Sara Sadik to create 2023 BMW Open Work by Frieze. New film and video game, using the new AirConsole technology of the BMW i5 as a playing device, will premiere at KOKO as part of Frieze London.

London/ Munich. BMW and Frieze are continuing their long-term partnership with BMW Open Work by Frieze, which is an annual major art initiative. In 2023, Marseille-based artist Sara Sadik will showcase a film and video game created for the new BMW i5 at KOKO in Camden Town. This innovative multi-platform format, curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini, merges art, technology, and design.

Both works will be premiered during Frieze London, taking place from October 11-15, 2023. This year, the fair will commemorate its 20th anniversary with the most international edition to date, featuring a diverse program of cultural collaborations and events, including the BMW Open Work format.

Attilia Fattori Franchini (Curator, BMW Open Work) expressed her excitement to work with Sara Sadik, who carefully explores the intersection of art, gaming, and digital technology in her practice. Sadik’s project for BMW Open Work 2023 involves a video game specifically designed for the BMW i5, utilizing the car as a unique experiential device, as well as a film to be played in the BMW Lounge. The project will take Frieze in a completely new artistic direction. Fattori Franchini looks forward to seeing this project unfold at KOKO, further reinforcing the commitment of Frieze and BMW to experimental artistic practices.

Sadik’s video and performance practice combines elements of fiction and documentary. Drawing inspiration from video games, anime, science fiction, and French rap, the artist creates immersive stories that revolve around characters striving for moral and physical transformation. The commission for Frieze London features an interactive playable game specifically designed for the new fully electric BMW i5 in collaboration with BMW Gaming and Innovation Lab experts. In addition, a video will be presented on the exterior of KOKO and at the BMW Lounge. The BMW i5 designers will work alongside Sadik to ensure the technical aspects of the game and enhance the gaming experience in the car through sound and light.

Titled LA POTION (EH), Sadik’s commission explores changing emotional states of young male characters through computer-generated scenarios. Her world-building approach visualizes their emotions while examining the construction and performance of masculinity, its ethical and moral codes, and its broader implications for societal structures.

Sadik follows in the footsteps of previous BMW Open Work artists including Nikita Gale (2022), Madeline Hollander (2020-21), Camille Blatrix (2019), Sam Lewitt (2018), and Olivia Erlanger (2017).

Volkswagen partners with Xpeng for Chinese electric cars

Volkswagen has formed a long-term partnership with Xpeng, a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, with plans to build Volkswagen models on Xpeng’s platforms. As part of the partnership, Volkswagen will invest $700 million to acquire a 4.99% share in Xpeng and secure a seat on the company’s board.

The collaboration, described as a “technological framework agreement,” will begin with the joint development of two mid-size EVs exclusive to the Chinese market. These models will be sold under the Volkswagen brand starting in 2026. The partnership aims to expand Volkswagen’s EV lineup to cater to the growing demand in China, in addition to their existing lineup of ID models based on the company’s MEB platform.

Volkswagen is also working on a new platform called SSP to replace MEB. However, due to software issues, the introduction of SSP has been delayed. The collaboration with Xpeng will help bridge this gap and ensure that Volkswagen can continue expanding its EV offerings in China.

Founded in 2014, Xpeng currently offers a range of premium EVs, including the G9 SUV and P7 saloon, in China and select European countries. They recently launched a new SUV called the G6, which features a bespoke platform called SEPA 2.0. This platform enables rapid-charging at rates of up to 480kW with its 800V electrical architecture.

The specific Xpeng platform that will be used for the two planned Volkswagen EVs has not been confirmed yet. This partnership follows Audi’s collaboration with SAIC, the parent company of MG, to develop China-only cars using SAIC’s platforms.

Both Volkswagen and Xpeng will contribute their core competencies to the development of these new EV models. This partnership will allow Volkswagen to enhance its presence and offerings in the Chinese EV market.

BMW Announces New Long-Term Partnership with the Städel Museum

The BMW Group has announced a new long-term partnership with the Städel Museum, one of Germany’s oldest and most renowned museum foundations. To kick off the collaboration, artist Marc Brandenburg has designed an exclusive BMW iX1. Together, BMW and the Städel Museum invite visitors to experience contemporary art in a unique way through the STÄDEL INVITES event series.

In the past year, BMW and the Städel Museum Frankfurt launched the STÄDEL INVITES format. These events, held in conjunction with exhibitions by selected contemporary artists, aim to make contemporary art more accessible to a wide audience in a relaxed atmosphere. The events include live artist discussions, talks, short tours, and music.

As a highlight of the new partnership, Marc Brandenburg, the museum’s collection artist, has designed a BMW iX1. The vehicle will be unveiled on July 11th in the Städel Garden. Brandenburg will explain how he incorporated the elements of time, space, and speed from his artwork into the car design. The Städel Museum will also exhibit Brandenburg’s drawings and video work from October 28, 2021, to January 30, 2022, in the exhibition “Hirnsturm II.”

