Vauxhall Showcases Latest Electric Vehicles at 49th National Association of Police Fleet Managers’ Conference

  • Vauxhall displays its latest electric vehicle range at the 49th National Association of Police Fleet Managers’ Conference
  • The conference reaffirms Vauxhall’s position as a supplier to the UK’s Police Forces
  • Over 100 Vivaro Electric vans, the top-selling e-LCV in the UK, have been adopted by police forces, along with more than 200 Vauxhall Corsa Electrics
  • Forces are showing interest in the upcoming release of the Astra Electric, set to arrive later this summer

Vauxhall is currently exhibiting its latest range of electric vehicles at the 49th National Association of Police Fleet Managers’ Conference (NAPFM) in Telford on July 4th and 5th.

The brand is showcasing its diverse and expanding range of electric vehicles, including a marked Corsa Electric patrol car, Vivaro Electric cell van, and the upcoming Astra Electric. Vauxhall’s special vehicle operations team, led by Richard Abbott, Head of Specialist Fleet, will also be present at the event.

Vauxhall’s participation in the conference underscores its longstanding association with the UK’s Police Forces. As police fleets across the country transition to electric vehicles at a rapid pace, Vauxhall has become a key partner to a number of forces. Starting from next year, Vauxhall will offer an electric version of every vehicle in its lineup and will become an electric-only manufacturer by 2028.

Currently, over 100 Vivaro Electric vans are in use by police forces in the UK, with the first ones deployed over a year ago. In addition, more than 200 Corsa Electric vehicles have been utilized as neighborhood patrol cars since 2021. The upcoming release of the Astra Electric has also generated interest among police forces, ahead of its arrival later this summer.

Prior to its release, the Astra Electric is being modified by fleet specialists to suit police requirements.

James Taylor, Managing Director of Vauxhall, stated, “Vauxhall has had a long-standing association with the UK’s Police Forces, and we are pleased that the forces continue to choose Vauxhall as they transition to electric vehicles. Our presence at the 49th National Association of Police Fleet Managers’ Conference helps demonstrate the range and capabilities of our expanding lineup of electric cars and vans at this critical time.

“Vauxhall is currently one of the few companies in the UK that can offer an electric variant across its entire van range, with the Vivaro Electric being the best-selling electric van in the country. With over 100 already serving as police vehicles, it’s another testament to the capabilities of the Vauxhall electric range.”

Here’s Why China Has Significantly More EV Models Than The U.S.

China is currently leading the electric vehicle (EV) race. There’s no denying it and that’s the reality whether you like it or not. Whether that will be sustained in the years to come is still unknown, of course, but in the here and now, China is the world’s EV hotspot. Thanks to government policies and the realization that they can’t compete with other nations who already have nearly a century of experience with the internal combustion engine (ICE), China built an economy around EVs and the components needed to build one. The result? China is the world’s biggest EV market, accounting for more than half of global EV sales in 2022, and that also means their EV choices are far more diverse than any nation–more so the United States.

China Has No Legacy, So It’s Building One

Okay, so the word “choice” could be an oxymoron since government policies led Chinese automotive companies to develop EVs and then make its citizens buy them. Decades and billions of dollars later, there are already more than 100 EV companies in China all vying for the money of its citizens. This is on top of prominent Chinese premium EV brands like Nio, Xpeng, and Li Auto who are making headlines globally, while other more mainstream brands like BYD, GWM’s Ora, and Geely’s Zeekr are already taking away market share from Volkswagen–the biggest automaker in terms of overall sales in China.

