2023 SOUTHWICK NATIONAL MX RESULTS

The 2023 Southwick National MX took place at The Wick 338 in Massachusetts and marked the halfway point of the AMA Pro Motocross season. The Lawrence brothers, Jett and Hunter, have been dominant in the 450 and 250 classes respectively. However, there was a break in their streak in the last race when Hunter crashed in the first turn of moto two, resulting in a win for Haiden Deegan and shaking up the championship standings.

In the 250 qualifying, there was an unexpected turn of events as James DeCotis set the fastest time in his first attempt of the entire season, outpacing the A session riders Justin Cooper and Hunter Lawrence. Jett Lawrence continued his impressive performance in the 450 class, setting a time over 2 seconds faster than Chase Sexton in second place.

Vauxhall Showcases Latest Electric Vehicles at 49th National Association of Police Fleet Managers’ Conference

Vauxhall displays its latest electric vehicle range at the 49th National Association of Police Fleet Managers’ Conference
The conference reaffirms Vauxhall’s position as a supplier to the UK’s Police Forces

Vauxhall is currently exhibiting its latest range of electric vehicles at the 49th National Association of Police Fleet Managers’ Conference (NAPFM) in Telford on July 4th and 5th.

The brand is showcasing its diverse and expanding range of electric vehicles, including a marked Corsa Electric patrol car, Vivaro Electric cell van, and the upcoming Astra Electric. Vauxhall’s special vehicle operations team, led by Richard Abbott, Head of Specialist Fleet, will also be present at the event.

Vauxhall’s participation in the conference underscores its longstanding association with the UK’s Police Forces. As police fleets across the country transition to electric vehicles at a rapid pace, Vauxhall has become a key partner to a number of forces. Starting from next year, Vauxhall will offer an electric version of every vehicle in its lineup and will become an electric-only manufacturer by 2028.

Currently, over 100 Vivaro Electric vans are in use by police forces in the UK, with the first ones deployed over a year ago. In addition, more than 200 Corsa Electric vehicles have been utilized as neighborhood patrol cars since 2021. The upcoming release of the Astra Electric has also generated interest among police forces, ahead of its arrival later this summer.

Prior to its release, the Astra Electric is being modified by fleet specialists to suit police requirements.

2023 REDBUD NATIONAL MX RESULTS

It’s the Fourth of July weekend, so it must be RedBud! The 2023 National MX season resumed after a short break. Some new faces joined the show with Chase Sexton and Jason Anderson back in action. “I’ve been wearing myself out the last few weeks to be as ready as I can be,” said Anderson. “I have about 7 or 8 days on the bike.”

“I would say I’m closer to 100 percent than I was a Pala,” said Sexton. Unfortunately the program lost Cooper Webb, who was injured in a practice crash. And, of course, Ken Roczen was in the U.K. competing in the opening round of WSX.

Once the 450 racing was underway, none of the additional competition seemed to bother Jett Lawrence. it was business as usual, with the Honda rider pulling both holeshots and establishing a solid lead. In moto one, Ty Masterpool did an amazing job of holding down second until Chase Sexton overtook him. Then he tangled with Adam Ciaciarulo and both riders went down. In the second moto, Masterpool was up front briefly, but a train of factory riders overtook him. Dylan Ferrandis seemed to be stronger in the end of that race and made second place his own.

The 250 race stated off looking like it might be Hunter Lawrence’s best race yet. He pulled the first holeshot and was never challenged, while Haiden Deegan was second. In the second race, however, Hunter went down in the first turn and and just like that, the Lawrence win streak was broken. Levi Kitchen won the race while second place was a battle between Deegan and Tom Vialle. Vaille eventually passed Deegan for the runner-up spot, but it was Deegan’s first overall victory with a 2-3 score. Hunter Lawrence reportedly has no serious injuries and maintains the series point lead.

Traffic Deaths In US Decreased in Q1 2023, down Approximately 3.3%: Report

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) anticipates a reduction in traffic fatalities for the year 2023. According to their estimates, there were approximately 9,330 deaths in the first quarter, indicating a 3.3% decline compared to the same period in 2022. This marks the fourth consecutive quarterly decrease following seven quarters of increasing fatalities since the third quarter of 2020.