“We are excited to expand our cultural engagement through a new partnership with the Städel Museum,” said Ilka Horstmeier, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG. The design of the BMW iX1 by Marc Brandenburg signifies the beginning of a long-term collaboration that will offer many inspiring encounters with artists through the STÄDEL INVITES format.

Philipp Demandt, director of the Städel Museum, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership and the BMW iX1 designed by Marc Brandenburg. He highlighted the shared aspiration of the Städel Museum and BMW to inspire quality and people. Together, they aim to venture off the beaten path and explore new possibilities, including joint event series and a film series featuring contemporary artists presenting their works in relation to the Städel collection.

The STÄDEL INVITES series started in October 2022 with artist Michael Müller and will continue with exhibits by Philipp Fürhofer and Miron Schmückle. The series offers an opportunity for visitors to gain insights into the artists’ works and practices, as well as their connections to the Städel collection. The respective artists will also share their ideas and creative processes in the video series “Was bewegt (…)?”

Munich.
Among the many players doing their practice rounds at the BMW International Open on the perfectly manicured Championship Course at Golfclub München Eichenried today were two athletes that usually play on a different lawn: The two Champions League winners Thomas Müller (GER) and Gareth Bale (WAL) played a round of nine holes with title holder Haotong Li (CHN) and the best-placed German in the world rankings, Yannik Paul.

Afterwards, the group marked the symbolic start to “Eagles for Education”. The BMW Group is donating the first 10,000 euros to the tournament charity on behalf of the famous athletes.

The long-term charity campaign “Eagles for Education” is making its debut at the BMW International Open in 2023. The BMW Group will donate 1,000 euros for every eagle achieved during the tournament. This sees BMW intensify its long-standing commitment to education and future opportunities for everyone. The money will go to the organisations “JOBLINGE” and “Kick ins Leben”, with which the BMW Group has been working for many years.

BMW International Open 2023: “Eagles for Education” Campaign and BMW i5 Hole-in-One Award

BMW organizes the BMW International Open from 21st to 25th June 2023 at Golfclub München Eichenried. The BMW Group is committed to providing educational opportunities and is launching its long-term charity campaign “Eagles for Education” at the tournament. For every eagle achieved, the BMW Group will donate 1,000 euros to the organisations “JOBLINGE” and “Kick ins Leben”. The 2023 Hole-in-One Award on the 17th hole will be the first fully-electric BMW i5. Thomas Müller and Gareth Bale tee off in the Pro-Am. Here’s what you need to know about the BMW International Open 2023.

The BMW Group is committed to its social responsibility and is expanding its commitment to the BMW International Open by launching a new campaign. The “Eagles for Education” campaign will donate 1,000 euros to the organisations “JOBLINGE” and “Kick ins Leben” for every eagle achieved during the tournament. The BMW Group’s goal is to provide better career opportunities for underprivileged children and young people. The BMW Group has already raised 44.5 million US dollars (roughly 41.4 million euros) for the Evans Scholar Foundation at the PGA TOUR Playoff event, the BMW Championship.

The BMW i5 will be the Hole-in-One Award if a player scores an eagle on the 17th hole. An eagle on a par-three hole is an ace, and as such, the player who scored the eagle wins the BMW i5. The BMW i5 is the first fully-electric BMW 5 Series and is produced at the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing, where the electric motors and high-voltage batteries for the vehicle are also produced.

The top-class field for the 34th BMW International Open includes Luke Donald, Thomas Bjørn, Edoardo Molinari, Nicolas Colsaerts, Haotong Li, Nicolai Højgaard, Rasmus Højgaard, Robert MacIntyre, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Pablo Larrazábal, Victor Perez, Adrian Meronk, Ryan Fox, and many others.

The BMW International Open has a long tradition of commitment to education. The tournament also features a Pro-Am tournament with sports stars such as Thomas Müller, Gareth Bale, and Martin Borgmeier. The tournament offers free admission to children and young people aged 16 and under and has various activities to inspire the next generation of golfers, including the “Abschlag Schule” project, which involves school classes visiting the tournament.

Visitors to the tournament can also experience the BMW fleet of fully-electric and electrified cars, as well as win prizes in the “Nearest to the Pin” competition and take part in the “Longest Putt Challenge” to win season tickets for the Ryder Cup in Rome. There are many options for following the BMW International Open from afar, including live coverage on Sky, ORF Sport+, and Sport1, as well as a free livestream on BMW Golfsport and Sport1.de.

The BMW International Open will use a fully-electrified BMW shuttle fleet, charged with 100% green electricity. The tournament can be accessed via a free bus shuttle service and parking for visitors is available free of charge in officially marked parking spaces.

The BMW International Open would like to thank its partners, including DP World, Emirates, Five9, NTT Data, Rolex, Visit South Africa, Antenne Bayern, Goodyear, Hilton, and all supplier partners for their support and collaboration.
