Here’s How Jeep’s Electric Future Is Shaping Up

A recent source from JL Wrangler Forums, reveals Jeep’s plans for electric vehicle expansion. According to Stellantis’s official union agreement, Jeep intends to continue the current Wrangler and Gladiator until 2028.

Jeep plans a mid-cycle facelift for the Gladiator soon and significant upgrades for the 4xe PHEV models in 2025. A fully electric next-generation Wrangler with an optional range extender will come after 2028. These vehicles will be constructed at the North and South Toledo Assembly Complex in Ohio, which will undergo a $1.5 million renovation as part of the company’s investment strategy. Jeep® Introduces New 2024 Wrangler to the UK

 

Jeep has announced that the new 2024 Wrangler will be coming to the UK. The 2024 Wrangler offers a combination of off-road capability, authentic Jeep design, open-air freedom, advanced powertrain, and superior on and off-road dynamics. It comes with greater capability, new technology, and advanced safety features, while still staying true to the Wrangler formula.

The new Wrangler will be available in Sahara and Rubicon trims, with prices starting at £60,785 OTR and £62,785 OTR respectively. First deliveries are scheduled for the first half of 2024. 

The 2024 Wrangler features an updated look with an iconic seven-slot grille, new wheel designs, and a new Anvil paint color option. Inside, it offers more comfort and safety with 12-way power front seats, a 12.3” Uconnect 5 touchscreen infotainment system, and side curtain airbags. Other notable features include a full-float Dana rear axle on Rubicon models, second-row outboard seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, and a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Jeep has also announced that it has sold five million Wranglers worldwide, setting new levels of 4×4 capability with each new generation.

“The new 2024 Jeep Wrangler is enhancing its role as the ‘hero model’ of the Jeep lineup by combining legendary capability with more technology, comfort, and safety features,” said Eric Laforge, Head of Jeep Brand in Europe.

The Wrangler will be available in Sahara and Rubicon trims, and each trim level will offer a wide range of standard equipment. The Sahara trim level includes features such as new 18” wheel design, a 12.3” touchscreen infotainment system, LED lamps, heated front seats, and more. The Rubicon trim level includes features such as a new 17” wheel design, a 12.3” touchscreen radio, Nappa seats with leather inserts, and more.

The new Wrangler offers legendary go-anywhere 4×4 capability with features such as Rock-Trac and Selec-Trac full-time transfer cases, crawl ratios of up to 77:1, and uncompromising approach, departure, and breakover angles. It also comes with a proven body-on-frame design, a finely engineered five-link suspension system, and a range of open-air freedom options.

The Wrangler features an iconic design with a new grille, new wheel designs, and multiple open-air freedom options. Its interior boasts premium features and technology, including a 12.3” touchscreen infotainment system with the Uconnect 5 system.

The Wrangler is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that delivers 272hp and 400Nm of torque. It meets European Euro 6D-Final emissions standards and is available on both Sahara and Rubicon models.

Goodyear Introduces New Wrangler Boulder MT Tire for Off-Roading

Goodyear has added a new tire to its Wrangler all-terrain lineup, and it certainly looks aggressive. The new Wrangler Boulder MT features an aggressive tread pattern and three-ply Duraply Technology to protect the sidewalls when navigating rocky or muddy terrains.

The exact details of Duraply Technology are not provided by Goodyear, but it is said to add protection to both the sidewalls and the tread. The large blocks and deep grooves in the tread help in challenging conditions like mud and sand, while also preventing the accumulation of stones.

The First Wrangler: A YJ Designation

Running from 1987-1995, the YJ Wrangler looks a bit weird compared to other Jeeps. The vehicle did away with the classic round headlight look of Jeeps past, while keeping the iconic seven slot grill, a Jeep mainstay. It also has wipers that rest at an angle on the windshield. In some Jeep circles it may be called a “Yuppie Jeep.”

Still, the body looks very much like a CJ, and it is definitely recognizable as a Jeep. People either hate the square headlights, or love them as a unique feature. The YJ also did away with the V-8 engines from AMC that the CJ used, setting a precedent for the Wrangler that would carry through the next generation, and that is the inline-six cylinder engine.

