Posh rental automobiles: do you actually get extra on your cash?

Think rental automobile and ranks of mainstream hatchbacks spring to thoughts – vanilla autos for that fast enterprise journey or quick break and, when completed with, discarded like a spent espresso cup.

Not all rental automobiles are the identical, nevertheless. In addition to the Kia Picantos, Nissan Qashqais and the remaining, a few of the main rental firms can provide extra upmarket autos, though, as I discovered, availability might be contact and go and chances are you’ll merely be supplied ‘something similar’.

Fortunately, this isn’t the case with Avis Prestige, a specialist in supplying high-value rental automobiles at a lot of the main airports in addition to from its central London base.

At any time, its automobiles embrace Volvos, Mercedes, Audis, Land Rovers, Range Rovers and Jaguars, plus a tempting number of Porsches. Some of the automobiles, usually Volvos and Audis, you’re extra more likely to see among the many bread-and-butter leases at, for instance, Avis’s Heathrow depot the place, away from the economy-class travellers being served on the common reserving terminals, Prestige prospects get pleasure from their very own reception space.

Whether they select to rent a Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake or a Porsche 911, they obtain the identical excessive stage of service, together with a private ‘meet and greet’ on arrival.

The firm’s extra upmarket autos are typically delivered to the place prospects need them. For this motive, with solely 350 automobiles out there for the UK (to place that into context, on a typical day Avis Heathrow has round 500 common leases on web site), recognizing one thing comparable to an Avis Prestige 911 parked among the many Corsas and Golfs at Heathrow, Manchester or Edinburgh airports is a job for a aircraft spotter.

For an extended weekend, the associated fee to hire a Range Rover P440e PHEV, for instance, is £1016, though for a Porsche Cayenne Hybrid it’s far much less, at £513. “Some of our customers are successful business people and tourists,” Prestige’s Chris Domoney tells me.

“They might own expensive cars so expect to enjoy the same comfort and performance when they’re away. Others are ex-pats returning to visit family and friends, London residents who don’t own a car and want something different to head out of town for the weekend and golfers heading to play at Gleneagles or St Andrews. A few are customers considering buying a similar car and who want more than a 30-minute test drive.”

10 Fast Facts About The Kia EV9

# 10 Fast Facts About The Kia EV9

As fewer and fewer four-door sedans, hatchbacks, and sports cars roam the streets, a surplus of gargantuan SUVs flood the roads. After all, SUVs are one of the most practical vehicles that money can buy. On top of that, the world is still moving away from internal combustion engines in favor of electrification.

[Electric cars](https://www.topspeed.com/history-of-electric-vehicles/) are, generally speaking, cheaper to run than their gasoline-fed equivalents and provide you with an ample amount of immediate torque. Therefore, even base-model electric cars provide adequate performance in everyday use.

One of the world’s most impressive Korean automakers, [Kia](https://www.topspeed.com/tag/kia), unveiled what they think the answer will be for a large family who wants to experience a cutting-edge modern SUV. It’s called the [Kia EV9](https://www.topspeed.com/tag/kia-ev9), and if it’s anything like the [2023 Kia EV6 GT](https://www.topspeed.com/2023-kia-ev6-gt-review), other automakers need to pull up their socks.

Being larger than its mid-size SUV, the [Kia Telluride](https://www.topspeed.com/tag/kia-telluride), the EV9 comes offering even more space. However, it has a difficult mission ahead, which is to successfully make a dent in the segment, grabbing a share of the pie from established competitors such as [Tesla](https://www.topspeed.com/tag/tesla), and other EV brands such as [Rivian](https://www.topspeed.com/tag/rivian), and even [Lucid, with its anticipated Gravity SUV](https://www.topspeed.com/everything-to-know-lucid-gravity), bound to hit the market late next year. The EV9 is looking to be a real contender though, and here are some facts you need to know about it.

