Tata Punch 2-Year Recap: Take A Look At The Journey So Far

The prices of the Tata Punch have gone up by up to Rs 50,000 since launch

Tata Punch: 2 Year Recap

On 18 October 2021, the Tata Punch was launched in India as the country’s first micro-SUV, making the appeal of the SUV form factor more accessible in hatchback proportions. The Punch made a strong initial impression too with a 5-star safety rating in Global NCAP’s old crash tests, a first for a car that small. Celebrating its second birthday, let’s recap all that has happened with the Tata Punch in the past year.

Price Increments

Tata Punch

At launch, the Punch was priced between Rs 5.49 lakh and Rs 9.39 lakh (ex-showroom). Over the years, the micro-SUV went through 4 price hikes, the maximum of which was up to Rs 50,000.

Tata also added a few new variants of the Punch in this time frame, contributing to the change in its prices.

Powertrain Upgrades – Now With CNG!

Tata Punch Engine

At launch, the Tata Punch only came with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine which made 86PS and 115Nm. This engine came paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT.

It still gets the same engine but there’s been a bump in performance since the implementation of the BS6.2 emission norms, now rated at 88PS and 115Nm. The claimed fuel efficiency has improved a little as well.

Tata Punch CNG

Following its pre-production showcase at the Auto Expo in February 2023, the Tata Punch is now available in a CNG version as well. It arrived in August priced from Rs 7.10 lakh (ex-showroom), featuring a twin cylinder technology that allowed it to retain a usable amount of boot space unlike most CNG variants in the market.

This CNG powertrain comes with the same 1.2-litre petrol engine, has a lower output of 73.5PS and 103Nm, and is mated only to the 5-speed manual transmission. Tata claims a fuel efficiency of 26.99km/kg. The Punch CNG is offered in 3 broad variants – Pure, Adventure and Accomplished, priced from Rs 7.10 lakh to 9.68 lakh (ex-showroom).

Feature Rejig

Tata Punch Sunroof

The Punch got a few feature upgrades in its first year since launch, and it has got a few more in the last 12 months. Perhaps the most popular addition is the voice enabled sunroof, while a Type-C charging port and front armrest are also available now.

Tata Punch Cabin

Tata offered the Punch with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 7-inch semi-digital driver’s display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, cruise control, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX child seat anchors.

A New Foe Appears

Tata Punch vs Hyundai Exter

Since its launch to this year in July, the Tata Punch had no direct rival. But then, Hyundai launched the Exter, as the second offering in the micro-SUV space. Both SUVs have similar prices, sizes and boxy design languages, but are different in many ways. The Hyundai Exter, being a new offering, has a more modern appeal to it, and offers more premium features. However, the Punch still remains the one with a 5-star Global NCAP safety rating.

Sales Milestone!

Tata Punch 2 Lakh Milestone

After completing its 1 lakh units milestone in its first year of sale, the Tata Punch, before the completion of its 2 years, reached the production milestone of 2 lakh units. The Punch became one of the highest-selling cars in India, due to its SUV appeal and affordable price.

Even today, the Punch marks its place every month in the list of highest-selling cars in India, with 6-month average sales of 12,000 units.

Any Updates Coming?

Tata Tigor EV battery pack

Tata is currently working on the development of the Punch EV, which will sit between the Tigor EV and the Nexon EV. The electric version of the Punch has been spied multiple times and will likely offer two battery packs with a claimed range of up to 350km. It will come with EV-specific design changes similar to the ones seen on the electric version of the Tiago or Tigor. The Punch EV is due to arrive sometime in 2024 or sooner.

Tata can also update the Punch with a facelift which could offer a similar modern design language as the new Nexon facelift, but details about the updated micro-SUV are slim. However, with the popularity of this small SUV, we could see big updates in due time.

