What’s on offer?

Maruti Invicto Interior

The Maruti Invicto shares its premium features with the Toyota Innova Hycross. These include dual-zone climate control, memory settings for the power-adjustable driver’s seat, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, panoramic sunroof, semi-digital instrument cluster with a 7-inch TFT MID, ventilated front seats, and leather upholstery. However, it does miss out on the JBL sound system and powered second-row Ottoman seats found in the Hycross. The interior layout remains the same, but the theme changes from chestnut brown to black.

Enhanced safety

Maruti Invicto Safety

The Maruti Invicto offers enhanced safety features such as 6 airbags, ISOFIX anchorages, front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree camera, hill start assist, and vehicle stability control. However, it does not include the ADAS feature available in the Innova Hycross.

New hybrid powertrain

Maruti Invicto Hybrid Powertrain

The Maruti Invicto is equipped with a 2-litre strong hybrid powertrain, which is a first for Maruti. It has a combined output of 186PS and 206Nm from the petrol engine and electric motor. The hybrid powertrain is paired with an e-CVT automatic transmission. The Invicto claims an impressive fuel economy of 23.24kmpl.

Unlike the Innova Hycross, the non-electrified 2-litre petrol engine option is not available for the Invicto.

Rivals

The Maruti Invicto currently has no direct rivals, similar to the Toyota Innova throughout its generations. It serves as a premium alternative to the Kia Carens and competes with three-row SUVs such as the Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV700, and Hyundai Alcazar. The only real competition for the Maruti MPV is its sibling, the Innova Hycross.

What to Expect from Maruti Invicto, Launching Tomorrow

The Maruti Invicto, based on the Toyota Innova Hycross, will become the flagship offering from the Indian automaker.

Maruti Invicto Teaser

  • The price is estimated to be Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Maruti Invicto is ready to enter the premium three-row MPV segment in India. Bookings have already started with a token amount of Rs 25,000. Let’s take a quick look at what we can expect from this new MPV from Maruti.

Similar to the Hycross

Maruti Invicto Teaser

The Invicto is based on the Toyota Innova Hycross, another product from their global partnership. Based on the spy shots and teasers, the Maruti MPV will closely resemble Toyota’s MPV, with some minor design changes at the front and rear. Maruti has already revealed the split chrome grille on the front of the Invicto in an official teaser.

Inside, the Invicto will have the same dashboard layout as the Toyota MPV but with a different dark shade upholstery instead of the brown upholstery in the Hycross.

Loaded with Premium Features

Toyota Innova Hycross Interior

Similar to the Hycross, the Invicto will have a wide range of features, many of which will be introduced for the first time by Maruti. These amenities include a panoramic sunroof, digital driver’s display, dual-zone AC, ventilated front seats, and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Safety will be ensured with six airbags, a 360-degree camera, a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) features like lane-keep and departure assist, adaptive cruise control, and auto-emergency braking.

New Strong-Hybrid Powertrain

Toyota Innova Hycross

The Invicto is expected to feature the Hycross’s strong-hybrid powertrain, which is the first of its kind from Maruti. This powertrain includes a new 2-litre petrol engine not seen in any other Maruti model. The Toyota petrol-hybrid delivers a combined output of 186PS and 206Nm of torque, paired with an e-CVT automatic transmission.

Expected Price and Competitors

Since the Maruti Invicto is likely to be offered in a single fully loaded variant at launch, it could be priced around Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom). It will directly compete with the Toyota Innova Hycross while providing a premium alternative to the Kia Carens.

New Maruti Invicto Teaser Shows Off Its Panoramic Sunroof Ahead Of July 5 Launch

# New Maruti Invicto Teaser Shows Off Its Panoramic Sunroof Ahead Of July 5 Launch

The upcoming Maruti Invicto MPV is set to launch on July 5, and a new teaser image has confirmed the presence of a panoramic sunroof. Based on the Toyota Innova Hycross, the Invicto will come with several premium features, including a 10-inch touchscreen system, dual-zone air conditioning, wireless charging, leatherette seats, and LED headlamps.

