This New Report Reveals the Surprising Impact of Paint Color on Resale Value

According to a recent report, the choice of paint color can have a significant effect on the resale value of a vehicle. Surprisingly, gold-colored vehicles experience the highest depreciation, losing 25.9% of their value over three years. This translates to a substantial difference of $11,546, which is over 1.2 times the average depreciation rate. Brown is ranked as the second worst color in terms of depreciating value, while black comes in third. It might be surprising to some, considering the prevalence of black cars, but this is largely due to their popularity rather than consumer preference.

Similarly, silver performs poorly in terms of retaining value among minivans, drop-tops, and off-road trucks. “Safe” colors like silver and black, which are widely accepted, actually rank near the bottom of the list. It appears that their commonality in the market undermines their ability to maintain value.

The supply and demand dynamics of color preferences may change over time, potentially altering the rankings in future reports. Even if people’s aesthetic preferences remain constant, the availability of certain colors can easily shift, and this could impact the resale value. It is feasible that a future analysis, such as one in 2024, may find a new color surpassing yellow as the most sought-after paint option for pre-owned vehicles.

Alpina B5 GT 2023 first drive

Alpina, a German automobile manufacturer known for its luxurious interiors and bespoke craftsmanship, will produce less than 6000 cars before BMW takes over in 2026. The future of Alpina after the transition remains uncertain, as it is unclear whether the mechanical excellence for which the company is renowned will continue to be prioritized over profits.

Out of the limited production run, only a small number will be the B5 super-saloon model. Based on the outgoing M550i, the B5 is a performance-focused car that embodies Alpina’s philosophy of being incredibly fast yet understated. It is a flagship model for the brand.

Alpina B5 GT

The current model of the B5 is a perfect blend of a supercar’s speed and a limousine’s comfort. While it may not handle like BMW’s M5, it offers excellent body control, adjustability, and precise steering. This makes it an exceptional choice for all types of driving.

Now, Alpina introduces the B5 GT, which builds upon the strengths of the regular B5 while adding some extra features. This special model serves as a final tribute to Alpina’s involvement with the G30 5 Series and the culmination of six decades of building cars based on BMW platforms.

Only 250 units of the B5 GT will be produced, primarily in Touring estate form, and all of them have already been sold. Deliveries are scheduled to start later this year, but customers who have selected the full Lavalina leather interior may have to wait until the end of 2024, as Alpina’s meticulous craftsmanship takes time.

Mechanically, the B5 GT is mostly similar to the previous B5, which is no longer available. However, it features a new intake and some electronic enhancements that increase the power output of the twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine from 612bhp to 625bhp. This makes it the most powerful car in Alpina’s history, with an official top speed of 205mph, although unofficially it can reach 220mph.

But what truly sets this car apart is its astonishing mid-range performance, especially in real-world driving situations. The torque output is exceptional, with the B5 GT producing 13% more torque than the M5 CS. With 627lb ft available from 3500rpm, it rivals the power of Aston Martin’s recent DBS 770 Ultimate.

Fiat has officially unveiled its smallest electric vehicle, the Fiat Topolino quadricycle. This compact car measures 2.53 meters (99.6 inches) in length.

The Dolcevita model comes with a large canvas roof, ropes instead of doors, and other unique features.

Both variants of the Fiat Topolino are priced at $10,770 (9,890 euros) in Italy. The Topolino is slightly more expensive than the base Citroën Ami but offers higher levels of equipment. Additionally, it exceeds the features of its Opel Rocks Electric twin.

Rolls-Royce Spectre prototype

The Rolls-Royce Spectre prototype, designed for Rolls-Royce customers who typically own multiple cars, is expected to have limited usage as an electric vehicle. Although Rolls-Royce owners only drive around 3000 miles per year in their vehicles, the Spectre is equipped with a peak charge rate of 195kW during rare visits to fast chargers.

Featuring a 700kg battery positioned beneath the cabin floor, the Spectre’s design incorporates a flat underside to achieve a drag coefficient of 0.25. The aerodynamic sculpting includes the widest and sleekest Rolls-Royce grille to date, tail-light housings that minimize air resistance, and a gently sloping tail that meets impact regulations. Even the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy ornament has undergone extensive wind tunnel testing.

Traditionally, Rolls-Royce coupés have prominent grilles and long bonnets, however, as Rolls-Royce aims to transition to fully electric vehicles by 2030, the necessity of these design elements may change.

The Spectre’s side profile showcases the longest doors ever fitted on a modern Rolls-Royce, measuring 1.5m each. Inside, the lavish interior accommodates four passengers, featuring familiar chair styles and luxurious surface materials, ensuring existing Rolls-Royce customers feel at home. CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös emphasizes the desire for customers to always recognize the Rolls-Royce experience, even blindfolded (not recommended during test drives).

The interior boasts broad leather seats, thick woolen carpets, and authentic metal or composite major switches. Preserving the traditional Rolls-Royce feel, the Spectre aims to recreate the experience of driving a mid-century Rolls, despite incorporating a new drivetrain.

The Spectre uses a version of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system, offering both a touchscreen and a rotary controller. Rolls-Royce has customized the appearance and software for intuitive navigation, and the climate dials provide a satisfyingly analogue experience. Compared to BMW’s i7 or the Mercedes S-Class, the Rolls-Royce approach offers a refreshing option for luxury, allowing users to disconnect from the digital world and enjoy a quieter, more serene driving experience.

