Lucid primes £40,000 Tesla Model 3, Model Y rivals

American EV maker Lucid will launch within the UK throughout the subsequent two years earlier than increasing its vary with an reasonably priced mid-sized mannequin line to rival the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

Lucid launched the Air saloon in 2021 and earlier this month revealed its long-awaited SUV sibling, the Gravity, that are each priced from round $80,000 (£64,000) and aimed on the luxurious finish of the market.

But the following mannequin line to be launched will take the model boldly into extra mainstream territory, with CEO Peter Rawlinson suggesting to Autocar a beginning worth of “about $50,000” (£40,000) and laying naked his ambition to drastically improve Lucid’s gross sales volumes.

“We have to go with volume, because that’s what we’re about,” he mentioned, explaining that Lucid needed to launch the high-end Air and Gravity first due to the prices concerned in establishing a brand new automotive firm.

Details of what to anticipate from the following Lucid stay underneath wraps, however Rawlinson did recommend that it could seem a lot sooner than has beforehand been reported.

He mentioned: “I’ve formally stated mid-late decade, and that has been completely misquoted as the end of the decade – 2030. What I mean is ‘not 2025’. It’s a few years away, but it’s close. It takes three and a half years to do a car, and we’ve started… and that wasn’t yesterday.”

Rawlinson – who beforehand led growth of the Tesla Model S whereas serving as chief engineer on the pioneering EV maker – additionally revealed to Autocar that the brand new merchandise are designed to tackle his former employer.

He mentioned: “The mid-sized [line] goes to be overtly a Tesla competitor – Model 3, Model Y. This is the primary time I’ve ever mentioned it: we’re going to compete in that market – high-volume family car.

“And how can we compete? Because we’ve got the most advanced technology, which means we can go farther with less battery, and the battery is the most high-cost item of an electric car. So if you can go a certain distance with less battery, you can make that car more cheaply than anyone else.”

The Lucid Gravity Will Join The Growing Electric SUV Market

Two And Three-row Options Available

Not many electric vehicles offer up to seven seats, but Lucid is set to enter that segment with its upcoming SUV, the Lucid Gravity. As Lucid describes the Gravity: it’s “large on the inside, manageable on the outside.”

Enough Room For The Whole Family

There is enough to worry about when packing up the car for a family road trip. The last thing you want to mull over is whether someone will have to be left behind. Three-row electric vehicles are aiming to solve that issue, and the Lucid Gravity is the first seven-seater, albeit as an option, the company has to offer. The electric SUV will be available in two seating options: a two and a three-row model.

Additionally, the vehicle’s cargo space with the third and second row of seats folded is over 112 cubic feet, according to Lucid.

How The Lucid Gravity Compares To The Competition

While there isn’t a huge market for three-row electric vehicles, there are a few currently available or soon-to-be-hitting dealership floors that make a splash, such as the Kia EV9, for instance. Unlike vans such as the Volkswagen ID. Buzz or massive electric SUVs like the Rivian R1S, Lucid says its first-ever 100 percent electric three-rower will offer a more compact exterior structure and better overall maneuverability.

In internal tests, the Gravity model hit a drag lower than fellow three-row vehicles, according to Lucid. Starting at under $80,000, as Lucid announced, the Gravity’s price fits competitively into the three-row electric vehicle market — especially considering its range. Similar three-rowers can exceed $100,000, like the Tesla Model X, which has an EPA estimated range of 348 miles on a single charge.

Fast Charging Propels The All-Electric Lucid Gravity SUV Forward

Not many electric vehicles can brag about their range and longevity transforming the EV market — and even fewer can boast about minimizing time spent recharging in parking lots. Lucid has been at the forefront of such ventures. The Gravity is confirmed to have 900-volt architecture that ramp up recharging times. In just 15 minutes, drivers can reach up to 200 miles of range on a fast charger.

Peter Rawlinson, Lucid Motors CEO And CTO, Said:

Lucid’s innovative proprietary EV powertrain technology and our holistic approach to vehicle engineering already enabled the Air sedan to redefine what was thought possible from a luxury sports sedan. With Gravity, these innovations evolved, and our next-generation technology is applied with even greater effect, resulting in an electric SUV that can achieve over 440 miles of range with a battery pack a little more than half the size of some of our battery-hungry competitors.

Lighter Batteries Mean More Sustainable Design

According to Lucid, the compact battery technology also adds sustainable elements with fewer metal and mineral resources used in the production process. The extent of Lucid’s resource-saving method will be fully realized once the Gravity goes into production in late 2024 and additional sustainability details are available. The battery pack is one of several eco-centric architecture and design elements throughout the vehicle.

Rawling added:

When we say we’re here to advance the technology, this is what we mean — this is sustainability in action.

