The 2024 Skoda Kodiaq has finally made its global debut, featuring an evolved exterior design, fresh cabin, plenty of new features and multiple powertrain options. This is the first major update for the Skoda flagship SUV since its launch in 2016. Here are 5 things you should know about the second-generation Skoda Kodiaq.

All-new Design

While the design of the new Skoda Kodiaq is significant, it still retains typical Skoda design elements such as the butterfly grille design. However, the new Kodiaq now features a sleeker split headlight setup upfront, along with a redesigned lower bumper that incorporates a honeycomb design pattern. That air dam now flows into the sides of the bumpers with air curtains.

Along the profile, the 2024 Kodiaq has a lot of resemblance to the outgoing version, but things change when you move towards the C-pillar and the base windowline rises up for a tapered aesthetic. The updated SUV also features newly designed 20-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, the new Kodiaq now gets C-shaped connected LED taillights and a new bumper. Here too, we can see the evolution of the SUV’s exterior to be sleek and sharp.

Offers More Boot Space

The existing Skoda Kodiaq offers a boot space of 270 litres with all three rows up. Now the seven seater variants of the 2024 Kodiaq boasts a boot space of 340 litres with all three rows in use. That’s 70 litres more boot space than before. When the third-row seats are folded, its boot space figure increases to 845 litres, again an increment of 80 litres here.

Revamped Cabin

Skoda has completely changed the cabin of the new-generation Kodiaq, which not only features a multi-layered dashboard layout, but also utilizes sustainable materials inside the cabin. The main highlight is the free-standing 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The drive selector is now on a stalk behind the steering wheel for a cleaner centre console. Meanwhile, the climate control section below the central vents now features multifunctional rotary dials with informative colour displays.

Other features onboard include a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, ambient lighting, a branded audio system, powered front seats, ventilated and heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless phone charger (for two at a time), and USB-C fast chargers. It also gets a heads-up display for the first time as an optional extra.

In terms of safety, the 2024 Skoda Kodiaq includes up to nine airbags, electronic stability control, hill hold assist and ABS with EBD. The updated Skoda SUV also features advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) like automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane assist and parking assist functions.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain is equipped with a 25.7kWh battery pack, enabling a 100km electric-only range. Additionally, it boasts fast charging capabilities of up to 50kW. It is unclear how many of these powertrain options will be available when Skoda offers the new-gen Kodiaq in India. 

Expected India Launch & Price

Skoda could launch the new Kodiaq in India in June 2024, and its prices are expected to start from Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom). In India, it will take on the Toyota Fortuner, Jeep Meridian, and MG Gloster.

New Skoda Kodiaq vRS to offer 268bhp petrol power and 4WD

Skoda is developing a high-performance vRS version of its new Kodiaq SUV, which is expected to be powered by a pure-petrol engine.

The next-generation Kodiaq will be launched with three powertrain options: pure-combustion, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid. The most powerful version will feature a turbocharged petrol engine delivering 201bhp to both axles.

Although there won’t be a dedicated performance model available at launch, Skoda is actively working on a replacement for their successful first-generation hot SUV. The previous model was initially offered with a diesel engine before being updated with a petrol engine producing 242bhp, similar to the Octavia vRS.

Johannes Neft, Skoda’s technical development boss, confirmed the development of the performance SUV, stating, “We are working on it.” Insiders suggest that the positive sales of the first Kodiaq vRS have highlighted the demand for a successor, which could be introduced as early as 2024.

While Neft did not provide specific details, he stated that the new model might not necessarily utilize a plug-in hybrid powertrain. He also implied that it would likely feature a four-wheel-drive system. The most probable engine option is the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 268bhp, used in the closely related Volkswagen Tiguan and derived from the Golf GTI.

This would offer a significant power increase compared to the previous vRS model and, when combined with the traction-enhancing 4WD system, should achieve a 0-62mph time of around 5.5 seconds and a top speed near 155mph.

Interestingly, the new Kodiaq already offers an advanced Dynamic Chassis Controller system that uses twin-valve dampers to enhance cornering and stability. This feature would likely play a crucial role in a dedicated performance variant.

Like its predecessor, the new Kodiaq vRS will distinguish itself from the standard model with sporty styling elements such as unique bumpers, wheel designs, and contrasting trim. It will continue to be a niche offering as a sporty family SUV with the option of seven seats. However, Cupra, Skoda’s sister brand, has achieved success with its own high-performance crossover, the Formentor. Additionally, Volkswagen is rumored to be considering a revival of the full-performance Tiguan R.

2024 Skoda Kodiaq: More Space and PHEV Power

The new, second-generation Skoda Kodiaq is larger and more advanced than its successful predecessor. It also introduces plug-in hybrid power for the first time. The new Kodiaq shares the same platform as the recently revealed Volkswagen Tiguan.

While the Kodiaq shares its platform with the Tiguan, it has its own unique design inspired by Skoda’s new-era design ethos. Skoda boss Klaus Zellmer said that the new Kodiaq offers more space, features, and efficiency, taking the Skoda features customers appreciate to the next level.

