A STRATEGY FOR SUCCESS: ROLLS-ROYCE MARKS 110TH ANNIVERSARY OF VICTORY AT THE 1913 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

  • Rolls-Royce celebrates the 110th anniversary of its impressive win at the first-ever Spanish Grand Prix on June 15, 1913
  • At the race, Silver Ghosts secured first and third places, conquering the challenging terrain north of Madrid
  • Victory was achieved through team tactics and personal sacrifices, with Don Carlos de Salamanca, Rolls-Royce’s new agent in Spain, taking first place, and Eric Platford, a dedicated engineer, claiming third place
  • This early achievement highlights Rolls-Royce’s dedication to excellence, inspiring greatness in its owners and staff

“Rolls-Royce’s dominance in long-distance trials in the early 20th century is well-known. However, motor racing, particularly in Europe, also played a crucial role in establishing the brand’s reputation for performance and reliability. Today, we reflect on the Silver Ghost’s victory at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix on June 15, 1913, which was not only a triumph of Henry Royce’s technology but also a testament to team spirit and self-sacrifice.”

– Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Relations, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

Today, Rolls-Royce commemorates the 110th anniversary of the 1913 Spanish Grand Prix, where Silver Ghosts claimed first and third places. This technical and strategic triumph set the stage for the legendary victory at the 1913 Alpenfahrt a few weeks later.

This victory was built upon three key elements: the superior engineering and performance of the Silver Ghost, meticulous team tactics, and the selflessness of one of Rolls-Royce’s most dedicated employees.

RACING AHEAD

In the early 20th century, endurance trials served as the primary platform for motor manufacturers, including luxury brands like Rolls-Royce, to showcase the capabilities of their cars. Rolls-Royce had an outstanding record in these grueling tests, having excelled in renowned events such as the 15,000-mile Scottish Reliability Trial in 1907 and the famous London to Edinburgh run in 1911, completed entirely in top gear.

During this period, motor racing was also rapidly evolving in terms of sophistication and popularity. In 1906, France hosted its first Grand Prix, sanctioned by the Automobile Club de France, of which Charles Stewart Rolls, a successful pioneer in motor racing, had been a member since the age of 18.

While the company generally favored trials over racing, by 1913, three years after Rolls’ untimely death, managing director Claude Johnson recognized the importance of boosting European sales and saw continental racing as a valuable promotional opportunity.

Consequently, Rolls-Royce entered two Silver Ghosts in the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix on June 15, 1913.

HIGH ENDEAVORS

The Spanish Grand Prix appealed to Rolls-Royce because it tested endurance and reliability, areas where the Silver Ghost excelled, rather than just raw speed.

The 192-mile course consisted of three laps, including two challenging passes in the rugged Guadarrama mountains northwest of Madrid. The race exclusively featured four-seater touring cars, required to have mudguards, lamps, hoods, and two spare tires. Bonnets were sealed, and no water could be added to the radiator once the race began, despite temperatures exceeding 30°C at the start in La Granja.

Among the 17 starters were two modified Silver Ghosts. The first was owned and driven by Don Carlos de Salamanca y Hurtado de Zaldivar, the newly appointed Rolls-Royce agent in Madrid, against the company’s wishes. The second was a Silver Ghost belonging to the company and driven by Eric Platford, one of Rolls-Royce’s most experienced and devoted engineers, responsible for many of the marque’s previous triumphs in trials.

STRATEGY AND SACRIFICE

Three hours into the race, Platford had established a commanding lead of over 20 minutes. However, this endeavor was not solely a sporting challenge but a shrewd business decision. Following strict instructions, Platford selflessly allowed Don Carlos de Salamanca to overtake him, prioritizing the company’s commercial goals over personal ambitions. Salamanca went on to win Spain’s first Grand Prix in a time of 3 hours, 34 minutes, and 12 seconds, with an average speed of 54 mph.

Unfortunately for Platford, his sacrifice also paved the way for another competitor, the Marqués de Aulencia in a Lorraine-Dietrich, who claimed second place, a mere three minutes ahead of him — a narrow margin during an era when races could be won or lost by hours.

JUST REWARDS

However, Platford’s selflessness did not go unnoticed. After the race, he drove his car to Madrid, where he received a congratulatory telegram from Claude Johnson. He was later rewarded with a holiday in Venice, partly as a gift and partly to escape the attention of the press. Additionally, he received two gold watches as compensation: one from the Rolls-Royce directors and the other from an appreciative Don Carlos de Salamanca.

