Top 10 Best Hot Hatchbacks 2023

If you’re in the market for a high-performance car that offers a blend of speed, practicality, and affordability, then a hot hatch is the way to go. These versatile adrenaline-pumping machines take a compact family hatchback and upgrade it with a more powerful engine, enhanced suspension, and brakes. With stylish body kits and sporty design accents, hot hatches seamlessly fit into your daily life while delivering an exhilarating driving experience.

The concept of hot hatches isn’t new, with the Volkswagen Golf GTI popularizing the genre almost half a century ago. Today, many car brands offer their own supercharged family runabouts. However, due to stricter emissions regulations, full-size hot hatches are evolving. While internal combustion engines still dominate, there’s a growing sense that these petrol-powered machines may be the last of their kind. In fact, our list includes an entry that runs on electricity rather than traditional fuel.

Therefore, now is the perfect time to purchase one of these quick and versatile hot hatches before they potentially become legislated out of existence. The question is, which one should you choose? Well, keep reading as we present our top 10 hot hatches for 2023.

1. Toyota GR Yaris

While it may push the boundaries of the “full-sized” definition, the Toyota GR Yaris is a standout performer that deserves the top spot on our list. Despite sharing a silhouette with a supermini, this Japanese gem offers unrivaled performance, exceptional handling, and a pure sporting character. It may not be as spacious or practical as some other hot hatches, but in terms of driving pleasure, it’s hard to beat.

The GR Yaris was initially developed as a rally homologation special. However, a rule change in the World Rally Championship made it redundant. Thankfully, Toyota’s CEO, Akio Toyoda, a true petrolhead, couldn’t bear to see this motorsport-inspired powerhouse go to waste. The brand’s commitment to delivering exciting driver’s cars led to the development of this unique high-performance masterpiece.

Beneath its striking exterior, the GR Yaris features a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produces 257bhp. Coupled with a four-wheel drive system (and optional torque-vectoring differentials), this car can sprint from 0-62mph in just 5.5 seconds. Its chassis and suspension were developed in collaboration with Toyota Gazoo Racing’s WRC team, ensuring optimal handling on fast B-roads in any weather condition.

Valentino Rossi Wins his First GT World Challenge Europe Race at Misano

Valentino Rossi, the nine-time motorcycle world champion, has claimed his first victory in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS (GTWC). The race took place at Misano, Italy, and was part of the Sprint Cup in this season’s championship. Rossi, racing alongside Maxime Martin, dominated the one-hour race and secured the win in scorching hot conditions. This victory marks Rossi’s biggest achievement in car racing so far. BMW M Team WRT, Rossi’s team, also celebrated a class win in the Gold Cup, as well as other podium finishes.

Rossi and Martin were elated after their win and were cheered on by their countless fans. This triumph on home soil is Rossi’s most significant success in automobile racing. While he had previously won his first race on four wheels at the ‘Road to Le Mans,’ winning against the best GT racing drivers in the world in GTWC Europe is an even greater accomplishment. Martin played a crucial role in the victory, especially since the last time a BMW race car won in the GTWC Sprint Cup was eight years ago with Martin and Dirk Müller driving a BMW Z4 GT3.

BMW M Team WRT had more reasons to celebrate as well. Dries Vanthoor and Charles Weerts showed an impressive performance, climbing from 21st on the grid to finish third in the Saturday race. They started from pole position on Sunday but faced setbacks during the pit stop, ultimately settling for ninth place. Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer and Thomas Neubauer finished third, joining Rossi and Martin on the podium. Niklas Krütten and Calan Williams secured the Gold Cup victory on Sunday.

After the race weekend, Andreas Roos, Head of BMW M Motorsport, congratulated Rossi on his first GT World Challenge Europe victory and praised his development as a driver. Vincent Vosse, Team Principal of BMW M Team WRT, expressed his emotions and highlighted the significance of winning the race with Rossi at Misano. Rossi himself expressed his joy and gratitude, emphasizing the specialness of winning in this racing series at his home circuit. Maxime Martin also shared his excitement and mentioned the momentum they have as a team going into future races. Dries Vanthoor and Charles Weerts reflected on their performance, acknowledging the setbacks but remaining optimistic about their progress with the BMW M4 GT3.