The YJ came with a four cylinder option, but it’s the inline-six cylinder that should be sought after, specifically the High Output 4.0 Liter that came about in 1991. This engine was fuel injected besides an increase in output, and was the top engine choice throughout even the TJ generation. Note that these are more common output figures, but they vary dependent on model and year, even though most older Wranglers will have the 2.5-liter or 4.0. Transmission types and specs also vary.

Despite it’s unique features, the YJ was very adaptable. With the turn signals integrated into the grill, the front fenders could easily be removed from the tub, to add high clearance flat steel fenders for example. Want more lift? Simply flip the leaf springs that are on all four corners on top of the axles, making what’s called a spring over axle lift, instantly and easily adding inches of ground clearance in the process.

Also of note, 1992 featured the first stock Jeep roll cage that was extended all the way to the back of the tub, providing added protection for the rear bench seat passengers in the event of a roll-over. It was the 1992 Sahara model that was featured in the film Jurassic Park. Today the YJ is its own sought after dinosaur, as an easy and cheap builder.

Besides the four-cylinder engine, another weak point of the YJ was the stock Dana 35 rear axle, which would require at least a build up for larger tires. If one wants to run 35-inch tires or more, an axle swap is definitely worth looking into. Equipped with a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission, larger tires often necessitates axle re-gearing as well. The same principles apply to the TJ, the next still relatively simple Wrangler, but one that remains familiar.

The TJ Signifies “Top Jeep”

The TJ existed from 1997-2006, as there was no 1996 model Wrangler. The vehicle returns the look of the Wrangler to the classic round headlights of the Willys and CJs before it, and the wipers now sit flush with the bottom of the windshield as they normally would. Besides that, it is very similar looking to the YJ, but the turn signals have now moved onto the fenders, which are still just bolted to the tub that is frame mounted. Of course the top and doors are fully removable, and the top can be hard, soft, or of bikini variation.

The TJ is very accepting to mods, from appearance to off-road performance, and the aftermarket availability is grand. Not to mention the junkyard gems! Like the YJ, the TJ employs full- or half-door options. The interior is completely redesigned, however, and the vehicle features the added safety of airbags for the first time. Another Wrangler first, the TJ employs the use of an advanced four-corner coil suspension setup. By 2000, the 4.0-liter featured 190 horsepower with 235 pound-feet of torque, solidifying it’s status as a kick-ass engine.

The advent of the Rubicon in 2003, resets the off-road market, which again experiences a seismic shift with the simultaneous addition of the “LJ” model. The Rubicon featured:

  • 31-inch tires
  • Dana 44 axles
  • 4.10 axle gears
  • Front and rear on-demand axle lockers
  • Unique Diamond plate rocker guards
  • 4:1 low range transfer case

The Rubicon trim was designed to take on the Rubicon trail in California right out of the gate, hence the name. The LJ, or “Long Jeep,” is officially a TJL. It’s the first Wrangler Unlimited, and has a 10-inch longer wheelbase than the regular TJ. Also, it has 15-inch longer tub, giving the vehicle more cargo space especially behind the rear bench seat.

Looking more like the CJ-8 Scrambler, the extended wheelbase adds some buildup potential. The longer wheelbase makes it easier to remain steady on steep grade climbs, even though it makes for a more shallow break-over angle. Want to add a doubler, or splitter, for more gearing options? It’s a lot simpler with the added wheelbase of the Unlimited over the base TJ body and frame.

The TJL Rubicon was only available for two years from 2005-2006, making this Wrangler the unicorn among all Jeeps. The LJ set up is so desired that aftermarket companies actually make kits to covert TJs to TJL dimensions. However, keep in mind that a regular TJ or LJ can be built to a higher standard more cheaply than a Rubicon. Just be sure to have a good base builder, one with a Dana 44 rear axle and 4.0 Liter engine, with the transmission of choice. All Unlimited Wranglers, Rubicons or not, came with such a configuration.

A JK: The First Four-Door Wrangler

The next-gen Wrangler, the JK, became the first one to feature a four-door option. This was a popular choice, as bigger SUVs and trucks were becoming the norm, but it’s a change that leads many Jeepers to call the TJ the “last of the real Jeeps.” Of course, a two-door option still exists, but the four-door is the new Unlimited.

There are other reasons too, for one the 4.0-liter is gone, replaced eventually by the balanced 3.6-liter Pentastar (a 3.8-liter was used until 2011). This being a V-6 motor with 285 horsepower, and 260 pound-feet of torque, the new top engine. A six-speed manual was available, a type which was first installed in a Wrangler in 2005, during the prior TJ gen. The other option was a five-speed auto. Also, the fenders are now a part of the body structure, and not easily removable.