Or at least that used to be the case. BYD has dethroned Volkswagen to become the best-selling automaker in China, thus creating a problem for the German brand that used to command a significant market share in China. With Volkswagen having fewer and at the same time, more expensive EVs than BYD, you could say that the downfall of the brand in the world’s biggest EV market is already unsurprising. Ask anyone why they like a car from a certain nation, and you’ll probably end up with remarks on German cars being luxurious and extraordinarily stable at high speeds; Italian cars being beautiful and resonant in terms of engine noise; or Japanese cars being highly tunable and reliable. China? Well, their brands don’t carry decades of legacy, which in the EV age was a good thing for them. Ferrari, for instance, is known for its singing V-8s and V-12s, but if you take that away, what defines Ferrari? On the other hand, Chinese EV startups are still building their legacy, giving them infinite room to innovate and carve out their own identity at a time when everyone else is still protecting their identity from the ICE age.

Strength In Numbers… And In Innovation

HiPhi

China’s wide range of EVs not only outnumbers that of what the United States has to offer but the design and technology that’s been poured into their EVs is also unbelievably good. Nio is one of the most prominent premium EV brands in China, and people are willing to pay Tesla money for its EVs. The brand’s hallmark features like its cute Nomi personal assistant and battery swap technology that Tesla has abandoned are stuff you won’t find in EVs from Western brands.

What about in terms of design? China’s EV brands also have you covered. With so much choice in the first place, there’s practically an EV for every design taste. Perhaps one of the EV brands that stand out in China in terms of design is HiPhi. With three models called the HiPhi X, HiPhi Y, and HiPhi Z, boring is one adjective you will never associate with how they look. A lot of car enthusiasts complain about how cars look too similar nowadays. Well, HiPhi seems to have gotten the memo and none of their cars conform to generic cookie-cutter standards. From aggressive lines, rakish curves, and even LED taillights that are able to display pre-programmed GIFs or animated icons, HiPhi is able to push the boundaries of design and not conform to how the world sees car design.

Off-roaders are currently a sensation in North America, and you can bet that China’s EV start-ups have them, too. One of the most recent to make headlines worldwide is the BYD YangWang U8. Comical name aside, the U8 is part of BYD’s new YangWang sub-brand of high-end EVs, including the U9 supercar. Even though this is a large off-roader, it has supercar-like specs with its quad-motor 1,100-horsepower drivetrain and three-second 0-62 mph time. It can even 360-degree tank turns and float on water thanks to the body being waterproof.

And The Chinese Market Has Spoken, Too

It’s common knowledge that China is also the world’s biggest car market, which is why a plethora of global brands treat China as an important market for their bottom line. This is especially true for German luxury brands, where they’ve practically doubled down in their operations in China thanks to Chinese buyers considering these cars as their aspirational vehicles. Unfortunately, these brands saw disappointing foot traffic at the recent Auto Shanghai 2023. With the traditional designs of German luxury cars and their lack of EV options (Porsche even chose the show to hold the global unveiling of the Cayenne, which is not available as an EV), wealthy Chinese buyers instead lusted over the booths of brands like Nio, Xpeng, and Li Auto.

That was the case when New York Times interviewed the Cao family living in Shanghai. Formerly the owner of two Porsches, Mr. Ben Cao downsized to one Porsche 911 and the other car is now an electric luxury SUV with a range-extender gasoline engine from Li Auto called the L9. The reason why he chose the L9? Mr. Cao says that most designs of foreign automakers are dull. “They are far behind, no matter whether it is the U.S. ones and even the German ones,” he said. “They don’t even seem to be in the same age.”

Foreign automakers in China are introducing EVs that look like their gasoline counterparts in a bid to create a gradual transition, but for Chinese buyers, these cars end up looking too boring and not groundbreaking enough. As mentioned, since Chinese EV start-ups have freedom from legacy, this gives them room to be creative unlike the established foreign brands whose cars suddenly seemed out of date. This is a sentiment echoed by Felix Kilbertus, Chief Creative Officer at Pininfarina. He told the New York Times at the Auto Shanghai 2023, “Some of that comes from the freedom from legacy.”