Key Takeaways

  • Maruti dominates the non-SUV sales list with a diverse lineup of cars in India. The only model added to the top monthly sellers list with the removal of SUVs is the Maruti XL6, which is a premium version of the Ertiga MPV.

  • Toyota is the next most popular brand in India right now with the Innova MPV, coming in at the eighth spot. It is important to note that this tally includes sales of both the Toyota Innova Hycross (petrol and hybrid) as well as Toyota Innova Crysta (diesel-only).

  • The Hyundai i20 premium hatchback came in at the ninth spot with 7,212 units sold, beating the Tata Altroz which sold just under 6,000 units and is eleventh on this list.

  • The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios hatchback was the 10th best selling car of the previous month, with over 6,500 units sold, which is more than 3 times higher for the same month as its rival, the Maruti Swift.

  • The Tata Tiago was also popular, clearing the 5,000 sales mark in October 2023.

  • The Kia Carens, a premium alternative to the Maruti Ertiga, also cleared the 5,000 monthly sales mark.

  • The last hatchback on this list is the Toyota Glanza, which is essentially a rebadged version of the Maruti Baleno with the same features and powertrains.

When we included SUVs while looking at the best-selling models of October 2023, even the 15th most popular model enjoyed a demand of over 11,000 units. However, it seems no other model was able to even come close to the 10,000 unit sales mark, highlighting the preferences of the SUV body shape among Indian car buyers.

Vauxhall Astra

Vauxhall/Opel’s product planners acknowledge that in today’s SUV- and crossover-dominated market, traditional hatchbacks need to be designed with a different approach. In 2022, there are plenty of options available for those seeking a more spacious, versatile, and convenient compact car compared to the new Vauxhall Astra.

Due to this, the Astra designers focused more on aesthetic appeal rather than cabin packaging, unlike their predecessors.

While the success of this philosophy can be judged from the car’s exterior, its consequences are also evident in the cabin. The Astra now has a lower driving position and is lower-slung than before. Although the front occupant space is generous, the second-row space is less compared to the previous model. Our measurements show that the typical rear legroom is 680mm, which is 20mm less than the Mk7 Astra we tested in 2015. Additionally, the rear headroom is slightly insufficient for taller adults to travel comfortably, even though the rear doors provide easy access.

Although the estate version has a 57mm longer wheelbase, it doesn’t seem to have gained much rear occupant space as the rear legroom is the same. However, the estate offers more generous headroom. As expected, the estate variant has a much larger boot space, measuring 597 litres for the petrol version (compared to 422 litres in the hatchback) or 516 litres in the hybrids (352 litres in the hatch).

In terms of the interior, you can see the effects of the “digital detox” that the Astra has undergone. The previously button-heavy dashboard has been integrated with a digital instrument screen known as the “Pure Panel,” which extends from the driver’s side of the fascia to the center console. Vauxhall aims to position the Astra as a technologically advanced vehicle, and it succeeds to a large extent. The car comes with driver-customizable digital clocks, a 10.0-inch infotainment system with wireless smartphone mirroring, factory navigation by TomTom, wireless device charging, and a head-up display on top trims (not available in the mid-level GS Line car).

Although the plasticky-looking Pure Panel design may not be visually appealing, Vauxhall’s decision to retain physical controls for functions like temperature, audio volume control, and demist is undoubtedly the right one. The overall dashboard layout of the Astra is smart and incorporates colorful accents. However, the material quality falls slightly below the standards of its class, and cabin storage varies from generous (glovebox and armrest cubby) to frustratingly limited (obstructed door pockets).

The Astra is equipped with a 10.0-inch PureConnect infotainment system that includes standard TomTom navigation. It also offers wireless device mirroring for both Apple and Android devices. The car comes with a one-year data connectivity subscription, which can be extended for an additional fee.

