Mopar 340 Vs. 360: Which Is The Better Engine?

The Mopar 340 has its origins with the earlier 318 V8 engine within the LA household. This was already a reasonably good engine, however Mopar wished to make a excessive efficiency model of it. To do that, the corporate took the three.906 bore of the 318 and elevated it to 4.04 inches, however the designers didn’t alter the stroke in any respect, permitting for a larger engine displacement. Mopar additionally understood that there could be a heavier burden positioned on the engine as a result of its efficiency capabilities, so it changed the forged iron crankshaft with a metal one.

The consequence was a relatively spectacular engine that might generate as much as 275 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque — or at the very least that’s what was marketed, as Hot Rod noticed these numbers enhance to 320 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. These outcomes made the engine fairly a pleasant selection for road racers or anybody wanting a light-weight, highly effective automobile.

You would discover the 340 V8 in a number of of the muscle and pony vehicles after its introduction in 1968, together with the Dodge Charger and Plymouth Road Runner; and two years later, Mopar would put out a Six Pack model of the 340, which was unique to the Dodge Challenger and Plymouth Barracuda. As was the case with so many excessive efficiency V8 engines of the time, it grew to become considerably hampered by the emissions laws and oil embargo through the Nineteen Seventies, seeing it section out of manufacturing relatively rapidly. However, this has made it fairly the product on the resale market that you’ll definitely be paying a number of thousand {dollars} to get.

The Biggest Differences Between 392 And 5.7 HEMI Engines

Both engines are big Mopar V8s, and each share numerous purposes. However, the engines are fairly totally different from each other. From the outset, the 5.7-liter HEMI is considerably smaller than the 392 (6.4-liter) V8, and sometimes makes much less energy. The previous adage “there’s no replacement for displacement” applies right here. Next, you must take a look at the applying of every engine. While each HEMIs are comparatively giant V8s which might be definitely able to placing out lots of energy, the 392 is decidedly made for increased efficiency purposes.

As such, the 392 is barely obtainable on Ram 2500 vehicles, SRT Dodges, and a scant few Jeep Wranglers. Those are hardly run of the mill autos. The 392 cubic inch displacement is, in itself, a reference to the 1957 Chrysler 300C, which additionally housed a 392 V8. While not a weak engine by any means, the 5.7 HEMI has a extra humble use case. It’s the bottom engine for increased trim Durango fashions, and obtainable as an possibility on practically each trim of Ram 1500 truck. It’s a workhorse that occurs to be lots of enjoyable.

The 392 is so much larger and extra highly effective than the 5.7-liter HEMI. However, if road cred is your aim, both engine will work — the HEMI badge speaks for itself.

Presumably it is being rescued, however that is not why you clicked this submit.

You need to learn about all of the Hemi vehicles, and there are just a few. The video takes us to a 1968 Dodge Coronet RT that, per its VIN, had a legit 426 cubic-inch Hemi V8 from the manufacturing unit. We say had as a result of the engine is presently not underneath the hood, and that is the identical story for lots of the vehicles featured right here. Among them is a 1969 Dodge Super Bee, a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner that is additionally lacking the hood and grille, and a 1970 Road Runner that really appears fairly good total. Per the VINs, all have been outfitted with Hemi engines.

And then we come to the barn. Tucked inside with lacking physique panels is a 1970 Hemi Cuda, and it is mentioned to be an unique Hemi automobile. It’s parked subsequent to a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T with a 426 Hemi hood, although the video says it did not come from the manufacturing unit that approach. Still, these are two supremely fascinating automobiles within the basic muscle automobile world. Last yr, Broad Arrow Auctions sold a Hemi Cuda for nearly $300,000. And here is one in a barn, bathed in grime with many elements – together with the engine – nowhere to be seen. Ouch.

1970 Plymouth Cuda Hemi

At least it wasn’t in a fireplace. Earlier within the video we see a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner trying principally like a shell. That’s as a result of it burned up in some unspecified time in the future, inflicting important injury to the inside and fiberglass hood. It’s not a Hemi automobile, but it surely’s nonetheless a gem with a 440 cubic-inch “six-pack” V8 from the manufacturing unit that seems to nonetheless be there. Believe it or not, this automobile is slated not for elements however a full restoration. Mopar muscle fans are nothing if not decided.

Here’s hoping a follow-up video comes later exhibiting the eventual destiny of those vehicles. But the clock is ticking. Can any of them be saved in time?