But, There’s A Catch

In order for these Chinese EVs brands to compete with established brands globally, they have to not just offer better products but also sell them at a lower cost than established brands. As a result, most of these Chinese EV startups, with the exception of BYD, are generating losses instead of profits. Nio, however, is finally narrowing down its losses and expects to be profitable by the end of 2023. It must be noted that this pattern of losses and then eventually becoming profitable is the same path that Tesla took when the brand was launched by Elon Musk. Also, with more than 100 EV start-ups in China, choices for EVs are indeed very diverse, but it also means that market saturation for EVs is going to come sooner rather than later.

Thankfully, in the United States, there are also a couple of EV start-ups like Lucid and Rivian who are making waves with their vehicles. Like China’s EV start-ups, these two brands still aren’t profitable, though they aim to eventually make a profit in the coming years. Ford and GM have also doubled down on their EV development, which means while the United States still won’t have as many EV choices as China right now, that gap will definitely be narrowed down eventually.

Don’t Slip Up: Common Car Care Mistakes to Avoid This Monsoon

Discover essential tips and expert advice to keep your vehicle running smoothly and protect it from potential damage caused by the rain

During the monsoon season, it’s important to give your vehicle extra attention to ensure its performance, safety, and longevity. In this article, we will discuss the most common car care mistakes to avoid during the monsoon. By learning from these mistakes, you can save yourself from costly repairs and keep your car in good shape throughout the rainy season.

Neglecting Regular Washing

Don’t assume that the rain will clean your car for you. In fact, rainwater can contain harmful pollutants and acidic elements that can damage your car’s paint. It’s important to regularly wash and wax your vehicle to maintain its shine and protect the paintwork. Don’t forget to wash the tires and wheels as well.

Skipping Tire Maintenance

Wet roads increase the risk of hydroplaning, which can result in losing control of the car while braking or changing direction. Make sure your tires have proper tread depth and are properly inflated. Fresh treads are deeper and provide better water dispersal. Also, remember to rotate your tires regularly for even wear and better traction.

Wonky Windshield Wiper

If your wiper blades are streaky and worn out, they can compromise visibility during heavy rainfall. Replace them if they leave smudges or make unusual noises. Consider using a rain repellent solution on the glass surfaces to enhance visibility and help water droplets roll off.

Overlooking Proper Drainage

Clear clogged drainage channels, including those around the sunroof and windshield, to prevent water leakage into the interior of your car. Inspect and clean the gutters to ensure water flows away from your vehicle. This is especially important if your car has a sunroof, as improper maintenance can lead to water damage and rust.

Failing to Protect the Interior

Moisture can seep inside your car during the monsoon season, leading to unpleasant odors and potential damage to your upholstery. If you live in an area with frequent rainfall, consider investing in waterproof seat covers to protect the interior from rainwater and mud. Switching to rubber mats can also help protect the interior in the long run.

Ignoring the Battery

The monsoon weather can be harsh on your car’s battery. Regularly check the battery terminals for corrosion and ensure a strong connection. Consider getting a battery check-up to avoid unexpected breakdowns.

Overlooking Undercarriage Cleaning

If your car is parked in a waterlogged area or if you’ve driven through standing water, it’s important to clean the undercarriage to remove debris and protect vital components. Allowing debris to linger can cause rust issues and damage important parts of your vehicle.

Forgetting the Emergency Kit

Be prepared for unexpected situations. While new cars usually come with a basic first aid kit, it may not be enough during the rainy season. Keep essentials like a flashlight, emergency tire pump/repair kit, first-aid supplies, jumper cables, and a rain poncho or umbrella in your car.

Remember, taking preventive care of your car can go a long way in ensuring its performance and longevity, especially during the monsoon season. Stay proactive and enjoy a safe and trouble-free driving experience!