Maruti Swift Vs Hyundai Grand i10 Nios – Space And Practicality Compared

Let’s see which one of these hatchbacks has the practicality to become your first car

These two hatchbacks have been battling each other for over a decade now. While the Swift debuted back in 2005, the Grand i10 was bought in two years after that. Since then, both the hatchbacks have been through generation upgrades but they both continue to rival for the exact same reason – Can it be your family’s first car? Let’s find that out in the space and practicality review:

Looks

Maruti Swift & Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

I believe this is a clear cut answer. Maruti Swift definitely looks much more handsome than the two, and in fact, is the sportiest looking hatchback for its price range. The Grand i10 Nios rather flaunts its modern and stylish looks.

Maruti Swift & Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Side

In terms of visual elements, both the hatches sport big grilles, LED DRLs, 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, and LED tail lamps. The Swift additionally packs LED headlamps, while the Nios gets some extra bling with the chrome door handles.

Maruti Swift & Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Rear

Park both of them besides each other and the Nios definitely looks bigger. However, on paper, it is smaller than the Swift but its roundish appearance and roof rails gives it the bigger hatch look. This might appeal more to the mature and aged buyers, while the Swift would cater the tastebuds of enthusiasts and young buyers.

Boot Space

Maruti Swift Boot Space

The Maruti Swift has a more practical boot space, as it can fit bigger suitcases than the Grand i10 Nios. Our regular boot space testing equipment consists of three different-sized suitcases and two duffle bags. The Swift was able to fit the largest and smallest suitcase along with two duffle bags, but we had to swap the largest one for the medium suitcase in case of the Nios.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Boot Space

The i10’s back seat is more reclined, which slightly reduces the loading space and pushes the suitcases more towards the boot lid. The larger floor board of the Swift also helps in liberating more usable space.

Maruti Swift 60:40 Split

Maruti offers 60:40 split seat for the Swift, which is another advantage and makes it a more practical option for loading additional luggage.

Interior

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Cabin

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios’ cabin is more premium and stylish to look at. The interior has a more expensive car experience and the 3D dashboard pattern gives it an upmarket feel. It’s light-coloured dual-tone interior shade also makes the cabin look airy. The touch points and quality of materials feel better in the Nios.

Maruti Swift Cabin

The all-black theme of the Swift, however, feels sporty. The switches and plastics could have had a better quality here, which on the Nios feel more polished. I personally do like certain elements like the rotary AC knobs, flat-bottom steering wheel, and analogue cluster with red accents styling of the Swift, which give it that slightly quirky vibe.

The Nios and Swift are adequately equipped with features, enough for your daily usage. Hyundai cars are far better than most of their rivals, when it’s about the quality of the touchscreen system. Even in the case of the Grand i10 Nios, its 8-inch display is smoother and more easy to operate.

Maruti Swift Touchscreen Infotainment System

However, there’s a good ergonomic quality of the Swift, as we see its touchscreen system slightly tilted towards the driver. Ideally, you shouldn’t take your eyes off the road and play with the infotainment, but its tilted nature will be better for the driver.

Both of them get feel good features like automatic AC, cruise control, and a push button start-stop along with the convenience of a height adjustable driver’s seat.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Wireless Phone Charger

Being a Hyundai, the Grand i10 Nios is simply a more feature-rich offering here. You get additional niceties like a wireless phone charger, ambient foot lighting, and a cooled glove box. The presence of rear AC vents and rear USB charger will elevate the experience for the rear seat passengers.

Cabin Practicality

Both the hatchbacks cover the basics of cabin practicality – storage spaces in the centre console, bottle holders on all four doors, and a phone docking space. The Nios’ cabin, however, is more practical with an additional storage compartment over the glove box and a bigger phone docking space.

Both of them get two cupholders in the front, but the Nios can still manage to fit 1-litre bottles in those spaces. The Swift’s cupholders are placed ahead of the gear lever and are limited in depth, which restricts you to only place takeaway coffees from Starbucks or Mcdonalds.

