Toyota Corolla GR Sport Performs Well in the Moose Test

The Toyota Corolla, now in its twelfth generation, is a widely popular model for the Japanese automaker. It is sold in various markets around the world, including North America, Japan, Europe, China, and more. In Europe, there is a sporty variant called the Corolla GR Sport, positioned below the high-performance GR Corolla hot hatch. The Corolla GR Sport features an aggressive design and a hybrid combustion engine. The team at km77.com recently conducted a moose test to evaluate its performance.

The tested Corolla GR Sport in the video is a 2023 model for the Spanish market. It is powered by a naturally aspirated and electrified four-cylinder gasoline engine, producing 196 horsepower (144 kilowatts) and 140 pound-feet (190 Newton-meters) of torque. However, peak power is not the only factor that determines a car’s performance in the moose test.

What’s more important is that the hatchback has an adjustable suspension with Normal and Sport modes. It rides on 18-inch wheels with Falken Ziex ZE914B tires measuring 225/40. After several days of testing, the km77.com editors found that the Corolla GR Sport feels nimble and agile on curvy roads. But how does it perform in the moose test?

Even during the first attempt, when the driver is unfamiliar with the car’s behavior, the Corolla GR Sport demonstrates good cornering abilities. While the test pilot does hit a few cones initially, with a few more attempts, they are able to learn the car’s dynamics and achieve its best performance. Ultimately, the speedy hatch reaches a maximum speed of 47.22 miles per hour (76 kilometers per hour) in the moose test, which is impressive considering it’s not a performance-focused car.

If you desire an even more capable Corolla, there is the GR Corolla. For the 2024 model year, the GR Corolla Circuit Edition makes a return with a 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine that delivers 300 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Power is transferred to the wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox and an adjustable all-wheel-drive system.

You can choose the base variant, the LE Hybrid trim, starting at $23,050, and enjoy a range of standard features. These include wireless Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, and adaptive cruise control. At the midrange, the SE trim is offered at $25,240 and gives buyers features like keyless entry and bolder front seats. Topping the lineup is the XLE trim, priced at $26,850, which comes with features like heated front seats, blind-spot monitoring, and a moonroof.

Toyota GR Corolla Circuit Edition Returns For 2024 With New Blue Paint

The Toyota GR Corolla Circuit Edition is making a comeback in 2024 with some exciting updates. This hot hatch stole the show when it was first introduced last year. The base Core model lacked features, and the Morizo Edition, although well-equipped, was expensive and limited to just 200 units in the US. But now, there’s good news for fans of this special edition. The GR Corolla Circuit Edition is back for 2024 and comes with a few new features.

One of the first things you’ll notice is the paint. The Circuit Edition now features the eye-catching Blue Flame hue, which is similar to the paint used on the GR86 and the base Corolla Hatchback for 2024. Additionally, the car is equipped with new 18-inch BBS wheels, previously seen on the Morizo Edition, which may be discontinued. The body of the Circuit Edition boasts a forged carbon roof, a larger rear spoiler, and new black graphics on the rocker panels that extend out to meet the “GR-FOUR” emblem.

The interior updates are more subtle but equally stylish. The cabin now includes blue stitching on the door panels, steering wheel, gear lever, and seats, adding a touch of sportiness to the design. The shift knob also features a new blue stripe down the center, matching the Blue Flame exterior. On the tech front, the eight-speed JBL premium audio system is now a standard feature.

Under the hood, there are no mechanical changes. The GR Corolla Circuit Edition still packs a punch. It retains the same turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine from last year, generating an impressive 300 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain is paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission and an adjustable all-wheel-drive system. The front and rear limited-slip differentials remain in place.

The GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition continues the tradition of offering unique versions of the Supra since its relaunch in 2019. Over the years, Toyota has introduced special editions like the Launch, A91, A91 Carbon Fiber, and A91MT. The GR Supra has also undergone continuous improvements, with upgrades to its power, handling, and the addition of new models like the 2.0-L 4-cylinder and the Manual Transmission option. In 2020, Toyota GAZOO Racing started producing a GR Supra GT4 model for racing.

Customers can expect the GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition to arrive at Toyota dealerships in the fall of 2023. Pricing details for the special edition model and the complete 2024 GR Supra lineup will be announced at a later date.

Blast From the Past

The Toyota Supra first went on sale in 1979 as the Toyota Celica Supra in the U.S. The first-generation model, also known as the Mark I (MkI) Supra, featured a luxury, rear-wheel drive sports car design. It underwent several changes during its short production run and eventually became known as the A50 Celica Supra. It featured a 2.6-liter inline-six engine and was available with both manual and automatic transmissions.

In 1982, the second-generation A60 Celica (MkII) Supra was introduced. This model featured a 2.8-liter 5M-GE twin-cam straight-six engine and had a completely redesigned aerodynamic body. It included features like retractable headlights, an independent rear suspension, and a more aggressive overall look.

In 1986, Toyota introduced the third-generation A70 Supra (MkIII), dropping the Celica name and positioning it as a high-performance sports car. The A70 Supra featured a sleek, aerodynamic body with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produced up to 230-hp with the twin-turbocharged variant. It also introduced advanced features like anti-lock braking system (ABS) and an electronically moderated suspension.

The fourth-generation A80 Supra (MkIV) arrived in 1993. It featured a timeless design, two choices of inline-six engines (naturally aspirated or twin-turbocharged), and advanced features like electronically controlled suspension and driver/passenger-side airbags.

After an absence of nearly two decades, the Toyota Supra made its triumphant return in 2019 as the A90 GR Supra (MkV). It featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with up to 335-hp and 365 lb.-ft. of torque, delivering exhilarating performance. The GR Supra was the first model globally badged under TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s (GR) brand and marked Toyota’s commitment to driver-centered sports cars. Since then, Toyota has continued to enhance the GR Supra, introducing more powerful models, adding a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder variant, and offering a Manual Transmission option.

In addition to the road-going GR Supra models, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing also developed the GR Supra GT4 EVO for racing. The GT4 model allows professional and amateur drivers to compete in GT4 racing categories worldwide and has achieved success in various races and championships.

With the introduction of the 2024 GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition, Toyota celebrates the Supra’s legacy while delivering a thrilling sports car experience to enthusiasts.