10 Cheap New Cars That Are Actually Worth Buying

Gone are the days when cheap cars were once merely moving boxes on wheels. Technological advances mean that automakers today can include features in cheap cars previously found in expensive models. For less than $25,000, you can buy a well-equipped, spacious, and sporty car. Cheap cars are also incredibly economical, making them ideal for daily use.

The trade-off for all the advantages of owning a cheap car is the lack of luxury and performance. Most budget cars are known to have low-grade, plasticky interiors, but things have come a long way and even budget-friendly options do have some strengths. Also, the engines fitted to most cheap cars aren’t renowned for their potency. Regardless, the pros outweigh the cons and here are 10 cheap new cars that are worth buying.

We collected data from automakers, government websites like fueleconomy.gov, and specialized sites like Edmunds and Car and Driver to compile a list of affordable new cars worth buying.

1 2023 Nissan Versa

Starting MSRP: $15,980

2023 Nissan Versa front 3/4 view
Nissan

Nissan redesigned the Versa for the 2023 model, perhaps trying to boost the car’s dwindling sales. All models got a revised front fascia, and the SR trim received a new wheel design. Nissan also increased the number of standard features available with each model. The top-of-the-range SR is the one to get as it has the most standard features, including LED headlights and remote start.

The SR and the SV, the middle model, come with an automatic transmission. The cheapest and least-equipped base S is also one of the cheapest new cars on sale today and it features a five-speed manual transmission. The Versa isn’t a performance car, so the stick shift offers little over the automatic. Still, for drivers still loyal to the stick shift, the S is the ideal choice. Nissan provides an S Plus package for customers of the manual S, which adds Android Auto and Apple Carplay and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat.

2 2023 Kia Rio

2023 Kia Rio profile
KIA

It’s a shame that Kia is pulling the plug on the impressive Kia Rio. The Rio offers fabulous value for money, with its three trims – LX Sedan, S Sedan, and S Hatchback – costing under $20,000. The S variant is the obvious choice, given the number of standard options you get by forking out several hundred dollars more. S model customers get a rear USB outlet, keyless entry, and a center armrest, among others.

The hatchback seems more logical than the sedan as it offers more passenger and cargo space. The Rio’s performance is unspectacular but on par with most subcompact crossovers. A plus point for the Rio is the car’s expertly-tuned suspension.

3 2023 Kia Forte

Starting MSRP: $19,690

Kia Forte GT on the road
KIA

Kia’s redesign of the Forte in 2022 – a new grille, new wheel designs, revised bumpers, revised exterior lighting elements – turned it into a looker. The Korean manufacturer also added several standard features, including a lane-following assist system. However, Kia did nothing to improve the car’s lethargic 2.0-liter engine, which comes with the FE, LXS, and GT-Line variants.

The GT, which comes with a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, is the most attractive option. It comes with a host of standard features, including sports seats and a power unit, which vastly improve the Forte’s performance. Unfortunately, the $700 six-speed manual available with the GT, pushes the car’s price beyond $25,000.

Blue 2024 Nissan Sentra

Don’t expect a stirring performance with the Nissan Sentra. However, prepare to step into a car with a posh and tech-loaded interior. The car’s 2.0-liter 149 horsepower engine is unremarkable: it powers the Sentra to 60 MPH in a gingerly 8.8 seconds. Expect labored and clunky overtakes on the freeway.

Inside, the Nissan looks more expensive than it is. Occupants ride on comfy Zero Gravity seats, and the top model comes with quilted leather upholstery. The mid-tier model, dubbed the SV, offers the best value for money. It has more standard equipment than the base S model, and by purchasing the SV Premium package, you get leather upholstery, a sunroof, heated front seats, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.

5 2023 Volkswagen Jetta

The Volkswagen Jetta’s excellent handling masks the underwhelming nature of its turbocharged 158-horsepower engine. The Jetta’s base models, the S and Sport, are spacious and well-equipped. For instance, you get a wealth of safety features, heated exterior mirrors, cloth upholstery, rain-sensing wipers, and a six-speed manual on the base S (an eight-speed automatic is available for a price).

