Toyota Racing Driver Ken Gushi On His Love of Drift

Ken Gushi is a racing driver for Team Toyota and a well-known figure in the world of Formula Drift. He has been driving for the series for as long as it has been in the United States, and he has always been behind the wheel of a Toyota.

Gushi expresses his excitement about being partnered with Toyota, stating that it is a dream come true for him. He grew up watching his father race the AE86 Corolla, and his family has always owned Toyota cars. Being able to represent Toyota as an athlete and share his story is something that still makes him feel good even after 15 years.

Gushi, who was born in Japan and now lives in Southern California, competes in Formula Drift with a Toyota GR Supra. He developed his love for drifting at a young age, learning to drive in his father’s Toyota AE86 when he was only 13 years old.

Despite coming from a family with limited financial resources, Gushi’s determination and talent led him to become the youngest competitor in the D1 Grand Prix and Formula Drift championships at the age of 16. He firmly believes that there is no dream too big to pursue.

Throughout his more than a decade-long partnership with Toyota, Gushi has become one of the most recognizable figures in drifting and has played a crucial role in the sport’s growth. He attributes his success to the support he has received from fans and the dedicated team members who have been with him throughout his journey.

The Drift Difference

Drifting is a unique form of racing in which drivers maneuver their cars through a marked course while deliberately sliding sideways at high speeds. Unlike other motorsports that focus on speed or time, drifting is judged based on the execution and style of the slides.

In a Formula Drift event, drivers compete in tandem battles in a single-elimination bracket format. The drivers are ranked and placed into a bracket based on their qualifications, determining the pairs for the competition. Each driver competes one-on-one against another, and they are judged on their ability to complete the course with a high angle while maintaining fluidity and forward momentum.

Although drifting originated in Japan, Formula Drift is the first official drifting series in North America, established in 2003. Gushi has been involved in drifting for over 17 seasons and has witnessed the growth of the sport in the United States from its early days. He started his professional career in 2004, competing in the inaugural Formula Drift Championship in the U.S.

For Gushi, drifting is not just a job but a hobby that he is fortunate enough to get paid for. He feels a sense of accomplishment and joy when participating in the sport.

A Series Leader

Gushi has achieved multiple top-three finishes in the Formula Pro Championship standings throughout his career. His first victory was in 2005, which he remembers as a significant accomplishment and a moment of great happiness.

In 2019, as the owner-driver for Ken Gushi Motorsports, he finished 11th in the final standings and secured his first victory since 2005 in the series finale at Irwindale Speedway. His most recent win was in Salt Lake City in 2022.

During the Irwindale event, Gushi began the race in second position with his Toyota 86 and advanced to the Final Four after competing against several other drivers. In the final series, he faced a tough battle but ultimately emerged as the winner at the “House of Drift” in front of his home crowd. The victory holds a special place in his heart and is a moment he will never forget.

F1 Reflects on 50 Years of Safety Cars, Starting with the Porsche 914

Safety cars are an essential part of Formula One events, serving to protect track marshals and safety crews during accidents or hazardous conditions on the track. While they are a familiar sight in modern races, there is a rich history behind these safety cars, as explored in a video on the Formula One YouTube channel.

The very first official Safety Car was a Porsche 914/6, used at the Canadian Grand Prix in 1973. Since then, Formula One has employed various cars for this role, including the Lamborghini Countach at the 1981 Monaco Grand Prix. Other unlikely choices have included the Ford Escort Cosworth, Renault Clio, and Fiat Tempra. It became evident that the safety cars needed to be fast enough to maintain normal operating temperatures in the Formula One cars’ brakes, tires, and engines, which is why in 1996 Formula One entered into an agreement with Mercedes-Benz to provide the official safety cars. Mercedes-Benz and its high-performance division, AMG, have supplied a range of vehicles, such as the CLK63 AMG Black Series, SLS AMG, and Mercedes-AMG GT, to fulfill the demands of the role. This exclusivity lasted until 2021 when Aston Martin joined as a partner, sharing the responsibility of providing safety cars.

However, being a Formula One Safety Car driver encompasses more than just piloting a fast car like the Aston Martin Vantage. It requires a skilled driver like Bernd Maylander. Maylander, an accomplished race car driver in his own right, won the 1997 FIA GT and the Nurburgring 24 Hours in 2000. For the past 24 years, he has served as the primary Safety Car driver in over 212 Grand Prix events.

