The Potential With Dodge’s New “Multi-Energy” Platform”

Throughout the Charger’s historical past up till at the moment, there hasn’t been some other model of the Charger apart from an inner combustion engine-powered mannequin, which dates again to 1966. Despite going via a complete of seven generations with hybrid and electrical automobiles changing into an increasing number of distinguished, Dodge remained agency in delivering gas-powered-only muscle automobiles.

Despite the flagship 2024 Charger being the all-electric Daytona, the utterly redesigned muscle automotive will probably be constructed on what Dodge’s model boss Tim Kuniskis calls a “multi-energy platform”. This new platform from the Detroit-based model has the potential to take the Charger to all-new heights, setting the usual for years to come back.

The gas-powered fashions will characteristic the new Stellanis’ inline-six Hurricane engine. As effectively as the joy of the gas-powered Charger making a return, it units the stage for one more model of the Charger to be launched, a plug-in hybrid. It undoubtedly will not come as a shock if Dodge extracts as a lot potential from the Charger’s new platform, with the mannequin carrying the muscle automotive banner alone, with Kuniskis having no short-term plans for the equally iconic Challenger nameplate.

Embracing Electrification

Compared to different producers, Dodge in addition to different Stellanis-owned manufacturers have taken extra time to adapt to the business shifting to electrical energy, as a result of threat of shedding prospects with the potential steep worth will increase for his or her fashions. In latest years, gentle hybrid methods have been rolled out in automobiles such because the Ram 1500 pickup truck, however the know-how by no means managed to seek out its means into the high-performance muscle automobiles over at Dodge.

The Benefits Of A PHEV Charger

2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Front Side 2

Now that plug-in hybrid automobiles have gotten more and more common selections for consumers throughout the globe, the advantages that this kind of hybrid system can carry are clear. The most evident profit is the improved gasoline financial system in comparison with gas-powered automobiles, resulting in a way more inexpensive choice in the long term. However, when combined with the performance of the 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six, the potential that PHEV will get all of the extra attractive.

Becoming One Of The Most Powerful Chargers In History

2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Side Profile Smoke 1

The uncooked energy of the V-8s which have been below the hoods of the Chargers to date is a key purpose as to why the mannequin is cherished by so many. While the gas-powered 2025 Chargers will probably be fitted with on of two variants of the inline-six Hurricane engine that produces 550 horsepower at the moment, combining PHEV know-how with the Hurricane engine champions doubtlessly extraordinary energy.

Despite the inline-six Hurricane engine not having been hybridized, the ZF eight-speed computerized transmission current on the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and the Cherokee 4xe is claimed to be available to hyperlink up with the Hurricane engine. These two fashions are actually the best-selling PHEV models on the US market, which is certain to encourage these over at Dodge.

While this mixture has the potential to supply as much as a staggering 700 horsepower, a PHEV Dodge Charger most probably would not be essentially the most highly effective new variant. That honor is anticipated to be given to the Charger Daytona Banshee, an all-electric mannequin designed to harness all of the capabilities of Dodge’s new electrical motors on an 800-volt system. To evaluate, the 2024 electrical Daytona fashions (utilizing a 400-volt system) will produce 496 horsepower for the R/T model, and 670 horsepower via their two electrical motors.

Updating The Charger For Efficiency And Practicality

As effectively as providing traditional Charger energy, a PHEV variant opens the door for the Charger to be much more sensible and usable than ever earlier than. With the huge V-8s, fashionable Chargers devour their fair proportion of fuel, although not essentially an extortionate quantity contemplating the automotive’s dimension. However, having hybrid know-how available has to means to chop prices, even with a smaller inline-six offering the fuel energy.

Having the power to run solely on electrical energy for shorter journeys and in city environments may even introduce a degree of practicality and effectivity to the Charger, with out sacrificing any of the ability that so many want from the Charger nameplate.

With many nonetheless hesitant to make the full jump over from a combustion engine to an EV, a PHEV is the right center floor for consumers to be launched to the advantages of hybrid know-how whereas holding onto the thrilling efficiency that gas-powered Chargers have offered for thus a few years.

PHEV Success Elsewhere In The Industry

Although the vast majority of the best-selling plug-in hybrids are discovered within the SUV or sedan class, a couple of producers have utilized the know-how to their efficiency automobiles. The end result has been the manufacturing of a number of the strongest and excessive highway automobiles ever made. One of essentially the most notable plug-in hybrid achievements is the Ferrari SF90, which manages to supply 986 horsepower with its 4.0-liter V-8 and three electrical motors mixed.