The Jetta offers plenty of passenger and cargo space but very little in terms of standard driver assists. Barring automatic braking and blind-spot warning, most driver aids are optional. 6 2023 Hyundai Elantra

The affordable Hyundai Elantra models are the SEL and the SE. They come with unspectacular 2.0-cylinder engines putting out 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet. The SE model is the cheapest but lacks features you would get as standard by purchasing the SEL. For instance, the SEL comes with SiriusXM and a hands-free trunk release.

The SEL also offers access to the stacked SEL Convenience Package. It adds a 10.3-inch infotainment system, a similarly-sized digital cluster, a wireless charging pad, heated mirrors, heated front seats, and many more features. The base Elantras aren’t as fuel-efficient as the expensive hybrid models but are still very economical.

7 2024 Toyota Corolla LE Sedan

Starting MSRP: $21,900

2023 Toyota Corolla
Toyota

The LE Sedan, the base Corolla variant, is the cheapest gas-powered Corolla you can buy. Don’t let the car’s sporty looks or the sporting pedigree of the pricier Corollas fool you into thinking that the LE trim is fast. Under the hood lies a 2.0-liter 169-horsepower engine that rolls the LE to 60 MPH in 8.2 seconds.

The allure of the Corolla Sedan over other models on this list is Toyota’s bulletproof reliability and dependability and the car’s practical nature. Getting used to the low-grade interior might take a while, but as you do, the Toyota compact sedan’s incredible fuel economy will bring you some joy. You get 35 MPG combined: 32 MPG in cities and 41 MPG on highways.

The Impreza sedan is no more, as all variants of the sixth-gen Subaru Impreza are hatchbacks. The Base variant is the cheapest and, predictably, the least equipped. While the mid-tier Sport and top-tier RS models get an 11.6-inch infotainment display with Subaru’s Starlink multimedia system, the Base variant gets a 7.0-inch screen without the Starlink system.

The car’s performance leaves plenty to be desired. However, Subaru has improved the car’s front-seat design and reduced cabin noise. The new Impreza also features a bigger fuel tank than the outgoing model.

Honda scrapped the manual transmission with the new Civic, making the CVT transmission standard across all models. Perhaps unfairly, most of the Mazda 3 goodies go to the turbocharged variants. The affordable Base and Select Sport variants get little in terms of standard options. The upside, however, is that the Mazda 3 is a delight to drive, regardless of the trim. Base and Select Sport options feature a 2.5-liter inline-four engine. Toyota Century SUV Convertible Teased Because Why Not

Toyota has teased a convertible version of its Century SUV, following the roofless sedan version unveiled for Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement parade in 2019. The sketch of the roofless variant was shown during the world premiere of the Century SUV, indicating that Toyota is considering offering a convertible version of the luxury SUV. The convertible variant might feature a fabric top tucked away behind the rear seats.

2019 Toyota Century Convertible

Toyota’s Chief Branding Officer, Simon Humphries, acknowledged the sketch during the presentation, indicating that the company is serious about launching a four-door, ultra-luxury SUV convertible. The regular version of the Century SUV is expected to be a rare sight in Japan, with Toyota estimating annual sales of approximately 360 units.

In addition, two other SUVs were showcased at the premiere. One of them was a GRMN version with carbon fiber body parts and electrically sliding rear doors, reminiscent of a minivan. These new SUV models signify Toyota’s departure from the traditional sedan market.

To maintain the exclusivity of the sedan, Toyota promises to offer unique customization options for the Century SUV, catering to the preferences of its affluent customers. The SUV will complement the sedan rather than replace it.

Will there be a PS5 Slim?

