Lexus Will Reportedly Borrow The GR Corolla’s Engine, But Not For A Sports Car

The Lexus LBX is a small crossover that aims to offer a luxurious alternative to the Toyota Yaris Cross. The Toyota Yaris Cross is essentially a raised version of the Yaris supermini, available as a Gazoo Racing model with a turbocharged 1.6-liter gasoline engine. This same engine is used in the GR Corolla, where it produces more power. According to a new report, Lexus might use the high-performance “G16E” engine for the LBX.

As reported by Japan’s Mag-X, the LBX would be the first non-Toyota model to be equipped with this small yet powerful engine, capable of producing up to 295 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) in the GR Corolla Morizo Edition. In the GR Yaris, the engine’s output varies by region, but even the lowest figures are a healthy 257 hp and 266 lb-ft (360 Nm). Similar to the two hot hatches, a GR-powered LBX would feature all-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission.

The BMW i7 M70 is the largest of the three electric sedans, with the Mercedes AMG EQS 53 not far behind in terms of size. However, there is a noticeable difference in length, with the Audi RS e-Tron GT being a lot smaller than the other two luxury offerings.

In terms of design, the BMW EV has a more rectangular shape with straight lines and flat panels, while the AMG EQS 53 has a more curvy design for better aerodynamics. The RS e-Tron GT, on the other hand, carries a more traditional sports coupe-like design. This also translates to a more spacious rear passenger area in the BMW and Mercedes EVs compared to the Audi alternative listed here.

The Unrivaled History Of Ford Sports Cars

Summary

  • The Ford Capri was a successful European alternative to the Mustang, selling over 1.9 million units during its production run.
  • The Ford RS200, a Group B rally car, was one of the most desirable classic sports cars with only 200 made and high prices reflecting its rarity.
  • Ford’s hot hatches, like the Focus RS, offered practicality, great handling, and power, making them fun vehicles to drive in any weather condition.

Ford is a well-known automotive brand with a long and respected history. They have been in business for over a century and are recognized globally for producing affordable vehicles that cater to the masses. However, their reputation isn’t solely derived from selling a large volume of cars. Ford has also made a name for itself through its impressive racing heritage on foreign soil.

What sets Ford apart from many other manufacturers is their ability to produce a wide range of sports cars that cater to different types of enthusiasts. The best sports cars usually come from manufacturers with a background in producing regular cars, as they are built to the same high standard. Ford has excelled in this area, and while the Ford Mustang is the most well-known, they have also created other exceptional high-performance sports cars.

This article is based on information from Ford, Collecting Cars, and Goodwood.

The Ford Capri Was A British Mustang

Ford Capri
Wikimedia Commons/Ermell

The Ford Capri, produced from 1968 to 1986, was often referred to as the British Mustang. It was created as a European alternative to the successful Mustang, which was not available in the European market. Ford Europe aimed to replicate the Mustang’s success, and the Capri proved to be a hit, selling over 1.9 million units during its production run. Despite not having the same power as the Mustang, the Capri targeted a younger audience and offered a fun sports car experience. It borrowed parts from existing Ford models, such as the Escort, Cortina, and Corsair. The Capri also borrowed its name from the Consul Capri, another Ford model from the 1960s. While it lacked a V-8 engine, it featured inline four and V-6 engines. The Capri’s popularity led to its availability in other markets, including Australia, South Africa, and North America. It even achieved success in rallying and touring car championships, further proving its capabilities.

The Ford RS200 Was A Group B Racer For The Road

White Ford RS200 Evolution
Bring-A-Trailer

The Ford RS200 was a rare and highly desirable sports car that was born out of Ford’s participation in Group B rallying. To meet the racing requirements, Ford had to produce a minimum of 200 road-legal units of the RS200. This mid-engine, four-wheel drive sports car was homologated for road use, giving enthusiasts the chance to experience the performance of a Group B rally car.