Despite a Dodge Charger PHEV greater than doubtless being designed with a special philosophy, the staggering advantages of the extra electrical energy for automobiles just like the SF90 trace in direction of the potential it might present to a muscle automotive. In the early 2010s particularly, by way of know-how, muscle automobiles weren’t far behind the sports activities/supercars of Europe however have been beginning to fall behind with the rise of EVs. Dodge now has the chance to carry the muscle phase proper again to the highest of the business for pioneering generational efficiency, in a means solely muscle automobiles can.

Considering that Dodge hasn’t unveiled any official plans to supply a plug-in hybrid variant of the revamped Charger, it is protected to say that the potential mannequin will not be seen till 2026 on the earliest. There was a good quantity of debate about whether or not the essence of the Charger can be retained after transitioning to all-electric energy. But now Dodge has introduced that two gas-powered variants are on the best way, this worry has been settled for essentially the most half.

However, by combining both gas and electric power, a PHEV has the potential to enchantment to the widest market potential. Not solely contemplating the rise in recognition of PHEVs within the States, which Dodge’s sister firm in Jeep presently spearheads, it will possibly introduce an array of electrified advantages to the combustion engine lovers who do not wish to lose the legendary spirit of the Charger.

A PHEV variant additionally additional takes the Charger to new territory, being the first-ever plug-in hybrid muscle in addition to the primary fully-electric mannequin within the phase. With opponents equivalent to Ford sticking with the V-8 within the ’24 Mustang and Chevrolet ending manufacturing of the Camaro, Dodge has the potential to actually stand head above shoulders with a Charger outfitted for each efficiency and effectivity.

SEMA is a powerhouse of both engineering and design. The two come together in a wonderful way to give us some of the most impressive aftermarket-built vehicles ever. The overarching theme throughout SEMA is power, glitz, and being as bold as possible. It isn’t until you take a deeper look into the show that you find the true gems. Obsession R’s Nissan Skyline GTR is a project that speaks to those genuinely interested in R32 ownership. A very common problem with R32 generation cars is their interiors tend to fall apart.

Obsession R aims to remedy that problem by offering a nearly complete interior replacement kit for R32s. Trim pieces, seat material, plastics, and more are available through the aftermarket company that makes the car look, well, back to factory finish. This particular car sported Obsession R’s full interior kit, along with a tasteful blue-on-bronze paint/wheel combination. The company also offers performance upgrades.

SEMA wouldn’t be the same without the sea of lifted trucks/SUVs showing off extreme lifts, custom fabrication, and sometimes, some clever solutions to high-riding life complications. Take a walk outside the Las Vegas Convention Center, and you’ll find the majority of lifted vehicles parked all around the property.

It wasn’t until the last day of the show that we stumbled upon what can only be described as, “the final boss of SEMA.” This Ford F-Series pickup was raised seemingly 10 feet tall, on air suspension, and was equipped with a train horn as if its appearance wasn’t bold enough. This vehicle was so tall that it made the other massively large, lifted trucks seem like toys in comparison.

It’s not enough that the R44 and support teams were able to retrieve a European market-only BMW M3 Touring and bring it Stateside. The team went ahead and converted the S58 twin-turbo engine into a single-turbo monster of a wagon that also solves one of the S58’s shortcomings.

That would be the sound. A few examples of this modification have proven that, with the right exhaust and one less turbocharger, the S58 can create the aural sound many BMW enthusiasts are longing for.

Blue Modified Chevrolet Silverado ZR2
Garret Donahue

The K5 Blazer has garnered something of a cult following. There have been restoration companies dedicated to bringing back such vehicles using vintage trucks. Flat Out Autos is not that. Instead, they purchase brand-new trucks from GM and convert them into the K5 of today. Appropriately named, “KR2”, the modified vehicle starts as a Silverado long bed, short cab, and is then chopped after the cab.

To achieve the right proportions and retain as much original hardware as possible, while accounting for aspects such as aero, we’re told this is the best way to achieve the KR2’s signature K5 styling. Using modern ZR2 body panels, the KR2 takes the shape of a modern Blazer. From there, the options are endless, from custom interior colors to a supercharged engine. Fox Race suspension to a myriad of aftermarket wheels and tires, you name it, and Flat Out will add it.

Build Highlights:

  • Supercharged V-8 engine
  • Widebody fiberglass panels
  • Fox suspension
  • Takes the best attributes of a ZR2 and applies them to a two-door, short-wheelbase truck

Complete with a Carbahn 4.6-liter “stroked” S65 V-8 that makes 516 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, eclipsing even the mighty M5 of the era. BBS wheels, a BMW aftermarket wheel of choice, and up to 60 pounds of weight loss make the Pit + Paddock M3 as true to the GTS formula as possible.