The Formula One Safety Cars differ significantly from their stock, road-going counterparts. They are equipped with enhanced performance and safety features to handle the demands of the track. Special lights and communication equipment, including GPS and telemetry systems, are utilized to pinpoint the location of any accidents and the leading car during races.

Even to this day, Formula One and the role of the Safety Car continue to evolve. Maylander emphasizes the importance of teamwork and the continuous learning process within the safety car team. While he cherishes the memories from his extensive tenure as the primary Safety Car driver, it is the collaborative effort of the entire team that he takes the most pride in.

Endurance personified: 24h in the life of Romain Grosjean

Lamborghini Factory Driver Romain Grosjean opens up on life after Formula One as the countdown to the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship with LMDh begins

Sant’Agata Bolognese, 20 June 2023 – Former Formula One and Lamborghini factory driver Romain Grosjean is preparing for his next challenge: as a key player in Lamborghini’s campaign in the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship. Profiled in two new Lamborghini films, the Swiss-French star discusses the exhilarating power of endurance racing; the anticipation surrounding Lamborghini’s newly announced LMDh contender; and the impact the events of the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix had on his life, and personal philosophy.

Now based in Miami, 36-year old Grosjean made 179 race starts in Formula One in a career that spanned nine seasons, from 2012 to 2020, as well as appearances in 2009. Since 2021 he has competed in the American IndyCar Series. He made his debut for Lamborghini’s Squadra Corse motorsport division when he raced a Huracán GT3 EVO2 in the celebrated Daytona 24 Hours race in January 2023. With progress on the LMDh rapidly gathering momentum, Grosjean is playing a key role in the development of Lamborghini’s eagerly-awaited LMDh racing hybrid prototype. The car is powered by an all-new 3.8-liter twin turbo V8, whose power output is limited by regulation to 680 CV.

Says Grosjean, “I love endurance racing. When I moved to the US, I really wanted to come to Daytona and the opportunity came with Lamborghini to do it. I love the atmosphere, and I love the fact that we were able to represent such an iconic brand. When you’re 20, all you care about is being the fastest. Now I’m older I love having team-mates. It’s not only about you, it’s about making sure that your team is the best around the race-track. It’s about compromise and making sure that everyone is happy.”

He continues: ‘There’s a lot of trust there, and the biggest challenge really is the endurance – for everyone, including the mechanics and the engineers. The drivers get the easy job, we get to rest! You have to expect the unexpected in endurance racing, and be ready for it.”

As well as the FIA World Endurance Championship, which includes the famously challenging Le Mans 24 Hours race, the LMDh will also contest the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in North America. This marks Lamborghini’s greatest commitment yet in motorsport following three class wins in the GTD category at the 24 Hours of Daytona, two consecutive wins in the Sebring 12 Hours, and numerous other successes during the past decade. Now the Hypercar class of the world’s two most fiercely contested endurance racing championships beckons, with Grosjean one of the drivers leading the charge.

“I’m very excited to be part of the project with the LMDh for next year,” he says. “I love the brand, I like the project, I like the approach, I like the people behind it. I know there’s a lot of work to do and there’s going to be a lot of learning for everyone, but I’m ready. Lamborghini is a brand that loves to be successful, one with a lot of history. So when we go into something, we need to do it right.”

During the opening lap of the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, Grosjean survived a terrifyingly high-speed impact which saw him trapped in his Haas VF-20 for 28 seconds while an inferno raged. Arguably one of the most dramatic incidents in modern F1 history, Grosjean reflects positively on how the crash and its aftermath have affected his life.

“My accident changed my perspective in a big way. Being brave is about pushing yourself to always go further than you think you’re going to go. It’s about challenging yourself. Life is a beautiful thing, and I didn’t realize it could go away so quickly until that accident. It sounds a bit crazy but because my life is better now, I would think of [my accident] as a positive. I want to enjoy life in a bigger way, have fun and make sure that every day is a good day. I’m aware that I take risks in my life but there are also limits I set for myself.”

A committed family man, amongst his many talents Grosjean is an accomplished cook, and recently learned to fly. This is a man dedicated to expanding his horizons. “I’m a father, I’m a husband. I’m just someone normal that loves activities, that loves ‘doing’. When I start something I go flat-out. Flying makes my travelling and my life more efficient and more fun. I feel peaceful when I fly. You are taking a small space in the sky for yourself when you fly, you see the Earth in a different way.”

