Minjee Lee Wins BMW Ladies Championship in Playoff Against Alison Lee

The 2023 BMW Ladies Championship witnessed an intense playoff between Minjee Lee and Alison Lee, with Minjee emerging as the champion. The tournament took place at the Seowon Valley Country Club and attracted a crowd of 60,000 spectators. Notably, this event is the only LPGA tournament held in Korea and featured a world-class field of players. Additionally, the tournament boasted a fleet of fully electric BMW Courtesy Cars for the players.

Australian golfer Minjee Lee secured her victory with impressive rounds of 64, 69, 71, and 68, finishing with a total score of 272 strokes, 16 under par. The 27-year-old clinched her second LPGA title of the season by sinking a birdie on the first extra hole, defeating American golfer Alison Lee. Lydia Ko, the defending champion, finished third, only two strokes behind.

Sangyun Han, Director and President of BMW Group Korea, congratulated Minjee Lee on her victory and commended her outstanding performance in a field of strong competitors. Han expressed appreciation for the successful event and thanked all the tournament partners, supporters, volunteers, and fans for their contributions.

Minjee Lee laid the groundwork for her tenth LPGA Tour victory with an exceptional opening round of 64 (-8). Throughout the tournament, her only formidable competitor was Alison Lee, who started slightly better with a 63 on Thursday. However, Minjee Lee’s composure and skill prevailed during the playoff, showcasing her two-time major winner status. Notably, Minjee Lee also triumphed in the Kroger Queen City Championship last month against Charley Hull from England.

Reflecting on her win, Minjee Lee shared her excitement about being in contention and expressed her enjoyment of playing under challenging conditions. She highlighted the fun she had during the tournament and her desire to consistently perform at a high level.

A remarkable highlight of the tournament occurred during the final round when Linn Grant made an exceptional shot on the 17th hole. After initially hitting her first shot into the water on the short Par 4, Grant impressively holed out her third shot from the tee using a 3-wood. Grant expressed her delight at playing in the BMW Ladies Championship and finishing the tournament with a strong round.

The tournament did not witness any official hole-in-ones, including on the two designated holes, the 14th and 16th, which offered full-electric Hole-in-One Awards in the form of a BMW i5 and a BMW i7, respectively. However, participants still enjoyed the premium mobility provided by the fully electric BMW i7 shuttle service, with over 100 BMW vehicles used to transport players, officials, and fans to and from the golf course.

UK fuel prices: Petrol and diesel costs rise “unjustifiably”

A recent report has revealed that the increase in UK fuel prices is said to be unjustified. The investigation conducted by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) determined that Asda and Morrisons, the two cheapest fuel sellers, initiated the rise by targeting higher profit margins. As a result, Asda’s fuel margin target for 2023 was over three times what it was in 2019, while Morrisons doubled its margin target in the same period.

Other retailers such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco did not respond in a competitive manner. Instead, they raised their prices in line with the changes made by Asda and Morrisons. This lack of competition has weakened the market, leading the CMA to emphasize the need for action.

The report also highlighted the slow decrease in diesel prices, largely due to Asda gradually reducing its prices as wholesale prices fell. Additionally, other companies failed to respond competitively to this price decline. The CMA estimated that drivers paid 13ppl (pence per liter) more for diesel from January 2023 to the end of May 2023 compared to the historic average margins.

To address these issues, the CMA has suggested implementing a “fuel finder scheme” that would provide drivers with real-time fuel prices through their phones or satellite navigation systems. This scheme aims to revive competition in the retail road fuel market. The CMA also recommended the establishment of a monitoring body to hold the industry accountable.

The RAC spokesperson, Simon Williams, highlighted that the increase in retailer margins has resulted in drivers paying nearly £1 billion more for fuel, which is concerning given the current cost of living crisis. This confirms ongoing concerns about supermarkets treating drivers unfairly at the pumps.

Takeaways

Hyundai Creta

  • The Hyundai Creta remains the most popular choice in this segment, with more than 13,800 units sold. However, its year-on-year (YoY) market share went down by the biggest margin, of over 18 percent thanks to new competitors since.

  • With close to 12,000 units shipped, the Maruti Grand Vitara leapfrogged from the fourth spot in July to second place in August, witnessing the highest MoM growth of over 30 percent.

Kia Seltos

  • Over 10,500 units of the new Kia Seltos were retailed in August, making it the final model on this list whose sales crossed the 10,000-unit mark. The Kia SUV’s market share stood at over 18 percent, 10 percent less than the year before.

  • Following the Kia Seltos closely was the Mahindra Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic duo, still listed as one in the sales charts, with nearly 9,900 units sold. Their MoM figures diminished by around 6 percent while both the models cumulatively had a market share close to 17 percent.

Toyota Hyryder

  • The Toyota Hyryder, the Maruti Grand Vitara’s cousin, had a decent outing in August sales as the carmaker shipped 4,000-odd units of the SUV. Its MoM figures saw an uptick of almost 22 percent.

  • Honda dispatched slightly more than 2,800 units of the Elevate SUV in August. While its launch only took place in September (with deliveries starting only after), expect those numbers to rise in the coming months.

  • The Skoda KushaqVolkswagen Taigun duo failed to go past the 2,500-unit mark individually. Both the models had a market share of under 5 percent each.

Fuel profit margins have more than doubled since the war in Ukraine began

A recent report has revealed that fuel profit margins have significantly increased since the war in Ukraine began. Asda and Morrisons, the two cheapest fuel sellers, were found to be the main instigators of this rise. However, Asda was also fined £60,000 for not fully co-operating with the investigation conducted by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

In 2023, Asda aimed for a fuel margin target that was over three times higher than the target set in 2019. Similarly, Morrisons doubled its margin target during the same period.

It was also highlighted in the report that other retailers, such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco, did not respond competitively to the changing market conditions. Instead of lowering their prices, these retailers raised them. The CMA expressed concern about this lack of competition and emphasized the need for action.

Moreover, diesel prices have been slow to decrease due to Asda gradually reducing their prices in response to falling wholesale prices. This, combined with other firms’ failure to respond competitively, resulted in drivers paying an additional 13p per litre for diesel between January 2023 and the end of May 2023.

“Competition at the pump is not functioning as effectively as it should, and immediate changes are required to address this issue,” said Cardell, spokesperson for the CMA.
