Hyundai Exter Top-spec AMT vs Hyundai i20 Sportz Turbo-Petrol DCT – Which One To Pick?

While the Exter gets the SUV look and more features, the i20 is bigger and more powerful

Hyundai Exter Vs i20

The recently launched Hyundai Exter is the carmaker’s smallest SUV on sale. It’s based on the Grand i10 Nios hatchback, but sports a rugged SUV-ish styling. It can be considered as an upgrade over the Nios, but with a price range of Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, it overlaps several variants of the i20 premium hatchback as well. It turns out, the top-spec petrol-automatic variant of the Exter is priced quite similarly to the mid-spec i20 Turbo-DCT from a segment above. For that budget, let’s see which one is the right choice for you:

The i20 Sportz DCT is costlier than the fully loaded Exter by just Rs 16,000. If you’re not specifically looking for an automatic option, you can also look at the i20 Asta (O) in its manual guise for Rs 8,000 less.

If it is the performance you want, the i20 is better than the Exter by 37PS and 58Nm, which are significant figures. Furthermore, the Exter gets a 5-speed AMT, while the i20 goes with a more responsive dual-clutch automatic. Interestingly, even with the added performance, the i20 is about 1 kmpl more efficient.

Hyundai Exter

Those who want more mileage can even look at the Exter CNG, though it’s only offered with a manual transmission. The alternative fuel option is not offered with the i20.

The Exter is expectedly smaller than the i20 in terms of length and width. The differences are significant, which can translate to more cabin space. The Exter, due to its SUV proposition, is taller. The i20’s wheelbase is also longer by 130mm. In all terms, the i20 is a bigger and more accommodating car. But if you prefer a more upright seating position, either as driver or passenger, and more headroom in the back, you might still consider the Exter.

Explore The Hyundai Exter S Variant in These 7 Detailed Images

The S trim offers additional features compared to the base-spec EX variant

Hyundai Exter

After the launch of the Hyundai Exter, the car has started to arrive at dealerships across the country. The micro-SUV is available in five variants, and we now have detailed images of the S manual variant of the Exter. If you are considering booking the Exter S, you can take a look at this variant in the gallery below.

Exterior

Hyundai Exter Front

The S variant comes with H-shaped DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) and halogen headlamps. The long gloss black grille, bumper, and big skid plate are the same as the top-spec variant. The only difference is the absence of projector headlamps in the front.

Hyundai Exter Side

On the side profile, you’ll find 14-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, which is a size smaller than the SX variant. The turn indicators are mounted on the fenders, but if you choose the AMT variant, they will be mounted on the ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirrors). The C-pillar also has a gloss black finish on this model.

Hyundai Exter Rear

From the rear, the Exter S looks identical to the base-spec EX variant with the H-shaped element in the LED tail lamps, a large rear bumper with a skid plate, and a black strip connecting the tail lamps. This variant does not come with a shark fin antenna and a rear spoiler like the SX trim.

Interior

The cabin design of the Exter S is the same as the top-spec variants, featuring an all-black cabin and a diamond pattern on the dashboard. The upholstery lacks leather and it misses out on chrome-colored inside door handles as well as map lights.

Features & Safety

Hyundai Exter Touchscreen Display and Digital Driver's Display

The Exter S comes with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display that supports wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also includes a digital driver display, rear AC vents, rear power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs, and a rear 12V socket. These features are in addition to what the EX variant offers.

In terms of safety, the Exter S is equipped with 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, central locking, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and manual day/night inside rear-view mirror (IRVM). The AMT variant also comes with electronic stability control (ESC), hill hold assist, and vehicle stability management (VSM) as standard, but these features require an additional cost of Rs 24,000 for manual variants.

Powertrain

Hyundai Exter Manual Transmission

The Exter is powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that delivers 83PS of power and 114Nm of torque. You can choose between a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT transmission. There is also an option for a CNG powertrain with the same engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. The Exter S variant is available with all three powertrain options.

Price & Rivals

Hyundai has priced the Exter between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 10.10 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom). It competes directly with the Tata Punch and Maruti Ignis, but it can also be considered as a rival to the Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, and Citroen C3.

We find out how the Hyundai Exter fares against its rivals on paper

[![Hyundai Exter](https://stimg.cardekho.com/images/cms/carnewsimages/editorimages/64b7c98555e9e.jpg)](https://www.cardekho.com/hyundai/exter)

Hyundai Exter is now on sale in India and is being offered in five broad variants – EX, S, SX, SX (O), and SX (O) Connect – along with both petrol and CNG powertrain options. Considering the size and price of the micro SUV, we have compared its specifications with its direct rival, the Tata Punch, as well as other close rivals in the small SUV and crossover space. Let’s see how each of them fared on paper:

### Dimensions

| Dimensions | Hyundai Exter | Tata Punch | Citroen C3 | Maruti Ignis | Renault Kiger | Nissan Magnite |
|————|————-|————|————|————–|—————|—————-|
| Length | 3,815mm | 3,827mm | 3,981mm | 3,700mm | 3,991mm | 3,994mm |

![Hyundai Exter](https://stimg.cardekho.com/pwa/img/spacer3x2.png)

– Hyundai Exter stands out as the tallest among all the models mentioned in the table. However, in terms of length, it is shorter and narrower than all except the Maruti Ignis.
– Exter’s direct rival, the Tata Punch, is longer than the Hyundai’s micro SUV, but falls short in terms of wheelbase and boot space figures.
– Understandably, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite subcompact SUVs are longer and wider than the rest of the cars here but it’s the Citroen C3 that claims the longest wheelbase.
– The Kiger’s boot offers the highest luggage loading capacity, followed by the Hyundai Exter, which has the second-highest boot space among all the models in this comparison.

