5 Products Apple Should Have Never Discontinued

The iPod, Apple’s iconic portable music player, holds a significant place in the company’s history. Unfortunately, Apple announced in 2022 that it was discontinued. The iPod lineup underwent various transformations, starting from the pocket-sized iPod Classic with a click wheel, and concluding with the iPod Touch.

The rise of smartphones — particularly the iPhone, with its enhanced functionalities and integrated music capabilities — contributed to the decline in demand for standalone portable music players like the iPod. Despite its discontinuation, there are compelling reasons why the iPod should have stuck around.

It provided a dedicated music experience that catered specifically to music enthusiasts. Its iconic design, featuring the click wheel and sleek aesthetics, made it a highly desirable and user-friendly device. The iPod allowed users to carry thousands of songs in a compact device, providing unparalleled freedom and convenience. It really did revolutionize music portability and consumption, setting the stage for the digital music era — but many would want it back just for the looks and design.

Besides allowing users to carry extensive music libraries with them, the iPod’s significant storage capacity appealed to individuals who preferred to own their music, as well as provided offline access to their favorite tracks during a time when smartphones weren’t as prevalent. Integrating music functionalities into data-powered smartphones, and the rise of music streaming services, may have rendered large storage capacities less relevant for some users. However, the iPod remained valuable for some audiophiles, especially for others in areas with limited internet access.

duPont REGISTRY No. 459 – August 2023

McLaren may not be dominating Formula 1 right now, but its automotive division consistently earns a place on the podium for its road cars. And while the brand has produced some truly insane cars in its Ultimate Series, it’s the 720S from the “lesser” Super Series that has grabbed more headlines.

Perhaps it’s because the 720S is more affordable and available compared to McLaren’s other models like the Senna or Speedtail. Or maybe it’s because the 720S has gained popularity through videos on YouTube, showcasing it embarrassing every car in quarter-mile drag races.

Introducing the cover car of this issue: the new 750S. McLaren recently unveiled this successor to the 720S, and it offers even more improvements. With an additional 30 horsepower, a weight reduction of 66 pounds, a shorter final drive ratio in its upgraded 7-speed sequential gearbox, a wider track, larger air intakes, and a quicker steering ratio, the new 750S surpasses its predecessor as a remarkable supercar.

Reportedly, the 750S will be the last McLaren car solely powered by an internal combustion engine. While electric propulsion is the future, McLaren deserves credit for not abandoning traditional engines without a fight. The upgrades in the 750S ensure that McLaren will still outpace a Tesla in drag races.

This month’s issue of duPont REGISTRY also features two other supercars you don’t want to miss. The first is a review of the incredibly innovative yet nostalgic Ferrari 296 GTB on page 30. This Ferrari is the first to feature a V6 engine in nearly 50 years. Despite having fewer cylinders compared to its V8-powered stablemates, the 296 GTB surprises with 830 horsepower thanks to some electrification enhancements.

The second supercar feature is about our first experience with the unique McLaren Elva. You can read about it on page 48. As mentioned earlier, McLaren’s Ultimate Series has produced extraordinary cars like the F1 and P1, and the Elva is the latest and most intriguing addition to this group. This open-top supercar does not have a windshield, although there is an option to add a fixed windscreen (which we do not recommend). The Elva is rare, fast, and expensive, making it the epitome of our car preferences.

If size were the main indicator of automotive greatness, the LOKI Coach would be on top. Turn to page 42 to learn about the most impressive and luxurious motorcoach built on the renowned Prevost chassis. If you want to travel in true luxury, the LOKI Coach offers a sleek exterior, modern interior, and significant advancements in power management, renewable energy, and automation. Our advice? Make space for this exceptional vehicle by clearing your guest house and creating a concrete pad for parking it.

There’s much more to discover in this month’s issue (pro-tip: check out our feature on adventure watches on page 70). It’s the kind of issue that you won’t want to put down, as your next car could be waiting for you within its pages. Now go find it.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Turns 8 Years Old

In June 2015, Alfa Romeo unveiled the production version of the highly anticipated Giulia. This event marked the start of Alfa Romeo’s plans to reestablish itself as a leading automobile brand. The Giulia was created by a team of talented engineers, designers, and stylists and was the first of eight new models planned for the next three years. However, the only other notable vehicle to follow was the Stelvio in 2017.

Motor1 Numbers Alfa Romeo Giulia

Since its introduction in 2016, the Alfa Romeo Giulia has sold approximately 160,000 units in Europe, North America, and certain countries in Asia and the Middle East. Although it did not achieve its ambitious sales targets, the Giulia proved to be a highly competitive sedan.

The Giulia also played a crucial role in Alfa Romeo’s expansion into the North American automotive market. Despite launching a sedan at a time when demand for sedans was declining, Alfa Romeo managed to make an impact in the market.

And Now?

Many people are wondering whether there will be a successor to the Giulia and how quickly Alfa Romeo will continue to expand its lineup. With the decreasing demand for sedans worldwide (except in China), it is unlikely that a new Giulia will maintain the same style as the current model.

Last year, global sales of premium D-segment sedans decreased by 2 percent, with China being the exception with a 5 percent increase. In the US and Canada, sales increased by 1 percent, while in Europe, the third-largest market, sales decreased by 25 percent.

