This city is electric: A trip through London in the MINI Cooper SE Convertible.

London. Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus – what’s the best way to start a tour in the MINI Cooper SE Convertible through a major city with nine million inhabitants and such a wealth of history? With “Courage”. This important quality for real change has been commemorated since 2018 by one of the newest statues in historic London in honour of women’s rights activist Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett. She was one of the driving forces for women’s suffrage. “Courage calls for courage everywhere” it says on the banner the figure of the first monument to a woman in Parliament Square in London is holding. It stands for social participation and equality.

Vibrant city brimming with diversity.
The centrally located, spacious square right next to the seat of the British Parliament in the Palace of Westminster gives us another brief opportunity for recharging. From here, we head east across the legendary 252-metre long Westminster Bridge in the MINI Cooper SE Convertible (power consumption combined: 17.2 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) right into the breathtaking atmosphere of London’s South Bank on the other side of the Thames.

At the centre of the 1.7-kilometre stretch of waterfront there is the Queen Elizabeth Hall, alongside the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal National Theatre. While a daily programme of classical, jazz and avant-garde concerts delights audiences in the upper part of the foyer building, the vibrant heart of London’s subculture pulsates in the basement. After all, the city’s best-known skateboarding area has been located here since the 1970s. Next door, London’s creative scene celebrates the city’s urban art made famous by Banksy with the colourful graffiti tunnel on Leake Street.

Historical and contemporary structures in exciting contrast
Passing the reconstruction of Shakespeare’s famous Globe Theatre, the route leads across London Bridge to the other side of the river again. On the bridge, the textile soft top of the MINI Cooper SE Convertible with its typical Union Jack design silently lowers to reveal an ever brightening English sky. Here in the east of the city, the enchanted church ruins of St Dunstan-in-the-East create an exciting contrast between history and modernity. The park is considered to be an insider’s tip and is located in and around the nave and offers a special place for the MINI passengers to rest and fill up their spent energy.

The MINI Cooper SE Convertible no longer has to do this in the classic sense we know from combustion engines. Instead, the 135 kW/184 hp electric motor favours agile and easily controllable handling and allows for 201 kilometres of locally emission-free open-air driving pleasure according to the WLTP test cycle.

A stop at the London Sky Garden is a good idea to enjoy a view over the city on the Thames that is as goods from a convertible. London’s highest garden is located on the 35th floor of a skyscraper called “Walkie-Talkie” because of its distinctive shape. Admission is free and guarantees a fantastic view of the city, where you can already spot the next sightseeing attractions.

Looking west, St Paul’s Cathedral, in the middle of Europe’s largest financial centre – the borough of City of London – is easily recognisable as one of the largest churches in the world. In the centre of the 158-metre-long cathedral there is the 750 ton roof lantern suspended at a height of 111 metres. 111 metres correspond to exactly 365 feet, i.e. one foot for each day of the year.

Before this eventful day draws to a close, a spot in front of the magnificently lit Somerset House guarantees a spectacular view of the sea of lights at night along the Thames. Home to cultural pioneers, Somerset House links up creativity and art with society. Part of the neoclassical building belongs to King’s College, one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in the world.

London doesn’t sleep, it shines.
On the opposite side of the river, the buildings lit up in bright colours and the iconic London Eye are already reflected in the water of the Thames. At 135 metres high and with its 32 floor-to-ceiling glass gondolas, on a clear day you can see 40 kilometres away to the royals’ Windsor Castle outside London.

For today, however, a glance from the sports seats of the open MINI Cooper SE Convertible into the clear night sky over London is enough to let all the great impressions pass in review. And already dream of the next day full of open-air go-kart feeling in this electrifying metropolis.

BMW Group successfully completes €8bn revolving credit facility

Munich. The BMW Group has signed a €8.0 billion syndicated revolving credit facility (RCF) with a tenor of five years and two one-year extension options.

A total of 43 international and regional banks from Europe, America and Asia have taken part in the transaction. With BNP Paribas, Citi and Deutsche Bank as coordinating bookrunners, the BMW Group has replaced the existing RCF of €8.0 billion signed in 2017.

For the first time, the BMW Group has consistently presented its strategic focus on sustainability within the syndication process: First, it handed a newly developed, comprehensive sustainability factsheet over to the banks involved to provide transparent information on its progress and goals. In a second step, the BMW Group issued questionnaires to the lenders, aiming at reflecting the outside-in perspectives of its sustainability performance, providing impetus for the continuous further development of sustainability communications.