### Powertrain

| Specs | Hyundai Exter | Tata Punch | Citroen C3 | Maruti Ignis | Renault Kiger/ Nissan Magnite |
|——-|————-|————|————|————–|——————————-|
| Engine | 1.2-litre Petrol | 1.2-litre Petrol +CNG | 1.2-litre Petrol | 1.2-litre Petrol | 1.2-litreTurbo Petrol |

![Tata Punch Engine](https://stimg.cardekho.com/pwa/img/spacer3x2.png)

– All these models except the Renault-Nissan twins offer a 1.2-litre petrol engine. However, the Hyundai Exter is the only model here to also offer a CNG option (at this time).
– The output figures and transmission options for the Maruti Ignis and Hyundai Exter petrol are almost identical. They are also the only models here to offer a four-cylinder engine which offers more refinement than the three-cylinder units of the others.
– If you want performance, it’s the C3’s turbo-petrol engine with the most power and torque and the only one to offer a 6-speed transmission.
– Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite on the other hand come with smaller 1-litre naturally aspirated petrol (72PS and 96Nm) and 1-litre turbo petrol (100PS and up to 160Nm) engines. The turbo variants of these subcompact SUVs also come with the option of a CVT automatic transmission, unlike other models which only have the option of an AMT gearbox.
– The Tata Punch is due to get a CNG option later in the year, differentiated from the Exter CNG with its twin-cylinder setup for a bigger boot.

![Hyundai Exter Interior](https://stimg.cardekho.com/pwa/img/spacer3x2.png)

– It is the Hyundai Exter that offers a more comprehensive list of features, with many, like a sunroof, dual-cameras dash cam, and six airbags as standard, being segment firsts.
– Tata Punch is also a well-packaged offering and comes with features such as rain-sensing wipers, traction modes, and 16-inch alloy wheels over the Hyundai micro SUV.
– Nissan Magnite is the only offering in the segment which comes with a 360-degree camera while the Citroen hatchback gets the biggest touchscreen unit here.
– Renault Kiger comes with up to four airbags, while Tata Punch, Maruti Ignis, and Citroen C3 only get the mandated dual front airbags. Even so, the Punch is the only model here with a five-star safety rating from the Global NCAP crash tests.
– Even though the Maruti Ignis is the most dated offering here, it still covers all the basic requirements. At the same time, the C3 has even fewer creature comforts to offer, despite the additional tech over the Maruti model.

### Prices

Hyundai Exter Gets These 7 Features Over The Tata Punch

The Hyundai Exter packs an extensive equipment list, which includes a few segment-first features as well

Hyundai Exter vs Tata Punch

The Hyundai Exter has entered the micro SUV segment, challenging the monopoly of the Tata Punch since its launch in late 2021. Along with the option of a CNG powertrain, the Exter offers a range of features that can attract buyers from other segments. Let’s take a look at the top 7 features that the Hyundai Exter offers over the Tata Punch:

A Sunroof

Hyundai Exter sunroof

The Hyundai Exter comes with a sunroof, a highly desired feature among Indian buyers. This feature is available on the SX, SX (O), and SX (O) Connect variants of the SUV.

Digitised Driver’s Display

Hyundai Exter digitised driver display

While the Tata Punch offers a semi-digital driver display with a 7-inch screen, the Hyundai Exter provides a fully digitised instrument cluster similar to the Venue. Though the Punch has a larger coloured TFT screen (7 inches compared to 4.2 inches), the Exter’s digitised display is more functional as it also supports multi-regional languages. Additionally, the semi-digital cluster is only available on the top-spec Creative variant of the Punch, while Hyundai offers the digitised driver display as standard.

Dual Dashcam Setup

The Exter is equipped with a segment-first dual dashcam setup, similar to recent Hyundai cars. This feature is available only on the range-topping SX (O) Connect variant and includes front and rear cameras, a 2.3-inch display, smartphone app connectivity, and multi-recording modes. The dual cameras have different recording options such as Driving (normal), Event (safety), and Vacation (time lapse), and can shoot videos in full HD resolution.

Wireless Phone Charging

Hyundai Exter wireless phone charging

The Exter shares many features with the Grand i10 Nios, including wireless phone charging, which is a segment-first offering for the micro SUV. This feature is available in the higher-spec SX (O) and SX (O) Connect variants.