Despite a 2.6% rise in the number of miles driven by vehicles, the estimated fatality rate for the first quarter of 2023 decreased to 1.24 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles, down from the projected rate of 1.32 in 2022. Similar to 2022, where the NHTSA reported a drop from 1.37 fatalities per 100 vehicle miles in 2021, this decrease indicates a positive trend in traffic safety.

Pete Buttigieg, the United States Transportation Secretary, expressed optimism about the ongoing decline in traffic deaths, which have been steadily decreasing since the peak of the pandemic. He emphasized the necessity of sustained efforts to solidify and continue this positive trend.

Ann Carlson, the NHTSA Chief Counsel, recognized the progress made but highlighted the persisting problem of preventable crashes. She underscored the agency’s dedication to reducing traffic fatalities through various initiatives, including the advancement of new vehicle standards, investment in infrastructure and roadway safety, and collaboration with state and local partners to promote safe driving decisions.

To address the issue of traffic fatalities and severe injuries, the Department of Transportation (DOT) introduced the National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS), which adopts a safe system approach focusing on safer roads, individuals, vehicles, speeds, and post-crash care. This strategy is supported by unprecedented safety funding through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, including the Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program.

The DOT has also implemented several initiatives to enhance roadway safety, such as proposing changes for advanced pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), upgrades to the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) with the introduction of a Pedestrian Protection Program, and regulations related to rear impact guards. Additionally, the DOT is gathering more data on crashes involving automated driving systems and advanced driver assistance systems. It is also conducting Vulnerable Road User Safety Assessments and establishing work groups to issue reports and advance roadway design models.

A recent two-year investigation conducted by the US Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General revealed shortcomings in the NHTSA’s handling of recalls and safety investigations. The investigation highlighted inconsistencies in documenting information and completing preliminary investigations within the organization’s target timelines.

NHTSA Pushes for Auto Emergency Braking to Become Standard on Big Trucks and Buses

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently proposed a new rule that would require automatic emergency braking (AEB) on passenger vehicles. Now, the agency is expanding its reach by suggesting that the same rule apply to heavy-duty trucks and buses weighing over 10,000 pounds.

According to NHTSA estimates, this technology could save around 155 lives per year and prevent over 8,800 injuries. The agency’s data shows that approximately 60,000 heavy-duty vehicles are involved in rear-end crashes, and implementing this technology could potentially prevent more than 19,000 of these accidents annually.

Passenger vehicles would also benefit greatly from this technological advancement. NHTSA believes that requiring AEB on all passenger vehicles traveling at speeds up to 62 miles per hour could save a minimum of 340 lives each year and reduce injuries by 24,000.

A study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in 2022 found that pickup trucks equipped with AEB had a 43% lower rate of causing rear-end collisions and a 42% reduction in related injuries. Interestingly, only 8% of registered pickups in 2021 came with AEB as a standard feature. However, several major automakers, including Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Ram, Toyota, Nissan, and Honda, now offer trucks with AEB systems as standard.

While technology like AEB undoubtedly saves lives and minimizes injuries, a separate study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also revealed that vehicles equipped with crash prevention technology, including AEB, can be more challenging to repair. The research found that approximately half of the surveyed individuals encountered issues with these features even after completing repairs, raising concerns about their reliability and potentially increasing repair costs over time.

If the proposal for both passenger cars and heavy-duty vehicles is approved, it would take three years for the ruling to go into effect. However, NHTSA has not specified when a final decision will be made, so it may take several more years before customers see these changes implemented in new vehicles, regardless of size, as automakers continue to enhance standard safety features in their latest models.

Twitter Faces $250 Million Lawsuit Over Alleged Music Copyright Violations

The National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) has filed a lawsuit against Twitter, seeking damages of $150,000 for each of the approximately 1,700 songs it claims have been infringed upon. The allegations made in the lawsuit are strong, with the NMPA stating that “Twitter knows perfectly well that neither it nor users of the Twitter platform have secured licenses for the rampant use of music being made on its platform.” Alongside the monetary damages, the NMPA is also asking the court to immediately stop Twitter’s copyright-infringing activities.

