Our colleagues with Autosport not too long ago toured AVL Racetech’s facility in Austria, the place the four-cylinder is being dyno-tested. A 13-minute video confirms it sounds each bit like a small, high-output engine ought to – howling its coronary heart out because the exhaust pipes glow cherry crimson from the managed explosions inside the cylinders. This explicit dyno session sees the engine attain a peak output of 405 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, with most torque reaching 375 pound-feet at 4,000 revs. Previously, the engine clocked 410 hp however with simply 368 lb-ft of torque.

As the video states, one would not essentially know this engine was burning hydrogen by sound alone. And it will take a eager eye to identify visible variations within the numerous engine parts. It is, nevertheless, a very completely different engine versus one you’d discover in your common passenger automotive.

“Hydrogen is a very reactive molecule,” mentioned Paul Kapus, supervisor of spark-ignited engines and idea automobiles at AVL Racetech. “It likes to ignite on every surface you can imagine – hot surfaces, hot oil droplets, too-hot spark plugs, hot valves. There is a big risk of preignition.”

AVL Racetech Hydrogen Engine Testing

Senior Development Engineer Nilton Dinaz additional explains the challenges the corporate faces. “Hydrogen is a really peculiar fuel. It needs to moderate the combustion process itself because it burns blazingly fast. That’s why we approach with water injection.”

High strain is a reality of life with hydrogen engines. The consumption manifold and gasoline rails are particularly designed to make use of the gasoline, and lest we overlook, it is a very dry gasoline versus regular pump fuel, which is a liquid. The gasoline injectors require lubrication, and there is even a hydrogen-specific turbocharger concerned. Pressures are very excessive, so the engine’s fundamental building must deal with that strain with out blowing aside.

But the system works properly. The video reveals the mill cranking out energy much like Mercedes-AMG’s heroic turbo-four, all whereas utilizing an plentiful gasoline supply. The subsequent part will see the engine examined on the monitor in racing circumstances. And if all goes properly, there may very well be hydrogen-engined vehicles racing at Le Mans in 2026.

Here’s How Porsche’s Synthetic Fuel Could Be A Gamechanger In The Auto Industry

In 2022, Porsche introduced it was investing $75 million in a Chilean eFuel company. Efuels, or fuels comprised of renewable sources, are available in a couple of totally different kinds and differ from e-kerosene to e-methanol. The latter is already enjoying a key half in lowering carbon emissions within the transport container business. In 2021, Yale Climate Connections reported that the transport business accounted for roughly three % of the world’s carbon emissions — surpassing the main emissions perpetrator: airline journey. But, what Porsche goals to drag off is changing gasoline with eFuels to assist decarbonize the auto business.

The German producer’s funding will assist the corporate obtain its 2030 sustainability technique and will safeguard Porsche’s motorsports pursuits in anticipation of future strict gas laws. While the exploration into artificial fuels advantages the corporate particularly, it additionally has the potential to shake up all the auto business with out threatening electrical automobile progress.

10 Reasons Why Synthetic Fuels (E-fuels) Are The Future

The race to seek out the ability supply of the longer term is on and artificial fels may very well be one in all them, however how possible are they actually?

In order to provide the latest and correct info doable, the info used to compile this text was sourced from numerous producer web sites and different authoritative sources, together with Porsche, Car and Driver, and Car Magazine.

Porsche Is Leading The Auto Industry In Developing Synthetic Fuels

Although Porsche goals for over 80 % of its new automobile fleet to be categorized as electric vehicles by the end of the decade, Porsche realizes nearly all of the corporate’s automobiles on the highway at present are gas-powered. The automaker plans to start with a focus on its most iconic car, the Porsche 911, in response to Car and Driver, and put eFuel on the market for sale by 2030, a Porsche consultant advised Car Magazine.

