Summary

  • The classic car market experienced a decline at Monterey’s auctions, raising the question of whether now is the time to invest in classic cars.
  • Pre-war classics defy market fluctuations and continue to hold their value, with brands like Bentley and millennials driving demand.
  • Various indices, such as the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index and Hagerty’s data, provide insights into the performance and volatility of classic cars as an investment asset class.

The classic car market recently saw a decline in sales at Monterey’s auctions, leading to the question of whether it is a good time to invest in classic cars. However, pre-war classics have shown resilience and have maintained their value. Brands like Bentley and the growing interest of millennials have contributed to the demand for these types of cars. Several indices, including the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index and Hagerty’s data, provide valuable information about the performance and volatility of classic cars as an investment asset class.

The market at Monterey’s auctions experienced a decline in sales compared to the previous year. The sell-through rate dropped from 78 percent to 68 percent, and even renowned brands like Ferrari were affected. For example, a 1967 Ferrari 412 P, estimated at $40 million, sold for only $30.2 million. This decline raises the question of whether it is a good time to invest in classic cars.

Monterey’s Top Classic Car Sales: A Glimpse

The top classic car sales at Monterey’s auctions included a 1957 Jaguar XKSS Roadster, which sold for $13.2 million, and a 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, which fetched nearly $9.5 million. Other notable sales included a 1959 Ferrari 410 Superamerica SIII Coupe and a 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Tourer. Ferraris dominated the top 10 sales, which is a common trend at Monterey’s auctions. Auction houses such as Gooding & Co. and RM Sotheby’s had impressive sell-through rates of 76 percent and 85 percent, respectively. Bonhams and Broad Arrow also secured spots on the list with sell-through rates of 73 percent and 80 percent, respectively.

Although there was a decline in sales at Monterey’s auctions, classic cars from the pre-war era have shown resilience. Bentley, in particular, has seen success with its prewar continuation series, and millennials have shown a growing interest in these classics. Pre-war classics are prized for their craftsmanship, design, and quality, and they continue to capture the hearts of enthusiasts and collectors. Some notable sales in this category include a 1914 Mercer Type 35-J Raceabout, a 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Cabriolet, and a 1912 Simplex 50 HP Toy-Tonneau. RM Sotheby’s ‘barn finds’ collection, which featured derelict Ferraris, also garnered significant attention and high prices.

Understanding The Market Through Indices:

There are several indices that provide insights into the classic car market as an investment asset class. The Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index reports a 25 percent growth in vintage cars over the past year, positioning classic cars as the second-best performing luxury asset after fine art. However, classic cars also exhibit volatility, similar to startups, which presents both potential rewards and risks. The Historic Automobile Group International (HAGI) index suggests that classic cars outperformed most major collectibles during the 2008-2010 recession, with only gold outperforming them. Hagerty, another renowned name in the industry, categorizes the market into segments and provides its own market rating. The Hagerty Blue Chip Index shows stability in the blue-chip classics segment, while the Affordable Classics Index has shown growth, particularly post-pandemic. Muscle Cars have also displayed growth and enduring appeal.

Leading the classic car market are brands like Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Ferrari. Ferraris, in particular, are considered the “blue chips” of the sector. While Ferrari had impressive sales in 2022, Porsche had a higher volume of cars auctioned in Q4 2022. When considering future classics, sporty 90s cars like the first-generation Dodge Vipers are seeing prices increase. Recent models with luxury and uniqueness are also in demand. Classic cars are often compared to fine wine in terms of their value appreciation and rarity. However, caution is advised in this volatile market, favoring Affordable Classics and Muscle Cars. The classic car market is expanding in Asia and remains a compelling investment option for those passionate about these timeless vehicles.

Why Now Is The Perfect Time To Invest In Classic Cars

The recent decline in sales and market fluctuations in the classic car market present a golden opportunity for investors. Pre-war classics continue to hold their value and defy market fluctuations. The growing interest of millennials and brands like Bentley contribute to the demand for these classics. Various indices, such as the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index and Hagerty’s data, provide valuable insights into the performance and volatility of classic cars as an investment asset class. Classic cars possess a timeless charm, craftsmanship, and beauty that make them a compelling investment option. Now is the opportune moment for investors to enter the world of classic car investments.

Removing Spyware From Your Android Phone: A How-To Guide

When it comes to spyware, whether on your Android phone or PC, it’s best to maintain a healthy skepticism. Avoid tapping on random ads, downloading apps from outside the Google Play Store, and responding to unusual unsolicited messages. Verify any supposed issues with your mobile provider by visiting their official website or calling them.

In addition to being vigilant, you can utilize security features to make it harder for spyware to infiltrate your phone. Google Play Protect, for example, regularly scans your installed apps for abnormalities, providing an extra layer of protection.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.

  2. Tap your profile icon.

  3. Tap “Play Protect.”

  4. If Play Protect is disabled, tap the gear icon in the top-right.

  5. Enable the “Scan apps with Play Protect” toggle.

It is also recommended to install an antivirus utility on your smartphone to establish firewalls and perform deeper scans than Play Protect. Additionally, enable two-step verification for all email accounts synced to your phone to make it more difficult for unauthorized access.

Scratches on your car can be frustrating, whether they’re caused by someone in a parking lot, a zipper scraping against the door, or tight driving on a narrow road. But you don’t have to rush to a body shop for repairs. There are plenty of products available that you can use at home to remove scratches effectively.