Goodwood Festival of Speed cancelled on Saturday due to high winds

The penultimate day of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, scheduled for tomorrow, has been cancelled due to a weather warning for high winds, according to official confirmation. Concerns over heavy winds had already cast doubt on whether Saturday’s event would proceed, and sources earlier in the evening confirmed its cancellation. Festival organizers have now officially informed ticketholders, manufacturers, and exhibitors of the decision to close the gates.

A statement on the Festival of Speed website expressed regret over the decision and cited the severe wind warning in the Goodwood area as the reason. The safety of all on-site was highlighted as the utmost priority, with the forecasted high winds posing a significant risk to temporary structures across the site. Attendees were politely asked not to travel to Goodwood or attempt to access the site. It was noted that this was the first time in its 30-year history that the event would not take place on a Saturday.

Exhibitors were instructed to secure their stands ahead of the site shutdown, which is scheduled for 11am tomorrow. Festivalgoers staying at the campsite were allowed to remain but were advised to exercise caution given the conditions. The organizers expected the winds to have subsided by tomorrow evening, allowing the annual Goodwood Ball to proceed as planned from 7pm.

Sunday’s final day, which is forecasted to have little to no rain, is still scheduled to run as planned. However, it was emphasized that Sunday is completely sold out, and Saturday ticketholders will not be granted entry. They will receive a refund in the coming days.

Friday’s weather conditions at the event in Sussex were unfavorable, with the planned Red Arrows display being cancelled and heavy rain persisting throughout the afternoon. As a result, there were some delays for drivers leaving the event’s car parks.

Yamaha Is Bringing Its Ténéré 40th Anniversary Tour Across Europe In 2023

In 2023, Yamaha will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its original Ténéré motorcycle. The Ténéré line, which began with the 1983 Yamaha XT600Z, has continued to thrive over the decades. This milestone is a significant achievement for everyone involved.

To commemorate this special occasion, Yamaha Europe is organizing a full 40th anniversary Ténéré tour across various locations in Europe during the summer of 2023. Fans and enthusiasts, as well as casual observers, will have the opportunity to see and experience a range of attractions at these stops, including historic Ténéré production machines and classic Dakar race bikes.

The tour will also feature the first public appearances of the new Ténéré 700 World Rally, which was designed in tribute to the line’s 40th anniversary and pays homage to the legendary Dakar winner Stéphane Peterhansel.

The Yamaha Ténéré 40th Anniversary Tour began on June 22, 2023, with its first stop at the Adventure Bike Rider Festival in the UK, the largest annual ADV gathering in the region. It then traveled to Ténéré Spirit Aguilar de Campoo in Spain from June 31 to July 1.

Future events include Germany’s MaxlRide Motofestival from August 25 to 27 and France’s Alpes Aventure Motofestival from September 8 to 10. Yamaha may add more events to its calendar throughout the year, so it’s best to check with your local Yamaha dealer for the latest information.

The MaxlRide Motofestival will be held in the Bavarian Alps and offers camping, glamping, and hotel options for participants. The Alpes Aventure Motofestival will take place in Barcelonette, France, at the Parc de la Sapinière. For more information on these festivals, you can visit their official websites.

Challenges jeopardize the recovery of European car sales

Recent data reveals that car sales are surging in Europe due to the return of supply. However, the industry’s rebound in the second half of the year is under threat due to high new car prices and increasing interest rates.

The ACEA, a European automotive industry group, reports that overall sales in Europe, including the UK, have increased by 17% to 5.3 million during the first five months of the year.

Strong Safety Score!

Mahindra Scorpio N Global NCAP

In December 2022, Mahindra Scorpio N received a full 5-star safety rating in the global NCAP crash tests. The SUV received five stars for adult occupants’ protection and three stars for child occupants’ protection. The footwell area and bodyshell was rated stable and capable of withstanding further loadings. Since the Scorpio N was tested as per the updated crash test protocols, it also passed the side barrier impact, side pole impact, and ESC tests.