The teaser also gives us a glimpse of the second-row seating, which will be available in both seven- and eight-seater configurations with captain seats in the former. The interior of the Invicto looks similar to the Hycross but with a different interior theme shade.

In terms of safety, the Invicto will be the first Maruti car to come with radar-based Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). It will also have six airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), hill hold control, a 360-degree camera, and other safety features.

Under the hood, the Invicto is expected to be powered by the same 2-liter petrol-hybrid engine found in the Hycross. This engine produces 186PS of power and claims a fuel efficiency of up to 23.24kmpl. It will be mated to a single-speed e-CVT transmission.

The Maruti Invicto is positioned as a premium MPV and is expected to have a price tag exceeding Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom). It will compete with models like the Kia Carens in the MPV segment.

Did The Maruti Jimny Prices Miss Their Mark?

Maruti shocked us when it announced that the Jimny is priced from Rs 12.74 lakh (ex-showroom)

 Jimny off-roading

The Maruti Jimny has been one of the most highly anticipated SUVs for India since it was first confirmed for the market years ago. While the fourth generation of the three-door Jimny globally premiered in 2018, Maruti insisted on only bringing us an extended five-door version and made us wait five years for it. After all that, the country’s largest carmaker finally launched the lifestyle SUV this June and a lot of the public’s response on the interweb was far from welcoming. The problem? Its prices.

How high are the prices?

Maruti Jimny

The five-door Jimny has entered the market with prices ranging from Rs 12.74 lakh to Rs 15.05 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). For a subcompact SUV that can only seat four and has a decent but not expansive boot capacity, those prices are certainly eye-watering. Even though Maruti stretched it out and added rear doors, the rear passenger space and overall practicality in the Jimny is less than that offered by typical subcompact offerings like the Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Tata Nexon. Most of those models are priced between Rs 8 lakh to Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom).

But then, it’s not competing against typical small SUVs. The Jimny is a niche offering for lifestyle enthusiasts who want a capable off-roader, not a tech-laden city-suited family car. So, is the pricing still a pain point if compared to an appropriate competitor, like the Mahindra Thar?

Jimny’s Arch Rival

Mahindra Thar ground clearance

The second-gen Mahindra Thar is also a sub-4 metre off-roader and it has dominated the affordable lifestyle SUV space since its launch nearly 3 years ago. Even though it’s a three-door offering with no real boot, buyers directly compare it against the five-door Jimny.

On paper, the Mahindra has these advantages over the Maruti SUV:

  • Entry-level prices are lower by more than Rs 2 lakh.

  • Offers choice of a convertible soft-top (like the Maruti Gypsy)

  • Has more road presence thanks to chunkier proportions

  • Offers more performance with its 2-litre turbo-petrol engine (150PS vs 115PS) and a better automatic transmission (6-speed vs 4-speed)

  • Also gets the choice of diesel powertrains, the popular choice among off-roaders.

  • Assured safety with 4-star rating from Global NCAP crash test

Let’s take a closer look at each of those factors to see if they make it hard for the Jimny to justify its pricing.

Also read: Maruti Jimny Vs Mahindra Thar – Price Check

Why is the Thar so much more affordable?

What the internet is overlooking is that the Thar’s more affordable variants only have a rear-wheel drivetrain. When it comes to the 4WD Thar variants with the petrol engine, the petrol-only Jimny which offers 4WD as standard is more affordable by nearly Rs 1 lakh, and by nearly Rs 2 lakh between the petrol-automatic options.

Then there’s the features list where the Maruti comes with a touchscreen infotainment unit, 6 airbags, a rearview camera, hill descent control and a TFT MID as standard. Its top trim also comes with auto LED headlamps with washer, a larger touchscreen, auto AC and rear power windows, none of which are available on the Mahindra Thar. Furthermore, once 6 airbags become mandatory, the price gap between the two SUVs will increase in favour of the Maruti Jimny.

Does less performance affect its capabilities?