In case of cabin practicality, fit and finish, and features, the Grand i10 Nios is definitely a better option.

Rear Seat Experience

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Rear Seats

The Grand i10 Nios establishes itself as an all-rounder with better rear seat experience. The seats are more comfortable and reclined, which helps passengers in being relaxed on long journeys.

The seat base is bigger on the Nios and with more knee room, headroom, and leg room, six foot passengers would be more comfortable here. The larger windows offer better visibility and overall, you feel that the cabin is airy to be seated in.

Maruti Swift Rear Seats

The Swift’s extra width helps it being a better place for three people abreast. Not significantly, but by a minor difference. That said, both the hatchbacks are better off as being four-seaters because three people would feel cramped.

Talking about rear seat practicality, Swift gets smaller 500ml holders for the rear passengers, whereas the Nios gets narrow 1-litre holders. Instead of rear AC vents, the Maruti hatch gets a small bottle/cupholder, missing out even on a 12V socket. For extra comfort of rear passengers, the Nios gets rear AC vents, which would be very helpful if three people are cramped at the back.

Safety

Both the hatchbacks have secured weak ratings in the global NCAP crash tests. The latest version of the Swift has been tested as per the updated NCAP protocols, where it received 1 star rating for adult and child occupants’ protection.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Airbags

The pre-facelift version of the Nios was crash tested as per the earlier NCAP protocols, scoring two stars. The current version gets six airbags (four airbags standard), which would further improve the safety of the facelift by a margin.

Maruti Swift Airbags

In terms of safety features, the hatchbacks get hill hold assist, electronic stability program, rear parking camera, and ISOFIX child seat mounts. The Nios is the clear winner here with more airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, and vehicle stability management. The addition of a tyre pressure monitor is very helpful for long distance journeys.

Ride And Comfort

The firmer suspension setup of the Maruti Swift helps in its sportier nature. While it transfers some discomfort of the potholes and undulations inside the cabin, it feels more planted and composed at higher speeds.

Maruti Swift

Show the Swift some curves and turns and you’ll realise, it’s a hoot to drive. The driving characteristics are sporty enough to awaken the enthusiast inside you. The steering feedback is also on-point as you feel very confident while tackling high speed turns. I personally would pick the Swift purely for its driving dynamics.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

And then we have the Nios, which has a family-friendly softer suspension. It feels comfortable over bad surfaces and potholes at lower speeds. However, if the speed is higher, the Nios will force you to slow down. You will feel more uncomfortable here and there’s a louder thud sound as well.

The light steering wheel of the Nios is perfect for the driving in the city. It also weighs up as you start reaching the triple digit speeds, but the feedback still isn’t good enough for spritted driving. So, while going on curves and high speed turns, it doesn’t feel as spirited and confident as the Swift.

Engine And Performance

Maruti Swift Engine

The Maruti Swift is a better car to drive, when it comes to sheer performance. Both are smooth and easy to drive around the city and pack enough punch for quick overtakes at lower speeds. But when it comes to highway driving, the Swift feels quicker to reach triple digit speeds. High speed overtakes are also much easier with the Maruti hatchback.

Engine refinement is brilliant in both the hatchbacks, but at higher RPMS, the Nios starts sounding harsher. The throaty engine note of the Swift adds to its sportiness.

Maruti Swift AMT

For the convenience of a driver, both the hatchbacks can be opted with an AMT transmission as well. Mileage-oriented buyers can also look out for their CNG variants.

Verdict

Maruti Swift And Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Maruti Swift, both are good enough to be your first family cars. But, the Nios proves to be a better all-rounder than the Swift. Firstly, It undercuts its rival by Rs 50,000, making it a more affordable but premium offering. On top, it offers a better cabin experience, more practical storage spaces, and features. For a family, it is better than the Swift. But, if you are a keen driver and want sporty performance, handling and looks from your daily driver, then the Swift is a no brainer.