Must-Know Facts About the Dodge Tomahawk

Concept vehicles don’t come much crazier than the Dodge Tomahawk, a four-wheeled ‘motorcycle’ powered by an 8.3-liter V-10 engine from a Dodge Viper. The Dodge Tomahawk’s top speed was rated at 420 mph, but no one ever was foolish enough to try it out. Had someone tried it, it could’ve been the fastest motorcycle in the world. Only one was built by Dodge, but nine others were constructed by Neiman Marcus and sold for $550,000 each!

The Dodge Tomahawk was unveiled in 2003 as a one-off concept vehicle. It was designed by Chrysler Group employees Bob Schroeder and Dave Chyz. While it gained massive publicity for the Chrysler Group, it was never intended for production. However, nine replicas were built by Neiman Marcus and sold to enthusiasts. Here are 15 must-know facts about the Dodge Tomahawk:

Is The Dodge Tomahawk A Car Or A Motorcycle?

The Dodge Tomahawk has a car engine and four wheels, but it has the design and styling of a motorcycle. It is considered a motorcycle because it has one seat, two-foot pedals, handlebars, and handbrakes, which are all defining characteristics of a motorcycle.

Dodge Tomahawk Had A Truly Unique Suspension System

The Dodge Tomahawk featured a unique suspension system to accommodate its four wheels. It used independent suspension on both the front and rear, allowing a 45-degree lean in either direction without lifting any tires off the ground. This ensured that all four tires remained in contact with the surface during cornering.

Due to its status as a concept vehicle, the Dodge Tomahawk was not road legal and did not undergo street-use testing or conform to regulations. Even the replicas sold by Neiman Marcus were not street legal. The bikes were marketed as “rolling sculptures,” but buyers would have to make modifications to make them road legal.

Dodge Claimed the Top Speed Of The Tomahawk Was 420 MPH

The Dodge Tomahawk was claimed to have a top speed of 420 mph, based on the horsepower of the Dodge Viper engine. However, the motorcycle was never officially tested on the track to verify this top speed.

Tomahawk Had A Racing Transmission To Handle The Excessive Torque

To handle the torque and power of the V-10 engine, the Dodge Tomahawk featured a foot-shifted, two-speed aluminum-cased sequential racing-style transmission. The clutch was activated by a hand lever, and the rear tires were driven by a chain.

Tomahawk Had Upgraded Brakes To Stop The Excessive Power

The Dodge Tomahawk was equipped with 20-inch stainless steel disc brake rotors, one per wheel. The front and rear brakes had two four-piston calipers each, for a total of 16 pistons. The braking system was designed to effectively stop the powerful motorcycle.

The Dodge Tomahawk Was Only Produced For Four Years

While Dodge only built one concept vehicle, Neiman Marcus produced nine replicas of the Dodge Tomahawk between 2003 and 2006. These replicas were sold for $550,000 each and were built due to demand and positive response after the concept vehicle’s unveiling in 2003.

No One Ever Published A Road Test

As the Dodge Tomahawk was not road legal, no publication or media outlet was able to conduct a road test. Therefore, the top speed and practicality of the vehicle remain unknown, as it was never officially tested on the track.

Dodge Built The Tomahawk To Make A Point

The Dodge Tomahawk was built as a concept vehicle to showcase the engineering and technical capabilities of the Chrysler Group. It was designed to create interest and demonstrate the company’s ambition and innovation in the automotive industry. The Tomahawk represented Dodge’s willingness to take risks and think outside the box.

The Dodge V-10 Engine Was Unveiled In 1992

The Dodge V-10 engine, powering the Tomahawk, was first unveiled in 1992. It initially featured a displacement of 7,990cc and produced 400 horsepower. The engine was later upgraded to produce over 500 horsepower in its third generation.

The Engineering For The Dodge Tomahawk Was Pretty Wild

The engineering behind the Dodge Tomahawk was impressive and unique. To keep the bike low, the engine was changed to dry sump lubrication, and the cooling radiators were placed in the “V” of the engine. The bike featured innovative swing arms, hub-center steering, and rim-mounted disc brake rotors. The rear suspension could be locked, allowing the Tomahawk to stand independently without a side stand.

The Tomahawk Chassis Components Were Milled From Billet Aluminum

The main chassis components of the Tomahawk were milled from billet aluminum. Starting from massive 750-pound billets, they were machined down to just 25 pounds each, resulting in lightweight yet strong components to support the V-10 engine.

The Dodge Tomahawk Is Enormous

The Dodge Tomahawk weighs approximately 1,500 pounds, making it significantly heavier than traditional motorcycles. The weight is necessary to provide stability and keep the powerful V-10 engine grounded.

The Press Reaction Was Critical

The initial press reaction to the Dodge Tomahawk was critical, with some considering it a wild and outrageous concept. The Tomahawk received mixed reviews, with critics questioning its design and purpose. However, the public’s reaction was more positive, expressing awe and interest in the unique motorcycle concept.

The “Wow” And The “Why” Of The Tomahawk

The Dodge Tomahawk garnered both “Wow” and “Why” reactions from the public. While many were amazed by its design and performance capabilities, others questioned the practicality and necessity of such a vehicle. Ultimately, Dodge created the Tomahawk as an expression of their engineering prowess and a showcase of their innovative spirit.
