Peugeot 208: Europe’s Best-Selling Car Gets Hybrid Powertrains and a Sportier Look

The popular Peugeot 208 has undergone a comprehensive upgrade, including the addition of two new hybrid powertrains, an enhanced exterior design, and various interior improvements.

The new hybrid options, which are also available in the facelifted Vauxhall Corsa, combine 99bhp and 134bhp petrol engines with a six-speed automatic gearbox that features an integrated 48V electric motor. This electrification results in a torque boost at low revs and a 15% increase in fuel efficiency. Peugeot claims that these hybrids operate in pure-electric mode for more than 50% of the time in urban environments.

The existing 74bhp and 99bhp petrol engines remain in the lineup, paired with a five-speed manual and a six-speed manual respectively. However, the 100bhp diesel engine has been discontinued.

The electric variant of the Peugeot 208, known as the e-208, now comes with a new 154bhp motor and a larger 51kWh battery, providing a range of 248 miles on a single charge. Peugeot asserts that the battery can be charged from 20% to 80% in less than 25 minutes using a 100kW charger.

The exterior design of the Peugeot 208 has been updated to match the refreshed 508 and 2008 models. It features a more prominent tri-fang daytime running light signature, a wider front grille, and a rear light bar with three red ‘claws’ extending across the entire width of the boot.

Inside the car, a 10.0in touchscreen is now standard across all trim levels, although a high-definition panel is reserved for Allure and GT models. The distinctive i-Cockpit dashboard design remains, with a small, uniquely shaped steering wheel positioned below the instrument cluster.

A range of advanced driver assistance systems has been added to the Peugeot 208 to meet the new GSR2 safety standards set by the European Union. These include adaptive cruise control, road sign recognition, lane-keeping assistance, and an optional 360-degree parking camera.

The Peugeot 208 is available in three trim levels: Active, Allure, and GT. The price of each trim level is expected to increase slightly. Currently, the 208 starts at £20,610 for the 1.2 Puretech Active and goes up to £34,845 for the e-208 GT.

What to Expect from Samsung Unpacked: Foldable Phones

Before the Samsung Unpacked event on July 26, there have been leaks revealing some interesting details about the upcoming foldable phones from Samsung.

The rumored Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature a significant design change – the two halves of the foldable phones will close shut without any gap. This is a major improvement from previous Samsung foldable phones, which had a V-shaped wedge gap that allowed liquid and solid particles to enter the device. With the new design, the risk of damage from such elements is greatly reduced.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 will also have a larger cover display this time, making it more functional. This is similar to Motorola’s latest Razr-series foldable phone, which also emphasizes a larger cover display for improved usability.

Additionally, the upcoming foldables will come equipped with a new Qualcomm flagship processor, indicating enhanced performance. Leaks also suggest camera upgrades and a larger battery for improved overall experience.

In addition to the foldable phones, there are rumors about the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic making an appearance at the event. Alleged renders of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic reveal a familiar design, including the much-loved rotating physical bezel, which was absent in the previous Galaxy Watch 5 series.

Lastly, there are reports of three tablets in the Galaxy Tab S9 series being unveiled at the Unpacked event. These new Android tablets are expected to follow a similar design pattern to the Galaxy Tab S8 series, with the absence of a pill-shaped camera island. The standard Galaxy Tab S9 is also rumored to have a single rear camera, instead of the dual-camera setup seen in its predecessor.

Alfa Romeo EVs to Adopt Retro-Inspired Aero Look

Alfa Romeo has provided insight into the visual identity of its upcoming all-electric lineup, with the first model expected to launch in 2024 as a compact SUV.

Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, the design director at Alfa Romeo, revealed that his team drew inspiration from the designs of the 1960s and the “Coda Tronca” or “short tail” cars that were prominent during that era.

“These square-tailed cars were groundbreaking designs for their time. The Giulia SZ and TZ from the early 1960s were the first examples,” said Mesonero-Romanos.

He further explained, “While these cars followed Dr. Kamm’s aerodynamic theories, Alfa Romeo conducted its own research during their development. Some cars had portions of their bodies cut off on the side of the autostrada to assess the impact on aerodynamic drag.”

Mesonero-Romanos added, “Our next-generation vehicles will incorporate the Coda Tronca design into our current design language. This will not only enhance aerodynamic efficiency and range but also give the cars a distinctive, classically Alfa Romeo character.”

This approach aligns with the strategy used by brands like Hyundai, which have successfully enticed customers with retro styling in models such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

However, Alfa Romeo’s design director cautioned, “We must be mindful of how much inspiration we draw from the past. As designers, it is similar to being chefs, blending classic ingredients into a ‘new sauce’ that resonates with today’s generation. Nevertheless, the Coda Tronca will be a valuable ingredient for us, and you will see it in several future models.”

Alfa Romeo’s product roadmap includes multiple all-new models in addition to the initial compact EV. These include replacements for the D-segment Giulia and Stelvio in 2025, followed by a completely new E-segment crossover in 2026, which is expected to drive the company’s expansion beyond the European market.

The B-segment SUV slated for 2024, jointly developed with the Jeep Avenger, will kickstart the model renewal program. Although originally intended to be named the Brennero, Mesonero-Romanos stated that the final name, which will be Italian and beautiful, has been decided but cannot be disclosed at this time.