Back on terra firma, Grosjean has an equally stimulating mode of transport: a Lamborghini Urus Performante[1]. As he says, it’s a family car but one with a serious twist. “It’s just so cool to drive. The Performante sounds amazing, and even if it’s an SUV everyone knows it’s a Lamborghini. And I’ve got space for my kids.”

Lamborghini’s outstanding colour palette presented some problems, however. “My daughter wanted purple or pink. My second son wanted yellow. My eldest son wanted orange, and my wife wanted black. So I said, ‘all right guys, you know what? We’re going to go with green. It’s my car, I decide…”

DS AUTOMOBILES READY TO CELEBRATE ITS CENTURY IN FORMULA E

  • DS Automobiles will celebrate its 100th race in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship next Sunday in Jakarta, Indonesia
  • Participants in Formula E since 2015, DS Automobiles has established itself as the most decorated manufacturer in the all-electric competition as the only two-time double winning team, and has won a record number of titles and podiums
  • With PENSKE AUTOSPORT, Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Vergne, DS Automobiles is at the forefront of the action in Season 9 Formula E

This weekend marks a significant anniversary for DS Automobiles and the world of Formula E. On Sunday 4 June, at the second race of the Jakarta E-Prix, the French manufacturer will start a Formula E race for the 100th time since its involvement in the 100% electric championship began.

DS Automobiles joined Formula E in 2015 and has made its mark on the history of electric motorsport with three generations of Formula E. Heading into its 100th race, DS Automobiles has racked up four Team and Drivers’ championship titles, 16 race victories, 47 podiums and 22 pole positions to its name.

DS Automobiles has established itself as the most decorated manufacturer in Formula E with a podium from nearly every other race it has taken part in over almost eight years. DS Automobiles is also the only team to win a double title twice (in 2019 with Jean-Eric Vergne and 2020 with Antonio Félix Da Costa).

To celebrate this anniversary, reigning world champion Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Vergne – the only two-time champion in the history of the sport – will drive a DS E-TENSE FE23 with a one-off livery to mark the occasion. Jean-Eric Vergne, who is also a DS Automobiles ambassador, will also celebrate 100 races with a bespoke design on his helmet.

The event will be celebrated with a video featuring testimonials from the personalities who have played key a role in the DS Automobiles Formula E adventure on the brand’s social channels. These include Béatrice Foucher, Yves Bonnefont, Alessandro Agag, Jean-Marc Finot, Thomas Chevaucher, Eugenio Franzetti, Jean-Eric Vergne, Stoffel Vandoorne, Antonio Félix Da Costa, Sam Bird and André Lotterer. The video will also include clips of some of the team’s greatest moments including winning the debut title in New York, their second title in Berlin, plus victories in Sanya, Bern, Marrakesh, Monaco, Rome, and Hyderabad.

The story of DS Automobiles continues to unfold, and the two races of the Jakarta E-Prix on 3 and 4 June promise more fine performances from the French team.

Eugenio Franzetti, DS Performance director, said “We’ll be experiencing a historic and moving moment for all of us in Jakarta. First of all, I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who has contributed with such passion and talent to this extraordinary event. Celebrating 100 races in Formula E is truly a milestone, and to do so with the sort of track record that we have accumulated is a source of great pride. A few years ago, DS Automobiles decided to create its DS Performance competition arm, and entered the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. This turned out to be a strategic and winning choice. Thanks to our many victories accumulated over the years, the reputation of DS Automobiles has grown considerably, and we’ve also acquired the technical experience that has helped us to support and accelerate the electrification of the entire brand. These days, the Gen3 single-seaters from DS Performance remain an excellent research laboratory to prepare our next generation of electric road cars. From 2024 in fact, all new cars from DS Automobiles will be 100% electric.”

Key figures since DS Automobiles entered Formula E:

–               98 races

–               4 championship titles

–               16 victories

–               47 podiums

–               22 pole positions

Nissan Formula E Team to tackle the heat in Jakarta

YOKOHAMA, JapanNissan Formula E Team is set to take on the Jakarta E-Prix this weekend, looking to build on a positive performance in Monaco. The squad picked up its best result of the season on the Monte-Carlo streets, with both Sacha Fenestraz and Norman Nato in the top-three in qualifying, before Fenestraz claimed fourth in the race.

The championship now returns to Jakarta following its maiden visit to the city in Season 8. This year, the event becomes a double-header, with teams and drivers to be battling the tough conditions in two races. With temperatures in excess of 30 degrees Celsius and extremely high humidity, the new-for-Season 9 Gen3 cars will face a unique test on the Formula E calendar.

