5 Key Benefits The Maruti Brezza Offers Over The New Tata Nexon

While the Tata Nexon packs a lot more in terms of features, the Brezza still has its advantages, like a CNG option

Maruti Brezza vs Tata Nexon

The Maruti Brezza has been one of the most sought-after subcompact SUVs in India since its introduction in 2016, frequently topping the monthly sales chart. Its closest competitor, the Tata Nexon, came out in 2017, and recently got a big refresh. Even the Maruti SUV got a generation upgrade in mid-2022, which made it an even bigger offering along with more features. While the Nexon, in recent times, has bested the Brezza in terms of sales, it has done it by clubbing the sales of its EV version as well and comes with a diesel option too. Meanwhile, the latter is only offered with one petrol engine.

While we already brought to you what the 2023 Tata Nexon offers over the Maruti Brezza, let’s now check out the key differences and benefits the Maruti SUV has to offer over the new Tata Nexon:

Heads-up Display

Maruti Brezza head-up display

The Brezza is the only sub-4m SUV to get a heads-up display. It relays information such as fuel level, speed, gear position indicator (only on automatic transmission variants), time, and mileage. Maruti is offering this feature only on the fully loaded ZXi+ trim of the Brezza.

A CNG Option

Maruti Brezza CNG

In early 2023, the Brezza became the first subcompact SUV to get a CNG powertrain. While there have been reports about the Nexon getting a CNG option too, its absence for now gives the Maruti SUV an advantage in the segment. The Maruti Brezza CNG can be had in three variants – LXi, VXi, and ZXi – priced from Rs 9.24 lakh to Rs 12.15 lakh.

More Efficient Petrol-auto Combo

Maruti Brezza 6-speed AT

The Maruti Brezza is only available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine (103PS/137Nm), which comes paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

Maruti Brezza Petrol AT

Tata Nexon Petrol AMT, Petrol DCT

The Brezza AT comes with Maruti Suzuki’s smart-hybrid technology, making it more frugal than its petrol-manual version.

More Affordable Petrol Automatic Option

Not only is the Maruti Brezza automatic more frugal than the Tata Nexon petrol-automatic options, it’s also more accessible.

Maruti Brezza Petrol-auto

Tata Nexon Petrol-auto

All prices ex-showroom Delhi

Even though the Maruti SUV offers a more sophisticated automatic transmission, it undercuts the Nexon petrol-AMT starting option by Rs 56,000.

Traditional vs Modern Design

The Maruti Brezza and the Tata Nexon facelift sport unique looks, appealing to different types of buyers. While the updated Nexon is full of sharp details, creases and a sloped roofline, the Brezza has the boxy shape of a typical SUV. It has a clean and sober design all around, highlights being the wraparound LED taillights and dual-tone alloy wheels.

The 2023 Nexon, on the other hand, gets modern touches to its design in the form of connected taillights, sleeker headlights and sharper alloy wheels.

So, which of these popular subcompact SUVs appeals to you? Let us know in the comments.

  • With over 13,000 units sold, Maruti Dzire comes at seventh position and continues to be the only sedan in the country to enjoy such demand.

  • With a noticeable rise in MoM sales, the Maruti Ertiga was the eighth best-selling model in August 2023. Now, you can also buy the MPV with a different badge and front fascia in the form of the Toyota Rumion.

Maruti Fronx

  • The Maruti Fronx enjoyed a strong demand, with over 12,000 models sold in August 2023. However, its MoM sales went down by 8 percent.

  • The Maruti Eeco had a consistent sales performance, remaining a popular choice in the market. Close to 12,000 units of the Maruti van were sold in August 2023.

  • Though Maruti Grand Vitara‘s sales in August 2023 were lower than its brand peers, it has registered a positive MoM sales growth of 30 percent. It was edged out of the top 10, by a margin of just 41 units, by the Eeco.

Hyundai Venue

  • Hyundai Venue maintained its sales with slight fluctuations but remained competitive within its segment. The subcompact SUV’s feature list and transmission options have been updated recently, making it the first in its segment to offer ADAS.Click here to know more about it.

Kia Seltos

  • The Kia Seltos had consistent sales, performing well in its category compared to the previous month. Since the Seltos has recently received a facelift, we expect that its sales will be boosted in the coming months.

  • The second-last model in this list, the Mahindra Scorpio, crossed the sales of 9,500 units in August 2023, with a dip of almost 6 percent compared to July 2023. Please note that these numbers include the sales of both Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic SUVs.

  • The Maruti Alto K10 faced a significant drop in sales compared to the previous year. However, its MoM sales went up by over 2,500 units.

2023 Tata Nexon

  • The Tata Nexon, which is usually a high-selling SUV, saw a much lower demand than usual at just above 8,000 units sold. This could be because of the fact that the facelifted Nexon is due to arrive on September 14. Again, these figures include the sales of the regular Nexon as well as the Nexon EVs.

Another reason for high pending orders could be that the carmaker allocates certain units of its models for export, but the number of pending orders could reduce in the coming years as Maruti is planning to set up another manufacturing facility, the construction of which is underway, and increase its production capacity.

Maruti Brezza Automatic Now More Fuel Efficient Than Manual Variants

The Maruti Brezza has undergone a feature reshuffle for the petrol-manual and CNG variants

Maruti Brezza

  • The current-generation Brezza initially came with a 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild hybrid technology.

  • However, the manual variants no longer feature mild-hybrid technology, resulting in a lower claimed fuel economy.

  • The Brezza now offers a claimed fuel efficiency of 17.38kmpl, compared to the automatic variants’ 19.80kmpl.

  • Maruti has also removed electronic stability control and hill hold assist from the CNG variants.

  • Rear seat belt reminders are now standard across all variants.

  • Prices remain unchanged, ranging from Rs 7.29 lakh to Rs 13.98 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Maruti Brezza has undergone a silent update that has resulted in the removal of some key features. The most significant change is the exclusion of mild-hybrid technology from the petrol-manual variants, which has led to a decrease in fuel economy.

Brezza Manual Is Now Less Fuel Efficient

Maruti Brezza

The Brezza was initially launched with a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with mild-hybrid technology as standard. This technology included features such as idle start-stop, regenerative braking, and torque assist during acceleration. However, after removing this feature from the manual variants, their claimed fuel efficiency has dropped to 17.38kmpl, a decrease of 2.77kmpl from the previous figure of 20.15kmpl (LXI and VXI MT).

On the other hand, the automatic variants of the Maruti Brezza still feature mild-hybrid technology and maintain a fuel economy of 19.80kmpl. As a result, those opting for the more expensive 6-speed torque converter automatic option can enjoy better mileage compared to those choosing the 5-speed manual transmission. Regardless of the transmission, the powertrain produces 103PS and 137Nm of torque.

CNG Variants Updates

Maruti Brezza

The CNG variants of the Maruti Brezza were initially launched with the same features as the corresponding petrol-manual variants. However, the CNG variants now offer fewer safety features as electronic stability control and hill hold assist have been removed.

The Brezza CNG variants still include dual front airbags, rearview camera, rear wiper washer, and ISOFIX child seat mounts. The top-spec petrol variants additionally offer up to six airbags, a 360-degree camera, heads-up display, and auto day/night IRVM.

New Standard Safety Feature Added

Maruti Brezza

In addition to the feature removals, Maruti has also introduced seat belt reminders for rear passengers as a standard feature in the Brezza SUV. There are no weight sensors for the rear seats, so regardless of whether there are passengers seated at the back, seat belts must be strapped on. This may cause inconvenience, as passengers will need to unbuckle and then put on their seat belts upon entering the car.
