Surprisingly, the engine and even the carburetor are in decent condition considering their age. However, the rest of the bike is heavily rusted, bent, broken, or damaged in some way. Despite these challenges, the creator manages to salvage most of the bike by welding solid metal pieces into the areas previously occupied by the rusted parts.

Some parts, like the leg shields, require extensive hammering to restore them to their original shape. The entire restoration process is captured in a 41-minute video. It’s a labor-intensive project but watching the creator’s determination and progress can be highly inspiring for DIY enthusiasts.

Lotus Type 66: Reviving a Forgotten Racer with 830bhp V8

The Lotus Type 66 is the first of a series of exclusive and historically accurate creations based on designs that were never brought to life.

Last year, Autocar reported that the newly established Lotus Advanced Performance division aims to turn these unrealized concepts into reality.

By using modern materials, techniques, and components, Lotus will build limited numbers of these models, based on designs and plans from their archives, although they will come with a hefty price tag.

The Type 66, being the first to be officially unveiled, sets the precedent for how Lotus will approach the creation of these retro-modern vehicles.

The original Type 66 was initially developed by Lotus founder Colin Chapman with the intention of entering it into the Can-Am racing series in 1970.

However, because of Chapman’s focus on Formula 1, the project never went beyond technical drawings and scale models made by Geoff Ferris, who later designed race cars for Brabham and Penske.

If the car had made it onto the track, it would have likely been driven by two-time F1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi, according to Clive Chapman, the son of Colin and managing director of Classic Team Lotus.

He also mentioned that the Type 66 would have shared its design philosophy with the Type 72 F1 car, utilizing side-mounted radiators for improved aerodynamics.

The race car was digitally recreated using 1:4 and 1:10-scale drawings provided by Chapman and modified to meet modern safety standards.

Changes were made to accommodate current regulations, such as onboarding the fuel cell and adding a fixed rollover bar.

Lotus has also made adjustments to improve drivability, including a sequential gearbox with a multi-plate clutch, an anti-stall system, and a reverse gear. Additional features include power steering and a race-honed anti-lock braking system (ABS).

Lotus Introduces Track-Only Type 66 Car with Limited Production for $1.3M

Lotus has unveiled the Type 66, a low-volume track-only car, during Monterey Car Week. The Type 66 is based on lost Lotus designs from 1970, combining the brand’s motorsport heritage with modern technology. Lotus plans to produce only 10 units of the Type 66, each priced at approximately $1.3 million (£1.0 million).

The inspiration for the Type 66 comes from a study commissioned by Lotus founder Colin Chapman for a potential Can-Am race car. Although never developed further at the time, the original drawings and scale models have now been rediscovered and used as the foundation for the Type 66.

The Type 66 features a pushrod V8 engine with Can-Am–inspired air trumpets, producing an impressive 830 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. The car also boasts modern components such as a forged crank, rods, and pistons. Its bodywork is crafted from carbon fiber, and the chassis is made of extruded aluminum sections, bonded joints, and aluminum honeycomb panels. Other modern features include a sequential racing gearbox, ABS braking system, and contemporary safety equipment.

At the unveiling of the Type 66, two notable figures from Lotus history were present: Emerson Fittipaldi, a two-time F1 World Champion, and Clive Chapman, managing director of Classic Team Lotus and son of Colin Chapman. Chapman held the original documents from the design study, making him instrumental in bringing the Type 66 to life. Fittipaldi, who joined Lotus in 1970, would likely have been the driver of the car had it been built back then.

To bring the Type 66 to life, designers used computer software to digitize quarter- and tenth-scale drawings, creating 3D renderings of the car. They also incorporated Colin Chapman’s ideas, including a cockpit enclosure to reduce drag and improve airflow to the rear wing.

The front wing of the Type 66 is designed to channel air from the front of the car, through and underneath the rear wings, generating significant downforce. This concept of porosity, where air travels through the vehicle rather than around it, is a signature element of Lotus vehicle design and is seen in modern Lotus models like the Emira sports car and Evija hypercar.

To assess the track performance of the Type 66, advanced “driver-in-the-loop” technology was utilized to estimate its capabilities on various race tracks, including Laguna Seca, Silverstone, Fuji, and Spa. Lotus claims that the Type 66 matches the performance of a modern GT3 race car and may even outperform it on some circuits.

After its debut at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, the Lotus Type 66 will be showcased on the Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 20.

10 Of The Oldest Military Submarines Still In Service Today

The Type 091, also known as the Han class, was developed during China’s Chairman Mao’s rule in the late 1950s. However, it took over two decades for the first submarine to be launched. The goal was to create a nuclear attack submarine that could rival those of the Soviet Union and the West during the Cold War. However, at that time, there were doubts about its technological capabilities, particularly in terms of meeting thermal performance and sound reduction standards, which are crucial for a submarine’s security as sonar detection is a significant threat.

On paper, the Type 091 was impressive, measuring 98 meters in length, 10 meters in diameter, and capable of reaching a top speed of 25 knots. Its pressurized water reactor was a technological triumph for China during that era, and advanced sonar, reconnaissance, and sound detection equipment were developed without any assistance from the West. For Chairman Mao, it must have been a significant achievement and a demonstration of China’s emerging global power.

A total of five Type 091 submarines were built, with three still in active service. These submarines have the capability to launch various torpedoes, including NATO variants, as China adopted standard calibers. They are also equipped with surface-launched anti-ship cruise missiles, which have a range of 42 kilometers and can reach a top speed of Mach 0.9. Despite undergoing upgrades, these submarines have been reported to experience radiation leakage and continue to have significant noise levels, according to the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence.

Radford & Tanner Foust Break Pikes Peak Hill Climb Class Record

In the 101st running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the Radford Type 62-2 Pikes Peak Special Edition made history over the weekend. Led by experienced race car driver and previous Pikes Peak champion, Tanner Foust, the vehicle not only won the Exhibition Class but also achieved a sub-ten-minute time, a record previously untouched by Foust.

Radford’s triumph was supported by impressive engineering. The Type 62-2 Pikes Peak Edition featured a 710HP supercharged 3.5L V6 DOHC engine, capable of going from 0-60 mph in under 2.2 seconds and reaching a top speed of 160 mph. The lightweight dry body, weighing only 1,898 pounds, was achieved through a full carbon composite monocoque. Additionally, the Radford race version included extensive modifications such as a new underbody design, subframes, suspension, wider body, and a new rear aero and diffuser to deliver outstanding performance on the challenging Pikes Peak terrain.
