BMW is set to begin a new era of electric vehicle production in 2025 with the introduction of the Neue Klasse (New Class) architecture. Referred to as the NA5 project, the high-riding EV is anticipated to debut in the summer of 2025 and is expected to be comparable in size to today’s X3. However, it is anticipated to have a larger storage area behind the rear seats and a more spacious cabin, thanks to smarter packaging and longer overhangs.

However, the headlights seen on the prototype are not expected to be the final production units. BMW confirmed last year that the first product based on the Neue Klasse platform will be an electric sedan, followed by the SUV. Production of the electric family hauler is set to commence in July 2025 in Hungary, with some sources claiming it will arrive earlier. According to BMW’s CEO Oliver Zipse, “By the end of the decade, the Neue Klasse is expected to account for more than half of our sales.”

Details about the powertrain options are currently limited. However, rear- and all-wheel-drive versions, as well as various battery packages, are expected. Early reports suggest a range of up to 360 miles on a single charge, depending on the battery capacity.

Within two years of replacing the iX3, BMW will introduce five new electric vehicles. Some of these will be manufactured in Germany, while by the end of the decade, the company’s South Carolina factory will also begin production of Neue Klasse-based models.

A Bold Design

The Exter will be Hyundai’s new entry-level SUV. It has a bold look and features a typical boxy appearance, characterized by chunky wheel arches, body cladding, and roof rails. Other distinctive exterior elements include H-shaped LED DRLs and taillights, large skid plates, and chrome surround for the projector headlights.

Equipment Onboard

Hyundai has revealed some notable features of the Exter, such as a dual-camera dashcam, cruise control, an 8-inch touchscreen, digitized driver display, single-pane sunroof, and wireless phone charging.

The Exter’s safety features include six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), hill assist, 3-point seatbelts, seatbelt reminders for all seats, and a reversing camera.

Powertrains On Offer

Since it is based on the same platform as the Grand i10 Nios, it shares its powertrains with the latter. It is equipped with a 1.2-liter petrol engine (83PS/114Nm) paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or an AMT. The same engine will also be offered with an optional CNG kit, mated to the 5-speed manual transmission only.

Launch, Price And Competition

The Exter will be available for sale on July 10, with prices expected to start from Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom). It will compete with the Tata Punch, Citroen C3, and Maruti Fronx, while also taking on the Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.