“At the BMW Group, sustainability is practiced in its three facets -economically, ecologically and socially. It is present in the various divisions of the company, its goals are omnipresent, and sustainability is the focus of our long-term strategy. For the first time, we have comprehensively revealed our corresponding activities in a global financing process,” said Walter Mertl, Chief Financial Officer of BMW AG in Munich on Wednesday. “For us, sustainability means more than just achieving selected key figures. Our cross-company approach goes far beyond that, and we present our progress transparently and comprehensibly for the capital market and the public.”

The syndication process was completed by an exchange of the participating banks with the company’s sustainability experts, who explained and made transparent in more detail the strategic direction and sustainable transformation of the BMW Group.

The syndicated revolving credit line is one of the standard financing instruments of BMW Group Corporate Finance and serves to secure short-term access to liquidity. In the history of the company, the RCF has never been drawn.

BMW Motorrad Unveils the M 1000 XR Prototype

BMW Motorrad has presented the M 1000 XR prototype, which is the third M model at BMW Motorrad, as a long-distance sports bike with high long-range capability and a performance-oriented experience on the road and the racetrack. This model is designed for customers with the highest demands for performance, exclusivity, and individuality.

The M 1000 XR prototype is a preview of a supersports motorcycle that provides excellent performance on the country road, long-distance travel, and racetrack equally. It’s a crossover bike that opens up dynamic riding dimensions in the sports motorcycle segment.

The four-cylinder engine from the BMW S 1000 RR super sports bike with BMW ShiftCam technology for varying the timing and valve lift is used in the M 1000 XR prototype. It delivers an engine output of more than 147 kW (200 hp), a DIN empty weight of only 223 kg fully fuelled, and is aerodynamically designed for high-performance road use, long-distance riding, and fast laps on the racetrack. The M Competition Package, available as an optional extra, reduces even more weight and increases riding dynamics. The M XR prototype’s top speed is around 280 km/h.

The specifications for developing the M 1000 XR prototype included drive and suspension technology as well as aerodynamics. The new M 1000 XR was given winglets to ensure superior riding stability even at high speeds. The winglets help achieve the best possible contact between the wheels and the road surface, counteract the wheelie tendency during acceleration, and regulate the traction control system to convert more drive power into acceleration. The M XR also features the M brake, developed directly from the experience gained with the racing brakes on BMW Motorrad factory racing machines in the Superbike World Championship.

BMW Motorrad will release further information on the new BMW M 1000 XR in the second half of 2023. The M XR prototype is a perfect fusion of performance, design, and innovative technologies; it is a long-distance sports motorcycle that meets the highest demands for riding on the racetrack, the country road, and long-distance journeys.

BMW M Motorsport News, 6th June 2023

The BMW M Motorsport teams were busy last weekend, participating in events across Europe, Asia, and North America. BMW M Team Studie achieved its first victory of the season in the GT300 class of the Japanese Super GT Championship. The BMW M4 GT3, driven by Seiji Ara and Masataka Yanagida, won the 450km race held at Suzuka, after the race was suspended due to a crash by Nissan driver Tsugio Matsuda. The BMW team opted for an early pit stop, which helped them to claim the lead when the race was stopped. Matsuda suffered injuries but was not majorly hurt.

In the GT4 European Series, BMW M4 GT4 earned a spot on the podium. The Hofor Racing by Bonk Motorsport duo of Gabriele Piana and Michael Schrey, started from pole position on Sunday and finished second in the chaotic closing stages of the race held at Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, France. Berkay Besler and Tom Edgar battled their way back to fourth place, but were later given a 43-second penalty due to a rules violation. In the race held on Saturday, Besler and Edgar were the best-placed BMW pairing in seventh. Meanwhile, Victor Bouveng and Joakim Walde from M-Bilar Racing won the Pro-Am class in the BMW M4 GT4 and finished third in their class on Sunday.

The IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge was hosted in Detroit on Saturday, where Turner Motorsport faced a scary moment when Robert Megennis crashed their BMW M4 GT4 spectacularly, taking off and skidding over the roof of a rival’s car before hitting the safety fence. Fortunately, both drivers were unharmed. The second Turner duo of Robby Foley and Vincent Barletta finished ninth in the #96 car, while the BMW M4 GT4 of Stephen Cameron Racing finished 17th.

