Quotes after the Team Presentation in Berlin.

Marc Bongers, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director: “First of all, I would like to thank everyone involved in the organisation. It was an absolutely cool event here at BMW Motorrad Welt. It was very nice to show the team managers and riders what we do here in Berlin. We haven’t done this in this form before. The atmosphere among all involved was fantastic, and that is also extremely important for performance because we have this one team mentality. The presentation itself in BMW Motorrad Welt was also very successful. I am confident for the new season. We still need a few tests; last year, we didn’t necessarily have the best conditions but we have prepared a lot of things. Now there is not much time left until Phillip Island. Although the first two events take place on tracks that haven’t necessarily been our strong suit in the past, I am still optimistic that we will have a good start, carry this positive energy into the first races and through the entire season.”

Shaun Muir (Team Principal ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team): “First of all it is an outstanding venue for such a presentation. It think it really captures the spirit of what BMW Motorrad are trying to achieve here so I am super proud to be part of that. The tour around the plant was sensational. A big round of applause to all the guys, everyone in the factory; they really welcomed us. Moving on to the championship as such, I think it is absolutely clear that the combination of Michael and Toprak brings some special qualities. I think that is something we are really looking forward to working with. Already we can see what Toprak requires in terms of a package and a bike. It is a little bit different, not an awful lot, we just need to steer in a slightly different direction to give Toprak what he needs. And I say that in terms of letting him amplify his strengths which is hard on the brakes, corner entry, balance on the bike, something we know the BMW M 1000 RR can work well with. We want to put ourselves in a strong position, we want to compete for the podium in Australia. Can we get a podium? It’s a tough question, but Toprak’s personal aims are that he thinks he can and we give him all the support to do that. Michael has missed large parts of the past two seasons, and he does not underestimate what he is up against but he is definitely up for that challenge. I feel that Toprak can bring a lot of strengths out of Michael. I am looking forward to seeing that because we saw how good Michael can be when things go well. The bike is getting better, there is a development team behind us. From where the project started in 2019 to where we are now is night and day. I hope we can take advantage of that and get our rewards.”

Michael Galinski (Team Manager Bonovo motion BMW Racing Team): “The team presentation was truly impressive. Many people attended, and it was very interesting at the BMW Motorrad plant and in the BMW Motorrad Welt. It was my first time at the plant itself, and it was fascinating to see the engine department and how all the motorcycles are assembled. It was great to take a behind-the-scenes look and also to present ourselves here as a team. We are very happy with our rider duo. They are two real top riders. Scott is the Vice World Champion, Garrett had a very strong second half of the season last year. Our goal is to move further forward, and with the BMW Motorrad family, this is certainly possible this season. So much manpower has been added that we are really happy now. Of course, we still need a bit of time, but we are confident that we will move forward this year.”

Garrett Gerloff (#31 BMW M 1000 RR, Bonovo motion BMW Racing Team): “It has been exciting. There has been a really cool energy here at Berlin. It’s great to be in Berlin, it’s really nice to see all the amazing people that work here in the plant, that develop and produce the BMW M 1000 RR that we race. So it’s really cool to have the team presentation here. It has been really nice to see Scott, Toprak and Michael and to get together after a couple of months of holidays and seeing family and friends. I can tell that we are all excited to get back on the track and to start testing again. In just over a month we are going to be racing in Australia. Everything is going to happen really fast from here on but I’ve been doing my part to make sure that I am ready for the season and I am excited to get started. I think we have a really good base now. I have one year behind me with BMW Motorrad Motorsport and the Bonovo action BMW Racing Team, so a lot of information and I think we can come up with solutions faster than last year if we do have a problem. It is going to be good to go the every track with a higher potential, and I think it can be a really good season. My goal is to work on qualifying and to be a bit better there and that can help me in the beginning of the races and then at the end of the races, when I am strong, I think we can make some real progress and be up front.”

