Valve Now Offers Affordable Certified Refurbished Steam Decks

One of the major criticisms of the Steam Deck is its limited battery capacity. Many reviewers and gamers have reported that the console can only last for around 90 minutes of gameplay (varies based on the game). With batteries being one of the first components to show aging, concerns arise about the battery life of a refurbished Steam Deck.

However, Valve assures that each device undergoes rigorous testing before being certified and put up for sale. This testing includes assessing battery health to ensure proper functionality and longevity. In addition, every refurbished device goes through a total factory reset and receives the latest operating system update.

Valve claims that each Steam Deck is subjected to over 100 tests at their facilities. These tests cover various aspects such as the screen, audio system, controller inputs, and other internal hardware. The company even states that refurbished units meet or exceed the performance standards of new retail units. Essentially, the only difference between a refurbished Steam Deck and a new one may be some light cosmetic wear-and-tear. Refurbished Steam Decks will also come with a carrying case and Quick Start guide.

Easy Steps to Check If Nintendo Switch Servers Are Down

From time to time, Nintendo’s servers may experience issues, but before assuming that the problem lies with them, it’s important to rule out any potential connectivity issues on your end.
To start, ensure that your internet connection is working and that your Nintendo Switch is properly connected to it. You can easily confirm if your internet is functioning by using another device on the same network and checking if it can access the internet without any problems. If you’re connected to Wi-Fi but still unable to access the web, it is likely that the issue is with your internet connection. In that case, you may need to reset your router or contact your internet service provider for assistance.

If your internet is working fine, follow these steps on your Nintendo Switch:

  1. Navigate to the System Settings.
  2. Scroll down and select Internet.
  3. In the Internet Settings menu, you should see your connection listed at the top, marked with a blue checkmark if properly connected. If not, follow the on-screen instructions to establish a connection.
  4. Even if you see the checkmark, it is still recommended to scroll down and select ‘Test Connection.’ This will verify if your Switch is properly interfacing with your internet network.

It is also important to consider the placement of your Wi-Fi router. Make sure it is positioned in a location where your Nintendo Switch can receive a strong and stable connection.

11 Hidden Steam Deck Features That Will Change The Way You Use Your Console

Game controllers have become fairly standardized with the usual buttons and sticks. However, the Steam Deck and Xbox Elite Controllers offer additional features that enhance gameplay. In addition to extra paddles on the undersides, the Steam Deck also has a unique input.

The Steam Deck features an “Outer Ring” input for each analog stick. This activates when the stick is pressed all the way in any direction. By selecting the controller icon in a game’s Steam card, users can assign different actions to the outer ring. This can be done by choosing a preferred controller template and editing the layout. This customization option allows for unique actions, such as firing a weapon with the outer ring in a twin-stick shooter.

Moreover, the Steam Deck can greatly expand its inputs with “Action Set Layers.” These layers function similarly to Steam button combo shortcuts, but users have full control over which button activates the layer and how it interacts with other buttons. By setting up the layers in the “Edit Layout” tab, users can perform a wide range of in-game actions without compromising the standard button layout.

Meta and UFC Partner to Bring MMA Fights to Virtual Reality in Horizon Worlds

If you’re a fan of UFC fights, you might be wondering why you should watch them in virtual reality (VR) instead of on a regular TV or a mobile device. After all, wouldn’t it be more comfortable without a VR headset strapped to your face? Well, the main advantage here is the ability to virtually watch the fights with friends, even if you’re far away from each other.

Meta, the company behind the popular VR device Quest, promises that users will be able to communicate with each other in real-time within the Xtadium. This feature expands on a previous test conducted in 2022, where similar viewing sessions were held. So, you can chat with your friends as if you were sitting together, enhancing the social aspect of watching sports.

According to Sebastian Amengual, co-founder of YBVR (a company involved in the collaboration), watching a fight in VR provides a completely different experience compared to a flat screen. The proximity to the fighters and the intense energy of the matchup becomes more palpable, making the viewing experience more immersive.

