The Tesla Cybertruck’s Range Extender Is An External Battery Pack

After a long wait of four years, people now have access to information on the Tesla Cybertruck that is finally available for purchase. Among the various statistics on Tesla’s website, an interesting observation was made. The maximum range for the electric truck is 340 miles in dual-motor AWD trim, and there is a range extender available that extends it to an estimated 470 miles. This raises the question – does the Cybertruck have a range extender?

Despite the irony of a combustion engine being used as a range extender in a Tesla, the reality is quite different. According to a social media post from Drew Baglino, Tesla’s senior vice president of powertrain and energy, the Cybertruck’s range extender is actually another battery pack. It is the size of a toolbox and can be installed in the bed behind the cab. This accessory will be available to Cybertruck owners, except for the single-motor trim.

 

A simple calculation shows that the range improvement from 340 to 470 miles is 130 miles, similar to the increase seen for the range-topping tri-motor Cyberbeast, which jumps from 320 to 450 miles.

Despite having the range extender option, the production Cybertruck still falls short of the 500-mile promise Elon Musk made back in 2019. It is important to note that full details on all the Cybertruck trims have not been disclosed yet. The single-motor truck won’t be available until 2025, and there are still numerous statistics missing for that model. Although the base version offers a 250-mile range, a long-range single-motor truck could potentially be introduced before then.

The unique inspiration behind the creation of Lotus Evija

While researching for a recent Lotus Elise feature, I came across information about and tests of the 340R, a limited-run, extra-light, Elise-based roadster made by Hethel in 2000.

It received a warm reception, although we were somewhat involved in its development, so it had to be well received, despite being acknowledged as “a very expensive exercise in minimalism.”

I’m not sure if it was as widely adored as the conceptually simpler 2-Eleven of 2007, but it was probably ahead of its time. Special editions of sports cars and supercars have become a common way for niche makers to generate revenue.

But that’s not what I want to discuss this time. What caught my attention was the interior of the Lotus 340R, with its bare spar extending like a bridge across the width, instruments attached to it and a vertical central pillar with functional buttons.

It reminded me of something, and then I looked at pictures of Lotus’s new electric hypercar, the Evija. Twenty years later, there’s a conceptually similar horizontal spar and a vertical pillar housing functions.

Today’s interior is slightly more complex, but today’s production cars are more intricate than an Elise-based lightweight special, and they need air vents.

Another connection is that Lotus “prepared five designs” for the 340R, and “the decision was taken to go with the Russell Carr proposal.”

And who is the designer of the Evija? None other than Russell Carr. There are significant differences between these cars, and Lotus is a very different company than it was 20 years ago, but I was struck by the connection.

Is it feasible to drive a car for a high number of miles?

Have you ever come across a car with an incredibly high mileage? As mentioned in the Elise feature, I found a Series 1 example that has been driven for 290,000 miles. I’m interested in learning more about it and other high-mileage cars, to understand what makes a car suitable for accumulating such high mileage.

Is it only interesting and highly valued cars that are capable of covering long distances, or are there unremarkable vehicles still in operation, clocking up five-figure distances over decades of daily commutes while their counterparts have been scrapped?

Here’s How Jeep’s Electric Future Is Shaping Up

A recent source from JL Wrangler Forums, reveals Jeep’s plans for electric vehicle expansion. According to Stellantis’s official union agreement, Jeep intends to continue the current Wrangler and Gladiator until 2028.

Jeep plans a mid-cycle facelift for the Gladiator soon and significant upgrades for the 4xe PHEV models in 2025. A fully electric next-generation Wrangler with an optional range extender will come after 2028. These vehicles will be constructed at the North and South Toledo Assembly Complex in Ohio, which will undergo a $1.5 million renovation as part of the company’s investment strategy. A battery-electric variant of the STLA Frame-based Wagoneer range is anticipated in 2027, followed by a new-generation model in 2028.