  • GTS orange paint
  • Weight removed from the vehicle
  • Over 100 horsepower added to normal M3 engine
  • Wagon converted to M3, a car that never existed

Toyota Spellbinds The Crowd With Special SEMA Builds

Tacoma X-Runner Concept

Built exclusively for SEMA by Toyota’s Calty Research Inc., the Tacoma X-Runner Concept build is a striking homage to the original X-Runner. The concept is a slammed Tacoma with a handful of modifications to make it a performance-focused street truck. The build is reminiscent of the performance trucks from the ’90s and 2000s that we all wish would make a comeback.

The X-Runner Concept truck features the Tundra’s twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine, which produces 421 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Another thing the concept gained from the Tundra is its solid axle with a 4.30:1 final drive ratio and an electronically locking differential to split torque to the rear torque.

FJ Bruiser

A badass “King Of The Hammers” inspired rock-crawler built with a 1966 Land Cruiser FJ45 pick-up truck as the base. The only indication that this truck started out as FJ is the vintage body painted in gorgeous turquoise green. The body has been reinforced with a custom tube chassis and roll cage and then placed on massive 42-inch BF Goodrich Krawler T/A KX tires mounted on 20-inch Method Beadlock wheels.

The team also added a trailing arm suspension with Fox shock absorbers and Eibach springs. Under the hood of this hulking behemoth is a modified Nascar engine that produces 725 horsepower, which is mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. One of the coolest things about the Bruiser is the tank-like tread under the truck, which can be used to get you out of sticky situations. All in all, the FJ Bruiser lives up to its name.

FJ Retro Cruiser

To commemorate the return of the Land Cruiser for the year 2024, Toyota brought out one of their most famous builds ever – the Retro Cruiser. Built on the request of legendary rally driver Rod Millen 25 years ago, the Retro Cruiser was built with a 67’ FJ Cruiser Wagon body with a luxurious interior and enhanced ride comfort. This was achieved by designing a bespoke independent rear suspension system equipped with a coil-over spring/shock assembly.

To accommodate the new suspension system, the team narrowed the stock differential and retained the original brakes and hubs, while also crafting custom uprights. The Retro Cruiser currently rides on unique 17-inch billet wheels fitted with sturdy 35-inch General Tire Grabbers. Additionally, custom skid plates were added underneath, providing an extra layer of protection for off-road adventures.

Lexus GX460 Premium For SEMA 2023

The company also brings a previous-gen GX 460 Premium AAP Build in an eye-catching Matte Yellow Saffron body wrap. This SUV has 34-inch Open Country A/T tires mounting to 18-inch wheels. For protection while off-roading, there are rock sliders and a front skid plate.

When you reach your destination in this rig, there’s a 10-foot double hammock and a mounting stand. A 63-quart weatherproof fridge/freezer fits in the rear cargo area and has a mount to keep it secure. A 12-volt portable air compressor and recovery kit are also part of the extra equipment.

The 2024 Lexus GX inaugurated a new generation of the SUV. It features a boxy, more rugged look than the previous version and now rides on the body-on-frame GA-F platform. There’s a standard full-time four-wheel-drive system and a lockable Torsen limited-slip center differential. The Overtrail versions also get a locking rear differential. While the one at SEMA is just a concept, the production-spec vehicle goes on sale in early 2024, and no pricing is available yet.

Toyota’s New TRD Package For The Tundra Gives It More Power

The 2023 SEMA Show is packed with custom cars and prototypes from automakers that you can’t buy, unless you want to get individual parts and make your own. Toyota has some of that with concepts like the new X-Runner and FJ Bruiser, but there’s also a truck you can buy straight from the automaker. Say hello to the 2024 Tundra equipped with an optional TRD Performance Package.

What does one get with this $3,400 option? Toyota adds special TRD badging, a snazzy exhaust tip, and 32 extra horses under the hood. That’s accomplished mechanically with upgraded dual intakes and a new exhaust, both of which provide better airflow. A new engine tune optimizes the changes, though you’ll need to run premium fuel as a result. Toyota also tweaks the throttle for “a sporty and powerful driving feel.”