Here’s How Lucid Will Move Beyond Its Current, High-Priced Lineup

Lucid Motors has, up to this point, been an expensive electric car brand on the market. With most models outpacing even Tesla in MSRP, Lucid hasn’t seen the success it hoped for in the space. After all, with many auto shoppers keeping their cars longer, spending less to upgrade, or in some cases, downgrading their vehicles to save money each month, Lucid Motors sits at a crossroads.

Of course, the company will never be “cheap,” but it has strategized towards being more attainable for mid-range shoppers. Many electric car shoppers want something for under $50,000 without compromising quality or performance, and Lucid Motors has considered this.

Moreover, with models being introduced to the market, like the 2025 Gravity electric crossover, with an expected MSRP of $80,000, and the Lucid Air seeing a price cut to around $77,000, it’s clear the brand has a far way to go in terms of affordability: but hey, at least they’re trying. Lucid tends to fall into the top-tier luxury market for EVs, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

But, in today’s automotive space, super high price tags may mean smaller revenue reports each quarter. People aren’t spending what they used to on their vehicles, electric or not. Through mass production of batteries and increased factory productivity, Lucid Motors has a lot planned for the next few years. We’ll dive into the further below.

Ahead of the pack, the Lucid Air is the ultimate EV that has in it to take on and take down the competition.

Price Cuts Could ‘Cut It’ For Lucid Motors

Lucid Air Touring on a desert road
Lucid
  • Lucid Motors has slashed pricing on existing Air models and plans to release its Gravity crossover for ~$80,000.

With Lucid Motors setting its sights on better pricing in the next few years, the company has made a cultural shift from top-line pricing to bringing things down a bit for consumers. In 2023, we saw the Lucid Air get a slight price reduction ranging from $5,000 to $12,400, depending on the model. The Lucid Air Touring, for example, saw amazing incentives with this change, leading to increased customer traction. This was an industry-wide trend for this year, and it seems to have inspired the brand to focus more on releasing cars under $100,000 moving forward.

The current 2023 Lucid Air Pure RWD, starting at a comfortable price of $77,400, puts the brand closer to some of the competition. We’re also seeing future models, like the 2025 Gravity, be expected to have ~$80,000 starting prices, which is a lot better than the $100k+ Lucid is notorious for.

Less Is More: Here’s How A Cheaper Set Of Releases Gives Lucid Motors An Advantage

Lucid Motors has seen success with its Air models, especially once the brand cut the price across trim levels for this year. We saw Tesla do the same thing for its popular models, including Model 3 and Y, bringing more customers to its dealerships and making more total sales.

By cutting Air sedans by up to $12,400, you have a new spark of interest from the general public, even if it initially doesn’t ‘look great’ to shareholders and investors. We did see Lucid have a market tumble after slashing prices, but it has since stabilized.

If Lucid can start to creep closer to $65,000 for its new and existing models, that could put it in a better market position heading into 2024, 2025, and the 2030s. Lucid seems to be working on a pickup truck as well, so that has the potential to be a more affordable model in the lineup.

Lucid Motors Set To Diversify Its Battery Production

Lucid Gravity
Lucid Motors
  • To make cheaper EVs, Lucid plans to expand its production to Saudi Arabia and China.
  • The brand has also collaborated with companies including Aston Martin, Mercedes, and Geely.

One of the more exciting aspects of Lucid Motor’s plans to become cheaper in the future is by diversifying its battery production. Working with Panasonic to create batteries for its vehicles has proven good for the brand. However, Lucid has also partnered with Aston Martin, Mercedes, and Chinese automaker Geely and increased its production facilities worldwide. Most notably, Lucid Motors has pledged to construct manufacturing facilities in Saudi Arabia and China, targeting annual production capacities of 150,000 vehicles.

More Production Facilities = Cheaper Production Costs

Adding to our previous point, Lucid Motors has seen major strides toward autonomy in the global auto market, with plans to add facilities in Saudi Arabia and China. Current models are designed in California and manufactured at Lucid’s factory in Arizona. Up until now, this has been an okay strategy, although the Arizona plant can only make so many vehicles at a time.

Aware of this, Lucid has promised to increase production to make much cheaper EVs one day. We’re already seeing this with the all-new Gravity model.

Lucid Plans To Produce A $50,000 EV Someday

Lucid Air Electric Saloon Heading to UK Market by 2025

American electric vehicle (EV) company Lucid plans to enter the UK market in approximately two years, once it completes development programs for new models.

Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson revealed at the LA motor show, where the company unveiled its new Gravity SUV, that the firm needs at least 18 months to prepare for right-hand drive production.

The increased demand for premium electric vehicles, such as the Lucid Air, in specific European markets is a primary motivator for Lucid. However, the company’s current focus is on bringing the Gravity SUV to production and developing subsequent models.

Rawlinson emphasized the significance of the German and UK markets, stating that they are significantly larger than any other country when it comes to luxury EVs. He outlined the challenges of preparing for right-hand drive production and the ongoing prioritization of the Gravity SUV’s development.