Motor1 Numbers Alfa Romeo Giulia

It appears that Alfa Romeo is shifting its focus towards SUVs and crossovers. After the introduction of the Tonale in the second half of 2022, the company plans to launch a smaller SUV to compete with models like the Mini Countryman and Volkswagen T-Roc. SUVs in this size category have proven to be successful for the brand, as the Tonale accounted for 67 percent of Alfa Romeo’s new registrations in Europe between January and May of this year.

The Lessons Learned

The Alfa Romeo Giulia is a fantastic product that showcased cutting-edge engines and a modern platform upon its release. Its eye-catching design stayed true to the brand’s identity without being excessive. Despite its modest commercial success, the Giulia proved to be a strong contender against German sedans.

Motor1 Numbers Alfa Romeo Giulia

The Giulia’s underwhelming sales can be seen as an initial test for Alfa Romeo, highlighting the changing preferences of customers in the premium segment. However, it is expected that Alfa Romeo will continue to offer a successor to the Giulia, possibly in a different format.

Gernot Döllner appointed as the new CEO of AUDI in Volkswagen’s Group Board of Management

Gernot Döllner will become the new CEO of AUDI AG and will join Volkswagen AG’s Group Board of Management on September 1, 2023. He will be taking over from Markus Duesmann, who will step down from Group management at the same time. This decision was made by the Group Supervisory Board today.

The Chairman of Volkswagen’s Supervisory Board, Hans Dieter Pötsch, expressed gratitude towards Markus Duesmann for his contributions at Audi. Duesmann played a pivotal role in implementing an ambitious electrification strategy, achieving a significant milestone with the E-Roadmap, and leading the way for a complete transition to e-mobility. Pötsch also emphasized that Gernot Döllner, with his extensive experience within the Group and its products, will effectively advance and develop Audi’s strategy.

Gernot Döllner, who hails from Lower Saxony, studied mechanical engineering and joined Volkswagen as a doctoral student in 1993. He held various managerial positions at Porsche AG, including head of Concept Development and head of the Panamera series. Döllner has been responsible for Product and Group Strategy, as well as the General Secretariat in the Volkswagen Group since 2021.

You Can Use ChatGPT As A Language Translator (But Here’s Why You Might Not Want To)

Google Translate offers a user-friendly interface for translating text. However, ChatGPT can also function as a translation tool, albeit with a different approach. While it lacks dedicated language selection boxes, it is still a sophisticated option. Users can provide additional information in the text boxes to specify the desired translation perspective or context.

Make Use Of suggests that by adding phrases like “Translate [text to translate] to English from the perspective of someone discussing the COVID-19 pandemic,” the translation can be tailored accordingly. This contextual information helps ChatGPT use the most appropriate words in the translated output, enhancing the accuracy beyond a literal translation.

By providing such details to ChatGPT, users can potentially overcome challenges like gendered forms in languages such as French. However, there are several factors to consider, and ChatGPT may not always be the optimal choice for translation purposes.

Pontiac Firebird And Trans Am Barnfind Holds Amazing Muscle Cars

Welcome to a place where Pontiac Firebirds and Trans Ams find their final resting place. Located in Iowa judging by the license plates on some of the cars, this incredible location is filled with abandoned muscle cars.

In a video without voiceover, viewers can enjoy the sound of nature while witnessing numerous Firebirds and Trans Ams. The clip begins with the cinematographer walking through a row of cars, ranging from decent condition to mere shells.

The collector who assembled this collection appears to have a preference for second-generation Firebirds. While other iterations are present, they are not as abundant.

The barns house the rare cars. For instance, there are two Turbo Trans Ams parked side by side. These models were exclusively available in 1980 and ’81.

In another building, there is a Super Duty 455. Produced in 1973 and ’74, these models came with a 455-cubic-inch (7.5-liter) V8 engine that was more powerful than other versions offered by Pontiac. With an impressive output of 290 horsepower, these cars were ahead of their time.

To recap, the second-generation Firebird and Trans Am were in production from 1970 to 1981. While they shared underpinnings with the Chevrolet Camaro, they had unique styling and engine options. The Trans Am was the high-performance variant and gained fame through its appearance in the movie “Smokey and the Bandit” in 1977.

In addition to the cars, this collection also contains every Firebird or Trans Am part imaginable. Complete engines are scattered throughout the location, and there are stacks of wheels as far as the eye can see. Inside the main garage, there are neatly organized pallets with engine cylinder heads, intakes, and transmissions.

The collector’s interests also extend beyond Pontiacs. The main garage is home to a mid-1950s Ford, a late ’50s Mercury, and a classic hot rod. The collection even includes a Triumph Spitfire, one of the few non-American cars in the mix.

VW Explores Unique Versions of the Bulli, Including a Bus with Tracks

The Volkswagen Bus holds a significant place in the history of the company. It gained immense popularity and became an iconic vehicle for millions of people. In a new video, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ vintage division in Germany takes us on a journey through the model’s legacy. The video showcases some of the noteworthy models produced by the company.

One of the most fascinating VW Bulli variants featured in the video is a special 1968 T1 Kombi. This particular vehicle was equipped with half-tracks, making it truly unique. When it arrived at the facility, it was disassembled and came in three or four separate boxes containing individual parts. In the late 1960s and 1970s, the bus underwent a conversion that added two extra axles, with tracks wrapped around the rear two. This transformed the bus into a formidable off-road monster, primarily used in mountainous regions of Austria. It’s important to note that only the rear axle is powered, while the front two axles are used for steering.