The result is 421 horsepower using the standard twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter i-Force engine. Torque remains the same at 479 pound-feet, but peak twist hits 400 RPM sooner. The i-Force Max engine rises to 469 hp, a notable figure as it surpasses all trucks in the US save for the bonkers Ram 1500 TRX and Ford F-150 Raptor R. And it’s not a dealer-installed setup – Toyota offers it from the factory with a full standard vehicle warranty.

“We wanted to build on the excitement of the new Tundra platform and the twin-turbo engine – which already makes monster horsepower and torque – to develop this performance package,” said Jakin Wilson, senior engineering manager for Toyota Motor North America.

A Legendary Land Cruiser Concept Returns Toyota’s Booth at SEMA

The Retro Cruiser Gets Freshened Up to Return to SEMA in Style…24 Years Later

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 31, 2023) – The Toyota Land Cruiser has a long history of over seven decades. It is a legendary SUV that has gained an international following and a large fan base around the world. The Land Cruiser is known for its ability to go anywhere and do anything.

To celebrate the Land Cruiser’s return to North America in 2024, Toyota is showcasing a famous custom Land Cruiser at SEMA: the Rod Millen Group’s 1967 FJ45 Land Cruiser Wagon, known as The Retro Cruiser.

The Retro Cruiser, which will be on display at Toyota’s booth at SEMA from Oct. 31–Nov. 3, is not just a show car concept. It was inspired by a conversation in 1999 between senior managers at Toyota Motor Sales and racing legend Rod Millen. The idea was to showcase the latest Land Cruiser technology while paying tribute to its rich heritage.

Marty Schwerter, Toyota Motorsports garage team manager, who led the team responsible for getting the Retro Cruiser ready for SEMA, said, “Not only is it a cool truck, but it’s also extremely well-built. They made this concept to be used in the dirt, with all the rugged looks of the old ’67 FJ style but with the luxury of the 100 Series, which was the ultimate Toyota comfort car in the early 2000s.”

The Retro Cruiser started as a $5,000 vehicle that needed some work. The team stretched the frame by 10 inches and made several modifications to the body to give it a more muscular appearance and enhance its performance. One of the most notable features of the Retro Cruiser is its suspension system.

The team wanted to incorporate as many production Land Cruiser components as possible, but they decided to improve the ride comfort by custom-building an independent rear suspension with coil-over spring/shock assemblies. They also widened the front track by 4 inches, resulting in a 30% increase in wheel travel. The team narrowed the stock differential, kept the original brakes and hubs, and created custom uprights, which allowed for an impressive 12 inches of rear-wheel travel. The Retro Cruiser rides on bespoke, 17-inch billet wheels with rugged, 35-inch General Tire Grabbers. Custom skid plates were added underneath for extra protection.

The Retro Cruiser received a power boost from a 100 Series Land Cruiser’s robust 230-horsepower, 4.7L, 32-valve DOHC V-8 engine, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, transfer case, and locking differentials. It also features a custom-designed Borla stainless steel exhaust for a more aggressive sound.

Despite its rugged exterior, the Retro Cruiser has a luxurious interior with contemporary Land Cruiser components and upgraded surfaces, including Connolly leather. In addition to the standard power accessories, it comes equipped with a satellite phone, navigation system, and a 15-gallon onboard water supply, highlighting its versatility and readiness for extended adventures. The vehicle also has a complete interior roll cage to increase its structural rigidity.

In preparation for this year’s SEMA Show, the Toyota team went through the FJ45 and replaced worn-out parts and aged components. They fixed leaking shocks, replaced rotted hoses, revived the fuel system, and addressed old fitment issues. The vehicle was then taken to Complete Customs, where the exterior was refreshed. It was stripped down to bare metal and repainted in the original color, restoring it to its 1999 appearance.

Mike Tripp, group vice president of Toyota Marketing, said, “For 2024, Land Cruiser will honor its heritage of being able to go anywhere on the planet but will get back to its roots, offering accessibility to an even broader spectrum of customers eager to explore the backcountry. Vehicles like the Retro Cruiser are a testament to Land Cruiser’s iconic status as our longest-running nameplate. By showing it at SEMA, we hope to inspire an entirely new generation of Land Cruiser lovers.”

The Retro Cruiser, created by Rod Millen, is one of 19 accessorized vehicles, builds, and concepts featured by Toyota at SEMA this year. Toyota’s product display theme is “Track or Trail, Your Thrill Awaits,” showcasing some of the most exciting on- and off-road performance vehicles ever built. This is Toyota’s largest presence at SEMA to date.

Note: This vehicle is a special project prototype with modified parts and/or accessories not available from Toyota. These modifications may void the vehicle’s warranty, negatively impact performance and safety, and may not be street legal.
