Jeep Wrangler Goes Electric Only In 2028, New Dodge Durango Due In 2025

Stellantis and the UAW reached a tentative agreement for a new contract on October 28. UAW members working at Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler still need to ratify the deal, but notable news regarding vehicle production has slipped out in the process. In short, we’re seeing timelines for popular SUVs that take us through the current lifecycle and into the next generation, revealing some electrification details in the process.

2024 Jeep Wrangler

We start with the Jeep Wrangler. Built at the Stellantis factory in Toledo, Ohio, the current JL generation will remain in production until 2028. An upgrade to the Wrangler 4xe hybrid is scheduled for 2025. However, the interesting part comes with the next-generation off-roader. The UAW deal reveals that production for the J70 Wrangler, starting in 2028, will feature two electric powertrains. One will be fully electric, while the other will use a combustion engine as a range extender. This confirms previous reports about the next Wrangler being fully electric, without any mention of a pure combustion model or a plug-in hybrid version.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer

On the other end of the size spectrum, the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will also continue with the current model until 2028. A mid-cycle refresh is expected in 2025, and the UAW agreement reveals an electric version with a range-extending engine will be introduced that year. A fully electric Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer is listed for 2027. Unlike the Wrangler, there is no mention of a next-generation model or any plans beyond 2028. However, a second refresh for combustion models is mentioned in 2027.

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe 30th Anniversary Edition

As for the Grand Cherokee, the current generation two-row model will continue production until 2027, while the three-row version will be produced until 2028. A mid-cycle refresh is scheduled for 2024, and a next-generation model is expected in 2027, featuring both battery and combustion powertrains.

2024 Dodge Durango Citadel

The Dodge Durango, built alongside the Grand Cherokee at Stellantis’ Detroit Assembly Complex, will remain in production until 2025 for the current generation, with the next-generation model set for 2026. Similar to the Grand Cherokee, it will be available with both combustion and battery-electric powertrains.

It’s important to note that while these details appear to be official, the automakers themselves have not made any official announcements. We reached out to representatives from Dodge and Jeep for confirmation and comments on the information in the UAW agreement, but both companies declined to comment.

These are not the only details leaked by the UAW regarding Stellantis. The proposal also mentions the reopening of the former Jeep Cherokee plant in Belvidere, Illinois, where an unspecified mid-size truck will be manufactured. This suggests the possibility of a smaller Ram truck, as Jeep already produces the Gladiator. Ram, however, did not comment on this report, similar to the SUV news.

YouTube Starts Global Crackdown on Ad Blockers

On October 13, the developers of AdBlock Plus were unable to provide a solution for YouTube’s new problem, according to a blog post on their website. As for uBlock Origin, users on Reddit have reported that the Firefox version of the extension still functions, but it is advised to regularly update the extension and its blocklist to ensure effectiveness. The Reddit post also mentions that YouTube updates their detection scripts twice a day, so users should be prepared for frequent filter updates.

Another post on Reddit suggests that uBlock Origin is also effective at blocking ads on the Brave browser, including the mobile version. The same post recommends using NewPipe for Android, a free and open-source app that provides an ad-free YouTube experience. However, it is important to download NewPipe from official sources such as their website or pages on GitHub or F-Droid, as versions on the Google Play Store may contain advertisements.

For desktop users, there is a workaround discovered by AI developer Shanaj Raj. By requesting the video’s embed code through the Share menu, users can access an ad-free version of the video on a per-video basis. It is important to note that these workarounds are unofficial and may cease to work at any moment. The most reliable way to enjoy an ad-free experience on YouTube is through a Premium subscription.

The development process of the Lamina GTX line involved gathering input and insights from women in REV’IT!’s Design and Research and Development departments, as well as their brand ambassadors. This inclusive approach resulted in a suit that was “designed by dialogue.”

Both the jacket and pants are versatile all-season gear, offering ventilation and complete waterproofing. They can be connected together using short and long attachment zippers.

The REV’IT! Lamina GTX Ladies jacket is constructed with a two-layered Gore-Tex laminate fabric that provides breathability and protection from rain. It incorporates 200 denier and 400 denier Gore-Tex fabric, as well as neoprene for added durability.

Sondors Is Currently Under Investigation By The Better Business Bureau

It’s October 30, 2023, and if you’ve been waiting for a Sondors Metacycle, things aren’t looking great. While manufacturers big and small experienced supply chain-related delays and hiccups, particularly in the immediate wake of the global pandemic, circumstances seem to have hit the Sondors Metacycle line particularly hard.