Porsche Is Committed

Porsche might not seem to be the plain selection. Why not a start-up? However, in response to Tatler, sustainability “isn’t just a destination for Porsche, it’s a holistic commitment.” So, focusing on a future fleet of all-electric vehicles like nearly all of the auto business does not appear to chop it for Porsche. Rather, the company hopes to create a clean energy solution for its automobiles nonetheless on the highway immediately — over 700,000 of those cars being 911s, in response to Road and Track.

Along with highway automobiles, Porsche is monitoring the alternatives for sustainable fuels on monitor as properly. The producer’s funding might imply huge issues for its racing groups. Although the corporate is already involved in electric motorsports series, together with Formula E, it goals to look into different gas choices for gas-powered and hybrid sports activities automobiles as properly.

Porsche isn’t the only one looking at eFuels. The president of IMSA advised The Detroit News in October that “the next step in fuel. Our fuel partner, VP, is currently providing us with 80 percent renewable fuel made from plant waste. But in the future, 100 percent renewable fuel could be in our playbook.” Additionally, Shell examined 100% renewable gas within the NTT IndyCar Series final February and can gas the sequence’ automobiles sooner or later.

“With the debut of the new fuel developed by Shell, the NTT IndyCar Series becomes the first United States-based motorsports series to power racing with 100 percent renewable race fuel that enables at least 60 percent of greenhouse gas emissions reduction compared to fossil-based gasoline,” the sequence announced.

What Porsche Has Done So Far

Porsche stated that the eFuels program will first concentrate on petrol engines by creating methanol via splitting a hydrogen cell and capturing carbon dioxide in the air. The two react and are then was a petroleum substance. While testing has solely simply begun, Porsche goals to inject eFuels into its present gas-powered automobiles within the coming years.

The mission is the primary of its variety in scale and scope, together with being the “world’s first integrated, large-scale commercial plant to manufacture synthetic, carbon-neutral fuels.” The power plant will use Chile’s wind and solar energy to gas the creation of eFuels.

Several Big Oil and power large executives attended the United Nations’ COP28 annual local weather summit at first of December in Dubai. One of the numerous firm leaders in attendance was Darren Woods, the CEO of ExxonMobil, who sat in on the convention for the primary time, in response to Bloomberg. While Woods confronted backlash after advocating for a “reduction” terminology within the local weather dialog slightly than totally phasing out non-renewable power sources, the corporate is investing in different gas sources.

The Companies Behind Porsche’s eFuels Project Include Big Energy Giants

ExxonMobil is one in all seven corporations included in Porsche’s Haru Oni mission to analysis and check sustainable fuels in Chile. The different corporations embody Enel, Siemens Energy, and energy providers local to Chile including Gasco, ENAP, and AME, in response to Porsche.

The resolution to put money into Chile was closely influenced by low power prices and taxes, together with a better quantity of wind turbine energy. Chile additionally goals to be the highest producer of the most affordable inexperienced hydrogen.

The resolution to put money into Chile was closely influenced by low power prices and taxes, together with a better quantity of wind turbine energy. As Porsche stated in a press launch, “The low cost of energy for manufacturing eFuels in Chile is not the only important factor: taxes and charges will also have an impact on the price, and therefore the financial success, of the product.”

The firm went on to say “eFuels will become competitive faster as fossil fuels become more expensive in the years ahead due to regulatory measures such as energy taxes and carbon pricing, as well as measures that make eFuels exempt from such charges.”

Fossil fuels are usually not simply set to turn into costly for shoppers, but additionally for power suppliers. While the Inflation Reduction Act put cash within the arms of utility corporations to put money into renewable sources, power corporations are nonetheless spending extra money to supply power unsustainably. A coverage and know-how firm, Energy Innovation, launched a report stating that almost the entire present coal-powered power processes within the United States would be cheaper if they were instead run by renewable energy sources.

Nowadays, it appears that evidently each different firm is saying a deadline to chop carbon emissions. But what does that appear to be, and the way are these corporations really being held to that timeframe? Earlier this 12 months, the Sierra Club revealed a examine arguing that utilities and companies that have specific timelines, even ones with dates reaching 25-plus years into the longer term, are unlikely to achieve these benchmarks.

