Ford 2.7-Liter EcoBoost Engine Teardown Reveals Melted Piston

The 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine by Ford is widely used in various vehicles, with the F-150 being the most popular. This engine, featured in a video by ‘I Do Cars’, underwent a teardown that uncovered a melted piston inside the cylinder.

The engine in question was removed from a 2015-2017 F-150, but the reasons for its removal are unknown. Its mileage is also unclear, and it is uncertain if any aftermarket tuning was done to the engine. However, visually, it appears to be completely stock.

The video begins with the engine on a stand, still intact and showing no signs of damage. It still turns over smoothly and exhibits good compression. However, the discovery of an undone electrical connector on one of the spark plug coils raises suspicion. Additionally, it seems that the spark plugs from that cylinder bank had been removed and reinstalled at some point. Nevertheless, all the plugs appear to be factory original, indicating that the engine has likely traveled less than 100,000 miles.

The disassembly continues, with the removal of the wiring harness, intake plenum, and turbochargers. At this point, the connection starts to become clearer as one of the turbos shows small metal flakes in a mesh filter. The oil filter is also cut open, revealing more metal fragments. It becomes evident that a significant failure has occurred within the engine.

Removing the valve covers confirms that the dual overhead camshafts and valvetrain are in good condition, although additional small metal flakes are found in various locations. Furthermore, the removal of the timing chain cover uncovers sparkly metal bits in oily areas at the bottom. However, the components remain undamaged. Finally, the heads are removed, and the first one looks fine, just like the rest of the teardown.

The second head reveals the issue—a melted piston. Although the missing part of the piston is relatively small, it has caused extensive damage. The piston literally melted into the cylinder wall, resulting in damage to the valves and combustion chamber in that cylinder.

It is uncertain if the engine block can be salvaged, and the exact cause of this condition remains unknown. The video does not provide a definitive conclusion, except to say that there are several factors that could lead to a melted piston. Nonetheless, the teardown reveals that Ford’s 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine is generally well-built from a manufacturing standpoint.

It is worth noting that Ford issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) for the 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine during this period. The TSB addresses issues with faulty valves in the heads, which could cause rough running and excessive oil consumption. However, it is unclear if this problem is related to the specific engine failure shown in the video.

Best Jump Starters 2023: A Product Test by Autocar

In a recent product test conducted by Autocar, a comparison was made between modern jump starters that use different battery technologies. The use of lithium and lead-based chemistries was explored, with the latter being heavier but cheaper in general. Additionally, the test examined other features offered by jump starters, such as USB, 12V, and three-pin charging sockets, which are especially useful for camping trips or situations where multiple devices need charging. It is also common for car batteries to go flat, making these features even more crucial.

The power and safety aspects of the jump starters were also taken into consideration. This included checking if they have warnings for wrongful connections, dead shorts, and a low charge on the car battery.

Another important factor considered was how often the jump starter itself needs to be charged. Lead batteries typically need to be charged as frequently as every two months, while some lithium-based cells can go up to six months before requiring a maintenance charge.

Of course, value for money was also an essential aspect of the product test.

Stellantis Planning Seven Affordable Cars on New Platform to Compete with Chinese Rivals

Stellantis is working on four different platforms to accommodate a range of electric cars. These include STLA Small, STLA Medium, and STLA Large, which are designed with unibody architectures and offer various options such as multiple battery packs and front-, rear-, and all-wheel drive configurations. Additionally, there’s STLA Frame, which will serve as the foundation for more rugged body-on-frame trucks and SUVs. Stellantis states that each platform has the capacity to produce up to two million vehicles per year.

While the Citroën e-C3 was recently unveiled, the French automaker announced that this compact and stylish hatchback does not utilize any of the four STLA platforms. Instead, it will be built on a fifth platform specifically designed for Europe, as well as for region-specific models intended for sale in South America and India. Renaud Tourte, the executive overseeing Smart Car, has confirmed that approximately seven cars are currently being developed using this particular platform.

From the archive: on this day in 1928

Compared to today, car designs were simpler and cheaper back in 1928. This led to a wide range of car makers, coachbuilders, and car types and prices at the Olympia. In fact, it was almost overwhelming.

In our guide for readers attending the event, we listed a total of 157 car brands. Yes, you read that right, 157! Today, excluding specialized brands, there are only approximately 60 car brands available on the market.

It’s interesting to note that out of those 157 brands, only about 20 still exist today. It’s amusing to think about how we could have been amazed by Bugatti, Chevrolet, Fiat, and Renault, while growing up with Delaunay-Belleville, Moon, Schneider, and Whippet.

Many companies used to sell cars as bare chassis, which meant there were another 149 firms at the Olympia providing coachbuilding services.

Instead of metal, the Weymann method of using fabric on a wooden frame was becoming more popular among coachbuilders. This method was cheaper, lighter, quieter, and almost as aesthetically pleasing as metal.

Alongside the increasing variety of body types, there was a lot of discussion about using cellulose to improve paint quality and chromium to decorate metal. However, the future popularity of these materials was uncertain at that time.

Any last advice? “Buying the first nice car you see at Olympia is as silly as a man proposing to his first partner at his first dance.” Well, that makes sense. There were also some cautious words about the “young apes,” some of whom were “dangerous,” who called themselves salesmen!

Drag Race: TTS SuperBusa vs. Suzuki Hayabusa In A Double Busa Battle

The TTS SuperBusa has consistently demonstrated its incredible speed against various vehicles. This 372-horsepower supercharged Hayabusa, built by UK supercharger expert TTS Performance, is truly insane. These facts are well-known and accepted in our online community. However, there was one challenge the TTS SuperBusa had yet to face—until now.

