Stellantis To Reopen Belvidere Factory To Build New Midsize Truck [UPDATE]

Update: UAW Vice President Rich Boyer announced that a midsize truck will be built at the Stellantis factory in Belvidere, Illinois. Ram has not yet confirmed or commented on this surprise announcement.

In February, Stellantis temporarily closed down its assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, which was previously manufacturing the Jeep Cherokee. This decision resulted in 1,200 workers being laid off without any assurance of future employment. However, there is good news now as the automotive conglomerate has reached a tentative agreement with the United Auto Workers.

Vice President Rich Boyer of the UAW shared the favorable development in an official statement on YouTube: “UAW family, it is my great honor to announce that we have saved Belvidere. Again, we have saved Belvidere… We have won a new vehicle at Belvidere…it will be a midsize truck, and we will have two shifts.”

Why Two-Stroke Engines Became Obsolete

Internal combustion engines convert air and fuel into energy through combustion, powering the attached machinery. These engines can be categorized into two-stroke and four-stroke engines, depending on their mechanical complexity.

All internal combustion engines rely on a piston and a crankshaft. When combustion occurs, the piston is pushed down, rotating the crankshaft. As the piston rises, it further rotates the crankshaft. This repetitive process drives vehicles and other machinery with engines. The distinction between two-stroke and four-stroke engines lies in how often this piston-crankshaft rotation occurs.

Each up or down movement of the piston is called a “stroke.” In a four-stroke engine, the spark plug ignites the fuel/air mixture every four strokes, or every other full crankshaft rotation. In contrast, a two-stroke engine fires the spark plug every two piston strokes, or every full crankshaft rotation. Two-stroke engines are smaller, lighter, and more powerful relative to their size, mainly because they lack valves found in other engines.

In four-stroke engines, the fuel and air mixture only occupies the area above the piston. Conversely, in two-stroke engines, the mixture is present both above and below the piston. These design factors make two-stroke engines easier and cheaper to manufacture, which initially seemed advantageous. However, these characteristics eventually led to the phasing out of two-stroke engines by many modern countries and industries.

SEAT To Have New Role In The VW Group, Won’t Replace Existing Cars

[UPDATE] The original report from Autocar stated SEAT would stop making cars altogether at the end of the life cycle of current-generation models. We’ve revised the article to reflect the changes as SEAT is moving away from mainstream car-making to take up a new role.

The Volkswagen Group has announced that SEAT will change its approach. Speaking with Autocar at the 2023 IAA Mobility in Munich, VW Group’s CEO Thomas Schäfer revealed that there is a planned “different role” for the Martorell-based automaker.

What exactly will this new role be? With next-generation cars not in the picture, the future of SEAT is uncertain. According to Autocar, it could transition to becoming a mobility company, similar to Renault’s Mobilize. SEAT already has the MÓ lineup of electric scooters, indicating its potential in the mobility space. However, the current SEAT cars will continue to be produced for several more years, but there won’t be direct replacements with SEAT badges.

DOJ Sues SpaceX Over Alleged Hiring Discrimination In The US

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against SpaceX, alleging hiring discrimination in the United States. SpaceX has previously stated that it requires U.S. green cards as a minimum requirement for employment due to the company’s involvement in advanced weapons technology. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, has emphasized that the company is legally prevented from hiring international candidates. He has also mentioned that a normal work visa is insufficient, unless the applicant receives special approval from the Secretary of Defense or the Secretary of State.

However, the Justice Department argues that there are no hiring restrictions in place based on export control laws. According to the DOJ, refugees and asylees have equal access to employment opportunities without requiring additional government approval for accessing “export-controlled information and materials.” The lawsuit aims to bring about policy changes at SpaceX, as well as seek civil penalties and back pay for victims affected by the alleged hiring restrictions.

Microsoft Launches Xbox Repair Parts for Purchase

Microsoft is introducing a new initiative that allows customers to purchase Xbox repair parts directly from the company. While there has been no official statement from Microsoft, it appears to be in a beta or testing phase to assess user behavior. If successful, this program could pave the way for more device repair options in the future.

There are several reasons behind Microsoft’s decision to offer self-repair assistance. The Xbox has a dedicated modding community, and this service would greatly benefit them. Additionally, by providing exclusive and high-quality repair offerings, Microsoft can manage excess stock effectively.

The primary reason, however, is Microsoft’s commitment to transparency and supporting self-service repairs, as outlined in their 2021 agreement with shareholder advocacy group As You Sow. This agreement aims to empower consumers who prefer self-repair options rather than relying on original manufacturers. Over the years, Microsoft has made strides in enabling self-service repairs, starting with products like Surface laptops. Including Xbox products in this initiative marks a significant advancement. Let’s hope it becomes a permanent offering.