It is worth noting that the NMPA asserts that it has sent formal notices regarding copyright infringement to Twitter since 2021, resulting in over 300,000 tweets being flagged for violating copyright laws. Additionally, other copyright holders have reportedly sent hundreds of thousands of similar notices to Twitter. However, the lawsuit alleges that Twitter consistently disregards known repeat infringers and the infringements themselves.

The lawsuit accuses Twitter of failing to take action by removing the problematic content or preventing public access to it. According to the lawsuit, “Twitter views itself, not the law, as the arbiter of what content is permitted on the Twitter platform.” At the time of writing, neither Twitter nor its new CEO Linda Yaccarino has made a statement regarding the matter. This lawsuit deals a significant blow to Twitter, especially considering the cost-cutting measures it has implemented recently – including laying off two-thirds of its workforce – in its pursuit of profitability. Furthermore, it sets a potentially detrimental precedent for Elon Musk’s ambitions of transforming Twitter into a creative content hub.

Jeep Recalls Over 330,000 Grand Cherokees Due to Potential Spring Detachment

Jeep Grand Cherokee owners, be aware: a new recall has been issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a potentially dangerous issue. The recall focuses solely on the Jeep Grand Cherokee and affects 331,401 SUVs that were manufactured in 2021. The rear springs of the vehicles could detach and come off while driving, posing a significant risk to drivers and passengers.

The recall applies to both standard Grand Cherokee and stretched Grand Cherokee L models, but only to those without an air suspension system. Specifically, the recall (NHTSA ID 23V-413) cites 114,302 Grand Cherokees at possible risk, with the remaining 217,099 models being Grand Cherokee L. The production dates of the recall go back to December 5, 2020, on the L, encompassing the model years 2021 through 2023. Production dates are even more recent for the Grand Cherokee, starting on May 17, 2021, and going through 2022 and 2023 model years. The production period for both ends on May 31, 2023.

Even though the results looked the same, the third round of the 2023 AMA National Motocross season had a slightly different flavor. Up front, the Lawrence bothers each made it three in a row, but the 450 class showcased several privateers who are breaking out of their assigned roles to mix it up with the factory guys. Most notably, Ty Masterpool overcame a first turn crash to eventually catch the front runners. The 250 class had yet another first moto winner proving that he can be a threat for the championship. Justin Cooper won the moto and was leading the second when he fell. That gave the overall to Hunter Lawrence, but by no means did he dominate the race. THE FANTOMAS DS TAKES TO THE AIR AGAIN

To commemorate the opening of the “On the move with Louis de Funès” exhibition at the Musée National de l’Automobile – Collection Schlumpf in Mulhouse, DS Automobiles is unveiling the drawing for a design inspired by the flying car from the “Fantomas unleashed” film
Created by the DS DESIGN STUDIO PARIS, this DS reveals wings and a tailfin, as in the film that came out in 1965
Louis de Funès appeared in numerous films with various DS models.

Le Musée National de l’Automobile – Collection Schlumpf is celebrating the iconic cars from the Louis de Funès films in a temporary exhibition open from 5 April to 5 November 2023.

The exhibition brings together cars seen in the films, including the DS, with posters, photos and props.

DS Automobiles is taking part in this celebration with the Louis de Funès Museum by creating a unique drawing that’s a modern adaptation of the DS from “Fantomas unleashed”.

Alongside Jean Marais, Louis de Funès and Mylène Demongeot, the DS was one of the biggest stars of the second part of the Fantomas trilogy, notably for descending the strips of Vesuvius choreographed by Rémy Julienne, and the final escape in the flying DS, with retractable wings.

“DS made history beyond the car industry. It is part of French heritage and as such, holds an important place in French cinema. We answered the request from the Louis de Funès Museum by designing a modern DS in tribute to the Fantomas DS. Geoffrey Rossillon, in the exterior design team led by Frédéric Soubirou, created the drawing.”