Meta also reveals that VR viewers will have a perspective similar to that of the camera operators during the fight. This ensures that viewers see the action up close and personal, just as it is captured for streaming. If this excites you, there’s more good news. Meta hints that their collaboration with YBVR could lead to other exciting VR sports experiences in Horizon Worlds in the future, although specific details have not been disclosed yet.

Microsoft Launches Xbox Repair Parts for Purchase

Microsoft is introducing a new initiative that allows customers to purchase Xbox repair parts directly from the company. While there has been no official statement from Microsoft, it appears to be in a beta or testing phase to assess user behavior. If successful, this program could pave the way for more device repair options in the future.

There are several reasons behind Microsoft’s decision to offer self-repair assistance. The Xbox has a dedicated modding community, and this service would greatly benefit them. Additionally, by providing exclusive and high-quality repair offerings, Microsoft can manage excess stock effectively.

The primary reason, however, is Microsoft’s commitment to transparency and supporting self-service repairs, as outlined in their 2021 agreement with shareholder advocacy group As You Sow. This agreement aims to empower consumers who prefer self-repair options rather than relying on original manufacturers. Over the years, Microsoft has made strides in enabling self-service repairs, starting with products like Surface laptops. Including Xbox products in this initiative marks a significant advancement. Let’s hope it becomes a permanent offering.

5 Forgotten Features Of The Original Xbox That Are Pure Nostalgia

The first-generation Xbox controller bundled with the original Xbox systems, known as the Duke, will instantly transport any old school Xbox gamer back to the good old days. The Duke was known for its large size and distinctive design.

The Duke controller, originally designed by Denise Chaudhari and her team, featured innovative elements like its offset thumbstick placement. Its bigger size appealed to gamers with larger hands, offering a comfortable grip and ergonomic feel. Despite being bulky, the Duke had excellent build quality and durability, making it a reliable companion for countless gaming sessions.

Even though the Duke controller didn’t have wireless functionality and faced criticism for its size, it remains an iconic symbol of the original Xbox era. Third-party accessory makers like Hyperkin have recognized the nostalgia attached to the Duke and have released accurate replicas for the Xbox One, capturing the essence of the original controller.

The Duke’s influence on future controller designs is undeniable. Its unique features, such as the offset thumbsticks and oversized Xbox button, have influenced subsequent Xbox gamepads and contributed to the brand’s distinct identity. The controller holds sentimental value for those who grew up with the original Xbox, reminding them of the countless hours spent playing their favorite games (and the occasional hand cramps).

The Top 5 Headsets for Nintendo Switch in 2023

The Skullcandy PLYR 1 over-ear gaming headset is one of the top contenders on this list. While it may not be the cheapest option available, it comes with a range of impressive features. With a battery life of 24 hours and rapid charging capabilities, you won’t have to worry about your headset dying in the middle of a gaming session. The microphone features include a detachable boom, Clear Voice Smart Mic, LED Mic Mute Indicator, and a secondary mic. On top of that, the headset also has convenient onboard controls for various functions such as power, Bluetooth pairing, volume adjustment, muting the microphone, sidetone, EQ modes, and play/pause switching.

What sets the PLYR 1 apart from other headsets is its incorporation of Tile technology. Using the Tile App, you can track the location of your headset if it gets misplaced or stolen. Keep in mind, however, that if you want to enjoy the wireless feature, you’ll need to purchase an additional adapter through Skullcandy. The price of the PLYR 1 is around $130, making it a great option for those looking for a high-quality gaming headset.

Should You Still Consider Purchasing the Nintendo Switch in 2023?

Despite some factors that may give you pause, there are still reasons why buying a Nintendo Switch in 2023 could be a good choice. One of the main concerns is that the Switch has been available for some time now, and it’s possible that Nintendo has a new or updated version of the console in the works, or even a completely new generation console.

Nintendo has confirmed that they won’t release any new Switch console in this fiscal year, which means not until at least March 2024. Unless Nintendo surprises us with a sudden release, we shouldn’t expect a new console anytime soon. Therefore, it is still safe to buy a Switch this year.

