Fisker confirms a high-performance version of the Pear EV

Fisker, the American EV start-up, has officially announced the development of a high-performance variant of its electric hatchback, the Fisker Pear. This version, known as the Pear Extreme, is expected to deliver impressive performance due to its dual-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrain.

Although specific performance targets have not been confirmed by Fisker, it is highly anticipated that the Pear Extreme will significantly improve on the regular Pear’s claimed 0-60mph sprint time of 6.3 seconds.

For comparison, Fisker’s larger SUV model, the Fisker Ocean Extreme, features a total power output of 564bhp and 544lb ft, thanks to a 275bhp motor on each axle. This allows the 2434kg SUV to accelerate from 0-60mph in an impressive 4.0 seconds.

Industry experts at Autocar believe that the Pear Extreme will be positioned as a direct competitor to the £36,495 MG 4 XPower. The MG model is equipped with a dual-motor powertrain capable of delivering 429bhp, enabling it to sprint from 0-60mph in just 3.7 seconds. This makes it faster than the entry-level Porsche Taycan and on par with the Taycan GTS.

The Pear Extreme is also expected to feature a larger battery than the regular Pear, which currently offers a claimed range of 348 miles. However, the increased power and performance of the high-performance model may result in a reduced range compared to the standard variant.

Additionally, high-end versions of the Pear will include a solar-panelled roof, similar to the Fisker Ocean, enabling passive charging to extend the range. On the other hand, the cheapest variant of the Pear will come with a smaller battery pack, offering a claimed range of 198 miles.

Fisker predicts that the entry-level variant, a rear-wheel-drive model, will be the most popular option. It will be priced from $29,900 in the US (before incentives), approximately £23,500. However, the UK price is expected to be slightly higher due to local taxes and shipping costs from the factory in Ohio, US, operated by Taiwanese tech giant Foxconn.

Fisker Inc founder, Henrik Fisker, believes that in the next two years, people will realize that they do not necessarily need long-range capabilities, especially if they have a second car. He cites the slow sales of cars with 100- to 150-mile ranges as proof of this changing mindset.

Fisker Provides Details on the Pear Electric Crossover with a Range of Up To 320 Miles

Fisker has revealed more information and photos of the Pear, its upcoming entry-level model, following the preview of its future lineup on August 3.

The company has also announced that a production-intent Fisker Pear will be displayed to the public at the Fisker Lounge Munich from September 4-10, coinciding with the IAA Mobility 2023 event in Munich.

Priced at $29,900 (before incentives), the Pear is a crossover with seating for five or six people. It has a length of 179.1 inches (4,550 millimeters), making it smaller than the Fisker Ocean SUV but still spacious in its segment. The five-seat version can be converted into a six-seater by replacing the single front passenger seat and center console with a large two-seat bench.

One of the notable features is its Houdini trunk, which allows owners to load and unload in tight street parking situations and prevent damage in parking structures with low ceilings. The trunk lid and glass move down behind the rear bumper beam, providing protection in the event of a rear crash. Fisker has mentioned that the Houdini trunk demonstrated at low speed on August 3 will operate at high speed in the production version.

The estimated range for the smaller battery is 230 miles, while the larger battery is projected to deliver up to 340 miles. It’s important to note that these estimates may change. The range-topping version of the Ocean, known as the Ocean Extreme, has a maximum WLTP range of 440 miles, although specific powertrain details are still pending confirmation.

Celebrated as an iconic figure within the automotive industry, Mr. Fisker led the development of the BMW Z8 sports car, which was driven by the character of James Bond in 1999’s The World Is Not Enough. The Z8 Roadster then took the globe by storm, as Mr. Fisker was the President and CEO of BMW Designworks USA. By the year 2000 in the Z8, we’re talking about a car that had the same potent drivetrain as the M5, but was 500 pounds lighter, and had the acceleration of the Chevrolet Corvette.

One can guess that the performance of this car is without question not a surprise, given the healthy V-8 engine output, coupled with the car’s light weight. With the top down while rowing gears using the six-speed manual, you can bet this was as fun of a car as it was stylish. Despite the staggering price tag, there were only 400 examples earmarked for the United States, and all were spoken for, invoking the notion of an instant classic. Indeed, this roadster has the performance to match:

Ultimately this led to the Fisker Karma, the world’s first luxury plug-in hybrid, launched in 2011. The Karma featured a full-length solar roof, adjustable regenerative braking, and a vegan interior. The Ocean will have five trims: Sport; Ultra; Force E; Extreme; and the limited-edition One, with an estimated price range between $37,499-$68,999. The range will be between 250–360 miles, using as large as a 113 kWh battery pack. The available roof-mounted solar panels, called SolarSky, could supply up to 2,000 miles of range per year under ideal conditions. An interesting claim for sure, but one that has yet to be seen. Only the entry-level Sport has a single motor powering the front wheels, with a total output of 275 horsepower, expected to go from zero to sixty mph in 6.9 seconds. The latter trims have a motor on each axle, for a combined 550 horses and all-wheel-drive (AWD), propelling the EV SUV from zero to sixty in just 3.6 seconds. Front-drive models are rated to tow 2,040 pounds, while those with AWD can pull 4,000. The Force E is set to join the lineup later, an off-road version sporting 33-inch tires.

The driver-centric all-electric Ocean SUV will make use of technology such as an enormous 17.1-inch touchscreen that will rotate from landscape to portrait, unlike in Teslas, depending on driving conditions. It will also feature a Harmon Kardon stereo, of which every model will have along with the infotainment screen, except for the base Sport. Also, the Sport trim has a fixed-glass panoramic sunroof, but the rest carry a panoramic glass roof with a retractable panel.