The RS200 was built by the Reliant Motor Company, with the chassis designed by a former Formula One designer and engineer. While the road version of the RS200 had four-wheel drive, it had less power compared to its racing counterpart, which produced 350–450 horsepower. The RS200 had a short racing career due to the ban on Group B rallying, but its legacy lives on as one of the most desirable classic Ford sports cars. With only 200 units produced, the RS200 commands high prices in the collector car market.

Ford Focus RS: An All-Purpose Hot Hatch

Blue 2016 Ford Focus RS
Ford

The hot hatchback segment is one of the most intriguing in the automotive industry. While Ford has discontinued the Focus and Fiesta models, their hot hatches were highly regarded for offering a blend of performance and practicality. The Ford Focus RS, first introduced in 1998, gained popularity when the Focus RS WRC car achieved success in rallying, including winning championships under the late Colin McRae. The road-going Focus RS made its debut in 2009 and featured a limited edition RS500 variant. The third generation of the Focus RS was particularly exciting, as it introduced all-wheel drive, making it a practical car with great handling capabilities. It offered seating for four and decent luggage space, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a sports car with versatility and smaller dimensions. With up to 375 horsepower and different driving modes, including a drift mode, the Focus RS delivered an exhilarating driving experience. Although Ford has discontinued the Focus RS for the North American market, it remains a highly sought-after hot hatch among enthusiasts.

Ford GT: Le Mans Racer Turned Icon

Black 1966 Superformance Ford GT40 Replica

The Ford GT is an American icon and a representation of the best of American automotive engineering. From the legendary Le Mans-winning GT40 to the modern versions introduced in 2004 and 2016, Ford has celebrated its heritage and pushed the boundaries of performance. The original GT was the first series production supercar in America, featuring a mid-engine layout, supercharged V-8 engine, and a manual transmission. The latest generation GT deviated from the traditional V-8 engine, opting for a twin-turbo V-6 and the latest racing technology. Despite the change, the current GT retains the design cues of the original GT40, ensuring its recognition as one of the best sports cars ever created.

Ford Had Some Of The Most Successful Race Cars

Ford’s legacy extends beyond its road cars to include some of the most successful race cars in history. From rallying to Formula One, Ford has competed in various motorsport disciplines, which have greatly influenced their road cars. Ford’s dominance in touring car championships with the Ford Sierra RS500 showcased the brand’s ability to produce competitive midsize/large family sedans. The Ford Mondeo continued this success in the super tourer class, winning championships with the help of Prodrive. In Australia’s supercar championship, the Ford Falcon V8 stood as a formidable competitor to the Holden Commodore, winning eight out of 21 championships.

Rally racing is another motorsport discipline where Ford has excelled since the 1960s. Their rally cars, such as the Ford Escort RS1800 and the current Focus and Puma WRC models, have achieved numerous victories, accumulating over 76 wins. However, Ford’s racing legacy is perhaps most renowned for its iconic victories at Le Mans with the GT40. Ford’s bold move to conquer Le Mans paid off immensely and solidified their status as a global force in the automotive world. The second-generation Ford GT continued this success, once again winning the prestigious endurance race.

Ford’s reputation in the automotive and racing scenes is well-deserved. Many older Ford models have become highly desirable classic cars, sought after by collectors worldwide. The brand’s commitment to incorporating race car technologies into their road cars has resulted in exceptional sports cars loved by enthusiasts everywhere.

  • Toyota doesn’t offer the convenience of an automatic on its mid-spec G variant. The top-end variant is around Rs 40,000 more affordable than the mid-spec Alpha variant of the XL6. Their features list is identical, the main additions being a 9-inch touchscreen system and a 360-degree camera.

The Rumion can be seen as a more affordable alternative to the XL6 with one additional seat, but compromises on the premium features. In the case of the Carens, it’s a bigger car, more advanced in terms of technology on offer, and available with a choice of three powertrains.

Android’s Guided Access Alternative: What It Is And How To Enable It

Android’s alternative to Guided Access is called Screen Pinning or App Pinning. Like Guided Access, it allows you to lock the device’s screen to a specific app, keeping your information private and allowing uninterrupted media playback.