Why? Simply put, the businesses aren’t appearing shortly sufficient to realize these targets realistically, stated Sierra. Part of the issue is a scarcity of a non-renewable transition technique. Another a part of the issue is a “one and done” or “all or nothing” method. Rather than photo voltaic or wind being the only real power supply, renewables could be seen as a spectrum or assortment of power sources that may work collectively with the intention to meet world power wants.

The improvement and testing of eFuels, though not totally carbon-neutral, matches into that spectrum.

How Porsche Plans For A Complementary Fuel To Electrification

Porsche stated that the change to electric mobility isn’t happening at a rate quick enough to fulfill the outlines of the Paris Agreement, the worldwide and legally binding United Nations local weather motion treaty. Although photo voltaic, wind, and different renewable power sources are rising and large contributors to lowering carbon emissions within the electrical energy and gas sectors, the entire change to inexperienced power will likely be tough with no mixture of a number of sources. Sustainable inexperienced fuels, like methanol, supply a further supply of practically carbon-neutral power.

“We urgently need a solution for operating existing fleets of vehicles in a sustainable way,” Michael Steiner, a Porsche Executive Board for Research and Development member, stated. “This aim could be achieved with inexperienced fuels, which are a sensible complement to electric vehicles.”

How Porsche’s Investment Will Alter The Energy Sector

The funding in inexperienced fuels is not simply set to alter the auto business, however the power business as an entire. As utilities and oil corporations are slammed with criticism and accusations of “greenwashing” following the worldwide local weather summit, Porsche is making an attempt to make the transition away from fossil fuels smoother by testing and promoting the closest factor to gasoline: a liquid substance that acts just like fuel and is easier to move in comparison with gaseous hydrogen.

Everything You Need To Know About Synthetic Fuels

Summary

  • Synthetic fuels, such as e-fuels, biofuels, and solar fuels, are being considered as substitutes for fossil fuels and electric vehicles in the automotive industry.
  • E-fuels, produced through electrolysis, are seen as a favorable option to preserve internal combustion engines, but they are not yet produced at scale and face challenges in meeting current demand.
  • Biofuels, including ethanol and biodiesel, offer cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels but have drawbacks such as lower energy efficiency and higher costs. Solar fuels, while holding potential, lack the technological means and financial backing to become widely adopted.

Synthetic fuels (or synfuels) are liquid or gaseous fuels that are practically similar to fossil fuels in everything but the way they’re produced. While conventional fossil fuels come from the process of organic matter being turned into coal, natural gas or oil, underground, over millions of years, synthetic fuels are produced artificially by replicating these natural processes, using renewable sources such as water, biomass, and carbon dioxide.

As the political demands for a carbon-neutral future (and mass electrification) get more persistent, many purists in the automotive industry keep clamoring for synthetic fuels to take over as a substitute for both fossil fuels and electric vehicles. Such is the case for Ferrari and Porsche, which are both heavily invested in e-fuels, a type of synfuel produced through electrolysis and seen as a suitable alternative to electric batteries. It is easy, at face value at least, to make a case for such an approach.

After all, synthetic fuels are what we call “drop-in” fuels. This means they are compatible with our internal combustion engines, and perfectly adaptable to the 168,000 gas-stations currently operating in the United States. On top of presenting a simpler option, they are also more eco-friendly than fossil fuels. Today, synfuels can be divided into three different types: e-fuels, biofuels, and solar fuels.

This is perhaps the most widely discussed type of synfuels right now. Electric fuels are produced from hydrogen, which is separated from water via a process known as electrolysis. This is in turn achieved using renewable electricity, which comes from wind and solar power plants. The hydrogen is synthesized into a liquid fuel using CO2 that has been taken from the atmosphere. This power-to-liquid modus operandi is known as the Fischer-Tropsch process.

