House of Lords to Examine UK’s Plan to Transition to Electric Vehicles

The House of Lords’ Environment and Climate Change Committee has initiated an inquiry to investigate how the UK government intends to achieve its goal of decarbonising cars and vans within the next 12 years.

The inquiry aims to identify the primary barriers to reducing emissions from private transportation, as well as understand the costs and potential benefits associated with the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles in the UK.

Furthermore, the committee seeks to assess the progress made thus far towards the 2030 and 2035 milestones, in which sales of new hybrid cars will also be prohibited.

Committee chair Baroness Kate Parminter stated, “The time has come for action. We cannot achieve net-zero without individuals making changes to our lives, how we travel, and what we buy. The use of electric vehicles for passenger transport will be part of that, and the government has committed to ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030.”

The committee has invited the public to provide evidence regarding the government’s approach to the 2030 and 2035 targets, the electric vehicle market, the experience of purchasing an electric vehicle, the disposal of electric vehicles at the end of their life, infrastructure issues at both national and regional levels, and international perspectives.

The call for evidence includes several questions, such as whether the 2030 and 2035 targets are realistic and achievable, and whether they are incentivising the growth of the electric vehicle market. The complete list of questions can be found here.

These targets have gained significant attention in recent months, with prominent newspapers and business secretary Kemi Badenoch scrutinising the phase-out. Badenoch is reportedly seeking to persuade cabinet ministers to ease the incoming zero emission vehicle mandate, which will require that 22% of all new vehicle sales be electric from 2024 and increase annually thereafter, in order to protect the UK’s declining automotive industry.

The deadline for submitting evidence to the committee is Friday 15 September.

Toyota Corolla Crashes Into Second Floor Of House, Police Suspect Intentional Act

A car crashing into a house is not unusual, but when it ends up on the second floor, it becomes a strange incident that leaves people wondering how and why it happened. This week, residents in Lewiston, Pennsylvania, were puzzled when a car crashed onto someone’s roof. However, the police believe that this crash was intentional.

The crash involved a gray 2006 Toyota Corolla, which destroyed a corner of the house containing a bedroom and a dormer window. The car came to rest partially inside the house and on the roof of the front porch. Emergency services arrived at the scene and found the homeowner uninjured, but the driver, Evan Miller, was transported to the hospital. The rescue team helped stabilize the house by adding structural support columns and a tarp to protect it from the weather.

The Pennsylvania State Police investigated the crash and determined that it was not an accident. They charged Miller with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of five to 20 years. It is unclear if Miller knew the homeowners or if he intentionally crashed his car into the house or was attempting a different kind of stunt.

The police believe that Miller hit a culvert underneath the house’s driveway, causing the Corolla to go airborne and crash into the second floor. The rise and elevation of the culvert were apparently sufficient to clear the vehicles in the driveway and provide enough height for the car to reach the second floor.

Interestingly, this is not the first time a Toyota Corolla has crashed into a house. In a recent incident in North Point, Florida, a delivery driver crashed a Corolla into a house after running a stop sign. The car also went airborne but caused minimal damage to the house. The homeowner, who happened to be recording a sewing tutorial video at the time, captured the accident on camera.

VW Beetle Camper Is Part Car, Part Log Cabin

Motorhomes provide travelers with a house on the road. But what if you have more of a rustic personal aesthetic? Check out this Volkswagen Beetle “Holzhaus,” which roughly translates to log cabin or chalet. The weird rig is currently for sale in Italy.

This log cabin on wheels started as a 1970 VW Beetle 1302 (this model was the Super Beetle in the United States. A group of Alpine craftsmen added the wood body on top of the original chassis in 1995. They even carved the lumber by hand for the interior and exterior, according to the listing.

Update: Aston Martin partners with Lucid for 2025 electric SUV

Aston Martin has announced a partnership with Lucid to develop their 2025 electric SUV. As part of the agreement, Aston Martin will have access to Lucid’s electric drive units. These units integrate the motor, invertor, and transmission and boast a power density of 9hp per kg. This is more than double Tesla’s power density and eight times that of Hyundai’s motors. Additionally, Lucid is working on motors for racing that have an impressive 17hp per kg.

Aston Martin’s electric cars will utilize four motors, potentially reaching power outputs of up to 1500bhp. Lucid CEO and Chief Technology Officer, Peter Rawlinson, highlighted the difference in their approach: “Aston will use four motors, we’re three. Aston Martin is taking it to the next level.” Aston Martin’s four motor technology will feature a twin-motor front axle that will be unique to their vehicles.

Lucid will also supply battery cells and modules, which Aston Martin will incorporate into a battery pack of their own design. All components will be manufactured at Lucid’s factory in Arizona and then shipped to the UK.

Rawlinson noted that the technology is derived from Lucid’s Air model but with significant software changes. The main differences lie in thermal integration and battery layout. Aston Martin’s technical chief, Roberto Fedeli, aims to have the first electric Aston drivetrain operational on a test bench by the end of the year and a prototype running on the roads by early 2024.

The powertrain will be installed in a “fully flexible BEV platform, modular in height and wheelbase” that is designed to endure until the 2030s, according to Fedeli. This platform will allow Aston Martin to create a sports car that is 2cm lower than their current Aston Martin Vantage, thanks to the compact size and design of Lucid’s cells. Fedeli emphasized the importance of maintaining Aston Martin’s tradition of producing low, sports cars.

However, Aston Martin’s first electric vehicle will not be a sports car but an electric SUV crossover, as hinted in a teaser sketch released alongside the news about the partnership with Lucid. It is expected that an electric GT model will follow by 2030, but for now, the focus is on the SUV crossover.