Yes, the Jimny may seem underpowered in comparison and the Thar certainly offers punchier performance but the smaller engine is sufficient since its body is much lighter than that of the Thar. Fun fact: A Jimny loaded with 4 occupants is still lighter than a Thar unladen!

Maruti Jimny off-roading

This makes it just as capable of conquering difficult terrains and the 4×4 system is also set up for the same. The transmission options may seem dated in comparison to the Thar, but these are proven worldwide and might even be cheaper to service and maintain thanks to Maruti’s scale of business.

It is also worth noting that the Jimny, like the second-gen Thar, is also aimed at city buyers. While fuel economy is not their primary concern, it is a priority nonetheless and the Maruti Suzuki powertrain is more frugal. Furthermore, as the regulations clamp down on emissions and diesel engines in particular, a petrol powertrain is at a lower risk of being affected by such changes.

Jimny on the road

No fun roof option

The current generation of the Jimny never got a soft-top option so it’s not an India-specific omission. However, it is clear that lifestyle vehicle buyers do like such options as even the Jeep Wrangler comes with a removable roof and doors.

While the fixed metal roof does reduce the fun factor, it has advantages over soft tops in terms of body rigidity and overall safety in case the car were to roll over while off-roading.

Is the Jimny safe enough?

The five-door Jimny has debuted in India and is yet to be crash tested by a well-known New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP). However, the three-door Jimny was tested by Euro NCAP where it scored a three-star safety rating (the tested car was also equipped with ADAS tech such as lane-assist and auto-emergency braking).

 Jimny Euro NCAP

While the Thar did score higher in the Global NCAP test, it is worth noting that the testing parameters have changed since then and it may not score as highly anymore. In comparison, the Euro NCAP is much more thorough and factors in a lot more scores than just a frontal-offset and side-impact crash test.

Mahindra Thar Scores A Decent Four Stars In Global NCAP Crash Test

We cannot say with certainty if the Jimny is as safe or safer than the Thar, but it certainly appears to be safer than the average Maruti.

So, is the Maruti Jimny priced fairly?

In our opinion, Maruti could have done better with the prices for the Jimny. Given the six-month-long wait since its unveiling, and with Mahindra introducing the more affordable rear-wheel drive Thar variants, the target consumer was expecting Maruti to flex its market dominance and introduce the Jimny with a more reasonable starting price.

Maruti Jimny front

As far as first impressions go, it was an unpleasant shock that the Maruti SUV arrived with a starting price of nearly Rs 15 lakh (on-road). The off-roader may be better equipped on paper than any competitor, it wasn’t short on compromises either and the biggest issue was that it lacked the physical presence of its more affordable rival.

Also read: Maruti Jimny Variants Explained: Which Variant Should You Buy?

How should Maruti have priced the Jimny?

In our opinion, the Maruti Jimny should have debuted with an introductory price range of Rs 11 lakh to Rs 13.5 lakh (ex-showroom) at least for a limited number of early buyers. Mahindra is adept at this “early-bird”  strategy where it will accumulate a sizable order book for a highly anticipated product at competitively low launch prices for the first ten to fifty thousand buyers, before raising the rates over the next 12 months.

Maruti Jimny badge

Compared to the Thar, the omitted cost of turbocharging, the old transmissions and smaller wheels/tyres should’ve allowed for the Jimny’s prices to be Rs 1.5-2 lakh cheaper.

Will this really affect the success of the Jimny?

If we could accurately predict such a thing, we’d have the ear of every carmaker in the world. It is too early to say if the Jimny’s prices will affect the overall demand and popularity of the SUV, but they will certainly have an initial impact with some of the more budget-restricted buyers changing their plans. At its current price, the Jimny is, no doubt, an indulgence.

Maruti Jimny red

Perhaps, Maruti has played a different strategy altogether which could pan out to its benefit in the long run. By introducing the five-door Jimny at these prices, it will not be hiking the rates by a couple of lakhs in the first year or two, while the Mahindra Thar’s prices are expected to keep rising.

