Mercedes-AMG GT4 EV Spotted as Porsche Taycan Challenger

The Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4Matic+ was unveiled in February 2022 as one of the fastest cars produced by the German automaker. However, even in its most powerful form, it falls short compared to the Porsche Taycan. It appears that Mercedes-AMG is now developing a new and more extreme electric sedan to rival the Taycan. According to initial reports, it will not be called the EQE and will instead be a completely new model.

The spy photos below show what is believed to be the Mercedes-AMG GT4 EV. The final name of the production vehicle is not yet confirmed, but the project is currently referred to as C295 internally. The test prototype still retains the EQE body, but the final design is expected to be significantly different.

Opel Zafira OPC Transformed into a 400-HP Minivan with Turbo Upgrade

The second generation Opel Zafira was introduced in February 2005 and featured a new platform compared to its predecessor. While most of the engines were new, the top-of-the-line 2.0-liter turbo engine was carried over from the Zafira A. Initially, it produced 237 horsepower. However, a German tuning company has now developed a turbo upgrade kit that significantly increases the power output.

TurboZentrum has developed a Stage 2 turbo kit for the Opel Zafira’s Z20LEH four-cylinder engine. The main difference compared to other kits for this engine is the new and optimized size and shape of the compressor wheel. TurboZentrum has designed the kit specifically for the airflow and exhaust specifications of the 2.0-liter turbo engine. The result is an impressive increase in power.

With the turbo upgrade kit, the peak output of the Zafira OPC now reaches 400 horsepower, and the power curve is flatter compared to the stock engine. Additionally, the new turbocharger delivers the same levels of air mass as the stock turbo but at a lower turbocharger speed, reducing the load on the turbo and improving its longevity.

The price of the turbo upgrade kit is $1,972 (1,844 Euros), and there is also a Stage 1 turbocharger available for $1,495 (1,398 Euros). The same engine can also be found in the Opel Astra OPC, allowing for the same performance upgrade in the hatchback variant.

It’s worth noting that the second-generation Zafira was the last to offer an OPC version. The third-generation model was equipped with smaller turbocharged gas engines and a more powerful twin-turbo diesel engine. Opel has since discontinued the Zafira and now uses the name for a slightly larger commercial vehicle, which is also available with a fully electric powertrain called the Zafira Life.

Strong performance under extreme conditions: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen undergoes test drives in the desert.

Munich/Dubai. The vehicles in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet, which launched in February this year, have completed an intensive round of hot-weather testing in the United Arab Emirates for the first time. The car’s fuel cell drive system performed impressively in the face of temperatures rising to 45°C, as well as sand and dust, varying gradients and significant fluctuations in humidity.

The highly efficient fuel cell system, the two hydrogen tanks, the electric motor and the power battery teamed up with the central vehicle control unit to demonstrate their outstanding performance and state of readiness. The Munich-based development team examined both the functionality of all the electric systems under the extreme conditions and the provision of the cooling power to enable the full performance of the vehicle. The vehicles were able to ensure the driving dynamics for which BMW is renowned.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen goes around the world
Vehicles from the pilot fleet are currently in action in Europe, Japan, Korea, China, the USA and the Middle East. The aim is to shine a spotlight on the everyday usability of hydrogen-powered vehicles, and beyond that to gain important knowledge for the development of a potential series-produced model. The BMW Group is using the pilot fleet to provide support on a regional level for the development of a refuelling infrastructure which can be used with 700-bar refuelling technology across all categories of vehicle – from passenger cars and small vans to buses and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Synergies between different areas of application also offer important scope for developing a strong network of suppliers in hydrogen technology and reducing costs.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen combines long-distance capability and short refuelling stops with locally emission-free driving. Provided the relevant framework is in place, the hydrogen fuel cell technology has the potential to serve as another pillar in the BMW Group’s future drive system portfolio.

As part of its ongoing transformation, the BMW Group is applying a “technology-open” approach when it comes to drive systems. The company is therefore adapting to different customer requirements, infrastructure standards and political and regulatory landscapes in the various regions of the world. This flexibility puts the BMW Group in the position to respond quickly to changing requirements in the markets in any situation and to present an attractive offer for as many customers as possible at all times.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen has a fuel cell system generating output of 125 kW/170 hp and a highly integrated drive unit using fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology (the electric motor, transmission and power electronics are grouped together in a compact housing). The output of the overall drive system is 295 kW / 401 hp. The hydrogen needed to power the fuel cell is stored in a pair of 700-bar tanks made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Together, these tanks can hold around six kilograms of hydrogen. This storage capacity gives the BMW iX5 Hydrogen a range of 504 km (313 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

BMW iX5 Hydrogen: Consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 1,19 kg H2/100 km, CO2 emissions combined in WLTP cycle: 0 g/km

The Challenges Ford Faces in Meeting Demand for the 2023 F-150 Lightning

When production of the 2023 F-150 Lightning began, there was an unexpected obstacle in February. A battery fire occurred at the Rawsonville Plant, the facility responsible for manufacturing the vehicle’s battery. As a result, production had to be put on hold while Ford investigated the cause of the fire. During this time, the executive overseeing battery production stepped down, although it is unclear if this decision was related to the incident.

But that wasn’t the only setback in the production of the F-150 Lightning. In June, production was once again paused, this time at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center, where the vehicle itself is manufactured. Ford made this decision in order to expand and retool the production process to keep up with the high demand for the F-150 Lightning. This move was made with the hope of accelerating the release of the vehicle and remaining competitive in the market. Additionally, Ford made the decision to lower the price of the F-150 Lightning to under $50,000, in an effort to make it more affordable for customers.
