Ferrari’s Influence on the Creation of the Aston Martin Valkyrie

In a recent interview with Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner by Dax Shepard, it was revealed that the Aston Martin Valkyrie was almost a Ferrari. The development of this extraordinary road car was primarily driven by the desire to retain star Red Bull designer Adrian Newey, who was being courted by Ferrari.

Adrian Newey is renowned as one of the most successful engineers in the history of Formula One. His expertise has led to twelve World Constructors’ Championship victories, and he has played a pivotal role in transforming struggling teams such as Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull through his innovative design solutions.

From 2010 to 2013, Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel dominated Formula One, winning four consecutive constructors’ championships. However, when F1 transitioned to the hybrid era in 2014, Mercedes became the dominant force, securing the championship title from 2014 to 2021. Red Bull only reclaimed the top position in 2022 after a period of relative struggle. It was during these challenging years that Ferrari began pursuing Adrian Newey.

Extreme E to Introduce Hydrogen-Powered Off-Road Race Series in 2025

Extreme E organizers have announced the launch of a new hydrogen-powered category, called Extreme H, in 2025. This will mark the first time a FIA world championship will use hydrogen as a fuel source. The Extreme H category will feature the same off-road SUV-styled buggies as the current Extreme E series, but with an electric powertrain replaced by a hydrogen version, possibly employing a hydrogen fuel cell system.

Alejandro Agag, founder of Extreme E, has previously expressed plans to run Extreme H alongside Extreme E, following the same format. Both series will hold events on off-road courses in extreme locations impacted by climate change. Each team consists of a female and male driver who switch mid-race.

Extreme E has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with the FIA to establish Extreme H as an official FIA championship by 2025. At the same time, Extreme E itself will gain official FIA recognition, becoming an officially recognized series. Once specific criteria are met, Extreme H will become an official FIA world championship starting from 2026. Only seven series, including the electric Formula E world championship, hold this prestigious title.

Extreme E founder Alejandro Agag has expressed his excitement about this development, stating, “This announcement is a significant first step in the development of our championship and our ground-breaking transition to hydrogen-powered racing. Sport is the most powerful and effective platform to drive innovation, and our commitment to delivering sustainable motorsport championships, full of excitement and with a reduced carbon footprint, is testament to that.”

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has also voiced his support, emphasizing the FIA’s goal of utilizing sustainable power sources in motorsport. He stated, “Using sustainable power sources in motorsport is the key objective of the FIA and part of our long-term strategy, and this series is an ideal showcase for that. Hydrogen is an important part of that mix, and we have developed a set of safety regulations for hydrogen-powered vehicles, which is part of the FIA’s International Sporting Code.”

The new Extreme H category will be able to leverage the existing infrastructure at Extreme E events. Typically, electricity to power the cars is generated on site using solar panels, with the energy then converted into hydrogen and utilized to power electricity generators.

Fisker confirms a high-performance version of the Pear EV

Fisker, the American EV start-up, has officially announced the development of a high-performance variant of its electric hatchback, the Fisker Pear. This version, known as the Pear Extreme, is expected to deliver impressive performance due to its dual-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrain.

Although specific performance targets have not been confirmed by Fisker, it is highly anticipated that the Pear Extreme will significantly improve on the regular Pear’s claimed 0-60mph sprint time of 6.3 seconds.

For comparison, Fisker’s larger SUV model, the Fisker Ocean Extreme, features a total power output of 564bhp and 544lb ft, thanks to a 275bhp motor on each axle. This allows the 2434kg SUV to accelerate from 0-60mph in an impressive 4.0 seconds.

Industry experts at Autocar believe that the Pear Extreme will be positioned as a direct competitor to the £36,495 MG 4 XPower. The MG model is equipped with a dual-motor powertrain capable of delivering 429bhp, enabling it to sprint from 0-60mph in just 3.7 seconds. This makes it faster than the entry-level Porsche Taycan and on par with the Taycan GTS.

The Pear Extreme is also expected to feature a larger battery than the regular Pear, which currently offers a claimed range of 348 miles. However, the increased power and performance of the high-performance model may result in a reduced range compared to the standard variant.

Additionally, high-end versions of the Pear will include a solar-panelled roof, similar to the Fisker Ocean, enabling passive charging to extend the range. On the other hand, the cheapest variant of the Pear will come with a smaller battery pack, offering a claimed range of 198 miles.

Fisker predicts that the entry-level variant, a rear-wheel-drive model, will be the most popular option. It will be priced from $29,900 in the US (before incentives), approximately £23,500. However, the UK price is expected to be slightly higher due to local taxes and shipping costs from the factory in Ohio, US, operated by Taiwanese tech giant Foxconn.

Fisker Inc founder, Henrik Fisker, believes that in the next two years, people will realize that they do not necessarily need long-range capabilities, especially if they have a second car. He cites the slow sales of cars with 100- to 150-mile ranges as proof of this changing mindset.

COLTON HAAKER’S FACTORY HUSKY 2-STROKE

Colton Haaker, an accomplished rider in Extreme Enduro racing, relies on a specially built Husqvarna TE300i for his races. We spoke with his mechanic, Andrew Bauer, to get the details on this impressive machine.

