Kawasaki has officially unveiled its first two electric motorcycles, the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1, in the United States market. These bikes have been in development for some time, and Kawasaki has been generating excitement by sharing glimpses of their progress. Back in 2022, Kawasaki joined forces with Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha to work on swappable battery solutions through a new company called Gachaco. Kawasaki mentioned that the Ninja EV and Z EV would have swappable batteries. However, the specific battery details were not initially clear.
Recently, it was revealed that a French company called Forsee Power is supplying the Kawasaki Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 with their own swappable battery packs. These bikes are equipped with a pair of GO 1.6 battery packs, along with the necessary cable and charging dock for off-bike charging. The battery packs are 1.6 kilowatt hour (kWh) 48-volt units that can be swapped up to 10,000 times. Forsee Power is a company that has been around since 2012 and provides batteries for various vehicles, including electric buses, hybrid agricultural equipment, and small electric motorcycles.
In September 2023, Forsee Power announced the opening of a new office in Yokohama, Japan. During the press conference, it was stated that Forsee Power is proud to supply Kawasaki with batteries for the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 electric motorcycles worldwide. Forsee Power chairman and CEO, Christophe Gurtner, expressed his pride in Kawasaki’s decision to electrify their popular Ninja and Z models. This partnership signifies the growing trend of electric motorcycles and their appeal to urban riders.

Although this announcement was more of a teaser and lacked specific details, here’s what we know so far:
Both the Kawasaki Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 are equipped with a brushless electric motor that generates 5 kilowatts (approximately 6.7 horsepower) and can reach a peak of 9 kW (about 12 hp) when needed.
These bikes use twin batteries that are wired in parallel and can be easily removed for convenient off-bike charging.
Similar to most electric motorbikes, the Kawasaki Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 offer a clutchless operation, allowing riders to simply twist the throttle and go. They also have two ride modes, Road and Eco, though specific settings have not been disclosed yet.

Both the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 have a special e-boost button located on the right handlebar, below the twist grip, that enables riders to activate the additional 9 kilowatts of power. By utilizing this boost, these bikes can potentially reach a top speed of 99 kilometers per hour (approximately 61.5 mph). However, sustained use of this feature may result in reduced range, which is common for electric vehicles.
Additional features include a full-color TFT dash, smartphone connectivity, ABS, and brakes sourced from Kawasaki’s existing 400cc lineup. Both bikes also come with a walking mode, which helps riders maneuver the bike at low speeds in both forward and reverse directions.
Kawasaki has chosen its signature Metallic Bright Silver and Metallic Matte Lime Green liveries for the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1, as well as for future electric models in its lineup. The company also plans to offer a charge docking station for convenient at-home or at-work charging.

Kawasaki Germany is set to release a highly exclusive Ninja ZX-10RR WSBK Edition for the 2024 model year. These bikes, developed by the Kawasaki Racing Team at its Friedrichsdorf headquarters, are not just a cosmetic upgrade but come with advanced features like a variable air intake system. Only 10 of these replica machines will be produced and sold to the public.
The Ninja ZX-10RR WSBK Edition is powered by a 998cc inline four-cylinder engine that benefits from upgraded internals provided by Pankl Racing Systems. These upgrades include lightweight pistons, titanium connecting rods, racing camshafts, piston pins with diamond-like coating (DLC), and lightweight yet sturdy valve springs. Additionally, the bike is equipped with Marchesini forged wheels to reduce unsprung weight and enhance its racing performance on the track.
One of the standout features of this limited edition Ninja is the variable air intake system installed in the airbox. While not constantly active, this system can be activated when using the racing engine control unit (ECU) and requires a special wiring harness. The intake funnels are lifted at high RPMs to allow more airflow into the combustion chamber, while at lower and medium speeds, they remain in a low position to optimize fuel-air mixtures for efficient combustion at all engine speeds.
Each of the 10 bikes will feature full World Superbike (WSBK) Kawasaki Racing Team (KRT) graphics, as well as a numbered plaque on the tank indicating its position in the lineup. Customers will also receive a WSBK Edition box containing various goodies, such as signatures from Kawasaki WSBK riders Jonathan Rea and Alex Lowes, a glass block with a laser-etched illustration of the bike, a customized key fob and I-clip, and decal sheets with Rea’s and Lowes’ racing numbers for personal customization.
The retail price for the Ninja ZX-10RR WSBK Edition in Germany is €33,145, including a 19 percent value-added tax (VAT). This approximately converts to $35,824 as of August 28, 2023. In comparison, the regular 2024 Ninja ZX-10RR is priced at €29,995 or around $32,416 in the German market.
Kawasaki unveiled its Ninja EV and Z EV prototype electric motorcycles at EICMA 2022. The company had been secretly working on electric bikes and planned to release them as production models in 2023. If you’re curious about the progress of these bikes, Kawasaki has recently filed type approval documents with Australia’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts.
The approval was granted to Kawasaki Heavy Industries Limited on July 31, 2023, and is valid until July 30, 2030. The approved vehicle is known as the model NX011A, with variants listed as NR011A and NX011A. The NR011A is the Z e-1, while the NX011A is commonly referred to as the Ninja e-1.

The type approval document not only reveals the first images of the completed vehicles but also provides some previously undisclosed details about Kawasaki’s first two production electric motorcycles. While this may not be extremely powerful, it’s important to note that these bikes are designed for commuting and are relatively lightweight for electric motorcycles.
The wheelbase for both the Ninja e-1 and the Z e-1 will be 1,370 millimeters, or approximately 53.9 inches. The curb weight of the Z e-1 is 135 kilograms (297.6 pounds), while the Ninja e-1 is slightly heavier at 140 kilograms (308.6 pounds).
It’s worth mentioning that the weight of electric motorcycles is largely due to the batteries. In 2023, the weight of electric vehicles is mainly attributed to their batteries due to the current energy densities and customers’ concerns about range anxiety. During the public introduction of the project at EICMA 2022, Kawasaki stated that the production versions of these bikes would utilize swappable electric batteries instead of larger, heavier packs to offer a longer range when fully charged.
Swappable electric battery packs have been demonstrated by Gogoro as a viable power source for short-range electric vehicles, particularly for urban commuter vehicles like the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1. However, Kawasaki has yet to announce how it intends to address infrastructure considerations.
