanding driver’s position with a great view of the road ahead. The rear leaf springs do make the ride a bit stiff, especially for the rear passenger.

Toyota Hilux MT interior

In terms of convenience, the Hilux is a fairly premium and well-equipped offering. Its 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system was easy to use but it really should offer wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well. As the top-spec High variant, it offered the comforts of dual-zone climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and leather seat upholstery.

In the hills

The Hilux is big, and that size is even more noticeable when you take it into the narrow hilly roads. It is surprisingly dynamic through the corners despite its long body with the spacious truck bed behind the cab. Once again, the torquey nature of that large diesel engine is plenty sufficient for overtaking even on an incline. Even when the tarmac runs out, the Hilux just keeps going undeterred.

Toyota Hilux in the hills

Taking a few wrong turns meant getting familiar with the Hilux’s turning radius in those narrow spaces. Thanks to its high ground clearance, small ditches do not limit you from making room to do a full U-turn in an otherwise cramped spot.

Through the trenches

The Toyota Hilux gets 4WD as standard with on-the-fly switching. We got into the automatic variant for the off-roading course, to make life a little easier. The course was dug up specifically to be completed by the participating vehicles.

Toyota 4x4Xpedition off-road course

The first thing to do was to turn the drive control dial from 2H to 4-low to engage the low-range gearbox. It started off easy with a positive-side incline (the car is tilting towards the passenger side), followed by driving in and out of a deep ditch, and then a negative-side incline (the opposite of the first one). These are relatively mild off-roading obstacles that show off the car’s ground clearance, its approach, break-over and departure angles, and its overall stability.

Land Cruiser off-roading

Next was the articulation test which shows off the Hilux’s body rigidity. For this test, we had to engage the electronic rear differential lock. This ensures that there is no loss in power delivery when the system detects a lack of grip on any of the four wheels. With a little guidance from the experts regarding steering input to keep us from getting stuck, the Hilux makes easy work of this test. You can even stop in the middle and balance the pickup with only one tire of each axle on level ground.

Going up!

We kept the differential lock on for the next challenge as well – the hill climb. The gradient of the incline was approximated at 45 degrees with only a dirt path, but it’s not a problem for the Hilux whatsoever. Just pick your line of ascent and keep your foot down in 4-Low till you reach the top of the hill.

Toyota Hilux hill climb

What goes up…

The last challenge required the least driver input – the hill descent. The rear differential lock was disengaged and we switched on the Downhill Assist Control (or DAC as the button’s label).

Simply feather the throttle till the ground falls below your eye line and feel the car tilt over the drop, and then take both feet off the pedals. The DAC electronically applies the brakes to make sure you descend the hill in a slow and controlled manner. You can just focus on steering it in the right direction. In the case of a long descent, while driving an automatic, it is advised to switch to manual gear selection and lock it in first gear to retain maximum vehicle control.

Toyota Hilux hill descent

Through every obstacle, the Hilux gave plenty of confidence with the heavy steering and the 4WD system. It was so easy, that even my colleague who’d never done any kind of off-roading course was able to complete the course in the pickup without any hassle.

Final thoughts on the Toyota Hilux

We spent three days with the iconic Toyota pickup, covering close to 500km in total. In every scenario, from the driver’s seat, the Hilux was hard to fault. The thrust of that massive diesel engine is somewhat addictive, it feels stable at highway speeds and is relatively nimble when you need it to be. Its off-roading prowess comes as no surprise, but the actual usability across scenarios was impressive.

Toyota Hilux Rear

If there’s one thing that makes the Hilux a bit difficult to live with as a city dweller, it’s the size. Yes, it does have front and rear parking sensors that are quite helpful in tight spots and while parking, but it’s always a bit stressful through crowded city streets if you are not used to the size.

The Toyota Hilux is not a substitute replacement for conventional full-size SUVs. It’s an adventurous choice and one that many of us would like to be able to make.