Porsche Is Paving The Way

As electric vehicles have gained prominence, many experts and enthusiasts have gotten increasingly interested in e-fuels. While some see them as a threat to EVs, and a possible saving grace for internal combustion engines, others consider them to be in a losing battle against the inexorable rise of BEVs.

As of now, e-fuels are not yet produced at scale. It wasn’t until 2021that the world’s first commercial plant would open in Chile, backed by Porsche. The German manufacturer aims to eventually produce 550 million liters (145 million gallons) per year, but these figures are still a far cry from meeting the current demand in the United States alone.

Ferrari Wants To Follow Suit

In any case, the EU announced in March that some cars that are solely powered by e-fuels would be allowed to remain on sale after the 2035 ban on internal combustion engines. When asked about the decision, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna described it as a favorable turn of events.

“This is very good for us because you can run a thermal [combustion] car with fuel that is neutral, because you take the CO2 from the atmosphere and you merge it with other things. So I think that the two are very much compatible, and this is a reinforcement of our strategy, if you want.”

The strategy referred to by Vigna is one that includes various powertrains, which, to the delight of petrolheads, also includes internal combustion engines, as well as hybrids and EVs.

The Future Of Electric Fuels Is Still In LimboPorsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS

The proclivity towards electric fuels can be partly attributed to the fact that they represent a viable way to preserve internal combustion engines in the years to come. Moreover, they also allow countries with abundant amounts of solar and wind power to utilize and convert their natural resources into an alternative type of fuel that would diminish their dependence on foreign and local oil.

On the flip side, they also happen to be less efficient than electric batteries, and are only able to retain roughly 16 percent to 48 percent of the energy used. This means that their electricity generation requirements are two to ten times higher than their BEV counterparts, according to a study published by the Nature Climate Change in May 2021.

E-Fuels Won’t Replace EVs, But They Could Gain Momentum

Under the present conditions, it seems rather unlikely that e-fuels can become cheap and abundant early enough to replace fossil fuels on a broad scale. The study published by the Nature Climate Change journal strongly asserts that e-fuels cannot override the “urgent need for broad electrification”, and deems them unlikely to help reach the 2030 climate target. However, the research paper also judges e-fuels as likely to become a competitive option as technological advancements help reduce their processing costs over the years.

Biofuels: Liquid Fuels Derived From Organic Matter

The source of biofuels, known as biomass, refers to trees, energy crops, agricultural residue, and food and waste residues. Biofuels themselves are divided into two different types: Ethanol, and biodiesel. Unlike the other types of synfuels, both are widely found in commercial vehicles.

Ethanol Comes In Many Forms And Shapes

Ethanol is mostly made from plant starches and sugars, and it is even used as a blending agent in gasoline to increase octane and cut down emissions. It is conventionally used in the form of E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline) and E15 (15% ethanol, 85% gasoline). Some vehicles known as “flexible fuel vehicles” are designed to run on an E85 formula (a gasoline-ethanol combo consisting of 51-83% ethanol.) The latter was in fact offered on the Bentley Continental GT back in 2010.

The Cons Of Ethanol

While ethanol is a cleaner and cheaper alternative that can contribute additional torque and horsepower, it nonetheless comes with a particular set of issues that have played a role in reducing its spread. The problems with ethanol notably are the following:

  • It is more susceptible to dirt absorption
  • Dirt absorption can in turn damage the engine and result in hefty repair costs.
  • It can also require 1.5 times more to generate the same amount of energy compared to normal fossil-fuels.
  • It offers fewer miles per gallon than normal gas.

Biodiesel: A Biofuel Combining Vegetable Oils And Diesel Fuel

This one is rarely used in its pure form, but rather blended with fossil fuel. The most common biodiesel blend is B20 (from 6 to 20% percent biodiesel combined with petroleum diesel.), while the B5 formula (5% biodiesel) is also commonly found in fleet vehicles. In the United States, it is mainly sourced from soybean oil, as well as algae, granola, and animal tallow.