Toprak Razgatlioglu (#54 BMW M 1000 RR, ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team): “I am very happy to join the BMW Motorrad family. When I arrived at Berlin on Monday and left the airport I was really surprised because everyone spoke Turkish. Also at the plant, there a so many Turkish employees. I am very happy for this. In general, I am very positive. Especially today, there were a lot of people and I understand that a lot of people like me. A lot of people came here to see me, also many Turkish guys, and a lot of them came from very far away. Everyone can’t wait for the season, and that also goes for me. My focus is now on the season. I realized that the people believe in me, but it is important that you believe in your bike. Many people say that the BMW is not ready to fight for the championship but I believe that my bike is ready to fight for wins and the championship. We just need my setup, because my riding style is complete different. When we have this, we can easily fight for the win. Now I am just focusing on the test next week. It is really important for me. I need to adapt to the bike and I believe that we can fight for the podium and the wins this season. I am excited. I signed with BMW but I am also a part of the family. This is something I saw today again and it is great. I will give more than 100 percent, I will try to win with BMW. Everyone is working hard and this is a great extra motivation also for me. If we keep doing this, we will win the World Championship.”

Scott Redding (#45 BMW M 1000 RR, Bonovo motion BMW Racing Team): “It’s good to come here to Berlin. To come into the plant and to see how everything is made is always interesting, seeing the people in action at their work is always good. It’s also very interesting to see where the engines are built and how they do it, so it’s really nice to be here and to witness how everything is made. A launch is also always great, to unveil the colours of the bikes and the suites, together with the team-mates and the teams. Speaking about the coming season, for me it would be nice to have our bike to be more consistently competitive which I think we can do. We’ve had some good changes made and obviously Toprak is coming over. We also have a test team which makes a big difference. I think we are going in the right direction, which is important. It would be nice to stand on the podium again this year and more frequently, and to try to make our bad weekends not so bad and have a good, consistent year.”

Michael van der Mark (#60 BMW M 1000 RR, ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team): “It’s nice to start the season, it’s great to be here in Berlin. We all know that BMW is a big company but we got a nice tour through the plant and I must say that it is really impressive. It was also great to see where they prepare the race engines and I am really ready to start the season. I can’t wait to go testing again, I feel one hundred percent fit, I got a new teammate that seems to be really fast – so I am looking forward to it. Like I said, I am fit again, the bike is getting better and better, Toprak is pushing the project even more and I think we want to win races and be on the podium as soon as possible.”

Do Honda CT110 And CT90 Trail Bikes Make The Best Adventure Bikes?

Say the phrases “postie bike” to an Australian, and you may conjure an immediate wave of very particular nostalgia. You see, whereas the Honda CT90, CT110, and comparable path bikes discovered their area of interest in different markets, the Australian Post adopted them as official work autos again in 1971.

Prior to signing up with Honda as their official postal automobile provider, Australian postal supply employees used quite a lot of strolling and common bicycles, additionally known as ‘pushbikes.’ As you’ll be able to think about, adopting a fleet of motorized postie bikes made their jobs so much simpler (although some postal employees may additionally have loved getting paid to train).

They won’t be the quickest straight out of the field, however that is not what you need in the event you’re making frequent stops and traversing uneven, unsure terrain, anyway. You need stable, reliable autos that may carry a good quantity of publish of their saddlebags and high containers. Bikes like Honda CT110s and CT90s, which gained reputations as stable farm bikes everywhere in the globe for very comparable causes.

Then, Postie Bikes Were Retired

Thus, postie bikes grew to become a typical sight throughout Australia for the next many years. Then issues began to alter in 2017, when the nationwide Australian authorities issued a brand new, legally binding Vehicle Standard for bike and moped braking methods.

Under the phrases of the brand new regulation, all new fashions that hadn’t beforehand been bought in Australia from 2017 on would require two-channel ABS (entrance and rear) fitted as commonplace tools. By November 2021, the statute broadened to incorporate any new bikes bought within the nation, together with new variations of current fashions. That, after all, included showroom-fresh variations of the basic Honda postie bikes.