Additionally, he mentioned that Lucid’s mid-sized models are scheduled to be available by around 2027, with an estimated starting price of $50,000, and indicated that development is well underway for these models.

When questioned about the possibility of offering the Air in its left-hand-drive form in the UK, similar to Tesla’s approach with the Model S, Rawlinson dismissed the idea, citing low demand and high costs associated with implementing such a strategy. He expressed concern about meeting customer needs with such a limited market impact.

2025 Lucid Gravity Promises Up to 440 Miles of Range, Sub-$80K Starting Price

After years of teasers, Lucid on Thursday finally revealed its first SUV, the Gravity. The all-electric utility vehicle promises a maximum range of over 440 miles and a starting price under $80,000, with production expected to begin in late 2024.

Lucid says the Gravity is a luxury electric SUV without compromise. Inside you’ll find seating for up to seven people or, with the second and third rows folded, more than 112.0 cubic feet of storage space available. The Gravity can handle over 1,500 pounds of payload, and tow up to 6,000 pounds. Without a trailer attached, Lucid claims the Gravity can sprint to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.

LM23_E_Gravity-Airstream-profile_8R0A9131

That sports-car-like acceleration is thanks to a new platform developed from the ground up based on the company’s 900-volt electrical architecture. Lucid describes the battery pack as smaller, lighter, and more sustainable, capable of adding up to 200 miles of range in roughly 15 minutes. It’s connected to in-house designed electric motors the company claims are the most power-dense currently in production.

The Gravity can impress off-road, too, with an optional air suspension system Lucid calls Zero Gravity. It can automatically raise and lower itself based on various terrain needs, according to the company. For those who would rather adjust ride height manually, the system offers the ability to do so.

Lucid Motors Embraces Tesla’s NACS Charging Plug for Electric Vehicles

Lucid Motors has decided to adopt NACS as the standard charging plug for electric vehicles (EVs), bringing it one step closer to becoming the dominant EV connector in North America. Earlier this year, SAE International, a consortium of engineers responsible for setting standards in various industries including automotive, endorsed NACS over CCS as the preferred charging standard. Leading automakers like Ford, GM, and Subaru have also committed to using this plug. As more vehicles rely on NACS, it becomes more cost-effective to build additional charging stations nationwide. Additionally, NACS is seen as a more reliable standard compared to CCS, which could eventually fade away as NACS expands.

This development is particularly beneficial for Tesla, who originally created NACS for their EVs, citing its simple and efficient design. By making the charging connector open source for all vehicles, Tesla’s strategic move seems to be paying off, as even their strongest competitors, like Lucid Motors, are now adopting this plug. Lucid Motors, however, is not framing this change as a victory for Tesla, but rather as a triumph for the entire EV industry. Peter Rawlinson, CEO of Lucid Motors, believes that a unified charging standard, supported by the widespread deployment of high-voltage charging stations, will play a crucial role in encouraging American consumers to embrace electric vehicles.

Why The Lucid Air Is Currently The Best EV You Can Buy

As electric vehicles have gained ground in the automobile market nowadays, the Lucid Air emerged as a true game changer that offers a combination of style, power, and technology. The Air, a luxurious electric sedan by Lucid Motors in Silicon Valley, was the most anticipated EV in recent years.

One trivial about the lucid air is that the car has exterior dimensions similar to a Mercedes E-Class while offering more interior space than an S-Class. In particular, the passengers in the rear are treated to a generous amount of legroom, more so than other vehicles in its class. This is primarily attributed to the sedan layout of the vehicle that allows the designers to extend the second-row seats further to the back.

Lucid’s commitment to offering a spacious and well-rounded experience does not only apply to the passages but also to their cargo. Incorporating a miniaturized EV drivetrain results in ample additional space within the vehicle. This approach to engineering leaves a generous 739 liters of available luggage space, which stands out as the best of its class.

2025 Lucid Gravity Will Debut At LA Auto Show, Production Begins Late 2024

In September 20, 2020, Lucid announced that they will be releasing an SUV called Gravity. However, not much has been revealed about the Gravity since then. But now, Lucid has made an announcement through their social media that Gravity will “make contact” on November 16, just in time for the Los Angeles Auto Show.

According to the teaser post, production of the Lucid Gravity will start in late 2024. So, there is still some time before people can get behind the wheel of this SUV. Previously, Lucid had mentioned that they will unveil the Gravity in 2023 and start production in 2024. With this teaser, the timeframe seems to have narrowed down.

The teaser photo does not reveal much that we haven’t seen before. It shows a slim horizontal taillight on a wide rear gate with a narrower greenhouse above. In a teaser video released in April 2023, we got a clear view of the electric SUV in action, but not from all angles. However, from what we have seen so far, there is a definite resemblance to Lucid’s other model, the Air.