To enable this feature, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Security (or Security & Location) menu in your device’s main settings and activate App Pinning. In older versions of Android, this feature may be called Pin Windows and can be found in the Other Security Settings menu, under Biometrics and Security.
  2. Open your list of recently accessed apps and scroll to the app you want to pin open.
  3. Instead of directly opening the app by clicking on its icon, select the icon displayed above it.
  4. This will open a menu with options to lock the selected app, use it with split screen view, and access other advanced features.
  5. Select “Pin This App” or the Pin icon button.
  6. To unpin the app, enter your administrator’s PIN (if your device has one), or hold the Back and Recents buttons simultaneously if you’re using the classic three-button scheme.

This feature can be handy if you want to stay focused on a specific app, like a note-taking app, while working.

The Top 5 Wireless Earbuds for Running in 2023

If you’re looking for a safer alternative to noise-cancelling earbuds, you might want to consider trying bone conduction headphones. Unlike regular in-ear headphones that deliver sound directly to your eardrums, bone conduction headphones transmit audio through vibrations that pass through your jaw bones. This bypasses your eardrums, reducing the risk of hearing impairment, while still allowing you to hear ambient sounds and remain aware of your surroundings.

If you prefer the feel of traditional headphones, the Oladance Open Ear Earbuds are worth considering. These earbuds have a convenient ear hook design that offers a more secure fit compared to regular in-ear earbuds, making them less likely to fall off. The earphones rest comfortably on top of your ears, eliminating the need for wingtips.

Despite the lack of an ear seal, many tech reviewers praise the Oladance Open Ear Earbuds for their ability to produce high-quality sound. The battery life is also impressive, providing up to 16 hours of continuous playback at 50% volume and up to 10 hours at maximum volume, making them ideal for workouts.

The Oladance Open Earbuds are currently priced at $149.99 on Amazon. However, ordering them directly from the official website offers the same price along with fast shipping, a three-month risk-free trial, and a year-long warranty.

Rowan Atkinson Shows Support for Hydrogen Fuel by Driving Toyota GR Yaris H2 at Goodwood

Rowan Atkinson, famously known as Mr. Bean, made an appearance at Goodwood to express his support for alternative fuels. He drove a specially modified Toyota GR Yaris H2, showcasing his enthusiasm for cars and his stance as a strong advocate for the internal combustion engine.

The Toyota GR Yaris H2 Concept, prepared for the Goodwood event, retains its standard turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine. However, the engine management system has been adjusted to allow the car to run on hydrogen. Unlike a fuel cell vehicle, this concept directly injects hydrogen into the engine for internal combustion.

Atkinson, who already owns a regular GR Yaris, found the hydrogen-powered hot hatch to be a “tremendous fun” to drive. He commended Toyota and Formula One for their efforts in preserving the internal combustion engine by utilizing clean alternative fuels. Toyota is currently developing a GR H2 Le Mans prototype that will race on hydrogen fuel in 2026. Formula One plans to transition to hybrid powertrains running sustainable fuels within the same timeframe.

As an early adopter of electric car technology and a graduate in electrical and electronic engineering, Atkinson has become increasingly critical of electric cars. In an article he wrote for the Guardian, he expressed feeling “duped” and encouraged companies to explore alternative fuels like hydrogen to promote the sustainability of the internal combustion engine.

However, Atkinson still appreciates the concept of electric cars; he believes that, despite their heavy and expensive lithium-ion batteries, they are not the all-encompassing solution for the environment that they claim to be. His personal car collection includes notable vehicles such as a McLaren F1, Lancia Delta Integrale HF, and an Acura NSX, in addition to the GR Yaris.

The Toyota GR Yaris emerged as a formidable competitor to the Subaru WRX and Volkswagen GTI upon its release. In its stock form, the GR Yaris boasts a 1.6-liter engine producing 257 horsepower. However, this resilient powerplant can be tuned to reach an astonishing 741 horsepower while preserving its original crankshaft, pistons, and rods.