The Grand Cherokee range will continue until 2027, where it will be offered with both ICE and BEV drivetrain options. Additionally, Stellantis plans to invest in all of its plants for various EV component manufacturing, tightening its local supply chain and driving more investment and employment.

The Jeep Wrangler And Gladiator Will Go Electric In 2028

It’s presumed that both the Wrangler and Gladiator will employ the STLA Frame chassis, giving them an edge in the off-roading segment. Most companies opt for more modern monocoque constructions. Jeep has not confirmed details of the EV Wrangler and Gladiator, but it is expected that the Wrangler will utilize STLA Frame, offering good reliability.

The Wrangler’s EV Evolution

Jeep plans to introduce an all-electric Wrangler by 2028, giving the current generation a few more years before it is replaced. Jeep has not confirmed which of the Stellantis STLA EV platforms will be used. The Wrangler 4xe has a 500-mile range, with just limited specifications available.

The STLA Frame will be launched by the upcoming Ram EV, with few specifications available at this time. The only confirmed figure is an electric range of 500 miles from a 159 to 200 kWh battery, based on the conservative European WLTP testing scale.

Jeep Pays More Attention To The Gladiator

The Gladiator is set to introduce a plug-in option in 2025 and will see a facelift before the end of this year, with an all-new generation planned for 2028. Jeep currently offers a versatile Gladiator range with various engine and transmission options, but the 4xe model is essential for modernizing the truck and competing with other popular models in the segment.

A Full Reinvention For The Grand Cherokee

This SUV caters to families with an affinity for adventure and has been a big hit, especially the existing 4xe derivative, offering compelling performance and versatility.

Updating The Grand Cherokee Range

A revision for the current Grand Cherokee range is planned for next year, with a new-generation variant following in 2027. This will coincide with Dodge’s all-new Durango launch, aligning with the return of the Cherokee moniker, placed on hiatus.

Comprehensive updates are expected for both two and three-row Grand Cherokee variants. While details about the EV Grand Cherokee are scarce, it is likely that ICE options will see updates, with possible introduction of the much-awaited Trackhack performance variant.

A New-Generation All-Electric Grand Cherokee

In 2027, a new generation of Grand Cherokee will be introduced with all-electric and range extender models falling under the all-new J6U generation. The vehicle is expected to adopt the unibody STLA Large platform, offering a 500-mile range and current proportions but with innovative scalability.

The Wagoneer Continues To Lead The Charge

A fully electric range extender model will be launched in 2025, followed by a fully electric model in 2027 under the current generation. A second mid-cycle facelift will be released in 2027. These niche large vehicles are expected to offer capable and refined drivetrains.

All Eyes On The Wagoneer

A 4xe PHEV drivetrain will come to the Grand Wagoneer range in 2025, with consumer anticipation building. The system’s combined output may need to be upgraded to suit the Wagoneer’s sizeable proportions.

The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will soon adopt the range extender EV drivetrain, followed by an independent all-electric model just one year later. Specifications for these models are still undisclosed. The ladder frame construction means that it will be built with off-roading in mind, while adaptive air dampers will soften the suspension for the Wagoneer, maintaining off-road capability while offering refined driving characteristics.

TMC Announces April Through September 2023 Financial Results

TOYOTA CITY, Japan (Nov. 1, 2023) — Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) today announced its financial results for the second quarter, which ended September 30, 2023.

Consolidated vehicle sales totaled approximately 4,744,000 units, an increase of approximately 585,000 units compared to the same period last fiscal year. On a consolidated basis, net revenues for the period totaled 21.981 trillion yen ($155.9 billion), an increase of 24.1%. Operating income increased from 1.141 trillion yen ($8.5 billion) to 2.559 trillion yen ($18.2 billion), while income before income taxes 1 was 3.521 trillion yen ($25.0 billion). Net income 2 increased from 1.171 trillion yen ($8.7 billion) to 2.589 trillion yen ($18.4 billion).