ON TO THE ALPENFAHRT

The victory at the 1913 Spanish Grand Prix preceded the challenging 1,600-mile Alpenfahrt, a trial through the Alps, by just one week. As team manager, Platford led the Rolls-Royce Works Team to a clean sweep of the top four places, solidifying the Silver Ghost’s reputation as the “best car in the world.” Platford’s team spirit, dedication, selflessness, courage, and relentless pursuit of excellence epitomized the ethos of Inspiring Greatness, which continues to resonate at the core of the Rolls-Royce brand today.

Hyundai Exter Dashboard Leaked: A First Glimpse

The dashboard design is a combination of screens from the Grand i10 Nios and Venue

Hyundai Exter

  • The Hyundai Exter will be launched on July 10, and bookings are open.

  • It has some segment-first features, such as a dual dash cam setup and a single-pane sunroof.

  • Based on the leaked interior images, it will also have a digitised driver’s display (as seen in the Venue) and touchscreen unit.

  • It will be offered in five broad variants: EX, S, SX, SX (O), and SX (O) Connect.

  • It features a 1.2-litre engine that comes in both petrol and CNG options.

  • Its expected price is from Rs 6 Lakh (ex-showroom) onwards.

We are receiving more details about the upcoming Hyundai Exter as its launch date approaches. Leaked images of its interior have surfaced on the internet, showing some of the car’s features. Let’s have a look at what we can expect.

The Dashboard Design

The Exter’s interior design is similar to that of the Grand i10 Nios, especially the layout. It features an integrated housing design for the infotainment unit and instrument cluster, along with central AC vents below the display. Although it is hard to tell from the leaked images, it appears that the touchscreen is smaller than the 8-inch setup offered in the Grand i10 Nios and the 10.25-inch unit found in the i20.

However, the Exter will offer a digitised driver’s display, as seen in other Hyundai cars like Venue and Verna, along with auto AC and cruise control.

Other Notable Features

Hyundai Exter sunroof

The Hyundai Exter will have several notable features, including a dual dash cam setup, voice-assisted single-pane sunroof, six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), hill assist, and 3-point seat belts and reminders for all five seats, rear parking camera, and tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

There will be five broad variants: EX, S, SX, SX (O), and SX (O) Connect, with detailed features of each variant closer to the model’s launch.

Powering the Exter

Hyundai Exter Rear

The Exter will have only one 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT in petrol. It will also have a CNG option at launch with the manual transmission option.

Pricing and Rivals

The Hyundai Exter’s expected starting price is around Rs 6 Lakh (ex-showroom), and it will compete with Tata Punch, Citroen C3, Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, and Maruti Fronx.

Watch a Lamborghini Espada Barn Find Come Back to Life and Drive with its V12 Engine

In the 1970s, Lamborghini produced just over 1,200 units of the Espada, a two-door, four-seat grand tourer with a powerful V12 engine. One of such unique models has spent the last 15 years locked away in a barn in England. The precious Lamborghini, a 1971 Espada S2, was last driven in the mid-2000s before being hidden away in the same building where in 1605, conspirators had planned to assassinate King James I in the Gunpowder Plot.

The V12 engine was serviced before the car was stored, which makes starting it a breeze. The 3.9-liter engine has six twin-throat Webber 40 carburetors and is matched with a five-speed manual transmission. It was capable of producing 350 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque when it was brand new. The mechanicals have been largely preserved but some issues, like damage caused by rodents that chewed on the carpet and left droppings as well as fuel lines and connectors in rough shape, may pose some challenges during future restoration.

The car can be started with relatively little effort, and it settles into a comfortable idle. While the fuel leaks make it unsuitable for road use, it is driveable and can be cruisable on the property at low speeds.

The original dark blue paint of the car was replaced with Euro Mexico paint at some point, but the original red interior remains intact. The car’s door cards, instrument gauges, and headliner are in excellent condition, although it shows signs of animal damage. The Lamborghini Espada is just the latest fantastic barn find that showcases a slice of automotive history. Earlier this month, a fleet of Ferraris abandoned during Hurricane Charley, which hit Florida in 2004, was unearthed in Indiana.

Today, the carmaker’s preferred choice for those looking to have at least four seats is the Urus. Although it has four doors and a different engine, the Urus is just as impressive. In the new Performante trim, for example, the crossover makes almost double the Espada’s horsepower, producing 666 hp and accelerating to 62 miles per hour in just 3.3 seconds. Urus models are so popular that they have accounted for over 50% of the firm’s sales, with 5,367 sold in 2022 alone.

Here’s How Much A Fully Loaded Toyota Grand Highlander Costs

The Grand Highlander offers more space than the regular Highlander while being way more affordable than the larger Sequoia. The regular Toyota Highlander is an excellent SUV, but has always been criticized for its cramped third row. The Grand is almost a completely different SUV built on the same platform, offering more space, refinement, and high-end features.