Given that off-road Jeepers want bare-bones vehicles, a Wrangler with power windows may be frowned upon. You can thank the JK for bringing standard touchscreens to the Wrangler. These are the types of changes that came about with the JK, or is it “Just Kidding” generation?

All jokes aside, the JK Wrangler remained red-hot, and one won’t find any lacking number alongside any other Jeep on the trails or streets. Indeed, the JK sold from 2007-2018, oddly enough alongside the next-gen JL introductory year. Still with solid front and rear axles, removable top and doors, fold down windshield, and all the main Rubicon goodies of the original Rubicon TJ, the JK remained a 4×4 with capabilities that perhaps only another Wrangler could match out of the box. This Wrangler must mean “Just Killer.”

The JL Further Takes The Wrangler Into The Modern Tech Realm

The JL Wrangler, the latest and current generation, definitely modernized the vehicle as a whole. Not only did the consumer receive a factory 392 HEMI monster, something that Jeepers have clamored about for years, but also the first hybrid Wrangler arrived. Known as the 4xe, pronounced “four-by-E,” this hybrid Wrangler is the most powerful one to date besides the 392. Equipped with an industry first (for a plug-in hybrid), front and rear locking differentials, it also is the top-selling plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in America.

It’s safe to say that the JL is “Just Leading” all the competition. The only other new vehicle today like it is the Ford Bronco, one that has been recently revived after years at rest. The latter simply does not provide the pedigree of the former, nor has it gained as much trust among off-road enthusiasts, for the Wrangler remains the top choice for an off-road SUV.

All this technology and resulting capability is impressive, but it further complicates a historically simple machine, especially in the 4xe trim. Furthermore, it may be over-kill for what most need from a Wrangler. Even so, the options exist to reflect a changing market. This means some will hold on to their older variants, but that also new buyers will be attracted to Jeep like never before. As if a 392 and hybrid aren’t enough choices, a 2.0-liter turbo, and 3.0-liter EcoDiesel were also available alongside the 3.6L carryover.

2024 Jeep Gladiator Spy Photos Show Updated Interior Inspired by Wrangler

The Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator share many similarities. The 2024 Wrangler has already unveiled its refreshed appearance, and now it’s the Gladiator’s turn. While the changes are minimal, the recent spy shots reveal that Jeep has not tried to keep them a secret, as there is no camouflage visible anywhere.

This includes the interior as well. Previous spy shots of the Gladiator showed the exterior design, but the dash and center touchscreen were covered, concealing any changes. Although we don’t get an up-close look here, a glimpse through the passenger window of this white Jeep reveals all we need to know. The screen is definitely larger, and there are no visible climate vents next to it.

If the Gladiator follows the 2024 Wrangler’s interior upgrades, we can expect a new 12.3-inch center screen. In order to make room for it on the existing dash, the iconic round climate vents on both sides have been removed. Instead, rectangular vents are now positioned directly below the screen. However, the center stack of tactile controls remains the same. The center console also remains unchanged, but there are some minor trim changes on the passenger side of the dash and the driver instrument cluster, bringing a sense of rectangular symmetry to the entire panel. Nevertheless, round climate vents can still be found at the corners.

In addition to the visual changes, it is likely that the Gladiator will receive tech upgrades, including the latest Uconnect 5 software. It would also make sense for Jeep to add the Trails Offroad guide, which is available on the Wrangler. And while we’re discussing unseen upgrades, the 2024 Gladiator might also share the Wrangler’s upgraded Dana 44 HD Full Float rear axle on Rubicon trims.

The 2024 Jeep® Wrangler, the most capable vehicle in the world, has arrived in the United States, with information on its UK launch to be announced later in the year.

It builds on its history with an unmatched combination of off-road capability, authentic Jeep design, open-air freedom, advanced powertrains, superior on and off-road dynamics and a host of innovative safety and advanced technology features. 

New for the 2024 model year, the Wrangler features a full-float Dana rear axle, available 100:1 crawl ratio, new factory Warn winch and increased 5,000-lb tow capability. Inside, customers get to experience more comfort and safety, with a new interior featuring power front seats, standard 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen radio and standard side curtain airbags in the first and second rows.