Console redesigns are common, and Sony has done it multiple times with its PlayStation consoles. The PS3 Slim was released in 2009, boasting a reduction in thickness, weight, and power consumption compared to the original model. In 2012, Sony launched the Super Slim, which was even smaller and lighter than the previous PS3 model. The PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro were announced in 2016, with the Slim model being significantly smaller and more power-efficient than the original. These redesigns have contributed to the success of the PS3 and PS4, with millions of units sold. It would make sense for Sony to consider a PS5 Slim to boost sales in a similar manner.

BMW M5 Touring to Make a Comeback in 2024 as a 700bhp-Plus Hybrid

The BMW M5 Touring will be making a return in 2024, after being absent from the lineup since the discontinuation of the E60-generation model in 2010.

BMW has confirmed that the new M5 will be available as both a saloon and estate model, and will feature a hybrid powertrain, as previously reported by Autocar.

The hybrid powertrain is expected to combine BMW’s 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged S63 V8 engine with a rear-mounted electric motor. Sources close to BMW claim that the combined power and torque outputs of the two units will be around 790bhp and 737lb ft.

Early prototypes of the new M5 were said to use a lithium-ion battery similar to the 12.0kWh unit found in the outgoing BMW 545e. It is still uncertain whether this battery will be used in the production versions of the next M5, as BMW M is rumored to be developing its own performance battery with ultra-rapid discharge properties.

The larger batteries found in the upcoming 530e and 550e PHEVs suggest that the new M5 may also receive a more capacious battery pack.

2024 BMW M5 Touring side detail

“We are now also installing a hybrid drive system with typical M performance in other high-performance cars,” said BMW M development head Dirk Häcker.

The power from the hybrid powertrain will be delivered through an eight-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox, and the M5 will feature a rear-biased xDrive four-wheel drive system.

The next generation of the M5 will also have a heavily reworked chassis, with notable features such as a wider front and rear track.

The introduction of the new BMW i5 won’t bring an all-electric M5, but the M division has made modifications to the electric saloon. The i5 M60, while not as focused on performance as the M5, can still accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, thanks to its dual-motor powertrain that produces a combined output of 593bhp and 605lb ft.

New 2023 Peugeot 508 facelift priced from £34,020 in the UK

The recently launched Peugeot 508 has been made available for purchase in the UK, featuring a fresh design update and updated powertrain options, starting at a price of £34,020.

The latest version of the 508 introduces an updated version of Peugeot’s distinctive sabre-tooth lighting system, featuring a three-spoke “claw” design.

A new grille, reminiscent of the Peugeot 408, completes the front-end design update, showcasing gloss and textured black elements, as well as the new Peugeot emblem.

This extensive design overhaul aims to prolong the lifespan of the R83-generation model, which was first introduced in 2018.

Both the saloon and SW estate variants of the 508 have a width of 1.86m. The saloon has a length of 4.75m, while the estate measures 4.79m. The saloon offers a luggage capacity of 487 litres, which can be expanded to 1537 litres with the rear seats folded. The estate, on the other hand, provides 530 litres of space, expandable to 1780 litres.

New Peugeot 508 interior

The interior of the 508 is equipped with many of the advanced technologies found throughout the Peugeot lineup. It boasts a redesigned dashboard and centre console, as well as a 10.0in central infotainment display combined with Peugeot’s 12.0in i-Cockpit system and a compact steering wheel.

In addition to features like voice recognition, sat-nav, a motorised boot, two USB sockets, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the 508 also benefits from a night vision camera capable of detecting cyclists, animals, and pedestrians.

The 508 is loaded with a wide range of assistance features, including level two semi-autonomous capability, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane assist, parking sensors, a reversing camera, and automatic high beam.

The 508’s lineup has been streamlined to three options – the entry-level Allure, GT, and performance-focused Peugeot Sport Engineered (PSE) – available with petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Peugeot’s entry-level option, also found in the smaller 308 and 408 models, offers a three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol PureTech engine producing 130bhp. Additionally, a 130bhp 1.5-litre diesel engine is also available.