In the world of virtual racing, BMW drivers and teams shone at the race weekend in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS (GTWC) at Le Castellet. Neil Verhagen and Dries Vanthoor achieved great results in the Fanatec Esports GT Pro Series, winning for the BMW M Team WRT and ROWE Racing team, respectively. Calan Williams won the sim race in his category with the Gold Cup car for the WRT team. BMW M Team BS+COMPETITION’s Arthur Kammerer and Gregor Schill had a strong performance in the SRO Esports Sim Pro Series. The BMW M SIM Cup held its fifth round at the Watkins Glen circuit on the iRacing platform, with Team Redline winning the GT3 class and Team Apex Racing Academy clinching the victory in the GTP class.

Jesse Krohn, BMW M works driver, was a guest starter for the Century Motorsport team in the GT Cup Championship at Snetterton, helping his team-mate and British GT driver Darren Leung to better understand the BMW M4 GT3. They finished with two third-places and two fifth-places. In the British Touring Car Championship, Adam Morgan finished runner-up for Team BMW and claimed one podium in three races while fellow BMW drivers had a series of strong results.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport WorldSBK Riders Show Resilience in Challenging Misano Weekend

The BMW Motorrad WorldSBK riders showed their fighting spirit during a challenging weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Despite facing adversity, the team managed to deliver impressive results during the fifth round of the FIM Superbike World Championship 2023.

Yellow and red flags interrupted the Superpole qualification on Saturday, but Scott Redding managed to secure 12th place, with Gerloff in 14th, Sykes in 18th, and Baz in 19th. Unfortunately, Baz was later demoted three places for race one due to a penalty incurred during the third practice session. The best result for BMW in the first race on Saturday was delivered by Redding, who finished in 11th place.

In the Superpole race on Sunday morning, Gerloff moved up to ninth place, while Redding was in 11th place and Baz in 13th. Unfortunately, Sykes took a tumble, but he managed to finish the race in 20th place.

During the second main race, Gerloff recorded his best result of the season by finishing in eighth place. Baz started from the back of the field, battled his way up to 12th place, and Sykes crossed the finish line in 13th position. Redding made a great start, moving up from 13th to ninth, but struggled during the race and finished in 14th position.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director, Marc Bongers, praised the team’s fighting spirit, but acknowledged that there’s still work to be done. The sixth round of the season in the WorldSBK 2023 will take place from 30th June to 2nd July at Donington Park (GBR).

The BMW riders shared their reactions to the race in Misano:

  • Garrett Gerloff, Bonovo action BMW Racing Team, was reasonably happy with his eighth-place finish and is motivated for the next races at Donington.
  • Scott Redding, ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team, acknowledged that the weekend was quite difficult, and the team will keep working to find a solution.
  • Loris Baz, Bonovo action BMW Racing Team, expressed his disappointment with the bike’s issues but praised the team’s mechanics for fixing it in time for the race. He hopes that their bad luck is finally over.
  • Tom Sykes, ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team, acknowledged the difficulty in finding a base setting during a race weekend but appreciated the team’s hard work in gathering information to move forward.

ROWE Racing Takes Third Place in the GT World Challenge Europe 1000km Race at Paul Ricard

In the second Endurance Cup race of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS (GTWC), BMW M works drivers Philipp Eng, Marco Wittmann, and Nick Yelloly of ROWE Racing claimed third place at the 1000km race of Paul Ricard. This is the team’s second podium finish in the series, maintaining their lead in the standings. However, they had to settle for third place after final stint driver Yelloly lacked the required pace to defend the lead position.

The BMW Junior Team finished in sixth place, while Valentino Rossi, Maxime Martin, and Augusto Farfus finished eighth for the BMW M Team WRT after a strong chasing performance.

Despite starting from 11th on the grid, the #98 car came in fourth but was later classified third when a five-second penalty was imposed on the Audi that finished ahead of them. Similarly, the #46 BMW M4 GT3 moved up 12 positions from 20th to eighth in an impressive performance.

The #32 BMW M4 GT3 from the BMW M Team WRT, which started in ninth place, was not able to finish the race due to technical issues. The #30 BMW M4 GT3 of the WRT team and the #35 BMW M4 GT3 from Walkenhorst Motorsport also did not finish the race.

ROWE Racing’s Philipp Eng was pleased with the team’s performance, saying that they had made significant improvements to the car after finishing practice sessions quite far off the lead on Friday. Max Hesse of ROWE Racing also expressed satisfaction with the team’s competitiveness in the race.

Valentino Rossi of the BMW M Team WRT acknowledged that they wanted more from the race but were satisfied with an 8th place finish from 20th on the grid.