Singer’s DLS Turbo: Crafting The Ultimate Air-Cooled Porsche 911

# Singer’s DLS Turbo: Crafting The Ultimate Air-Cooled Porsche 911

Singer Vehicle Design, a luxury restorer based in California known for its expertise in air-cooled Porsche 911s, has unveiled a stunning evolution of the Dynamics & Lightweighting Study (DLS). In response to client requests, Singer has introduced the DLS Turbo, offering custom restorations and modifications for these iconic Porsche cars. This upgrade is a tribute to the victorious 934/5 endurance racers from the 1970s, combining the thrill of the past with the performance of the present.

![Image02](https://cdn.motor1.com/images/mgl/KbB0kG/s5/image02.jpg)

The Porsche 911, originally a naturally aspirated model, has undergone continuous polishing over time to achieve optimal performance on both roads and tracks. In the mid-1970s, the turbocharged 911 variant emerged, gradually evolving into the dominant Type 934/5 racer in 1977. With Singer’s new restoration services, owners of the Type 964 Porsche 911, produced between 1989 and 1994, can now send their sports cars for a personalized and high-performance upgrade. Each car is disassembled meticulously, down to its steel monocoque.

![Image20](https://cdn.motor1.com/images/mgl/2NAroM/s5/image20.jpg)

During the restoration process, the interior and exterior bodywork, along with all mechanical components, are removed and assessed. The chassis is cleaned, reinforced, and prepared for subsequent restoration stages. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is used to determine the optimal aerodynamics of the carbon fiber bodywork. Features like the central front intake, hood vent, rear fender intakes, and NACA ducts are designed to enhance cooling performance.

Owners can choose between track-focused or road-focused restorations. The Blood Orange model is tailored for track performance and includes a high-downforce rear wing and a track-oriented front fascia. On the other hand, the Moet Blanc model is designed for road-focused driving and features an aero-optimized rear ducktail spoiler and a road-oriented front fascia. Singer’s restoration and modification services start with the owner’s original Type 964 engine, which is stripped down and reassembled with high-performance components to maximize its potential. The enhanced 3.8L flat-six engine now incorporates twin turbochargers, resulting in power outputs exceeding 700 HP at more than 9000 rpm.

Singer’s restoration services offer personalized customization for both the exterior and interior presentation, allowing owners to select specific paint, leather, and material finishes. The cost of Singer’s restoration services varies, and only a limited number of restorations are commissioned. Interested parties can experience Singer’s reimagined 911 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed or the Monterey Peninsula Car Week in 2023. Singer Teases Porsche 911 With Bold Design Features

Singer Vehicle Design has given us a sneak peek at its latest reimagined Porsche 911, and it’s definitely catching attention. The vehicle is set to make its debut on Tuesday, June 27th.

The teaser image reveals the rear fender, which boasts a wide flare with a prominent front intake. And let’s not forget about the massive wing sitting on the rear deck. The bright orange color adds an extra touch of flair.

One of the most intriguing features of this Porsche 911 is its center-lock wheels. They have a captivating basketweave pattern with a deep dish design. The color transitions from bronze to dark green, complemented by a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

Unfortunately, there are no further details available at this time. However, looking at Singer’s previous builds can give us an idea of what to expect. The company is currently focusing on turbocharged vehicles and has temporarily paused orders for the 911 Classic Study. As of early 2022, Singer had 70 reservations for turbocharged models, which are equipped with either a 450 horsepower or 510 horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter flat-six air-cooled engine. These vehicles offer a choice between rear- or all-wheel-drive layouts and come with a six-speed manual gearbox.

When it comes to customization, Singer allows buyers to tailor their car to their preferences. From suspension tunes to interior amenities, customers have a wide range of options. Whether you want a comfortable grand tourer for the road or a more aggressive track-focused setup, Singer can deliver.

Judging by the bold design elements like the fender flares and wing, it seems that this particular customer opted for a track-honed setup. However, it’s also possible that they desired a comfortable ride with a striking exterior appearance.

Singer previously caught our attention with the debut of its first reimagined 911 Cabriolet. This model featured a Cadiz Red body, a prominent whale-tail spoiler at the rear, and a cabin adorned with a combination of black leather and red plaid, accented by wood trim. Its turbocharged engine churned out 510 horsepower.

