This Lotus EV Charger Adds 89 Miles Of Range In Five Minutes

Lotus is bidding farewell to internal combustion engines with the Emira sports car being the last ICE model from Norfolk. The Geely-owned brand has committed to go all-electric by 2028, starting with the Eletre SUV and Emeya sedan. A smaller crossover and a zero-emission sports car are also in the plans. To support its growing EV portfolio, the British brand is introducing multiple charging solutions.

Addressing charging anxiety, Lotus has developed a liquid-cooled DC charger capable of delivering 450 kilowatts of power. Charging the Eletre R for just five minutes will provide over 88 miles of range. For comparison, Tesla’s Supercharger V3 replenishes the battery for 75 miles of range in the same time while a Hyundai Ioniq 5 gives you 62 miles.

The liquid-cooled DC charger allows the Eletre R to charge from 10 to 80 percent in 20 minutes at 450 kW. At 350 kW, it can extend the range by 74 miles in five minutes. This robust charger is complemented by a power cabinet, also liquid-cooled, designed for rest areas along highways. Furthermore, Lotus has produced a charging unit capable of supporting up to four EVs simultaneously.

These high-power charging solutions are already operational in China and will be rolled out in Europe and the Middle East in the second quarter of 2024. Additional countries outside of these regions will be added later.

Lotus is part of the Geely empire, which also includes Polestar under the same corporate umbrella. Polestar is cooperating with StoreDot to develop a faster charging solution that would add 100 miles of range in five minutes, known as extreme fast charging (XFC). The technology is currently undergoing testing, with engineers claiming it won’t cause battery degradation.

2025 Genesis GV90: Everything We Know So Far

An electric flag bearer arrives as part of the 2025 model year, proudly waving the Genesis flag. This flagship model is a new electric SUV called the 2025 Genesis GV90. The GV90 will be the new crown jewel of the electric SUV market, making other luxury three-row SUVs quake in their proverbial shoes. Are we ready for Genesis to take over the electric SUV market? Ready or not, here comes the GV90.

The new GV90 electric SUV builds on the design language of the G90 sedan, adding more size and some electric elements to make this big and impressive SUV stylish and elegant. Although a modern EV in every way, this Genesis EV delivers the sophisticated build and admirable qualities we love about this brand. Could we see this new lavish flag bearer push other luxury EVs aside? The nearly $100,000 starting price doesn’t suggest affordability, but compared with other top-end luxury electric SUVs, it certainly could be.

New Flagship Styling For The GV90 EV

The 2025 Genesis GV90 introduces itself with a massive triangle-shaped set of LED lights to replace the grille found in gas-powered Genesis models. This is the perfect introduction for the new flagship SUV. Smooth body panels, a few intricate creases, and amazing lighting elements provide excellent styling in an SUV powered by electric motors.

This electric flagship SUV was teased in 2021 when Genesis presented its vision for a sustainable future. This vision included a large SUV that is now known as the new GV90. At the time, the expected front look includes a set of two-bar lighting elements, but some experts expect new styling elements in this flagship SUV that will trickle down to other electric SUVs and cars over the next few years.

How Do You Get Into the GV90 EV?

Genesis is pulling out all the stops with this new electric three-row SUV. Some experts suggest this new SUV could have a set of rear-hinged rear doors and no B-pillar. This setup is called suicide doors, and it offers a large opening to ensure passengers can easily enter the SUV and make their way to the rearmost seats as needed. The electric powertrain of the new Genesis SUV allows for a flat floor in the cabin, which increases the passenger room and comfort offered.

Power, Performance, and Platform

Almost all the Korean electric vehicles in the market utilize the E-GMP platform. Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis are all part of the Hyundai Motor Group, which enables this shared platform to be useful. The new Genesis GV90 could be the first electric SUV from this automotive family to ride on the next generation of this platform (called IMA for Integrated Modular Architecture), making it a trendsetter for other models to follow. Even if this new platform isn’t a reality for the GV90, this three-row electric luxury SUV should be the most powerful SUV from the brand.

How Many Electric Motors?

We expect the new 2025 Genesis GV90 to utilize the same powertrain setup as the smaller Electrified GV70. The GV90 could have a larger battery pack, ensuring it offers more power and performance on the road. The Electrified GV70 has nearly 500 horsepower from the two electric motors that allow this SUV to enjoy an AWD system. If the GV90 has the same 87.2-kWh battery pack as the Electrified G80, it should offer up to 250 miles of driving range. That won’t be enough in 2025, which is why we think this new SUV will have a much larger battery pack.

Where Does The 2025 Genesis GV90 Fit In The Market?

Genesis is still a relatively new name in the luxury vehicle world, but it’s captured the attention of many consumers at every turn. The G70 arrived and won several awards as a compact luxury sedan, proving new names can bring the goods as well as the older brands. The new GV90 should hit the market and go head-to-head with the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and any other three-row luxury SUVs that arrive. It should be interesting to see how well the new GV90 stacks up against the EQS SUV when Genesis releases more data about its new flagship electric SUV.

Could Genesis Add More To The Ride?

The new GV90 will be the fourth and largest EV from this luxury brand. As a large, midsize luxury crossover SUV, this vehicle should include features that will ensure a smooth and comfortable ride on any road. We expect the new GV90 to add a set of air springs and electronically controlled dampers to provide that smooth ride. As we get closer to the release date for this new electrified SUV, we could see additional features to enable the GV90 to drive smoothly and quickly around corners, adding a bit of fun to the mix.

Samsung’s Influence In The Infotainment System

Samsung is a well-respected name in the technology sector, providing various gadgets and tech items around the world. Partnering with Genesis makes perfect sense for both companies. A Samsung OLED display could be exactly what gives the GV90’s dashboard that finished and futuristic appeal. We expect Genesis to find a way to take one step further than its luxury rivals with more advanced tech. A pairing with Samsung is part of that step, but could this new flagship SUV also include the largest screens we’ve seen in an electric SUV? We’ll have to wait and find out.

Speculating The Cabin Details

The new Genesis GV90 is expected to be part of the 2025 model year lineup. Only recently have spy shots been shown of this SUV out on the roads wearing thick testing garb. This means we can only speculate on what the cabin area will offer, but if previous Genesis models are any indication, this flagship SUV will be filled with the most luxurious features and offer a range of sustainable materials for those looking for a luxury SUV that’s eco-friendly.

2025 Genesis GV90 Expected Price And Arrival Date

Genesis

The Genesis GV90 was originally expected to be part of the 2024 model year, but the development of this flagship electric SUV has hit delays, as often occurs, and it should arrive as part of the new 2025 model year instead. This could be perfect timing for the GV90 because Genesis is transitioning to only electric vehicles starting with the 2025 model year.

Adding the new platform could make this transition complete and give the new electric flagship the desired build, driving range, and opulence to take on the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV. Once the new GV90 arrives, other Genesis EVs will also utilize the new IMA platform.

How Much Should The Genesis GV90 Cost?

The new GV90 lineup should skip over the entry-level trims and only bring the Advanced and Prestige trims to the mix. This new luxury SUV should have a starting price of nearly $100,000, but that price will likely be competitive with other flagship electric SUVs. Both trims should come comprehensively equipped with the features, tech, safety, and driving systems desired. Hopefully, the new Genesis GV90 will have more success than the G90 sedan. To date, the G90 hasn’t been a volume model, but the new GV90 could be a volume model and a high-margin electric SUV for this fledgling luxury brand.