In a recent video, Bike World took the TTS SuperBusa and their own Project Hayabusa to their favorite airstrip for a head-to-head battle. For those unfamiliar with the Project Hayabusa, it is a lightly tuned, naturally aspirated Suzuki Hayabusa that many riders consider fast enough for everyday use. This beloved bike has remained largely unchanged over the years, and while there have been some complaints about the lack of updates, they are in the minority.

While it is obvious that the TTS SuperBusa will easily outperform the Project Hayabusa, it does not mean that the stock Hayabusa is slow. However, speed is relative, as demonstrated in the video. In the first race, the TTS SuperBusa effortlessly leaves the regular Hayabusa behind, almost as if the latter is standing still. Upon closer observation, you can see that it is moving, but it certainly doesn’t appear that way.

After some lighthearted laughter and a few more drag races confirming the mind-blowing speed of the 372-horsepower supercharged Hayabusa, they introduce another challenger—the stock Ducati Streetfighter V4 S. Again, this is by no means a slow street bike. Chris Northover mentions that he has achieved a 9-second quarter mile on the Streetfighter in the past, solidifying its status as a fast street-legal machine.

However, even with all three bikes starting from the same line and racing down the strip together, the TTS SuperBusa effortlessly leaves both the regular Hayabusa and the Streetfighter in its wake. In fact, the Hayabusa and the Streetfighter appear to be equally matched in terms of speed, at least in the race shown in the video. Of course, various factors such as the riders’ skills and the quality of their starts can influence the outcome, but overall, they struggle to keep up with the unstoppable SuperBusa.

Akrapovič Introduces New Slip-On System for the Honda CB750 Hornet

Akrapovič, a renowned aftermarket exhaust system manufacturer, has been offering exhaust systems for motorcycles of all kinds for many years. Whether it’s for top-level racing or everyday commuter bikes, it’s likely that Akrapovič has an aftermarket exhaust system available. As we enter 2023 with stricter emissions and noise regulations, the Slovenian brand continues to innovate and set the standard for aftermarket systems in terms of performance and sound quality.

Akrapovič Has A New Slip-On System For The Honda CB750 Hornet

Akrapovič’s latest product offering is a slip-on system designed for the Honda CB750 Hornet. This relatively new motorcycle model has received positive reviews and is considered by some to be the new standard in the middleweight category. The CB750 Hornet focuses on delivering a balanced and powerful riding experience. With the addition of Akrapovič’s slip-on system, the bike gains a sportier look, a slight improvement in performance, and reduced weight.

The new Akrapovič slip-on system for the Honda CB750 Hornet features a carbon fiber muffler outer sleeve that is hand-crafted. The exhaust core is made from high heat stainless steel and comes with a link pipe that bolts directly onto the stock manifold. Additionally, a titanium end cap adds durability and provides a contrasting visual element to the exhaust pipe. The system makes use of the bike’s stock exhaust mounts and includes a matching carbon fiber bracket that mounts to the base of the passenger foot peg assembly.

From a technical standpoint, Akrapovič claims a weight reduction of 45.6 percent compared to the stock system with their slip-on system. The carbon pipe weighs only 1.8 kilograms. Additionally, there are slight power gains, particularly in the mid to high rpm ranges, although these improvements may not be easily noticeable. The manufacturer states an increase of 0.7 horsepower at 5,250 rpm and 0.4 pound-feet of torque at 5,300 rpm.

Akrapovič Has A New Slip-On System For The Honda CB750 Hornet

Last but not least, Akrapovič’s new system for the CB750 Hornet is fully compliant with Euro 5 standards and has received EC and ECE type-approval. This means that the exhaust system meets the latest emissions and noise regulations in Europe and is likely to comply with regulations in other regions as well. Additionally, the installation process is smooth and seamless, requiring no ECU tuning or remapping.

As of now, official pricing for the Akrapovič slip-on system has not been announced. Prices will vary by region. For more information, visit Akrapovič’s official website or contact a local retailer for details.

How The New MINI Interior Combines Technology and Vintage Appeal

The latest MINI update offers a wide range of customization options that complement the features of the new interior. Users now have the ability to choose from various “experience modes,” which not only change the background and color schemes of the OLED display, but also adjust the LED lighting to match the selected mode. However, this update goes beyond simple aesthetic changes.

There’s now a “personal” mode that allows users to upload a display photo and design their profile based on that image. The display will automatically extract the main colors from the uploaded photo and use them to create the overall theme. This means you can showcase your kids, pets, or even Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as the central focus of your vehicle without needing any tools or equipment.

MINI has also introduced unique “sound profiles” for each display mode. When switching between the core, go-kart, timeless, and balance driving modes, you can expect to hear different sounds that correspond to each mode. This MINI Sound DNA concept also extends to the experience modes, with each mode featuring a distinct jingle. While this may not be as groundbreaking as the release of a new performance mode, BMW emphasizes the importance of these small touches in creating a unique driving atmosphere, which is an integral part of the MINI experience.

Base Porsche 911 Still Plenty Fast In Autobahn Top Speed Run, Hits 194 MPH

Porsche offers the 911 in various models, but sticking to the basic Carrera with rear-wheel drive is a safe bet. Despite being the entry-level variant, it can easily outpace most cars on the Autobahn. A recent video showcases the base 911 being pushed to its limits, reaching its top speed.

Porsche has its own definition of what an entry-level version means, so even the rear-wheel-drive Carrera provides exhilarating acceleration when fully throttled. It can go from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4.2 seconds (or 4.0 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package). At its maximum speed, it reaches 182 mph (293 km/h), although the digital speedometer in the video displays a slightly higher velocity.
