Maruti Fronx Is The Quickest Car Under Rs 10 Lakh. But By How Much?

Its turbo-petrol manual variants are quicker to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph than these 5 models we’ve tested under that price bracket

Maruti Fronx

The Maruti Fronx was launched earlier this year as a crossover SUV based on the Maruti Baleno premium hatchback. We recently tested its turbo-petrol manual variant to see its real-world performance. It turns out the Fronx is decently quick and here’s how it compares against the quickest cars – also priced under Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) – that we’ve tested.

Results

0-100 kmph

Maruti Fronx Turbo-Petrol MT

10.38 Seconds

Renault Kiger Turbo-Petrol MT

11.01 Seconds

Maruti Alto K10 MT

12.77 Seconds

Tata Tiago EV

13.43 Seconds

Toyota Glanza MT

13.54 Seconds

Citroen C3 MT

14.32 Seconds

* As Tested

Renault Kiger

  • The Renault Kiger, which comes with a turbo-petrol engine and is priced under Rs 10 lakh, is notably slower to reach 100 kmph.

Maruti Alto K10

  • The Maruti Alto K10 is third on the list, but lags behind the Kiger by a significant margin, taking more than a second longer to touch 100 kmph. Even though it is down on power – with just 67 PS on offer – the lightness of the entry-level hatchback makes it quick on its small wheels.

Tata Tiago EV

  • The only EV in this list is the Tata Tiago EV, which can do the 0-100 kmph sprint in under 13.5 seconds which, interestingly, makes it the quickest EV under Rs 10 lakh.

Toyota Glanza

Citroen C3

  • Lastly, we have the Citroen C3 with a 0-100 kmph run time of over 14 seconds with its 82PS 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine. There is also a 110 PS 1.2-litre turbo-petrol on offer for under Rs 10 lakh, but we have not tested it for its 0-100 kmph time yet.

Maruti Fronx Powertrain Details

Maruti Fronx Turbi-petrol Engine

The Fronx comes with two engine options. The first is a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine which makes 90 PS and 113 Nm. This engine comes paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT.

The other powertrain is on the variant we tested, which is the 1-litre turbo-petrol engine. This unit makes 100 PS and 148 Nm, and is mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Price & Rivals

Maruti Fronx

The Maruti Fronx is priced from Rs 7.46 lakh to Rs 13.13 lakh (ex-showroom) and its turbo-petrol variants start from Rs 9.72 lakh (ex-showroom). The coupe SUV is a rival to subcompact SUVs like the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, Maruti Brezza, and Mahindra XUV300.

This Is How Quick The Turbo Maruti Fronx Is Compared To The Baleno-Glanza Duo

All 3 cars come with similar space, features and cabin experiences, but Fronx’s turbo-petrol makes a big difference in performance

Maruti Fronx vs Toyota Glanza

The Maruti Fronx was launched earlier this year as a coupe-style SUV based on the Maruti Baleno, which is the same as the Toyota Glanza. The Fronx comes with similar features, space, practicality and cabin as the two premium hatchbacks, but offers bigger proportions, beefier coupe styling and most importantly a turbo-petrol engine option. Here, we compare the performance figures of the Fronx with the Glanza to see how much difference the more powerful engine makes and also see if you should consider the bigger Maruti model.

However, the Maruti SUV also gets a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine option that makes 10PS and 35Nm more than the hatchbacks’ engine and also comes with a proper automatic transmission. In our tests, we took the manual variants of both the Fronx and Glanza, and here are the results.

This mid-spec variant of the Fronx will give you the better and more exciting performance of the turbo-petrol engine, but you’ll be compromising on the exterior design, cabin experience and a lot of features. So in this case, it would be better to pick any of the two hatchbacks. However, if you are willing to pay more, the higher-spec variants of the Fronx will be better value for money.

New Mercedes-AMG C43 Sedan Launched In India, Priced at Rs 98 Lakh

The new AMG C43 sedan has been introduced in India at a price of Rs 98 lakh. It features a downsized 2-liter turbo-petrol engine that is more powerful than its predecessor, producing over 400PS.

Mercedes-AMG C 43

  • Unlike its previous version available only as a coupe, the new AMG C43 is now a sedan in India.

  • It features distinctive AMG design elements both inside and outside, including vertical slats on the grille.

  • It is powered by a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine delivering 402PS and 500Nm of torque.

  • The power is transmitted to all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic transmission.

  • The sedan also comes with rear axle steering for easier maneuverability at low speeds.

Mercedes-AMG has launched the latest generation of its entry-level lineup, the Mercedes-AMG C43, in India. Unlike its predecessor, which was available only as a coupe, the new model now comes in a more practical sedan body style, priced at Rs 98 lakh (ex-showroom). Let’s take a look at what this performance sedan has to offer.

AMG Design Elements

Mercedes-AMG C 43 Front

The Mercedes-AMG C43 sedan shares its overall design language with the C Class but incorporates specific AMG design elements. The front features the signature Panamericana grille and a more aggressive bumper design. In terms of side profile, it retains the resemblance to the C-Class while sporting AMG-specific 19-inch alloy wheels.

These include an AMG steering wheel, front sport seats with red stitching and red seatbelts, and an AMG graphics-equipped driver’s display and infotainment system. The sedan is also equipped with a 710W 15-speaker Burmester 3D sound system.

Downsized Engine, Up On Power

Mercedes-AMG C 43 Engine

The new AMG C43 sedan is powered by a downsized 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, delivering an impressive 408PS and 500Nm of torque. It is paired with a 9-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission, enabling the sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in just 4.6 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250kmph.

Compared to its predecessor, which had a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder turbo petrol engine producing 390PS and 520Nm, the new AMG C43’s smaller engine delivers 13PS more power.