The Grand is 6.5 inches longer than the standard Highlander with a 4.0-inch longer wheelbase, 5.5 inches of increased legroom, two inches of shoulder room, and an inch of headroom. The additional space is packed with modern technology and comfort to make it more appealing to large families, but there are some excellent options out there.

The Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX Platinum is the highest trim of the model, which comes with a whole load of extra features plus options. This is saying a lot, since the Grand Highlander comes standard with a bunch of nifty features. Toyota’s build page is live and we looked at how much the highest trim with all the best options will cost you.

The Grand Highlander

The only engine option for the Hybrid MAX Platinum is the 2.4-turbo four-cylinder paired with a hybrid system to produce a combined total of 362 horsepower and 400 pound feet of torque. This makes it one of the most powerful mid-size SUVs ever made by Toyota. The only available transmission is a 6-Speed automatic with AWD as standard.

The Hybrid MAX Platinum has the most limited mileage of all three variants at 27 MPG, while the hybrid 2.5 powertrain is the efficiency leader at a whopping 38 MPG, according to Toyota. The Hybrid MAX Platinum is the variant with the maximum towing capacity of 5000, with the lower variants being limited to 3500 pounds.

The next option you get to pick is the color, the Grand comes with seven colors to pick from, Celestial Silver, Midnight Black, Coastal Cream, Storm Cloud, and Blueprint with two of the colors – Ruby Flare Pearl and the Wind Chill Pearl costing $425 more.

We chose the Wind Chill Pearl. The Hybrid MAX Platinum also gives you the interior trim option of a gorgeous brown Portobello Leather and Ultrasuede. The other two interior options are standard for all the other variants, Black Leather with Ultrasuede and Light Grey with Ultrasuede. The Hybrid MAX Platinum does not get the option for the bench seats in the back.

The Hybrid MAX Platinum trim comes with heated and ventilated seats in the second row in addition to the front row. It also comes with panoramic glass moon roof as standard. Other features which distinguish this trim are a high definition HUD display, 360-degree camera view, digital rearview mirror, paddle shifters, and puddle lamps. The SUV also features Traffic Jam Assist (which requires a Drive Connect subscription or trial).

Hybrid MAX Platinum Comes With A Base MSRP Of $58,125

The interiors of the Grand Highlander are the most spacious in its class, with all the modern creature comforts and room to fit fully grown seven or eight adults, based on if you have selected the option for second-row captain seats.

All preliminary reviews coming in about the Grand seem to confirm that the third row is not just for children, but can actually fit 8 full-grown adults quite comfortably. The Grand offers 33.5 inches of legroom in the third row, which is the same as the Sequoia and considerably more than some of its competitors like the Honda Pilot (31.9 inches) and the Mazda CX-90 (30.4 inches).

With the second and third-row seats folded, the Grand Highlander offers up to 97.5 cubic feet of space, which is also the most when compared to its competitors. Clearly, Toyota had large families in mind when they designed this SUV, and it shows. The interior is filled with seven USB charging points along with two 120V outlets – one in the second row and one in the boot area, three zone climate control with separate climate control for the second row, and a bevy of storage space options for cups and smart devices.

All trims also come standard with second-row retractable window sunshades. You also have the option for a panoramic sunroof for all three trims. The driver gets a ten-way adjustable seat, access to a 12.3 touch screen and a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster. Both the front seats across all trims get heated and ventilated seats, with the same options available for the second row on higher trims. Another new feature offered is the power tailgate, which can be operated with a foot sensor below the rear fender as long as the key fob is in your pocket.

There are 13 interior accessories which can be added to improve your Highlander MAX Hybrid Platinum. For an additional $499 Toyota has an Integrated Dashcam which captures video, images, sound, and location data. It records upon ignition or on impact when parked or while in motion. We also added the All-Weather Floor Liners, which added $228 to the cost, the alternate to this are Carpet Floor Mats which also cost $228.

There is also the option for a Cargo Net-Envelope for $75, which is used to secure luggage to the cargo area. For $75 more, Toyota provides an Emergency Assistance Kit which consists of stainless steel pocket tools like pliers, screwdrivers, and wire cutters, emergency blanket, flashlight, work gloves, automotive-grade hose tape, tire gauge, bungee cord, shop towel, tether strap and jumper cables. Additionally, customers can opt for Illuminated Cargo and Door Sills for 345 each, which are made from brushed metal to protect these areas from scuffing and also look cool.

Some more optional extras include a Logo Side Puddle Lamp is available for $175, Universal Tablet Holder for $99, Quick Charger Cable Package for $70, First Aid Kit for $25, Cup Coin Holder/Ashtray for $29, and Key Glove for $20. How Much Will A Fully Loaded 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Cost?