New models bolster and broaden Wrangler line-up:

Featuring the award-winning 375-horsepower and 470-lb-feet of torque plug-in powertrain that efficiently returns 21 miles of all-electric range and 49 MPGe, the Wrangler Sports S 4xe features a standard 12.3-inch digital touchscreen, power windows and door locks, adaptive cruise control with stop, forward collision warning, side curtain airbags, remote keyless entry, premium soft-top, 20-inch aluminium wheels and Gorilla glass windshield.

Also new for 2024 is the Rubicon X model. Available with both ICE and 4xe powertrains, the new Rubicon X adds capability, style and technology to the upper levels of the Wrangler line-up.

Based on the legendary Rubicon, the premium Rubicon X adds a 12.3-inch digital touchscreen with navigation, 12-way power-adjustable front seats, nine-speaker premium Alpine audio system and Nappa leather seats on the inside. Meanwhile, a Rock-Trac full-time transfer case, integrated off-road camera, steel bumpers, body-colour hardtop and body-colour fender flares take care of business on the outside.

The new 2024 Wrangler 4xe builds on the Jeep brand’s goal of Zero Emission Freedom in its effort to become the greenest SUV brand in the world, building the most capable and sustainable Jeep SUVs.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe models, along with a range of electrified powertrains, will play a role for the Jeep brand as it follows the Stellantis Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan. Electrified and more efficient propulsion systems help Stellantis cut its global carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 and lead the transportation industry by achieving net carbon zero by 2038. By 2030, 100% of Jeep vehicles in Europe will be fully electric.

From the 49 MPGe electrified 4xe plug-in hybrid to the V8-powered 470-horsepower Rubicon 392, the new 2024 Jeep Wrangler offers customers the ability to choose from the most diverse powertrain options in the off-road segment. This gives Wrangler customers the ability to choose the engine that best suits their lifestyle. The advanced 4xe lineup and high-performance Rubicon 392 come exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.0 and 3.6-litre gas engines offer both a six-speed manual transmission and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe powertrain integrates two electric motors and a 400-volt battery pack with a fuel-efficient, turbocharged, 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission.

Key output of the Wrangler 4xe powertrain includes 375 horsepower (280 kW), 470 lb.-ft. (637 Nm) of torque and 49 MPG.

Safety and security were paramount in the development of the new 2024 Jeep Wrangler, which offers more than 85 available active and passive safety and security features.

Forward collision warning and advanced cruise control with stop now come standard on Sport S and above. Blind-spot, cross-path detection and ParkSense rear park-assist system come standard on High Altitude, Rubicon X and Rubicon 392. They are also available on Sport S, Willys, Sahara and Rubicon. A ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines, traction control and electronic stability control (ESC) with electronic roll mitigation are standard on all models.

The new 2024 Jeep Wrangler builds on a sculptural design aesthetic that is immediately recognisable with its traditional Jeep design cues. The 2024 Wrangler’s iconic seven-slot grille, first introduced on the 2023 Wrangler Rubicon 20th Anniversary, wears an updated look with black textured slots, neutral grey metallic bezels and body-colour surround.

Ten new standard and optional wheel designs, from 17 to 20-inch diameter and including beadlock-capable wheels for the Xtreme 35 Package, freshen Wrangler’s rolling stock with tyre sizes ranging from 32 to 35 inches.  

Multiple open-air freedom options include a new standard premium soft-top, two available hardtops (black and body colour), exclusive Sky One-Touch powertop, Sunrider for Hardtop and dual-door group with half doors. This means there are dozens of different door, top and windshield combinations so Wrangler customers can customise their off-road adventure.

Wrangler is also available in 10 eye-catching exterior colours including: Anvil (NEW), Earl, Firecracker Red, Granite Crystal, Silver Zynith, High Velocity, Hydro Blue, Sarge, Bright White and black.

The new Wrangler’s refined interior is loaded with premium features and technology.

Standard on all models is improved hands-free voice recognition on High Altitude, Rubicon X and Rubicon 392. A standard premium cabin package adds acoustic front glass, thicker carpet and additional sound-deadening foam in the windshield header, front cowl and B-pillars, all helping to ensure a quieter ride.

An all-new 12.3-inch touchscreen – the most advanced and largest display ever offered on Wrangler – houses the fifth-generation award-winning Uconnect 5 system.
