2024 Volkswagen Tiguan PHEV Seen Testing Under Discrete Camouflage

We now have a glimpse of the upcoming third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, as spy shots reveal the plug-in hybrid version of the SUV in both left- and right-hand drive setups.

The Tiguan PHEV bears a striking resemblance to other variants of the new model. The charging port is conveniently located on the driver’s side front fender. The front end features a wide fascia with chrome elements shaped like brackets on the outer edges. Volkswagen has cleverly disguised the upper grille using decals, and the headlights have distinctive rectangular lamps.

2024 Skoda Kodiaq Specs Released, PHEV Gets 62-Mile Electric Range

Skoda unveiled the Kodiaq in September 2016 as a larger version of the Volkswagen Tiguan. In April 2021, the spacious SUV received a facelift. Now, in June 2023, we’re getting a sneak peek at its successor before the official reveal in the fall. The second-generation model will have an evolutionary design, with no major changes in appearance or specifications.

Although the car is partially camouflaged, the disguise is thin enough to give us a clear view of the exterior design. The 2024 Kodiaq will maintain its recognizable look and will not adopt the Modern Solid design language that Skoda has teased for its upcoming EVs. The familiar double headlight design specific to SUVs will be retained, along with the wide corporate grille. If they are genuine, the vertical air curtains in the front bumper will improve aerodynamics by directing the airflow.

2024 VW Tiguan Rendered With Sleek Body After Recent Teaser Images

The Tiguan, which was originally launched in 2007, is one of Volkswagen’s most important models. However, it has been experiencing a decline in sales in the last three years, indicating the need for a new generation model. Volkswagen has been diligently working on the third-generation Tiguan, and now we have a pretty accurate preview of what this vehicle could look like.

The renderings above, provided by Kolesa.ru, show a sleeker-looking model compared to the current Tiguan. These digital drawings are based on recently released teaser images of the crossover, which featured a completely camouflaged prototype. As can be seen from the images, the new Tiguan will have a less boxy design and will adopt an ID.4-inspired front fascia with sweptback LED headlights connected by a LED strip.

In addition to its improved aesthetics, the new Tiguan will also be slightly larger than its predecessor. Volkswagen has already announced that the MQB Evo-based vehicle will be 32 millimeters (1.25 inches) longer, with a total length of 4,551 mm (179.1 inches). It will also be 5 mm (0.2 inches) taller, measuring 1,640 mm (64.5 inches). However, the width and wheelbase will remain unchanged at 1,939 mm (76.3 inches) and 2,681 mm (105.5 inches), respectively.

The updated exterior look will feature new HD matrix headlights, a first for the Tiguan. While the renderings don’t provide a detailed view, each headlight cluster will have 19,200 micro-LED elements, allowing the unit to illuminate the road up to 500 meters (1,640 feet) ahead.

Details about the powertrain options of the new Tiguan are still limited. However, it is expected to offer gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid engines, as well as front- and all-wheel-drive versions. The 2024 Tiguan is anticipated to be the final Tiguan model with a combustion engine, as Volkswagen plans to cease offering ICE-powered cars in Europe by 2033.

Volkswagen Teaser Could Be Tiguan, Promises “Something New” On June 15

We know Volkswagen has something cooking with the Tiguan. Numerous camouflaged prototypes have been caught on camera, using clever disguises to make the next-gen model look much like the current one. Now, a curious teaser video from Volkswagen shows a simple sketch of a vehicle against a blue background, and it could be our first taste of how the new SUV will look. Moreover, we may not have long to wait before learning more.

Posted as a YouTube short on the VW News channel, we get only a small clip showing white lines on a blue background. However, the menagerie of lines come together at times to show a vehicle. Our screengrab at the top of this article catches two prominent moments, showing the grille and a good portion of the front. One might think we’re looking at a car, but the outline of roof rails confirms this is something a bit bigger.

Volkswagen Teaser

Beyond the visuals, VW delivers a bit of interesting information as well. We’re promised “something new” which isn’t exactly a revelation here, but then a date of 15 June 2023 pops up. A quick glance at the calendar shows us that’s tomorrow as this article publishes. We haven’t heard anything regarding an imminent debut, so it’s unclear if we’re about to get full disclosure or some new information regarding future announcements.

If this is the next-gen Tiguan, we can expect a familiar overall shape that embodies an evolutionary approach to design. The fact that VW can apply stickers to various areas on prototypes to make them look like the current model means the formula won’t be shaken too much. We have identified smaller headlights, and we think a thinner upper grille is in store, augmented by a larger grille down low. The teaser video supports these theories, and previous spy photos have revealed a completely revamped interior with a larger tablet-like center display.