By the time that regulation prolonged to current fashions in 2021, the Australian Government had already chosen a new plan for postie bike evolution. In 2019, it introduced a plan to undertake three-wheeled electrical supply trikes as an alternative.

As is commonly the case when a serious change is made, not all Australian residents were on board with the plan. Still, the truth that the brand new trikes may carry fairly a bit extra publish at a time (particularly packages, which have solely develop into extra common with the rise of on-line buying) was a critical level in favo(u)r of the EV trikes. Some alleviation of rising environmental issues was additionally seen as a profit.

Postie Bikes Weren’t Totally Outlawed; They Just Couldn’t Be Sold New

Your native used bike market will differ drastically relying on the place you reside on this planet, for a number of causes. A fast go searching at on-line used bike marketplaces like Gumtree and Bikesales in Queensland, Australia reveals a variety of outdated postie bikes on the market. They all have varied mileage, and a few are newer than others. Prices may vary from $1,500 Australian as much as over $3K AUD (or about $990 US to someplace north of $1,990).

It won’t precisely be pocket change, but it surely’s fairly shut for a functioning, nearly unkillable bike.

So, Do Honda CT110s And CT90s Make The Best Adventure Bikes?

In this video, three guys from the overlanding and tenting Australian YouTube channel True North Adventures get a trio of outdated postie bikes and begin flogging them on a few of their favourite terrain in Cape York, Queensland, Australia.

Two of the blokes have ridden earlier than, whereas one man hasn’t. In truth, he simply acquired his motorcycle license a couple of days forward of taking pictures this video, as he mentions towards the start. You can see that two of the blokes have correct motocross boots, whereas the opposite man is simply sporting a pair of on a regular basis work boots.

None of that basically issues, although, as a result of all three look to be having an absolute blast. They’re exploring terrain they already know nicely from their earlier four-wheeled adventures, however in a brand new approach. They’ve divided up the objects they wish to carry among the many three bikes, and so they’re simply off having a great time collectively on their bikes.

At the top of the day, is not that what journey driving is all about? Getting out, having enjoyable with your mates, and most significantly, not being wired?

I imply, there is a stable argument to make for a easy, trustworthy, uncomplicated bike that is simple to repair (or to be taught to repair) with a couple of primary instruments. It’s the polar reverse of fancy and complex, however that is all a part of its allure. You will not be doing the Erzbergrodeo on one among these bikes, however laborious enduro is a little more hardcore than path driving together with your buddies, anyway.

Advantages to planning adventures on path bikes like these (whether or not you name them ‘postie’ or not) embrace:

  • Used ones will normally maintain working in the event you give them primary upkeep, and are easy to work on or be taught on.
  • They’re typically low cost. As with most used bikes, they will be cheaper the extra work you need to do, so simply watch out to not chunk off greater than you’ll be able to chew, wrench-wise.
  • Because they’re low cost, the price of entry is so much decrease than it’s for an enormous, correct ‘journey bike.’
  • Because they’re low cost, you AND your mates can have a neater time all getting your personal so you’ll be able to go do foolish issues collectively.
  • They’re lighter, much less highly effective, and simpler to deal with than greater bikes, in order that they’re excellent for anybody studying tips on how to be snug doing this sort of driving.
  • They’re decrease to the bottom, so most riders will really feel extra assured and have a neater time holding themselves upright and shifting ahead.
  • They’re inexpensive to repair than greater bikes, and components (each new, used, and new-old inventory) are plentiful.

What do you suppose? Have you bought any grand path bike journey plans brewing with your mates for 2024? Let us know within the feedback!

