Xpeng unveils new ‘Land Aircraft Carrier’ and six-rotor flying car

Xpeng, a Chinese car maker, has introduced the Land Aircraft Carrier, a hybrid-powered SUV with six-wheel drive. The vehicle can transform into a flying car with the deployment of six rotors for vertical take-off and landing. This innovation is developed by Xpeng Aeroht, the company’s aircraft division.

In addition to the SUV, Xpeng has also revealed advancements to its eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) flying car, initially showcased in 2021.

The Land Aircraft Carrier is specifically designed for emergency services and mountain rescue operations. It features a helicopter-style aircraft or pod that can be deployed from the rear of the six-wheel drive hybrid truck. The concept resembles the Tesla Cybertruck in terms of its profile, with a minimalist, slab-sided body, tinted glass, and sharp swage lines. The design takes inspiration from lunar exploration vehicles.

The Land Aircraft Carrier is equipped with six-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering, and three separate axles to maximize off-road capability and carrying capacity. Xpeng claims that the flying pod can operate autonomously, providing an accessible flying experience.

The eVTOL flying car, on the other hand, incorporates advanced computer systems that allow it to stay airborne even in the event of two rotor failures. It also features a multi-parachute rescue system that can carry up to 1000kg and deploys at a lower altitude of 50m for a more stable touchdown, compared to the industry standard of 200m.

Xpeng has designed the interior of both vehicles to be adaptable for both land and air usage, with components such as the steering wheel and dashboard being adjustable.
