Ruf Tribute – A 550-HP Homage to Classic Air-Cooled Porsches

In 1998, the production of Porsche 911s with air-cooled flat engines came to an end. The last model, known internally as the 993, marked the end of an era for waterless engine-powered two-door cars.

Porsche enthusiasts who share a deep love for air-cooled engines, tracing back to the original Volkswagen Beetle, are willing to spend a significant amount of money on well-preserved or special edition air-cooled 911s. Recognizing this passion, Ruf, a renowned Porsche specialist and maker of the iconic Yellowbird, has decided to revive the air-cooled flat-six engine in the Ruf Tribute, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the model.

The Ruf Tribute features a rear-mounted 3.6-liter powerplant, designed by Alois Ruf Jr., the company’s founder. The engine is equipped with twin turbochargers, billet-aluminum heads, four-cam three-valve technology (a first for air-cooled engines according to Ruf), variable valve timing and lift, and a dry-sump oil system.

Singer’s DLS Turbo: Crafting The Ultimate Air-Cooled Porsche 911

# Singer’s DLS Turbo: Crafting The Ultimate Air-Cooled Porsche 911

Singer Vehicle Design, a luxury restorer based in California known for its expertise in air-cooled Porsche 911s, has unveiled a stunning evolution of the Dynamics & Lightweighting Study (DLS). In response to client requests, Singer has introduced the DLS Turbo, offering custom restorations and modifications for these iconic Porsche cars. This upgrade is a tribute to the victorious 934/5 endurance racers from the 1970s, combining the thrill of the past with the performance of the present.

The Porsche 911, originally a naturally aspirated model, has undergone continuous polishing over time to achieve optimal performance on both roads and tracks. In the mid-1970s, the turbocharged 911 variant emerged, gradually evolving into the dominant Type 934/5 racer in 1977. With Singer’s new restoration services, owners of the Type 964 Porsche 911, produced between 1989 and 1994, can now send their sports cars for a personalized and high-performance upgrade. Each car is disassembled meticulously, down to its steel monocoque.

During the restoration process, the interior and exterior bodywork, along with all mechanical components, are removed and assessed. The chassis is cleaned, reinforced, and prepared for subsequent restoration stages. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is used to determine the optimal aerodynamics of the carbon fiber bodywork. Features like the central front intake, hood vent, rear fender intakes, and NACA ducts are designed to enhance cooling performance.

Owners can choose between track-focused or road-focused restorations. The Blood Orange model is tailored for track performance and includes a high-downforce rear wing and a track-oriented front fascia. On the other hand, the Moet Blanc model is designed for road-focused driving and features an aero-optimized rear ducktail spoiler and a road-oriented front fascia. Singer’s restoration and modification services start with the owner’s original Type 964 engine, which is stripped down and reassembled with high-performance components to maximize its potential. The enhanced 3.8L flat-six engine now incorporates twin turbochargers, resulting in power outputs exceeding 700 HP at more than 9000 rpm.

Singer’s restoration services offer personalized customization for both the exterior and interior presentation, allowing owners to select specific paint, leather, and material finishes. The cost of Singer’s restoration services varies, and only a limited number of restorations are commissioned. Interested parties can experience Singer’s reimagined 911 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed or the Monterey Peninsula Car Week in 2023.
