Macau Grand Prix: Peter Hickman secures fourth victory – BMW racers dominate top four positions

Macau. The motorsport world focused on Macau last weekend as the 55th edition of the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix unfolded as part of the 70th Macau Grand Prix. The race on the Guia Circuit street course resulted in a remarkable top-four lockout for the BMW Racers. Leading the pack was Peter Hickman (GBR), who clinched his fourth Macau victory riding his BMW M 1000 RR for FHO Racing BMW Motorrad Team. In second and third places on the podium were Davey Todd (GBR / Burrows Engineering / RK Racing) and David Datzer (GER / MTP Racing by ZERO UP Penz 13). Hickman’s teammate Josh Brookes (GBR) completed the success for the BMW M 1000 RR with a fourth-place finish.

Uwe Geyer, Head of BMW Motorrad Customer Racing, commended the BMW riders for their outstanding performance in Macau, emphasizing the sensational result of a BMW M 1000 RR top-four lockout. Hickman’s exceptional victory, Todd’s impressive comeback to the BMW racing family, Datzer’s podium finish in his second Macau appearance, and Brookes’ excellent debut in this challenging race were all celebrated as a testament to the successful representation of BMW’s colors in Macau.

Hickman returned to Macau for the first time since 2019, and it marked the first appearance on the Guia Circuit for the FHO Racing BMW Motorrad Team. Amidst this setting, Hickman showcased his prowess by claiming the fastest times in practices and securing pole position.

Hickman led at the start of the race before a red flag prompted a restart. He maintained his lead, eventually finishing with a 28.969-second lead over Todd after twelve laps, securing a convincing victory.

Expressing his joy, Hickman shared, “We’ve had a fantastic result. We’re at Faye’s home event and it’s her proper home track, it’s her city and it’s just fantastic to be first in every single session and winning the race, so I couldn’t really ask for more than that – I’m super happy. The boys have worked absolutely mega, the BMW M 1000 RR has been superb to be honest. The track was a bit bumpier than it used to be, which makes it hard to ride. But the FHO Racing team have got the bike pretty much bang on and I felt really comfortable. Davey obviously gave us a bit of a push to start with, but we could really keep the pace and he couldn’t, so we managed to break away and disappeared up the road and just managed it from there.”

Todd, who experienced a rollercoaster of emotions on race day, overcame a technical issue to secure second place on the podium after a persistent effort from him and his team.

Reflecting on his experience, Todd said, “I wasn’t expecting a day like that at all. It was just one of those so unlucky things at the first start. The guys pushed the bike back to the garage and I felt as if my world had come apart walking back down pit lane. But the team kept going and worked flat out just in case the race was stopped and we could jump in the re-run. And we got back out there. I managed to take it up with Pete for four laps, trying to sit in behind him. I knew that the tyres would come into play and tried to save them as much as I can. I just did not have the tyre to compete at the end. Hat’s off to Pete, he had a great race and thanks to the team for an awesome job.”

Datzer also expressed his excitement after securing his second podium finish in Macau, attributing it to his perseverance and the exceptional support from his team.

“It’s amazing, just amazing”, Datzer enthused on the podium. “After my bad start I thought, oh no, the fast guys are gone. However, I’m blessed to have a great bike which has been prepared by a great team. I worked my way through and to be on the podium again at Macao is a great way to end the event.”

Paul Jordan (GBR / ZERO UP Racing Team by Penz 13) and Sam West (GBR / moto-hub.co.uk) also delivered strong performances, finishing seventh and tenth, respectively, and securing places in the top ten.

Jeep Celebrates Seven Decades on the Rubicon Trail with 70th Anniversary Trail Ride

  • Jeep® brand and Jeep Jamboree celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Rubicon Trail
  • 450 Jeep enthusiasts in 125 Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators marked the Rubicon Trail’s seven-decade anniversary
  • New video takes enthusiasts along the ultimate trail ride
  • The Rubicon Trail located in northern California covers approximately 22 miles with 7,000 feet of elevation
  • Jeep Jamboree operates more than 40 Jeep Jamborees annually

August 31, 2023 – The Jeep® brand and Jeep Jamboree are celebrating 70 years of extreme off-roading adventure this summer. Since 1953, the Rubicon Trail, known as one of the most difficult off-road trails in the world, has been a lifestyle symbol of Jeep 4×4 off-road adventuring for the Jeep community.

This summer, 450 Jeep enthusiasts and their families and friends, driving a total of 125 Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators, celebrated with a special event on the Rubicon Trail’s seven-decade anniversary.

A new video posted on the Jeep brand’s YouTube channel gives a taste of the adventure.

“For more than 80 years, the Jeep brand community has defined the Jeep brand and, for 70 of those years, the Rubicon Trail has been one of the toughest off-road trails in the world. It has become a bucket list item for every Jeep 4×4 customer because of its difficulty and beauty,” said Jim Morrison, Senior Vice President and Head of Jeep Brand, North America.

“Conquering the Rubicon Trail proves that these Jeep vehicles can go anywhere and do anything. The video shows the capabilities of Jeep 4xe vehicles, which are part of our next generation of electrified Jeep 4×4 vehicles that can conquer even the most challenging terrains.”

The Rubicon Trail is located in northern California, near Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It spans approximately 22 miles and offers the toughest off-road terrain, which Jeep Trail Rated 4×4 vehicles are designed to overcome.

Jeep Jamboree covers 17.5 miles of tough terrain on its trail rides, with elevations ranging from 5,400 feet to over 7,000 feet. The Rubicon Trail is widely recognized as the top off-road vehicle route in the United States.

“In 1953, when Mark Smith organised the first Jeep Jamboree with 55 Willys and crossed the Sierra Nevada Mountains via the Rubicon Trail, off-road recreation was born,” said Pearse Umlauf, President and CEO of Jeep Jamboree.

“Willys Motors, the manufacturer of Jeep vehicles at the time, got involved the following year, and Jeep Jamborees have become an off-road tradition ever since. We have seen a surge of interest, especially after the COVID pandemic, with a tremendous demand from people who want to experience off-roading in their Jeep vehicles.”

The Rubicon Trail has been utilized by Jeep brand engineers to develop and test their most capable SUVs, including the iconic Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. The Wrangler Rubicon, introduced in 2002, was equipped with unique features such as Dana 44 axles, lockers, disconnecting sway bar, rock rails, oversized mud-terrain tires, and wheel flares that took off-roading to the next level. The Wrangler Rubicon continues to inspire the brand’s future designs and improvements, based on feedback from enthusiasts and loyal Jeep customers.

Jeep Jamboree
Jeep Jamborees are off-road adventure weekends that bring together outdoor enthusiasts and their Jeep 4x4s. The tradition dates back to 1953, when 4×4 pioneer Mark A. Smith organized the first Jeep Jamboree and led a voyage across the old Rubicon Trail in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Willys Motors, the manufacturer of Jeep vehicles at the time, became involved with the adventure in 1954, and Jeep Jamborees have been a tradition ever since. Jeep Jamboree now operates over 40 events annually and continues to expand its offerings.