Despite its similar appearance to a standard bike at a dealership, Haaker’s race bike is finely tuned for the extreme challenges it will face. Bauer emphasizes that it’s the attention to detail that sets this bike apart.

Unlike some other race bikes, Haaker’s TE300i prioritizes usable power over sheer horsepower. The engine is created by Husqvarna’s Factory Services department, but many internal parts are stock. The bike’s EFI mapping can be adjusted based on the terrain and weather conditions of each event. Haaker also utilizes a FMF exhaust system for optimal performance.

In long endurance races like Extreme Enduros, the chassis setup is crucial. Haaker’s bike features WP Pro Components tuned by WP Suspension USA and Austria. This balance allows Haaker to navigate obstacles at varying speeds.

Another noteworthy aspect of Haaker’s bike is the tire setup. He uses a soft rear mousse and Dunlop gummy compound tire for excellent traction in any terrain and condition. The front tire is a combination of Dunlop MX33 and MX53 with a durable tube.

In Extreme Enduro races, protection is crucial both for the rider and the bike. Haaker’s bike utilizes a full-coverage skid plate, safety-wired nuts and bolts, reinforced parts, and specialized protective gear.

Other notable components on Haaker’s bike include WP Suspension’s Pro Components cone-valve fork, Trax rear shock, Guts Racing lightweight seat foam, Guts Racing gripper seat cover, ProTaper sprockets, ProTaper handlebars, ProTaper grips, Hunt Racing rear rotor guard, RK O-ring chain, Twin Air filters, Decal Works graphics, and Motion Pro specialty tools.

Even with all the preparation and top-of-the-line components, mechanical failures can occur. Haaker benefits from the support of Husqvarna, his team manager, mechanic, and family. With an impressive track record, it’s evident that Haaker has found a winning formula.

McLaren Solus GT: 830bhp V10-powered monster tops Shootout

All 25 units of the McLaren Solus GT, an extreme track machine with a price tag of over £3 million each, have already been sold. Owners will also receive a travel case for transporting the car to events organized by McLaren.

The CEO of McLaren Automotive, Michael Leiters, described the Solus GT as a realization of a radical concept vehicle originally designed for virtual racing. He emphasized that the car was engineered without any restrictions and represents McLaren’s pioneering spirit.

These engineering freedoms influenced the design of the Solus GT. It features various aerodynamic elements, including a wide front splitter, ground-effect venturi tunnels in the structural floor, a fixed high-downforce rear wing, and individual wheel pods.

According to McLaren, the wheel pods help reduce weight and control airflow, minimizing turbulence and pressure build-up in the wheel well. They also serve as reference points for the driver when positioning the car on the track.

The Solus GT features double-wishbone suspension arms at the front and back, similar to those used in Formula 1. These arms are enclosed in aerodynamic carbon fiber shrouds.

Koenigsegg Gemera: A 2,300 Horsepower Hybrid V8 Monster

The Koenigsegg Gemera HV8 is set to become the most powerful and extreme production car on the planet, according to Christian von Koenigsegg, the founder and CEO of the company. While it’s yet to be seen if it can live up to those claims, on paper, the Gemera is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with. Koenigsegg plans to start production of the Gemera next year at its Griper Atelier facility, with shipments expected to begin in 2025.

Unsurprisingly, upgrading to the V8 model comes at a price. The Egg Registry reports that Koenigsegg will charge $400,000 for this trim. However, for those not seeking the power of a V8 “mega car” for their daily errands and groceries, Koenigsegg offers a more modest triple-cylinder configuration that still packs an impressive 1,400hp.

Koenigsegg aims to produce 300 units of the Gemera, which is a relatively generous number considering the brand’s history. The Gemera will feature a four-wheel drive system and a nine-speed gearbox, regardless of the engine configuration chosen. Koenigsegg will also provide a Ghost Package for those who prefer a sportier appearance. While the price for this package is unknown, rumors suggest that the Gemera will start at $1.7 million.

How to Enable Google Chrome’s New Design Refresh

Google Chrome’s new design refresh, called Chrome Refresh 2023, brings some noticeable changes without completely overhauling the browser. Here’s how you can enable it:

1. The address bar, also known as the “Omnibox,” has been updated. It is now thicker and the text inside it appears smaller. The lock icon, which indicates a secure HTTPS connection, has been replaced with a toggle icon. Clicking on this icon will show the same menu as before, but with rounder corners. The tabs now have curvier corners as well.

2. The options menu, accessed through the three-dot button on the top-right corner, has been revamped. Each menu item now has an icon next to it, making it easier to navigate and select options. Additionally, a new icon has been added next to the three-dot button, allowing quick access to the currently active Chrome flags.

3. Chrome Refresh 2023 follows Google’s Material You philosophy, which aims to create a more personalized and visually appealing experience. However, unlike on Android, Chrome does not pick up colors from your desktop wallpaper. Instead, it matches the colors to the background you use within the Chrome browser. Tabs, bookmark menus, new tab shortcuts, and the new toggle button also use colors from the same color family. It’s important to note that this Material You-based coloring is currently only available on Chrome Canary and not on the stable version of Chrome.

By following these steps, you can enjoy the refreshed design of Google Chrome with its updated address bar, revamped options menu, and Material You-inspired color scheme.