Meanwhile, Charles Weerts of the BMW M Team WRT expressed disappointment over their DNF status resulting from a slight collision with a teammate. The team will now focus on the next race in Spa.

BMW Motorrad’s Award-Winning Brand Room at BMW Welt

The BMW Welt in Munich boasts the Brand & Customer Institute, which is the only one of its kind in the automotive industry. It allows chosen partners and employees to immerse themselves in BMW Group’s brands, including BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, and BMW Motorrad, which has had its own brand room since January 2022.

BMW Motorrad’s brand room was named “Brand Architecture” in the “Spatial Communication” category of last year’s Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design. The “Red Dot Design Award” has been adjudicating for the awards since 1954, with the red dot symbolising quality and excellence and becoming internationally recognised.

BMW Motorrad received the iF DESIGN AWARD as the latest recognition, which has been a globally accepted symbol of excellent design since 1954 and is one of the leading global design awards. The BMW Motorrad brand room was able to win over the 133 independent and international experts on the jury for the award for its excellent architectural design and an emotionally crafted brand training programme, making it one of the leading design honours.

The design challenges for the BMW Motorrad brand room were significant because of the small area of 38 square metres, which required the immersion of imaginative brand concepts in inspiring architecture. The solution was a multi-sensory interior design that harmonised with the iconic glass facade of the existing building and supported the interactive experience in the space. The result was an experience that excited curiosity and creativity in visitors who could explore the BMW Motorrad brand and its world.

The customers and fans of BMW Motorrad know that the brand embodies an active lifestyle and experience-oriented attitude, which is the brand promise of “Make Life a Ride.” In the BMW Motorrad brand room designed to cater to personal experiences, the brand’s thematic focus areas are offered through fascinating brand access points that serve as interactive immersion experiences. The BMW Motorrad brand room is a place of communication and dialogue, analogous to a motorcyclist gathering around the campfire that provides a perfect backdrop for training sessions.

In essence, the BMW Motorrad brand room is a holistic experiential concept, featuring elements that appeal to all the senses, including sound, light, and natural materials. The combination of unique features and holistic design makes the BMW Motorrad brand room a memorable and creative experience.

BMW has made it easy to experience the BMW Motorrad brand among other BMW Group brands in the BMW Motorrad brand room at BMW Welt Munich since January 2022. The Brand Mover Training immersive experience in the BMW Motorrad brand room gives visitors all the insight into the brand and its customer types and values through interactive training sessions that simulate all the senses.

BMW Motorrad Motorsport Ready for WorldSBK at Misano

After a month-long break, BMW Motorrad Motorsport is heading to Misano in Italy for round five of the FIM Superbike World Championship 2023 (WorldSBK) from 2nd to 4th June. The ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team, with Scott Redding and Tom Sykes, and the Bonovo action BMW Racing Team of Garrett Gerloff and Loris Baz had a productive two-day test at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli three weeks ago to prepare for the upcoming races.

The BMW M 1000 RR riders had different programmes at the Misano test for their individual requirements. They compared components, worked on geometry and weight distribution, and Scott and Garrett focused on these aspects. Tom Sykes is stepping in for Michael van der Mark, who is currently injured. According to Marc Bongers, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director, the test was good preparation for the coming races, with BMW riders well equipped.

Quotes Ahead of the Misano Round

Marc Bongers, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director, said that the team’s goal is to perform well with both teams and all four riders at Misano. He wants to convert their hard work into good results and is confident that Loris Baz will be stronger at Misano after his weigh-in test, which was about getting a feel for the bike after his leg injury. He also gave Tom the opportunity to get familiarized with the BMW M RR and Michael’s crew.

Garrett Gerloff is looking forward to the Misano event and showing off what he can do on Friday. It’s a track he enjoys, and he mentioned that the team had a test a few weeks ago, so they feel they are in a good place for the setup. Scott Redding is also happy about the weekend, and he hopes they can make improvements from Barcelona where they tried different setup changes. Tom Sykes said he’s excited to compete for the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team and looks forward to heading to Misano, where the circuit always produces great racing. Loris Baz said he’s finally feeling 100% going into this race, and it feels good. He stated that he loves going to Misano and that he’s confident heading into the race.