The 2.4-kilometre circuit, based in Northern Jakarta and a short walk from Ancol Beach, features 18 corners, with the best overtaking opportunities into Turns 1 and 16. Those heavy braking zones and the twisty, high-speed middle sector combine to produce a layout that tests driver and car throughout.

Qualifying takes place at 10:40 WIB (UTC +7) on both days, with the two races getting underway at 15:00. Find out how to watch here.

Tommaso Volpe, managing director and team principal, Nissan Formula E Team: “We’ve been working hard since Monaco to give us the best possible chance to build on our performance and keep up the momentum, which has been a challenge for us this year. We definitely made big improvements ahead of the last round, so we’re aiming to consolidate that and continue our development. Jakarta will be tough for everyone. It’s very hot, humid and physically strenuous for the drivers. But it will also be very demanding for all the teams, mainly because of the conditions. With this in mind, we’re focusing on finding the best possible set-up to keep the car as cool as we can and to look after the tires. Our goal for the remainder of the season is to find some more consistency and to be able to fight with both cars in the points. Jakarta will be a challenge, but it’s one we’re ready for.”

Sacha Fenestraz: “The hottest race of the year, everybody has been telling me how tough it will be! On the racing side, I’m very excited, following our best weekend of the season in Monaco. Heading to Jakarta, we are happy and in a good position in terms of the team environment. We’ll be looking to back up our performance from Monaco and prove it wasn’t a one-off, so it’s an important event for us. The track looks interesting, similar to Monaco or Cape Town in terms of some of the corners and the track characteristics, so I’m hoping for a great weekend.”

Norman Nato: “I’m excited to race in Jakarta, a new venue for me. It will be really tough physically for the teams and drivers with the high temperatures. We’ll look to build on the promise we showed in Monaco, and hopefully be able to put both cars in the points. To be second and third in qualifying was an incredible achievement, but we have to always look to improve and continue the momentum. This weekend we need to take that promise and convert it into two strong races to get the second half of the season off to a great start.”

Nissan Formula E Team takes double top-five finish in Jakarta

JAKARTA, IndonesiaNissan Formula E Team took their best result of the season in Jakarta, with Sacha Fenestraz and Norman Nato both putting in excellent performances to take fourth and fifth respectively in Round 11 of the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

After a tough first race of the weekend for the squad, Fenestraz claimed second in his qualifying group on Sunday, progressing to the Duels. The Franco-Argentine driver started seventh, and got an excellent launch off the line, moving up to fourth by the end of Lap 1.

Meanwhile, Frenchman Nato was making solid progress through the field, keeping cool in the Jakarta heat to make places during the Attack Mode phase. Having started 12th, Nato avoided incidents ahead of him and used his speed and overtaking ability to move further into the top-10.

Helped by the team’s strong strategy, both drivers continued to push into the higher points-paying positions, challenging for a podium spot until the final corner. The pair combined for 22 points, the squad’s best result of the season so far.

Formula E returns on 24 June for the final single-header of the season, as the series makes it first visit to Portland, USA.

Tommaso Volpe, managing director and team principal, Nissan Formula E Team: “A rollercoaster of a weekend, with a tough race yesterday and a really good one today. We were stronger in qualifying and had a much better strategy during the race. Both drivers did a great job, with some impressive overtakes. Sacha even battled for the podium until the final corner, while Norman’s defense was very solid at the end of the race. We can be very happy with our performance and proud of the team and drivers. Our focus now is to take this positive showing into the next round in Portland to pick up even more points there.”

Sacha Fenestraz: “This weekend was a good way to see our strengths and weaknesses as a team. Today was a very positive race, it was great for the crew to reward their hard work over the last few months. Yesterday was quite frustrating, but we came back strongly and both cars had very good pace. Norman did a superb job to come from P12 on the grid to P5 at the finish and I’m really happy that we both took a strong result. The heat was definitely a challenge, but the humidity was the most difficult. However, we pushed through as a team to score some really good points. I’m now looking forward to Portland, it’s a brand-new track for all of us so it should be an interesting one!”

Norman Nato: “Today was really positive. We changed the setup, because yesterday we weren’t so competitive and it worked for us. We managed to put it all together in the race and react from the frustration of Saturday to get a great result for both cars. We’ll now look to analyze this one to see what we can do to continue improving for Portland. We had strong pace throughout today’s event, so we have to aim to score big points for the rest of the season. We’re not far off the leading teams based on this performance, and we have five races left to prove what we can do this year.”
