Munich. Starting from 1 January 2024, Alexander Buckan will take over as the head of BMW Motorrad Design, replacing Edgar Heinrich. In his new role, Buckan will be responsible for designing all two-wheeled vehicles, rider’s equipment, and accessories within the BMW Group. Heinrich, who has been leading BMW Motorrad Design since 2012, will retire after a successful 35-year career at BMW.
Dr Markus Schramm, head of BMW Motorrad, expressed his excitement about Buckan’s appointment, stating, “We are pleased to introduce our experienced colleague and motorcycle enthusiast Alexander Buckan as the new head of BMW Motorrad Design.” Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design, added that Buckan’s contributions as the manager of the design team make him the perfect choice to lead and bring fresh ideas to BMW Motorrad Design.

Buckan joined BMW Motorrad in 2003 as a transportation designer and has since been involved in the development of various models, including the BMW F 800 GS, BMW G 450 X, BMW R 1200 GS LC, and BMW R 1200 GS Adventure LC.
In April 2015, Buckan was promoted to head of BMW Motorrad Vehicle Design. As the design manager, he collaborated with Edgar Heinrich on projects such as the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100. Buckan was also responsible for the design of BMW’s e-scooters, the BMW CE 04 and BMW CE 02, as well as the upcoming BMW R 1300 GS, which will debut on 28 September 2023 at BMW Motorrad Welt in Berlin.

Edgar Heinrich began his career at BMW Motorrad in 1985 and became a senior designer in 1992. In 2005, he assumed the role of head of BMW Motorrad Vehicle Design and later took over as the head of BMW Motorrad Design. During his tenure, Heinrich played a key role in shaping the brand’s design language and introduced benchmark-setting motorcycles like the BMW R 1100 S sports boxer, BMW K 1200 R naked bike, and the iconic BMW R 1200 GS touring enduro. Additionally, he was involved in the development of HP models, rally motorcycles, electric scooters, and the groundbreaking BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 design concept.