The Pros And Cons Of Biodesel

Aside from helping reduce a country’s dependence on foreign oil, biodiesel-powered vehicles can also be 30% more efficient than petroleum-based diesel engines. Furthermore, biodiesel is also higher in lubricity than normal diesel, which consequently reduces the wear and tear on the internal combustion engine. This, however, can also work as a double-edged sword and result in fuel filter clogs. On top of that, biodiesel can also be more difficult to store, due to its vegetable-based source products.

As a result, it needs to be kept at the right temperature, as excessive heat and cold can significantly damage it. What is also worth noting is the fact that it is 1.5 times more expensive, which is part of why it hasn’t taken off as a more popular option. But still, biodesels are still used in a wide variety of vehicles, including:

  • Range Rover Velar
  • Chevrolet Silverado
  • Chevrolet Colorado
  • GMC Terrain
  • Ford Transit
  • RAM 2400, 3500, 45000, and 5500.

Solar Fuels: The Forgotten Alternative

This is the least known form of synthetic fuel, as well as the least popular in the automotive industry. As a matter of fact, it has yet to receive considerable interest from any manufacturer, as its development keeps stagnating at the infancy level.

Solar Fuels Are More Versatile And Convenient

As indicated by their name, solar fuels are made from substances like water and carbon dioxide using sunlight energy. Solar fuels can come in many forms, such as:

  • Kerosene
  • Gasoline
  • Diesel methanol
  • Hydrogen
  • Synthetic crude oil

On paper, they would help make up for the intermittent availability of solar power, which has made the latter more expensive and difficult to harness on a grid-scale level. Furthermore, solar fuel would also provide an abundant source of liquid fuels to properly supply heavy-duty vehicles, ships, and aircraft, particularly in developing countries.

For Now, They Remain Overlooked By The Industry

While solar fuels are filled with potential, in theory at least, they still lack the technological means and financial backing to pick up the way biofuels and e-fuels have. This can be partly attributed to their costly nature. Under present conditions, making hydrogen from sunlight would turn out to be ten times more expensive than producing hydrogen using fossil fuels. This causes the need for more advanced technology that would cheapen the processing expenses.

Unfortunately, there is no clear indication that such progress would be feasible within the proper time frame. In the meantime, other alternatives are growing at a much faster pace. It will thus be interesting to see if solar fuels will ever gain the backing and momentum needed to ever become a fixture in the industry.

Rowan Atkinson Shows Support for Hydrogen Fuel by Driving Toyota GR Yaris H2 at Goodwood

Rowan Atkinson, famously known as Mr. Bean, made an appearance at Goodwood to express his support for alternative fuels. He drove a specially modified Toyota GR Yaris H2, showcasing his enthusiasm for cars and his stance as a strong advocate for the internal combustion engine.

The Toyota GR Yaris H2 Concept, prepared for the Goodwood event, retains its standard turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine. However, the engine management system has been adjusted to allow the car to run on hydrogen. Unlike a fuel cell vehicle, this concept directly injects hydrogen into the engine for internal combustion.

Atkinson, who already owns a regular GR Yaris, found the hydrogen-powered hot hatch to be a “tremendous fun” to drive. He commended Toyota and Formula One for their efforts in preserving the internal combustion engine by utilizing clean alternative fuels. Toyota is currently developing a GR H2 Le Mans prototype that will race on hydrogen fuel in 2026. Formula One plans to transition to hybrid powertrains running sustainable fuels within the same timeframe.

As an early adopter of electric car technology and a graduate in electrical and electronic engineering, Atkinson has become increasingly critical of electric cars. In an article he wrote for the Guardian, he expressed feeling “duped” and encouraged companies to explore alternative fuels like hydrogen to promote the sustainability of the internal combustion engine.

However, Atkinson still appreciates the concept of electric cars; he believes that, despite their heavy and expensive lithium-ion batteries, they are not the all-encompassing solution for the environment that they claim to be. His personal car collection includes notable vehicles such as a McLaren F1, Lancia Delta Integrale HF, and an Acura NSX, in addition to the GR Yaris.