Gone are the days when the X1 is the humblest of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) brood of the BMW fleet. Aside from impressive 2023 BMW X1 specs sheets, the new iteration of the X1 represents a big leap in design that is meant to showcase the ride’s more adventurous character. Compared to the older model, the new X1 is 1.7 inches longer (177.2 inches), 0.9 inch wider (72.6 inches), and 1.7 inches taller (64.6 inches).

The bolder design makes use of more sculpted surfaces. The distinct kidney grille complements the more pronounced front end of the new BMW X1. The sides also evoke a more rugged look with flared wheel arches and a long roofline. Meanwhile, the rear further emphasizes the wider profile of the compact SUV manufactured by BMW at its Regensburg plant in Germany.

Other elements such as the standard 18-inch rims, black trim on the lower edge of the X1’s body, and exciting headlight design go consistent with the muscular stance of the ride.

The boxier dimension of the new BMW X1 translates to a roomier interior that seats five adults with enough headroom and legroom to boot. The seats in the 2023 BMW X1 were newly developed. Perforated leather-alternative SensaTec completes their tailored look, and more importantly, they were engineered to ensure you’re comfortable even during long drives.

This means the third-generation BMW X1 boasts of bigger cargo space than its top competitors such as the Audi Q3 (23.7 and 48 cubic-feet) or the three-row Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class (12.4 and 62 cubic-feet).

A clean dashboard layout will greet you when you enter the cabin of the X1. Other notable elegant yet functional design elements include a floating armrest, smartphone tray, slim air vents, door trims, enough room for coffee cups or water bottles, and ambient lighting.

The BMW Curved Display runs with the iDrive 8 that’s now seamlessly compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Note that the iDrive rotary controller is gone. The latest system is geared toward intuitive touch and encourages users to use voice control to make the most of the tech-forward features of the vehicle. The crisp and responsive display and customizable graphic layout allow you to easily monitor the vehicle’s status or toggle functions and features that fit the driving situation.

On top of the 2023 BMW X1 specs is a potent powerplant. Under its hood is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The TwinPower BMW engine boasts 241 horsepower at 4,500 to 6,500 rpm and a 295 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. Despite being heftier, the 2023 BMW X1 consumes just around 3.6 gallons per 100 miles. It has a fuel economy rating of 25 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway, or 28 MPG combined city/highway EPA rating.

The 2023 BMW X1 comes with the carmaker’s intelligent all-wheel drive

The 2023 BMW X1 xDrive28i, as the name suggests, is an all-wheel drive vehicle. The xDrive system intelligently sends power to all four wheels of the vehicle depending on the driving conditions. This ensures you maximize the traction while the vehicle remains stable and agile. In normal driving conditions that do not require power on all wheels, the system only sends power to the front wheels. However, during more challenging road conditions, the vehicle shifts the power to its rear wheels to improve traction and directional stability.

BMW redeveloped and improved the X1’s front and rear axle with positive effects on its performance, steering feedback, stability, and efficiency. The damping system has also been re-engineered to reduce body movement over bumps and better handle corners.

Why The Chevy Blazer EV Is Better Than The Ford Mustang Mach-E

When looking for an electric vehicle, it can be difficult to decide which one is right for you. With so many options on the market, each with different features and capabilities, making a choice can be challenging. Two of the most well-known automotive brands, Chevy and Ford, have joined the electric vehicle market with their versions of EVs – the Chevy Blazer EV and the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The Blazer EV from Chevrolet is set to compete head-to-head with the popular Ford Mustang Mach-E. While both models have their merits, it’s important to understand which features make each option a better choice for those seeking an EV.