No Feature Upgrades

Mahindra Scorpio N

Given how well-equipped it is, there is no surprise that the Scorpio N has received no feature upgrade. It continues with an electric sunroof, an 8-inch touchscreen system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Sony sound system, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charger, and 6-way powered driver’s seat.

Safety is covered by front and rear cameras, up to six airbags, hill-assist control, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and ESC (electronic stability control).

Waiting Period

Mahindra Scorpio N

The Mahindra Scorpio N still commands a waiting time of up to a year in several cities. The SUV maker has confirmed that it will soon increase its production capacity over the coming months, which will subsequently reduce its waiting period. However, on an average, a Scorpio N buyer will have to wait around six months or more.

Minor Recall

Mahindra Scorpio N

In November 2022, Mahindra recalled certain batches of the Scorpio N and XUV700. The reason was due to a suspected defective rubber bellow inside the clutch bell housing of the manual variants. This would have resulted in performance concerns. Around 6,618 units of the Scorpio N were suspected of the flaw, which Mahindra replaced free of cost.

Faux Controversy

Mahindra Scorpio N Waterfall

There was a video which went viral, showing a Scorpio N owner parking his SUV under a waterfall. The video showed that the water was leaking through the sunroof, which raised several questions about the fit and finish.

Future Changes

Mahindra Scorpio N

The Scorpio N is still a relatively newer model and is unlikely to get any upgrades anytime soon. However, when it is upgraded, we can expect the inclusion of radar-based ADAS technology. It might be updated to offer six airbags as standard when the new mandate comes into effect later this year. In terms of pricing as well, we expect the Scorpio N to get dearer come 2024.

These 5 SUVs Sold in India are Priced Much Higher in Nepal

Due to high import taxes, even non-luxury cars can cross the Rs 1 crore threshold in the neighbouring nation

Nepal, our neighbouring country that shares its mountains with us, is a market for many international carmakers, including some from India. Carmakers that operate in both India and Nepal have a similar lineup in both countries, but the prices vary significantly. Some of the popular cars sold in India are three times more expensive in Nepal. Here are five examples of eye-watering price differences due to import tariffs:

It is available with a 116PS, 1.5-litre diesel engine paired with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission, and a 115PS, 1.5-litre petrol engine which comes with a 6-speed manual and a CVT gearbox.

Similar to India, the Tata Safari is equipped with a 2-litre diesel engine (170PS/350Nm) in Nepal, available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. However, Tata Motors does not offer any special editions in Nepal, such as the Dark, Red Dark, and Adventure editions.

Lastly, the Toyota Fortuner, which is already quite expensive in India, is the most expensive model on this list. Even the base-spec model in Nepal starts from Rs 1.39 crore in Indian currency. In Nepal, the Fortuner is available with the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine (204PS/ up to 500Nm) paired with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission, and it comes with 4WD.

The India-spec model also offers a 2.7-litre petrol engine (166PS/245Nm) with a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission, with the option of a two-wheel-drive system. However, the Fortuner Legender is not available in Nepal.

Reason for Such High Prices

None of these models are manufactured in Nepal and are brought into the country as imports. While several factors affect the pricing of a car, import tariffs play a significant role. The high import tariffs imposed by the Nepalese government make cars very expensive.

While the Indian government also imposes heavy tariffs on imported cars, making them almost twice as expensive, the tariffs imposed by the Nepalese government outweigh those in India by a significant margin.

An all-new 12.3-inch touchscreen – the most advanced and largest display ever offered on Wrangler – houses the fifth-generation award-winning Uconnect 5 system.

Uconnect 5 delivers operating speeds that are five times faster when compared to the previous generation. By using an Android operating system and over-the-air (OTA) updates, Uconnect 5 brings flexibility that will allow the system to continuously evolve to offer new content, features and services.