Regions

North America: Vehicle sales totaled approximately 1,385,000 units, an increase of 140,000 units. Operating income, excluding the impact of valuation gains/losses from interest rate swaps, increased by 299.5 billion yen ($2.1 billion) to 362.5 billion yen ($2.5 billion). 

Japan: Vehicle sales totaled approximately 1,072,000 units, an increase of 203,000 units.  Operating income, excluding the impact of valuation gains/losses from interest rate swaps, increased by 725.1 billion yen ($5.1 billion) to 1.584 trillion yen ($11.2 billion).

Europe: Vehicle sales totaled approximately 557,000 units, an increase of 78,000 units. Operating income, excluding the impact of valuation gains/losses from interest rate swaps, increased by 245.8 billion yen ($1.7 billion) to 192.2 billion yen ($1.3 billion). 

Asia: Vehicle sales totaled approximately 895,000 units, an increase of 78,000 units. Operating income, excluding the impact of valuation gains/losses from interest rate swaps, increased by 30.2 billion yen ($214 million) to 411.4 billion yen ($2.9 billion).

Other regions (including Central and South America, Oceania, Africa, and the Middle East): Vehicle sales totaled approximately 835,000 units, an increase of 86,000 units. Operating income, excluding the impact of valuation gains/losses from interest rate swaps, increased by 55.7 billion yen ($395 million) to 186.5 billion yen ($1.3 billion).

Financial Services

Financial services operating income decreased by 8.4 billion yen ($60 million) to 328.8 billion yen ($2.3 billion). Including valuation gains/losses, operating income increased by 46.0 billion yen ($326 million) to 244.9 billion yen ($1.7 billion).

Forecast

For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, TMC estimates consolidated vehicles sales will be 9.60 million units. Based on an exchange rate assumption of 141 yen to the U.S. dollar, TMC forecasts consolidated net revenue of 43.0 trillion yen ($305.0 billion), operating income of 4.5 trillion yen ($31.9 billion), income before income taxes of 5.55 trillion yen ($39.4 billion), and net income of 3.95 trillion yen ($28.0 billion).

RACE SAG FOR YOUR FORK: MR KNOW-IT-ALL

Dear Mr. Know-It-All,

I’ve heard how important sag is and found a lot of information on rear sag, but, surprisingly, little on fork sag. Could you please trickle down some of your vast knowledge on this subject? As an example, I have a 2021 KTM 300XC-W and ride mostly beatup single- and double-track in the forest. I am 185–190 pounds full gear. Thanks in advance.

Great query, Steve. Improper fork sag and spring preload can unhinge the handling traits of your machine. I spoke with Dick Wilk, a suspension expert, to get his insights on setting front sag:

“Similar to the rear, the static sag is the most crucial and should be around 25–35mm. Unlike the rear, the front sag is generally not adjustable externally, which is why there is limited information available. However, you can set the static sag on the shock first and then fine-tune the front by raising or lowering the forks in the clamps to find a comfortable handling setup. It’s important to note that the fork spring preload should be between 3–7mm. This is significant because over-preloading can negatively affect the front’s ability to absorb small impacts, maintain a line, and handle tight, rutted corners.”

2024 Mini Cooper EV Fully Revealed As Urban Three-Door Hatchback

The all-new electric Mini Cooper, which has been the subject of numerous leaks and official information over the past six months, has finally been fully revealed by the BMW-owned British brand.

The zero-emissions three-door hatch, officially named Mini Cooper, will make its public debut at IAA 2023 in Munich on September 5. It will be available in two versions: Mini Cooper E and Mini Cooper SE.

The base version of the Mini Cooper EV features a front-mounted electric motor that generates 181 horsepower (135 kilowatts) and 213 pound-feet (290 Newton-meters) of torque. This allows the battery-powered hatch to accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 7.3 seconds.