All of these additional options and delivery, with processing and handling costs of $1,335 bring the cost of the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX Platinum to $61,870. This is a competitive price in this category, with other contenders like the Mazda CX-90 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee L also priced at the $60,000 mark.

The Grand Highlander 2024 is going to be hitting dealerships in July and looks to be a strong contender in the mid-size SUV space. It looks like Toyota is prepared to arrive strong with an excellent, feature rich premium SUV which is a great alternative to the regular Highlander. The regular Highlander will also still be available, for families looking for lesser space at a more practical price point.

First-ever Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV

The all-New Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe combines an advanced turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, two high voltage electric motors, robust TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission and proven Jeep 4×4 systems, resulting in 380 hp and 637 Nm of torque. Specifically, the 400-volt battery pack is made of 96-cell lithium-ion and ensures up to 31 miles of all-electric combined rang, and a total range of up to 434 miles.

The hybrid powertrain can be tailored to suit each trip, from daily commuting in pure-electric mode to no range anxiety for extended motorway trips, and allowing owners to explore nature off-road in near silence in EV mode. Different EV drive modes are available:

  • Hybrid Mode: This is the default mode. Hybrid mode blends torque from the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and electric motors. In this mode the powertrain will use HV battery power first, adding power from the 2.0-litre turbocharged I-4 to maximize responsiveness. When the battery is depleted, the vehicle seamlessly transitions to conventional hybrid electric vehicle operation.
  • Electric Mode: When the high voltage battery has sufficient State of Charge, the powertrain can operate on zero-emission electric power up to motorway speeds. In this mode, the engine will only turn on when the driver requests maximum power. When the battery becomes depleted, the vehicle will automatically revert to Hybrid mode.
  • eSave Mode: This mode prioritises propulsion from the 2.0-litre engine, saving the battery charge for later use such as EV off-roading or urban areas where internal combustion propulsion may be restricted. The engine will be shut off when power demand is low, for example when the vehicle is stationary, or when coasting.
  • Regenerative braking: whenever the vehicle is decelerating, the system first uses the available regenerative braking (up to 0.25 G) from the electric motors to slow the vehicle and recharge the battery, augmented by the traditional friction brakes when heavy deceleration is required, or when low traction conditions are detected.

Legendary Jeep 4×4 Capability

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe delivers unrivalled capability along with composed on-road driving dynamics. That legendary off-road capability begins courtesy of two 4×4 systems – Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II with rear electronic limited slip-differential (eLSD). Both systems are equipped with an active transfer case to improve traction by moving torque to work with the wheel with the most grip.

The class-exclusive Jeep Quadra-Lift air suspension now with electronic adaptive damping, delivers class-leading ground clearance and water fording. The system automatically adjusts to changing road conditions for enhanced comfort stability and control and delivers up to 27.5 cm of ground clearance and 61 cm of water fording.

The class-leading Selec-Terrain™ traction management system lets customers choose the on or off-road setting for optimum 4×4 performance. This feature electronically coordinates 4×4 torque split, braking and handling, steering and suspension systems, throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case, traction control, stability control, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and steering feel.

The Selec-Terrain system offers five available terrain modes (Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud/Sand) to provide optimised calibrations for any given driving scenario.

New for the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is front axle disconnect. If the vehicle senses that road conditions do not require all-wheel drive, the front-axle disconnect automatically places the Grand Cherokee in two-wheel drive, reducing drag on the driveline and improving fuel economy. Four-wheel drive automatically re-engages when the vehicle senses it is needed.

The most luxurious and technologically advanced Grand Cherokee ever

The slim, sculpted exterior of the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee delivers a more modern and updated premium appearance and is characterised by a wilder and larger iconic seven-slot grille and new front fascia, all-new premium, full-suite of LED lighting and a gloss black roof. The aerodynamic performance and efficiency are improved thanks to a lowered, tapered roof, thus without sacrificing cargo spaciousness and utility, while the lowered beltline and expansive glass allow more light into the cabin and increase outward visibility.

The all-new generous interior features handcrafted materials, class-leading rear-seat legroom and increased visibility. With such luxurious features and technology, the Grand Cherokee offers the possibility to take advantage of increased comfort, in particular by using the My Navigation connected service. If it is relevant to benefit from driving assistance when travelling by having a map that updates automatically via the Internet, to avoid congested roads.

Futhermore, the new fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has the most extensive technology features in its history. The suite of features includes:

  • Uconnect™ 5 – the most advanced Uconnect system ever offers three 10.1-inch digital displays
  • 10.1-inch full digital and customisable instrument cluster
  • New 10-inch full-colour windscreen heads-up display
  • A segment-exclusive interactive 10.25-inch front passenger screen offers co-pilot assistance with navigation, camera viewing and visual entertainment