For those unfamiliar, Metacycle was supposed to be the first-ever electric motorcycle from e-bike company Sondors. When the firm first announced the Metacycle in 2021, its design immediately drew attention.

Preliminary specifications looked almost too good, including a top speed of 80 mph, range of 80 miles (or thereabouts) on a single four-hour charge, a removable battery for ease of charging off the bike, and a 200-pound curb weight. All that, and the bike was supposed to cost about $5,000. Excellent news if true, right?

Then came the delays. By September 2021, the company announced that deliveries were pushed back until Q4 of 2021. As the year 2022 dawned, still no Metacycle preorders had found their way into owner hands. The happy first delivery dates were then pushed back to June 2022.

Finally, Sondors announced that Metacycle deliveries were beginning in November 2022, with a goal of delivering all its US preorders by the end of that year.

While some customers received their Metacycles, if the firm’s Better Business Bureau listing is anything to go by, nowhere near all of the US units were delivered. As of October 30, 2023, Sondors Premium Electric Bikes carries an F rating from the Better Business Bureau. It is not BBB Accredited. The Customer Complaints summary lists 201 total complaints in the last three years, with 141 complaints closed in the last 12 months.

We’ll note that this math seems incorrect, however, because RideApart conducted a review of BBB complaints with a status of “Unanswered” and that explicitly mentioned the Metacycle.

We found a total of 83 Metacycle-related complaints marked “Unanswered,” with the most recent one filed on September 30, 2023 and the oldest one filed on January 13, 2023. Many of these complaints contained sensitive information (including payment information) that the BBB censored before publishing them on its webpage.

A cursory review of Sondors’ BBB complaints page shows that most if not all complaints filed prior to January 2023 have been answered.

What Do the Unanswered BBB Complaints About the Sondors Metacycle Say?

Of the 83 unanswered complaints filed, all but eight told variations on the same story. Complainants said that they’d preordered a Metacycle, not received the bike or otherwise changed their minds, and then attempted to obtain a refund from Sondors. Some then said that they were given the runaround before eventually not receiving either a refund or further communication. Others simply received no communication, regardless of whether they e-mailed or called.

Some tried to sort things out with third-party companies that Sondors had contracts with, including the payments service Partial.ly and the helpdesk service Zendesk. In those cases, complainants also said they had no luck.

The amounts these customers said that they prepaid varied, because promotional pricing on the Metacycle has varied since preorders were opened. Many customers recounted being asked to pay one price for the bike, then later being asked to pay $700 or even $800 as an additional shipping charge when they contacted Sondors to ask when they could expect to receive their Metacycles.

What About Those Eight Complaints That Weren’t About Not Receiving Metacycles, Refunds, Or Good Communication?

One customer alleged false claims on the part of Sondors with regard to the Metacycle’s specs. As many have noted, the specs changed from what Sondors had initially announced and what eventually rolled out to the public.

This customer was particularly upset about two things: That the battery on the real-world Metacycle is not removable, and that the bike is significantly heavier than the 200 pounds that was originally promised.

The Sondors website states (as of October 30, 2023) that the bike weighs 300 pounds. This customer bought the bike thinking that they could remove the battery and bring it to their apartment to charge. Since receiving the bike, they do not think that it’s feasible to carry a 300+ pound bike up six flights of stairs because the original specs were inaccurate.

The other six unanswered complaints were about Metacycles that were received, but that needed either warranty service or parts. In all cases, customers noted a by now familiar pattern of communication problems in getting their issues resolved.

The Better Business Bureau is currently investigating Sondors Premium Electric Bikes as of September 2023

According to the BBB, it has opened an investigation into Sondors Premium Electric Bikes due to the number of inquiries it has received. On September 12, 2023, it attempted to contact Sondors, but did not receive a response. RideApart has reached out to the Better Business Bureau and Sondors and will update this post if we receive further information.

There’s More, And Worse

In a bombshell piece of reporting from our colleagues at Elektrek, sources at the factory in China where Sondors manufactures its Metacycles told a tale of unpaid bills, unmet deliveries, and thousands of abandoned bikes sitting in warehouses. The source(s) provided that publication with documents and photos to back their claims and spoke on condition of anonymity due to understandable fears of retaliation.

It’s a breathtaking story, and one that’s well worth reading. You can also see the extremely sad photos of crated bikes sitting in a warehouse, waiting to be shipped. We’ll include the link in our Sources so you can go read Elektrek’s investigation.