How Better Performance And Faster Charging Make The Chevy Blazer EV Unique

Front three-quarters view of 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV RS in Iridescent Pearl Tricoat

The Chevy Blazer EV and the Ford Mustang Mach-E offer multiple motor and battery options, ranging from front-wheel drive to full electric all-wheel drive. In terms of performance, the Blazer EV surpasses the Mustang Mach-E, especially at its top trim level (SS) which offers 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque. This kind of power allows the Blazer EV to accelerate from 0-60 mph in under four seconds, comparable to the Mustang Mach-E’s GT version. Why The Hyundai Santa Cruz Just Can’t Compete With American Trucks

There is nothing more quintessentially American in the vehicle universe than the pickup truck. Most of the top-selling vehicles in America are full-sized pickups, such as the Ford F-Series, Chevy Silverado, and Ram 1500. Mid-sized pickups also make it into the top ten list. At the opposite end of the spectrum, ranking low on these lists is the compact pickup.

The Hyundai Santa Cruz seems to be positioned to attempt to change this dynamic, and in doing so, change the bigger-is-better world of American pickups. Does it have the image, features, and specs needed to accomplish this goal in the land of wide open spaces and brawny trucks? Sadly, it does not seem to have what it takes.

With the Santa Cruz, Hyundai is big game hunting in the largest segment of the American vehicle market with a pint-sized predator. We all know what will happen when a fox takes on a grizzly. The Santa Cruz is a marvel of pickup downsizing. It’s a beautiful vehicle with plenty of luxury, and cool tech, and is fun to drive.

J.D. Power even rated it as one of the most reliable pickups on the road. So what’s not to love? In almost every way, the Santa Cruz is more a car than a truck, and in that lies its difficulty in appealing to people who love trucks. Except for gas mileage, in the eyes of a truck lover, it’s one truck compromise after another.

Why Americans Love Pickup Trucks, And The Santa Cruz May Break Your Heart

American full-sized pickups are just as luxurious as any car but also strong, bulletproof, versatile, and durable (think Ford Tough). How can a compact pickup like the Santa Cruz compete with a huge luxury battleship that can take a beating?

There are almost as many reasons why Americans love full-sized pickups as there are different models. For many truck buyers, pickups are the Swiss Army knife of vehicles. With one truck, you can rule all the roads and carry all the loads. There is nothing a full-sized pickup can’t do except possibly find a large enough parking space close to your preferred entrance.

With a full-sized pickup, you can haul the kids and all their friends in the cab while hauling enough construction material in the bed to build them a tree house. You’ll have enough ground clearance and 4×4 power to go off-road almost anywhere, as well as make it safely home through snow-covered roads without ending up in a ditch. You could even connect a snow plow and blaze your own trail.

Driving a full-sized pickup, you will not feel like a bite-sized appetizer in the land of giant trucks. If protection from wild bumpers and wilder road rage matters to the potential buyer, bigger always feels safer, whether accurate or not. When it comes to trucks in America, perception is king.

Does the Santa Cruz deliver comparable hauling capacity, off-road ability, bigger is safer perception, or have enough space for the whole gang as a full-sized pickup? Sadly, it does not. How can it compete with something almost twice its size? A stock Santa Cruz, with its slightly below-average ground clearance of 8.6 inches, is not on many lists of the best off-road trucks, while many full-sized and mid-sized pickups top those lists.

The Santa Cruz is also hurt by an impression of being underpowered compared to its larger brethren. In showrooms filled with big V-6 and V-8 pickups, the Santa Cruz’s four-cylinder engine just doesn’t provide enough perceived fire in the belly. Even the turbocharged 2.5-liter four with 281 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque seem weak by comparison, and this weakness appears confirmed by its towing capacity.

Compared to typical full and mid-sized American trucks, the Santa Cruz feels more like it was designed for the urban cowboy and cowgirl lifestyle than people who get their boots dirty. All this does not make it a bad vehicle, and it does not mean you can’t go off-roading with your Santa Cruz, but it does seem to put it at a serious competitive disadvantage in the eyes of the typical American truck lover. The Santa Cruz is a gorgeous, well-made piece of metal, and maybe that’s why it will break many hearts. It’s got the looks but not the coveted truck oomph.