H2X Darling: A Hydrogen Van with Lightweight Chassis by KTM

KTM, the well-known track car and motorcycle manufacturer, has teamed up with Australian company H2X Global to create a hydrogen fuel cell van. This collaboration allows H2X to benefit from KTM’s expertise in lightweighting technology.

KTM, famous for its X-Bow track car and the GT-XR supercar, joined forces with H2X last year to develop a “revolutionary” lightweight platform called the ‘Smart chassis’. Their goal is to reduce the cost of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, including cars, trucks, and buses.

Under this partnership, the two companies announced their plans to collaborate on a new ‘origami’ chassis specifically designed for H2X’s light commercial vehicles. This chassis is said to be easier to produce, maintain, and provide greater flexibility for different models compared to a traditional chassis.

KTM states that this new platform will not only enhance the sustainability of their manufacturing processes but also reduce the costs associated with tooling, which is typically a significant expense in sheet metal forming processes.

The first product resulting from this collaboration is a hydrogen-powered version of H2X’s Darling, a mid-sized van comparable to the Ford Transit and Vauxhall Movano. The Darling comes in various sizes, ranging from 4670mm to 5324mm in length.

Although still in the early stages of development, H2X has revealed a prototype of the Hydrogen Professional Van and is currently in discussions with a key supplier to verify its viability. The van claims to have a payload capacity of 3500kg, a towing capacity of up to 2550kg, and a range of up to 248 miles.

While technical details about the hydrogen-powered Darling remain undisclosed, KTM Technologies’ technical project manager, Andy Schumacher, expressed excitement about collaborating with H2X Global. He acknowledged H2X’s innovative vision and dedication to pioneering hydrogen-powered solutions for the automotive industry. Schumacher emphasized KTM’s commitment to environmentally friendly and groundbreaking vehicles.

Hydrogen fuel cells are particularly appealing to light commercial vehicle manufacturers due to their long range and quick refueling times, which benefit commercial operators. Stellantis already offers a range of mid-sized fuel cell vans in Europe, and various start-ups, including First Hydrogen from the UK and Canada, have plans to commercialize their own versions of hydrogen-powered vehicles.

This announcement from KTM and H2X comes shortly after Toyota revealed its priority shift towards the development of fuel cell technology for commercial vehicles. Toyota has experienced limited success with its Mirai FCEV passenger car.

He inherited second place when Jarno Trulli spun out. The leader, David Coulthard of McLaren, went off track ahead of the second restart, allowing Montoya to regain the lead momentarily. However, Schumacher quickly overtook Montoya with an impressive move around the outside of Turn 2. From there, he pulled away from the field, winning the race with a comfortable 18.6-second margin over Montoya.

This victory marked the first of 11 wins for Schumacher on his way to securing his fifth Formula 1 World Championship in 2002.

Reflecting on the race, Schumacher said, “I did not think we could win here. But things change quickly, and from the next race, I expect it to be much closer.”

Ferrari team principal Jean Todt reminisces about this glorious era of F1 dominance and his fondness for working with Schumacher in this video:

Schumacher continued to drive this car to a third-place finish in Malaysia, despite a collision with Montoya that damaged the front wing. Starting from pole position, he made a pitstop at the end of the first lap and embarked on an impressive comeback drive from 21st place back to a podium position. Towards the end of the race, he overtook Jenson Button of BAR-Honda to secure third place.

Reflecting on the incident with Montoya, Schumacher remarked, “As far as the accident was concerned, maybe Juan could have given me more room, but he chose not to, and we just touched. That’s racing. It was only a little touch, but I had to pit to change the front wing.

“I decided to push right to the end, and if I had not, probably I would not have caught Button, who obviously had a problem. We have brought the old car to the first two races and did not really expect to have so many points in our account.”

The F2001b is equipped with a 3.0-liter Tipo 050 V10 engine designed by Gilles Simon. It can produce almost 900 horsepower at 18,500rpm and features an electro-hydraulic, seven-speed sequential gearbox. The car weighs just 1,323 pounds.