BMW M Motorsport News, 30th May 2023

Björn Lellmann, who is the Head of Customer Racing at BMW M Motorsport, shared how the new season in the DTM and associated series began last weekend. Although the BMW M4 GT3 did not perform perfectly at Oschersleben, BMW M Motorsport had many things to be happy about. The all-new BMW M4 GT4 performed extremely well in the very competitive ADAC GT4 Germany, earning four podiums in just two races for Walkenhorst Motorsport and Project 1. In the British GT, Century Motorsport achieved more podium finishes in the GT4 class, and earned fifth place in the overall standings with the BMW M4 GT3, and likewise, grabbing valuable championship points. A week before, privateer BMW M Motorsport teams earned a total of six class wins in the Nürburgring 24-hour race, included the new BMW M4 GT4 in the hotly contested SP10 category. The BMW M2 CS Racing was likewise triumphant in the TC America. In the Italian GT Championship, Ceccato Racing reached the podium for BMW M Motorsport. Lellmann was ecstatic with these stupendous results and congratulated all the teams and drivers.

In the ADAC GT4 Germany series hosted at Oschersleben, the new BMW M4 GT4 jumped onto the scene with a bang, capturing four podium finishes. Three of these podium places belonged to Walkenhorst Motorsport. In the first race that took place on Saturday, Sami-Matti Trogen (FIN) and Enzo Joulié (FRA) landed second place. They were followed by their team-mates Nico Hantke (GER) and Mex Jansen (NED). The BMW M4 GT4 earned second place in Sunday’s race. The Project 1 team succeeded in capturing second place with the reigning BMW M2 Cup champion, Maxime Oosten (NED) and Michal Makes (CZE). Walkenhorst Motorsport’s Hantke and Jansen obtained third place once again. The BMW M4 GT4 from Hofor Racing by Bonk Motorsport and FK Performance Motorsport both secured top-five and top-ten positions. The Sunday race marked the BMW M4 GT4 earning second, third, fourth, and fifth positions.

The BMW M2 Cup also had the commencement of its season at Oschersleben, showcasing a competitive 16-car field. However, Denny Berndt (GER) grabbed first place in both the races and secured two wins in the BMW M2 CS Racing. Max Rosam (GER) and Leyton Fourie (RSA) placed in second and third positions on Saturday, while Rosam took second place again on Sunday and Bart Horsten (AUS) secured third place. The BMW M2 Cup will be part of the support programme for six out of the eight DTM race weekends, with the upcoming race weekend scheduled for the Norisring (GER).

At the British GT Championship race weekend held at Donington Park (GBR), BMW M works drivers Dan Harper and Darren Leung (both GBR)’s fifth place finish in the overall standings is notable, following their victory at Silverstone. In the GT4 category, Carl Cavers and Lewis Plato (both GBR) gained third place and second place in the Pro-Am category in the BMW M4 GT4 with number #22. The team’s #14 BMW M4 GT4 driven by Michael Johntson and Chris Salkeld (both GBR) obtained third position in the Pro-Am standings. In contrast, Harper and Leung sit in third place in the drivers’ standings with 68.5 points.

In the third round of the season in the Fanatec GT World Challenge America powered by AWS that was held at the Circuit Of The Americas near Austin (USA), BimmerWorld and ST Racing was present with one BMW M4 GT3 each. In the Pro class, Chandler Hull and Bill Auberlen (both USA) placed fourth in the BimmerWorld #94 BMW M4 GT3 at the circuit. In the Pro-Am class, Samantha Tan (CAN) and BMW M works driver John Edwards (USA) secured the fifth place in the ST Racing #38 BMW M4 GT3.

BimmerWorld BMW M4 GT4 #51 from Auto Technic Racing driven by John Dubets and Zac Anderson (both USA) earned the overall win and victory in the Silver class in the first of two GT4 America races. In the second race, they landed third place overall and second in the Silver standings. The BMW M4 GT4s obtained a one-two result in the Am standings. Rooster Hall Racing earned second place in the Pro-Am class. The BMW drivers earned five out of six podium positions in the two TC America races.

In the Italian GT Championship Endurance Cup held at Pergusa (ITA), the Ceccato Racing team secured third place and won the Pro-Am class with the #7 BMW M4 GT3 driven by Stefano Comandini, Marco Cassarà (both ITA), and Alfred Nilsson (SWE) after braving the rain throughout the two-hour race.

The BMW M2 CS Racing Cup Benelux race was held at Red Bull Ring (AUT), and Senna van Soelen (NED) and Leyton Fourie (RSA) won first place in both races. BMW 330e M Sport claimed podium finishes in the British Touring Car Championship at Snetterton (GBR). In both races, Jake Hill from the Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport team came second, followed by Colin Turkington from Team BMW who came third. All four BMW drivers placed in the top ten in the third and final race, with Stephen Jelley (GBR) capturing sixth place.