However, there’s another reason to think twice about buying a new Switch, even after a new Nintendo Switch 2 is announced. When the Switch was released in 2017, its portability and handheld mode were revolutionary. But in 2023, we have alternatives like the Steam Deck, other portable PC competitors, and even PlayStation is entering the handheld console market. These options offer portable access to the latest AAA games and, in the case of the Steam Deck, access to a wide range of emulators to play classic games.

Ultimately, the decision to buy a Nintendo Switch in 2023 depends on whether you are primarily interested in playing Nintendo games. If titles like “Zelda” and “Elephant Mario” are high on your priority list, then the Switch is undoubtedly a console worth considering.

Top 5 Xbox One Headsets in 2023

SteelSeries offers a range of exceptional headsets for gaming on both PCs and consoles. Among their top contenders are the Arctis Nova 3 and the Arctis Nova 7. However, the Arctis Nova Pro Wireless stands out as the best of the bunch. It boasts excellent sound quality with hi-res capable drivers, immersive 360-degree spatial audio, direct EQ control, and an AI-powered mic that effectively eliminates background noise. Moreover, the retractable microphone ensures it stays out of your way when gaming alone.

Comfort is a priority with this headset. It features a Transparency Mode and powerful noise cancellation, thanks to its four specialized microphones. Its versatility shines through with both 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth connectivity, along with dual USB connections that support not only the Xbox One but also the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch. An added bonus is the ability to hot-swap between two batteries, offering hours of uninterrupted gameplay.

On the downside, the Arctis Nova Pro Wireless headset lacks a visually appealing design. While aesthetics may not be crucial during gaming sessions, it might disappoint those who use the headset for streaming or competitive gaming in public. Additionally, the headset comes with a hefty price tag, retailing at $350. However, you can find it on Amazon for $323. Considering its exceptional features, it is worth the investment if you seek the best Xbox One gaming experience.

How To Safely Clean Your Nintendo Switch And Joy-Cons

Modern electronics are always changing, improving, and even innovating, but there’s one thing many of them still haven’t found a fix for: day-to-day dirt. It doesn’t help that humans, by our very nature, aren’t perfectly clean creatures. Sure we wash our hands, wash laundry, take showers, and so on, but since we’re all mammals composed of organic matter we also produce oil from our skin. Between years of unavoidable oily buildup and regular old dust particles (and the odd mishap), your regularly-used gadgets can and will get dirty.

Your Nintendo Switch and its Joy-Con controllers are no exception. If you play in handheld mode often, chances are good that you’ll begin to see that telltale buildup that most game players have gotten used to over the decades. If you primarily play in docked mode with a different controller, on the other hand, you likely won’t have much (if any) oily buildup content, but the console is far more susceptible to gathering dust since it isn’t being moved often.

Fortunately, cleaning both your Switch console and Joy-Cons is a relatively simple process. And as long as you’re careful, and don’t deviate from Nintendo‘s recommended instructions, you won’t have to worry about damaging the hardware, either.

How to clean your Nintendo Switch and Joy-Cons

A big thing to remember with cleaning your Switch (or any electronics, really) is to never pour water or cleaning solutions onto it directly and never submerge your devices in water or cleaner. Using an appropriate applicator (i.e., wipe, cloth, etc.) is much safer as it uses far less liquid and gives you much more control over where said liquid goes.

  1. Get a hold of a clean cloth. This can be a clean rag or soft screen wipe. Paper towels or napkins will also work so long as you aren’t wiping off the screen, as they’re more abrasive and could potentially create scratches.
  2. Make sure the Switch and Joy-Cons are powered down completely (i.e., not just in Sleep Mode), and unplugged if applicable.
  3. Dampen the cloth with water, then wring out the excess. If it’s too wet, the excess moisture could get inside the housing — or at least take longer to dry.
  4. Gently wipe the surface of your Switch or Joy-Cons with the damp cloth. Rinse and wring out the cloth, then repeat as needed.
  5. Wait for the surfaces to dry completely before turning anything back on. Similarly, wait until the Switch is dry before putting it back in its dock.

In the event that you need to disinfect your Switch or Joy-Cons rather than simply clean their surfaces, Nintendo suggests following the same steps as above — only using a “consumer-grade disinfectant” with no more than 70 percent alcohol instead of water.
