Tesla achieves one million sales in Europe ahead of new Model 3 launch

The new Model 3 from Tesla brings several improvements to enhance the driving experience. The 15.4-inch touchscreen has a slimmer surround, while the sound system in the Long Range version now features 17 speakers, upgraded amps, and software for a more immersive and punchy sound. Additionally, the phone call quality is improved with extra microphones for better voice isolation. The on-board Wi-Fi range has been doubled, providing better connectivity for over-the-air updates.

The driver’s controls have been rearranged, with the removal of the stalks on the steering column. The car now predicts the intended direction and requires confirmation by tapping the brake pedal, with a backup slider on the touch screen. The new three-spoke steering wheel includes haptic buttons for controlling lights, indicators, wipers, and cruise control.

Rear passengers now have access to an 8.0-inch touchscreen with integrated air vents on the back of the center console. This allows them to adjust ventilation, heated seats, and even enjoy movies and videos.

In terms of safety, the doors have been reinforced to provide greater protection in side impacts, resulting in a more solid closing sound.

While the Tesla Model 3 still lags behind competitors like the BMW i4 in terms of refinement and perceived quality, Tesla has made considerable progress in closing the gap.

On the electric drivetrain front, Tesla remains a strong contender. The battery capacity and charging speeds have not changed, with the standard version offering 170kW and the Long Range version providing 250kW. However, the improved drag coefficient of 0.219 increases efficiency, resulting in a claimed range increase of 5-8%. The standard rear-wheel drive Model 3 achieves a WLTP claim of 344 miles (up from 305) on 18-inch wheels, while the Long Range version with dual motors offers a claimed range of 421 miles (up from 394). Opting for larger 19-inch wheels slightly reduces the range to 318 miles and 390 miles respectively. Although the Polestar 2 can now achieve similar numbers, Tesla’s real-world efficiency is expected to be superior, making it more cost-effective to run.