Notes On The Jimny’s Business Case

We also asked our resident review expert, Tushar, to weigh in on the matter as he has spent some time with the Jimny and also had a chance to interact with Maruti’s representatives. Here’s what he had to add to the matter of the Jimny prices:

Maruti Suzuki already expects the Jimny to be a low-volume car. This could’ve motivated a stronger focus on margin-per-car vs more cars sold

Like the 3-door, the 5-door Jimny will also be exported generating more revenue for the Jimny product line

The Jimny’s K15B engine, manual transmission that’s an evolution of the unit used in the Gypsy and 4-speed automatic transmission have saved a lot of money in developmental costs for Suzuki.

The powertrains used in the Thar have been freshly developed at great cost to Mahindra. While they are in use/will be used in multiple products (Thar, upcoming Thar 5-door, XUV700, Scorpio-N), Mahindra has a tighter timeline to get the most profitability out of them, especially considering the increased pressure to shift to electric/electrified powertrains.

Maruti Invicto’s Clearest Images Yet Surface Online Ahead Of Launch

The Maruti Invicto will share its features and powertrain with the Toyota Innova Hycross

Maruti Invicto spied

  • Based on the Innova Hycross, the Maruti Invicto has some visual differences.

  • Maruti is accepting bookings for the MPV for Rs 25,000.

  • New images reveal a revised grille with chrome slabs, tri-piece LED elements in the taillights, and different alloy wheels. The variant badge on the tailgate is missing.

  • The interior of the Maruti Invicto will have a black theme instead of the tan upholstery found in the Toyota MPV.

  • The Maruti Invicto is expected to come with a 2-liter strong-hybrid powertrain.

  • Features that are expected to be included are a 10-inch touchscreen, dual-zone AC, and a 360-degree camera.

We are just 10 days away from the launch of the Maruti Invicto, which is based on the Toyota Innova Hycross. Bookings for the MPV are currently open for Rs 25,000, and the launch is scheduled for July 5. Before the price announcement, the uncamouflaged model of the premium Maruti MPV has been spotted again, providing a clearer look at its design.

Any Visual Changes?

The Maruti MPV, which was spotted in a white shade, shares a similar design to the Innova Hycross, with the main difference being the tweaked grille. The Invicto now features twin chrome slats and a thick chrome underlining. The spotted model seems to be a lower variant of the Invicto as it lacks fog lamps and a panoramic sunroof, which are available on the top-spec Innova Hycross.

Maruti Invicto rear spied

The Invicto also comes with a different set of alloy wheels, while the overall profile remains the same. At the back, the LED taillights feature a tri-piece element, similar to other modern Nexa offerings. Apart from the inclusion of the ‘Invicto’ moniker, the rest of the rear profile remains unchanged. The Invicto also lacks the variant badge that is found on its Toyota sibling.

Differences Inside The Cabin

Maruti Invicto seats

As is typical of Maruti Nexa cars, the Invicto will have an all-black cabin theme (confirmed in one of its latest teasers). We don’t expect any other changes between the interiors of the two MPVs.

Maruti is also expected to include features from the Hycross, such as a dual-zone climate control, a 10-inch touchscreen, a digital driver’s display, and an ottoman function for the second-row captain seats.

In terms of safety, the Invicto is expected to have up to six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera. However, the spied Invicto model does not seem to have ADAS (advanced driver assist systems) like its Toyota counterpart.

Strong-hybrid Only

If reports and dealer sources are correct, the Invicto will only be offered with the 184PS 2-liter strong-hybrid powertrain from the Innova Hycross. It will come with an e-CVT gearbox and offer a claimed mileage of 21.1kmpl.

However, this sighting contradicts an earlier report that stated the Maruti Invicto would be offered as a single fully loaded variant for booking. It is possible that the rebadged MPV will simply rearrange the equipment list from the Toyota MPV to lower its price.

Prices And Rivals

Maruti Invicto teaser

If the Invicto is offered as a hybrid-only model, Maruti is expected to price it starting from Rs 22 lakh (ex-showroom). Its direct competitor will be the Toyota Innova Hycross, while it will be positioned higher than the Maruti XL6 and Kia Carens in the MPV category.