The smaller engine also features technology derived from Formula 1, with an electric exhaust gas turbocharger. This turbocharging technology uses a 48V electric motor to provide quick response across the entire rev range. It was the first production-spec car engine to feature this technology.

Enhanced Dynamics & Handling

Mercedes-AMG C 43

The 2023 AMG C43 sedan is equipped with AMG Ride Control steel-spring suspension featuring the Adaptive Damping System. This system adjusts the damping of each wheel based on road conditions and driver’s style. It offers three damping modes: Comfort, Sport, and Sport+.

Furthermore, the AMG C43 comes with a 3-stage AMG parameter steering system that adjusts assistance based on speed and driving mode. At low speeds, assistance is increased for easier maneuvering, while at high speeds, in Sport or Sport+ modes, the steering wheel feedback is enhanced.

Rivals

The Mercedes-AMG C43 performance sedan competes with other sporty sedans like the Audi S5 Sportback and BMW 3 Series M340i, offering slightly more power and luxury.

The Seltos, with the bigger turbo-petrol engine, is quicker, but the old one is still ahead in the quarter-mile run

The 2023 Kia Seltos was launched earlier this year with a new design, a lot of new features, and a big change to its powertrain. The pre-facelift Seltos was offered with a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol unit, which, after the facelift, was replaced by a 1.5-litre turbo unit. We have tested the performance of both versions of the compact SUV with automatic transmissions, a 7-speed dual-clutch setup. But before you look at the results, have a glance at the engine specifications.

The driver assistance systems in the Venue include features such as forward collision warning (for car, pedestrian, and cyclist), lane keep assist and departure warning, driver attention warning, high-beam assist, lane following assist, and leading vehicle lane departure alert.

However, the Venue’s ADAS suite does not include automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, indicating that it adheres to ADAS Level 1 technology.

Note: Each variant listed above, except Venue S(O), is also available in a dual-tone exterior for an extra Rs 15,000.

This new transmission option has made the Venue N Line more affordable by up to Rs 80,000. The Venue N Line is Hyundai’s sportier version with the 1-litre turbo-petrol engine.

The regular Venue offers other engine options, including a 1.2-litre petrol engine (83PS and 114Nm) mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine (116PS and 250Nm) paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The top-spec SX(O) variant of the Venue does not offer the naturally aspirated petrol engine option.

Rivals

The Hyundai Venue competes with the Maruti Brezza, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon facelift, Mahindra XUV300, Renault Kiger, and Nissan Magnite. The Venue N Line, on the other hand, competes with the Turbo Sport variants of the Mahindra XUV300.

Kia Seltos vs Skoda Kushaq vs Volkswagen Taigun: Turbo DCT Claimed Mileage Comparison

All three come with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a 7-speed DCT, but how do their differences affect their efficiency?

Kia Seltos vs Skoda Kushaq vs Volkswagen Taigun

The Kia Seltos recently went through a midlife update, which included a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine replacing the previous 1.4-litre turbo unit. Although the automatic transmission option remains a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), this new powertrain puts it on par with the Skoda Kushaq-Volkswagen Taigun duo. These three SUVs all feature a 1.5-litre turbo engine with a 7-speed DCT, but there are some notable differences in their performance and efficiency.

Based on the table above, the Taigun with its turbo-petrol engine and DCT option offers the highest mileage among the three, while the Seltos is the least fuel-efficient. The reason behind the higher claimed mileage of the Skoda-VW duo could be attributed to two factors:

  1. The Seltos’ turbo unit produces more power and torque, which increases fuel consumption and subsequently leads to lower efficiency.

  2. Skoda and Volkswagen have equipped their turbo-petrol engines with active cylinder deactivation technology (ACT), which shuts off two cylinders under low-stress scenarios, thereby resulting in higher mileage.

It’s worth noting that while the new Kia Seltos’ turbo-DCT is not as efficient as the VW-Skoda powertrain, it is more economical than its previous turbo-DCT option despite the improved performance.

Which Variants Get These Powertrain Options?

Kia offers the turbo-DCT combination only on the higher-spec HTX+, GTX+, and X-Line variants of the Seltos. The only other transmission option available for this powerful engine is the 6-speed iMT (manual without a clutch pedal) with the HTX+ trim.

Volkswagen Taigun

In the case of Skoda and VW, only Skoda has provided the mid-spec Ambition and top-spec Style trims of the Kushaq with the aforementioned combination, but only in the sunroof-equipped Style variant. The Volkswagen Taigun is available with this engine-gearbox option in the Performance Line variants – GT, GT+, and GT Edge. Additionally, the 150PS turbo-petrol engine also has a proper 6-speed manual option.

Prices Of Turbo Variants

The prices of the Seltos turbo range from Rs 19.20 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. On the other hand, the prices of the Kushaq and Taigun turbo-petrol variants fall between Rs 16.79 lakh and Rs 19.69 lakh. Not only is the Seltos the most expensive among the three, but it has also become the priciest SUV in its segment.

The dashboard of the facelifted Kia Seltos has been redesigned to incorporate the new integrated displays and climate control panel. The rest of the console design remains the same, with its driver-oriented layout. The GT Line variant of the SUV retains the all-black cabin theme.

All caught up on features

While the Kia Seltos set a new standard for features when it was launched in 2019, it has since been surpassed by newer competitors. The facelift adds various equipment that the Seltos needed to catch up, such as the panoramic sunroof, 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, and dual-zone climate control. The GT Line variants will exclusively come with dual exhaust tips.

The major addition is the advanced driver assist systems (ADAS), which includes 17 features like autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, high beam assist, and lane assist. The safety features continue to include six airbags, a 360-degree camera, ISOFIX, and electronic stability control (ESC).