In this article, we’ll be looking at the best car scratch removers on the market. Some are specifically designed to remove scratches, while others are polishes that also claim to remove scratches. We tested these products on various types of scratches, from small and barely noticeable ones to larger and deeper ones caused by a tree branch. We evaluated how well they performed and considered price as a factor.

RECOMMENDED: AutoGlym Scratch Removal Complete Kit

Price: £20.98

What’s included: 100ml Scratch Remover, 100ml Super Resin Polish, Hi-Tech finishing cloth, scratch removal applicator

The AutoGlym Scratch Removal Complete Kit includes everything you need to remove scratches without having to buy any additional products. The kit contains a 100ml Scratch Remover, 100ml Super Resin Polish, a Hi-Tech finishing cloth, and a scratch removal applicator. This kit would make a good present for friends or family, although they might not appreciate the sentiment behind it. We found that it helped reduce the visibility of larger scuffs, but due to the size of the products, it may not be suitable for massive scratches. Autocar product test: What is the best tyre gauge?

A tyre gauge is a must-have tool, whether you keep it in your car or in the garage. With so many options available, we set out to discover which ones are the best.

To determine the top performers, we tested the tyre gauges in both daylight and low-light conditions. We considered factors such as visibility of the dials, ease of connecting to the tyre valve, quality and durability, pressure range, and any additional features offered. Of course, we also took value for money into account.

Best buy – Goodyear Portable Tyre Pressure Gauge

Price: £14.99

Buy from: Amazon

Pressure range: 0-60psi (0-4.1bar)

The Goodyear gauge is compact and well-built, making it ideal for storing in a glovebox. It features a 45-degree rotating chuck, which makes it easy to attach to the valve. While gauges with flexible hoses are more convenient for hard-to-reach valves, the Goodyear gauge is still highly functional. Additionally, its durable plastic case allows for easy storage in a garage. We particularly appreciate the simplicity and reliability of the analog design, especially considering that this tool is often left unused for long periods of time.

While we give the Goodyear gauge the top spot for its compact size, if portability is not a concern for you, the Draper gauge is an excellent alternative.

Will It Run? Find Out If This 1974 Honda CL125 Will Ride Again

In a recent video by Cars and Cameras, they showcased what two hundred dollars can get you. They managed to get their hands on a 1974 Honda CL125 that had not been ridden or registered since 1982. Despite sitting for decades and accumulating rust and dust, the bike is surprisingly in good condition. The engine, however, is stuck and needs some attention.

While the bike doesn’t require a full restoration, certain parts like the engine and drivetrain need some love. The oil has become a gunky mess after years of sitting, and the chain and sprockets are rusted and won’t last much longer. Fortunately, the engine still has some compression and managed to expel a significant amount of gunk from the spark plug hole.

The gas tank is another issue as it’s rusted through and needs a thorough cleaning. Overall, the bike requires various tasks such as opening up the engine, changing the spark plug, de-rusting the fuel tank, cleaning and refurbishing the carburetor, replacing the chain and sprockets, changing the oil, and addressing other small jobs. The suspension and brakes also need attention.

The video runs for more than 30 minutes, but if you’re curious to know if the bike starts, skip ahead to the nine-minute mark. The rest of the video focuses on making the bike rideable. To find out if it ultimately rides, check out the full video!

How To Find Your Hidden Steam Games

Whether you’re tired of looking at a particular Steam game and want to banish it to the ether, you can do so easily from your Steam library menu.

  1. Open the Steam client.

  2. Switch to the Library tab.

  3. Find the game you want to hide in your game list.

  4. Right-click on the game’s name to open its options.

  5. Highlight or select “Manage.”

  6. Select “Hide this game.”

With that quick click, the game is hidden from sight, relegated to the Hidden collection. It’s still technically in your library, but it won’t appear in your game list or in library searches. If you visit the game’s store page, though, it will still show you owning it, just in case you were worried about purchasing it twice by accident.

If you want to restore a hidden game to the regular library, it’s equally simple.

  1. Open the Steam client.

  2. Switch to the Library tab.

  3. Click the View button in the top taskbar.

  4. In the drop-down menu, click “Hidden games.”

  5. In the Hidden collection, right-click on the game you want to unhide.

  6. Highlight or select Manage.

  7. Click “Remove from hidden.”

With that, the game is restored to its prior spot in your library, once again in plain sight and easily accessed. You can hide and unhide games as much as you like, so don’t hesitate to banish a game if it’s annoying you.

Is It Safe to Leave Your Steam Deck Plugged In Overnight?

Valve, the company behind Steam Deck, has not provided any clear guidelines on whether it is safe to leave the device plugged in overnight. However, users on the Steam Deck forums generally advise against making it a habit.

Similar to other portable electronic devices, the Steam Deck’s battery charging process involves reaching 100% charge and then internally disconnecting the power cable. The connection remains disabled until the battery percentage drops to 90%, after which the charging process restarts. Keeping the Steam Deck plugged in like this for prolonged periods, such as overnight, leads to repeated charging and discharging cycles. This can cause unnecessary wear and tear on the battery, reducing its overall lifespan.

The battery usage will vary based on your activities with the Steam Deck. If you are actively using it while plugged in, the console will draw power from the outlet, and the battery will not be affected. However, if you plan to leave the console unused for several days, it is recommended to unplug it and completely power it down. If you intend to use your Steam Deck continuously for multiple days, it is advisable to leave it in sleep mode overnight. Although it may lose some charge, you can easily recharge it while using it.