It’s A Pickup Truck That Can’t Haul Your Cargo Or Your Friends And Family

Most people in the American truck market likely view the Santa Cruz more as a compact compromise than a full-blooded, born in the U.S.A. pickup truck. The Santa Cruz, with its limited towing capacity of 3,500 to 5,000 pounds, cannot even trailer most mid and full-sized pickups. Compared to the over 10,000 pound towing capacity of full-sized pickups, the Santa Cruz feels like it’s missing that critical towing tool that makes a pickup the Swiss Army knife of vehicles. So if you want to pull anything more than smaller travel trailers or boats, the Santa Cruz is not the best truck for the job.

When most truck lovers think of a four-door pickup, they imagine a spacious crew cab with over 40 inches of rear legroom. On paper, the dimensions of the Santa Cruz’s four-door cab sound fine, with 36.5 inches of rear legroom, but one look inside sends a different cramped message. Again, it’s a case of perception. Can four or even five adults fit inside this compact truck? In theory, yes, but it doesn’t look like they will enjoy a long ride in the back.

  • Hip room: 53.5 inches

For many American truck shoppers, the Santa Cruz’s pint-size pickup bed is likely the biggest obstacle of them all to true love. One of the reasons people buy pickups is to have the option of hauling big things around in that big open pickup bed. It really doesn’t matter that most people use their pickups to haul little more than bags of groceries on a regular basis. It’s the potential that counts. Once again, it’s the Swiss Army Knife effect.

Not that many years ago, the standard size of a pickup bed was eight feet. That’s changed, and long beds are now 8 feet or more, standard beds are 6.5 feet, and short beds are 5.8 feet. In this field, the Santa Cruz clocks in with only 4.3 feet of bed space. That’s half the length of a long bed. This is not a truck that’s going to be hauling larger pieces of furniture, big household appliances, construction materials, or even luggage for a family of four on a road trip. With its 27 cubic feet of cargo capacity under its included tonneau cover, this is a truck that does not even give you the enclosed cargo capacity of many compact hatchbacks.

Goldilocks, the Three Bears, and most American truck buyers would have a hard time considering the enclosed cargo capacity of the Santa Cruz anything other than ice-cold porridge. Again, none of this makes the Santa Cruz a poor choice for many people. It’s just one more thing many American truck customers will find missing from their must-have list.

RELATED: Ford Maverick Vs. Hyundai Santa Cruz: Which Is The Better Compact Pickup?

This Hyundai Compact Pickup Truck Is Neither Truck Nor A Car

Could American truck lovers learn to love a pint-sized Santa Cruz? If sales figures are any indication, the answer is no. Even among compact pickup trucks, the Santa Cruz is being outsold. The Ford Maverick is arguably the closest competitor to the Santa Cruz. In 2022 Ford sold 74,370 Mavericks, while Hyundai sold 36,480 Santa Cruz pickups. In that same year, a total of 2,702,515 pickups were sold in America.

So the Santa Cruz garnered only 1.3-percent of that pickup market. By comparison, in 2022, Ford sold 653,957 F-Series pickups which equals about 24-percent of the market, while the Chevy Silverado got 19-percent and the Ram 1500 took home 17-percent of all pickup sales. In 2022, only two ICE powered pickups had lower sales figures than the Santa Cruz.

So the Santa Cruz does not appear to have what it will take to attract American truck buyers in droves. Smaller is probably not the answer for breaking into the American pickup market. In the future, long before 2035 and the phase-out of ICE, big pickup trucks in America will have to become more energy efficient, but it’s unlikely that will be accomplished with smaller engines in smaller packages like the Santa Cruz. That route simply won’t fly in the land of the freeway and home of big open spaces.