How Did Honda’s CR Electric Prototype Perform at Its First Race Weekend?

In October 2023, Honda announced that it would be participating in its first race weekend with the CR electric motocross prototype before the end of the month. The bike, ridden by former AMA Pro Motocross 250 champion Trey Canard, competed in round eight of the D.I.D. All Japan Motocross Championship at Offroad Village Saitama in Japan.

The race weekend took place on October 28 and 29, 2023. The CR electric prototype successfully qualified, practiced, and raced as planned. However, the results on race day were a mixed bag.

In the morning practice session, Canard was the second fastest overall. This was a promising result for a wildcard entry on a prototype machine. It set the stage for the race heats later in the day.

In Heat One, Canard performed well on the CR prototype and finished in second place. He was only 0.7 seconds behind the winner, which was a commendable result for the first race.

Unfortunately, Canard had a crash with fellow competitor Jay Wilson in the second heat, forcing them to retire from that heat. Nevertheless, Canard got back on the bike for the third and final heat of the day. He managed to take the holeshot but crashed out due to the challenging track conditions.

The goal of Honda Racing Corporation was to use this race as a learning and development opportunity rather than focusing solely on competition. From that perspective, the weekend can be considered a success. However, the team’s performance, including grabbing two out of three holeshots and finishing second in one heat, can also be seen as positive from a competitive standpoint.

A YouTuber named TRP Adventure was present at the event and shared video footage of the qualifying session. In the video, Canard and the CR prototype demonstrated impressive performance.

Understanding the Importance of Right-To-Repair

The Right to Repair Act, which was signed in California in October 2023, aims to expand the protection provided by the state’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act. This act, established over five decades ago, ensures that products purchased in California are covered by their warranties and allows for necessary repairs to be made. If the same issue persists after a reasonable number of repair attempts, the manufacturer is required to either refund the buyer or provide a replacement.

California’s implementation of the Right to Repair Act goes even further. Manufacturers are now obligated to supply the parts, equipment, and manuals necessary for repairing products for a specified period of time, either three or seven years depending on the value of the product.

The essence of the Right to Repair philosophy is that consumers should have the right to expect their products to function as intended for their entire lifespan. While issues and defects may arise, it should not be an arduous process to have them addressed and resolved. In some cases, legislation such as the UK’s right-to-repair laws allow for consumers to perform simpler repairs themselves, while ensuring that more complex repairs can be carried out by professionals with access to the necessary parts.

Harley Reports 16 Percent Drop In Motorcycle Sales Worldwide In Q3 Of 2023

On October 26, 2023, Harley-Davidson released its financial results for the third quarter of 2023. The company reported an increase of 25 percent in CVO retail sales, which was seen as positive news. However, a closer examination of the revenue and motorcycle sales figures revealed a less optimistic outlook.

Harley-Davidson divides its reporting into three segments: Harley-Davidson Motor Company (excluding LiveWire), Harley-Davidson Financial Services, and LiveWire. This reporting structure has been in place since LiveWire became its own separate company in 2022.

Combined, these segments form Harley-Davidson Incorporated, which reports its Consolidated Financial Results. In comparison to the third quarter of 2022, the Motor Company reported a 24 percent decrease in profits. As a result, stock shares fell by 11 percent in response to this news, according to Reuters.

Turning our attention to motorcycle sales, Harley-Davidson reported a decline in retail sales across all geographic regions for the third quarter of 2023. Worldwide sales decreased by 16 percent compared to the same period last year.

Here is a breakdown of the sales by region: North America experienced a 15 percent decrease, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa saw a 13 percent decline (EMEA), Asia Pacific sales dropped by 24 percent, and Latin America experienced an 11 percent decrease in the third quarter of 2023.

It’s worth noting that LiveWire, Harley-Davidson’s electric motorcycle, is reported differently than its traditional motorcycles. LiveWire’s figures represent “Electric Motorcycle Shipments” rather than sales. In the third quarter of 2023, a total of 50 LiveWire electric motorcycles were shipped, marking a 76 percent decrease from the 206 shipments in the same period of 2022.

Considering LiveWire is still in its early stages and new technologies often face challenges, it is important to keep expectations in check. Additionally, Harley-Davidson only recently started selling its bikes in Europe, a market where electric motorbikes have gained more acceptance.

While electric motorcycles have gained popularity in Europe and Asia, the adoption rate in the US has been slower. As LiveWire establishes itself in Europe and other international markets, particularly with the S2 Del Mar model, it is hoped that it will find a more receptive audience.