Paddle Shifters

Hyundai Exter paddle shifters

The Exter surprises with another segment-first feature – paddle shifters with its AMT gearbox, borrowed from the Venue’s DCT automatic. This feature is available in the SX, SX (O), and SX (O) Connect AMT variants of the micro SUV, and it marks the first time the Exter offers paddle shifters with only the AMT gearbox.

A Bigger Touchscreen

While the Tata Punch comes with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system in its higher-spec Accomplished and Creative variants, the Hyundai Exter features a larger 8-inch touchscreen unit, similar to the Grand i10 Nios. This touchscreen is available across the Exter’s lineup, except for the base-spec EX and EX (O) variants. The infotainment unit in the range-topping SX (O) Connect variant also includes BlueLink connected car tech and Alexa connectivity features.

A Beefier Safety Kit

Hyundai Exter six airbags

While the Tata Punch scored a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP with features like dual front airbags, traction control, and brake sway control, the Exter goes further and offers six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), vehicle stability management (VSM), hill-start assist, and 3-point seatbelts for all passengers.

Hyundai Exter Front & Side

The Exter is priced between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 10.10 lakh (introductory ex-showroom pan-India). It competes with the Tata Punch, Maruti Ignis, Renault Kiger, Citroen C3, and Nissan Magnite.

Hyundai Exter vs Tata Punch vs Maruti Ignis: Size, Powertrain And Fuel Efficiency Comparison

Let’s see how the Hyundai Exter sizes up against its main rivals

It competes directly with the Tata Punch and Maruti Ignis, even though the latter is not as SUV-like as the others. So let’s find out how the Exter fares against them in terms of size and powertrains.

The Ignis, on the other hand, is smaller than the Exter and Punch in all aspects, making it the smaller offering. It may seem like it has a tiny boot in comparison, but it is worth noting that the Exter and Punch are stating their capacities till the roof, not just the parcel shelf.

However, the Exter is currently the only model in this segment to offer a CNG powertrain.

The Punch CNG is in the works and can be launched sometime this year, but there is no news of Maruti offering a CNG option with the Ignis. XV Red Edition Turbo – Rs 9.44 lakh

XV Premium Turbo – Rs 9.72 lakh

RXZ Turbo – Rs 10 lakh

XV Premium (O) Turbo – Rs 9.92 lakh

  • The Exter’s starting price is tied with that of its closest rival, the Tata Punch, at Rs 6 lakh, while the Maruti Ignis undercuts them both by around Rs 16,000.
  • The Magnite prices start on par with the Exter, while the Citroen C3 is pricier by Rs 16,000. But the priciest entry point here is for the Renault Kiger.

  • Save for the Renault and Nissan SUVs, all other models here get a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a 5-speed MT.

  • The Renault-Nissan duo comes with a 1-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit with a 5-speed MT. They also offer a 1-litre turbo-petrol unit with the same manual gearbox option.

Citroen C3 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine

  • The Citroen C3 is the only car here to get an optional 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine with a 6-speed MT.

  • Hyundai Exter is the only model here to offer a CNG powertrain (until the Punch CNG arrives).

  • The top-spec Exter is pricier than the top-spec Punch by Rs 50,000 but also offers more features like a sunroof and dual-camera dashcam.

Nissan Magnite

  • The Nissan Magnite’s entry-level turbo variant is more affordable than the top-spec Exter, while offering more space thanks to its bigger size, same as the Kiger. But if its performance you’re prioritising, you can consider the top-spec C3 turbo-petrol option instead.

  • All models in this comparison can be had with an optional dual-tone paint option, majorly limited to their higher-spec variants. The Tata Punch also comes with a Camo edition with multiple variants for a distinctive exterior finish, at a small premium.

Maruti Ignis

  • The Exter’s entry-level automatic variant is pricier than that of the Punch, while the Maruti Ignis’s entry-level automatic undercuts it by almost a lakh rupees. The Nissan Magnite has the most expensive entry-level automatic option here at Rs 10 lakh.
  • Although the Exter and Punch’s AMT variants are priced closely to one another, it’s the latter’s variants that are relatively more affordable.

  • The Exter, Punch and Ignis all offer a 5-speed AMT, as does the Renault Kiger with its 1-litre petrol engine. Citroen does not offer an automatic transmission with the C3, neither does Nissan with the Magnite’s 1-litre engine. The turbo-petrol engines of the Renault-Nissan SUVs come with the choice of a CVT auto.

  • The Hyundai Exter’s top-spec SX (O) Connect AMT is the costliest of the lot (Rs 10 lakh) when the AMT models are considered. It is also the only one to offer features like paddle shifters and the aforementioned sunroof and dashcam.

Renault Kiger

Overall, the better-equipped Exter is pricier than the Punch, while the aged Ignis is the most affordable in every comparison. The Citroen C3 is not as well-equipped as those three but still offers the benefit of a larger cabin and a punchy turbo-petrol engine. Meanwhile, the Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite subcompact SUVs are overall more expensive for their bigger proportions and more features at the top end.