For the American pickup lover, improved energy efficiency will come from electrification that delivers even more horsepower and more fun per mile. Until then, the bottom line is that the Santa Cruz may be perceived as neither a typical pickup nor a typical car, and as neither fish nor fowl, it risks satisfying few people at the American truck-buying dinner table.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car?

Switching to an electric vehicle (EV) not only offers environmental benefits but also reduces running costs. While the cost of living crisis has affected both EV and ICE (internal combustion engine) car owners, fuel costs continue to impact ICE car owners more heavily.

Charging an electric car at home is often cheaper than at public charging stations. This is especially important considering that more than 90% of EV drivers primarily charge their vehicles at home. By charging overnight when electricity rates are lower, EV owners can start each day with a full charge.

However, the cost gap between running an EV and an ICE car is closing. Initially, the higher purchase price of electric cars compared to their fossil fuel counterparts affected the cost difference, with a battery-powered Peugeot e-208 costing an additional £11,000 compared to the petrol version. Additionally, using public chargers can be more expensive, especially rapid DC units that can charge up to 80% capacity in less than half an hour.

With the UK Government planning to ban the sale of pure ICE cars by 2030, and energy markets experiencing global events, it is crucial to understand the costs associated with charging an EV.

How much will it cost to charge my car at home?

The majority of EV owners charge their cars at home, saving money compared to traditional petrol or diesel cars. The cost of charging at home depends on the car being charged and the electricity supplier’s tariff. Even with recent increases in electricity prices, EV owners still save money compared to filling up a traditional car.

For example, charging a 64kWh Kia e-Niro with a claimed range of 281 miles would cost approximately £20 for a full charge, based on the current average cost of 34p per kWh (according to the Government’s Energy Price guarantee as of the first quarter of 2023). While this is more expensive than a couple of years ago, when off-peak tariffs were as low as 12p per kWh, the cost of a full charge is still reasonable compared to fueling an equivalent petrol hatchback for the same distance, which would cost around a third more.

What’s Causing the Delay in New Car Deliveries? It’s a Railway Shortage, Not Semiconductor Delays

The auto industry is facing a new obstacle as a scarcity of railroad cars is resulting in delays in delivering new vehicles. Due to this shortage, approximately 70,000 new vehicles are stranded across the country, unable to reach dealerships. Concerned about this issue, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, the auto industry’s lobbying group, has requested the intervention of the US Surface Transportation Board.

This scarcity of rail cars is particularly troubling because freight rail typically transports nearly 75 percent of new vehicles and handles 1.8 million carloads of auto parts annually. The backlog of finished vehicles is disrupting the automotive supply chain, which is still recovering from the shortage of semiconductor chips. The delays in delivering vehicles are significantly impacting suppliers, employees, and the overall US economy.

The problem revolves around the shortage of autoracks, specialized rail cars that carry vehicles. Rail transport is preferred over carrier trucks due to lower costs and faster delivery times. An autorack rail car can transport 12 to 18 vehicles, compared to a truck hauler that can only carry a maximum of seven to eight vehicles.

The scarcity of rail cars is a complex issue due to the extensive rail network in North America and the complexities of rail shipping. Rail shipping involves multiple destinations and routes, making it a challenging puzzle to coordinate. Autoracks are part of a shared pool administered by a company called TTX. Manufacturing new autoracks takes two to three years, making it a non-quick fix.

The problem originates from a combination of factors. One notable factor is that the rebound in new-vehicle production after the semiconductor chip shortage has exceeded most railroads’ forecasts. Additional issues have arisen due to changes in supply chain patterns, such as redirecting vehicles through west coast ports instead of the east coast, resulting in longer rail car journeys than anticipated.

Meanwhile, several automakers are still dealing with the aftermath of the microchip shortage. Volkswagen stated earlier this year that the chip scarcity will continue to affect car sales in 2023. Automakers like Cadillac, Ford, and Genesis have also mentioned that the shortage has forced them to limit or exclude popular features on certain vehicles.
