Hyundai Venue Surpasses Tata Nexon as the Second Best-Selling Sub-4m SUV in August 2023

The Nexon suffered the highest month-on-month loss in August 2023 sales, likely because customers are awaiting the launch of the facelift this month

In August 2023, the Maruti Brezza retained its title as the best-selling subcompact SUV, followed by the Hyundai Venue. These were the only two SUVs that sold more than 10,000 units in August. However, the overall sub-4m SUV segment experienced a decline of 9.4% compared to the previous month, with the Tata Nexon being the most affected. Let’s take a closer look at the sales figures of sub-4m SUV models in August 2023.

Key Takeaways

Maruti Brezza

  • Despite a nearly 12% decline in sales compared to the previous month, the Maruti Brezza maintained its position as the best-selling subcompact SUV in August 2023. With over 14,500 units sold, this Maruti SUV also achieved a year-on-year growth of 6%.

 Hyundai Venue

  • The Hyundai Venue climbed to the second spot on the sales table by selling 2,800 units more than the Tata Nexon. With a month-over-month growth of 8.8%, the Venue is the only subcompact SUV, after the Brezza, to exceed the 10,000-unit sales mark. Additionally, the Venue recently received a safety update, making it an attractive option for customers.

 Tata Nexon

  • Sales of the Nexon took a significant hit in August 2023, decreasing by 34.82%. This can be attributed to customers eagerly awaiting the launch of the Tata Nexon facelift and its updated electric version, scheduled for September 14. With new tech features and a refreshed design, it is expected that the Nexon will regain its momentum in the market.

 Mahindra XUV300

Kia Sonet Diesel

 Nissan Magnite

  • Nissan sold over 2,500 units of the Magnite in August 2023, which is consistent with its average sales in the last six months.

The iPhone 15 Pro Color Options Are Going To Upset Some People

Apple’s decision to use titanium as the material for its premium phones, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, is likely to upset some people. Titanium is a natural element known for its high resistance to chemical erosion and its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, making it an obvious choice for Apple. Not only does titanium offer superior qualities compared to stainless steel, but it is also lighter.

In recent years, gold has been a popular color option for the stainless steel finish of iPhones, starting with the iPhone XS in 2018. However, with the switch to titanium, Apple will no longer offer a gold color option. Instead, Apple plans to showcase the natural beauty of titanium with a titanium gray option. Apple’s rationale seems to be that if they are using the best material available, there is no need to hide it. The titanium iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone Pro Max will also likely come in space black and silver colors.

Although fans of purple and gold may be disappointed to learn that these colors may be discontinued, the introduction of a new dark blue option and the stronger, lighter titanium build may provide some consolation. It is important to note that titanium is more expensive than stainless steel, so it remains to be seen how this change will impact the cost of the iPhone 15 Pro. However, we won’t have to wait long to find out. Soon, we will get a closer look at the new color options available for the iPhone 15 lineup.

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick + Rating

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee with its highest safety honor. Both the standard Grand Cherokee and the three-row Grand Cherokee L have received the IIHS Top Safety Pick + rating. However, there are some important details to consider.

The current-generation Grand Cherokee was introduced in 2020, followed by the longer Grand Cherokee L in early 2021. But it is important to note that the IIHS awards specifically apply to 2023 models, and more specifically, Grand Cherokees built after March 2023. For Grand Cherokee L models, the production date requirement is May 2023.

So, what brought about this recognition? According to the IIHS, Jeep made structural changes to the Grand Cherokee’s undercarriage to address a significant fuel leak issue that arose in earlier models during crash tests. This leak was caused by the tank being punctured by sheet metal. These changes, along with adjustments to the headlights across all Grand Cherokee trims, were made by Jeep to improve safety ratings.

The 2023 Grand Cherokee models built after the specified dates now receive good ratings in all IIHS crash tests, including overlap front crash tests for both the driver and passenger sides, as well as side-impact tests. In terms of lighting, the changes made by Jeep have resulted in either good or acceptable ratings for all trim levels of the Grand Cherokee.

To qualify for the IIHS Top Safety Pick + award, vehicles must have frontal crash prevention systems that achieve advanced or superior ratings in vehicle-to-pedestrian collisions. The 2023 Grand Cherokee, in its standard and L formats, received an advanced rating for daytime operation and a superior rating for nighttime operation. Jeep provides this system as standard on all Grand Cherokee trim levels, making it deserving of the Top Safety Pick + accolade.

In terms of pricing, Jeep offers the 2023 Grand Cherokee in eight different trims. The base trim, the Grand Cherokee Laredo, starts at $41,330 (including a $1,795 destination fee) for a two-wheel-drive model with a white exterior. All other colors come at an additional $595 cost. Opting for four-wheel drive adds $2,000 to the price, and the cheapest three-row Grand Cherokee (2WD) starts at $43,330. At the top of the range, the Grand Cherokee L starts at $72,735 with standard 4WD. However, choosing any exterior color other than white incurs a $595 upcharge.

Diesel owners entitled to compensation following ruling by German federal court

The highest federal court in Germany has determined that car manufacturers must provide compensation to owners of diesel cars equipped with illegal emission manipulation devices.

This decision comes after a lengthy class-action lawsuit filed against Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen by diesel car owners in Germany.

The federal court’s ruling overturns previous dismissals by state courts, which had referred the claims of diesel car owners to lower courts of appeal.

In its ruling, Germany’s federal court stated that the car manufacturers bear the burden of proving that their diesel emission manipulation devices are not illegal.

As a result of the ruling, owners can now claim between 5% and 15% of the purchase price of their diesel cars that are fitted with illegal emission manipulation devices. This judgment has direct implications for similar lawsuits against other car manufacturers in Germany.

Owners had argued that the value of their diesel cars had been negatively affected due to the use of illegal diesel emission manipulation devices.

The judge referred to several diesel emission manipulation devices, including the so-called “thermal window software programs” allegedly used by Audi, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz.

“Thermal window software program” refers to a device that reduces or disables the nitrous oxide filtering effect of the selective catalytic reduction system within a specific temperature range in a diesel exhaust system.

When diesel cars are started under cold conditions, there is a risk of condensation buildup in their selective catalytic reduction filter systems.

The car manufacturers have argued that the use of thermal window software programs, which reduce or disable the filtering effect, helps prevent condensation and the risk of rust buildup, thereby protecting the engine.

However, this practice results in significantly higher nitrous oxide and particulate emissions than claimed by the manufacturers.

Volkswagen, when questioned about the ruling, stated that its diesel emission systems are not illegal and expects the court to continue rejecting any compensation claims.

Mercedes-Benz argued that European regulatory authorities considered thermal window software programs permissible until July 2022. Therefore, they believe the use of such programs cannot be seen as negligence.