One of the standout features of the new Kodiaq is its design, which is influenced by the ‘Modern Solid’ philosophy seen in last year’s Vision 7S concept. This gives the Kodiaq a rugged and utilitarian appearance. The car features squared-off wheel arches, a hexagonal grille, a sculpted bonnet, and a new corporate font for its badging.

Skoda’s clean new logo also makes its first appearance on a production car with the new Kodiaq. Additionally, there is now an option for an LED light strip on the front end, bringing it in line with its electric Enyaq sibling.

The design principles of the second-generation Kodiaq prioritize both practicality and aerodynamics. Despite its blocky appearance, the car has achieved significant aerodynamic advancements through features such as the sloping roofline, active cooling shutters, sleek mirrors, a rear wing, and cleaner-lined bumpers. Skoda claims a drag coefficient of 0.282 for the new Kodiaq.

Alongside the design overhaul, the new Kodiaq offers an increase in overall dimensions. It is 61mm longer than its predecessor and has a wheelbase of 2791mm, providing more space for passengers and an increased boot capacity.

The long-awaited 2024 Skoda Kodiaq has finally arrived, following an extensive teaser campaign. As a more spacious alternative to the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan, this midsize SUV features an evolutionary exterior design and an updated interior that prioritizes screens while retaining traditional controls. Starting with its exterior, the 2024 Skoda Kodiaq has been lengthened by 2.4 inches (61 millimeters), resulting in an overall length of 187.3 inches (4758 mm). The wheelbase remains unchanged at 116.9 inches (2971 mm). Interestingly, the width of the vehicle has actually decreased by 0.7 inches (18 mm) to 73.3 inches (1864 mm), while the height has also been reduced by 0.6 inches (17 mm) compared to the previous model, now measuring 65.3 inches (1659 mm).

Skoda is set to unveil two new models this fall – the Kodiaq and the Superb. Before their launch, these vehicles underwent extensive testing in various climates, including freezing Arctic conditions and scorching heat in Arizona.

The Czech automaker incorporates virtual testing of new models around four years before they hit the market. After that, real-world testing takes place about two years ahead of the official launch. Over a span of two years, the Kodiaq and Superb covered over one million kilometers (621,000 miles), while the automaker simulated 40 years of actual usage through additional durability and material evaluations conducted on test rigs and in laboratories.

Total overhaul for interior of 2024 Skoda Kodiaq PHEV

The interior of the next-generation Skoda Kodiaq has been previewed by the Czech firm, with new images revealing that it will retain physical dial controls for critical functions.

The three dials, located between the centre console and the dashboard, can be customized to control different functions. Official images show the system set up to manage the climate settings for the front occupants, with stereo volume control between the two dials.

The dials on either side of the front occupants can control the cabin temperature, seat heating or seat ventilation, based on user preference. The central controller, meanwhile, can adjust the fan speed, air direction, volume of the sound system, selected driving mode, or the zoom level of the sat-nav map.

The new images also reveal that the Kodiaq will feature a large 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10-inch digital instrument display.

In addition, the automatic gear selector has been relocated from the centre console to a stalk on the steering wheel, providing more legroom for the front occupants.

Connectivity has also been emphasized in the design of the new Kodiaq. USB-C ports are featured on the rear-view mirror and centre console, which also integrates a 15W wireless phone-charging box.

Skoda has released more images of the second-gen Kodiaq still covered in camouflage. From what we can see, the new model’s design is more of an evolution rather than a complete overhaul. The SUV retains the same butterfly-shaped grille (albeit slightly larger), LED headlights with integrated LED DRLs, and a redesigned front bumper with the ADAS radar in the center.

Skoda unveiled the Kodiaq in September 2016 as a larger version of the Volkswagen Tiguan. In April 2021, the spacious SUV received a facelift. Now, in June 2023, we’re getting a sneak peek at its successor before the official reveal in the fall. The second-generation model will have an evolutionary design, with no major changes in appearance or specifications.

Although the car is partially camouflaged, the disguise is thin enough to give us a clear view of the exterior design. The 2024 Kodiaq will maintain its recognizable look and will not adopt the Modern Solid design language that Skoda has teased for its upcoming EVs. The familiar double headlight design specific to SUVs will be retained, along with the wide corporate grille. If they are genuine, the vertical air curtains in the front bumper will improve aerodynamics by directing the airflow.

2024 Skoda Kodiaq SUV Spotted Testing at the Nurburgring

Skoda is set to unveil the next-generation Kodiaq SUV later this year. Despite already teasing the model, development work is still ongoing. Recently, a new set of spy photos captured the redesigned vehicle being put through its paces at the Nurburgring race track.

The Kodiaq is seen here still wrapped in tight-fitting, full-body camouflage. Although the coverings prevent us from seeing the finer design details, these will likely be revealed during the official debut. The three-row SUV appears to have similar proportions and grille to its predecessor. However, its headlights showcase a new design, while the front bumper features tall vertical intakes positioned towards the outer edges.
