DS Automobiles Reveals DS 7 Vauban: An Armoured Plug-In Hybrid

  • DS Automobiles introduces the DS 7 Vauban, an armoured plug-in hybrid model based on the DS 7 Élysée designed for the French Presidency

After the success of the DS 7 Élysée for the French Presidency, DS Automobiles has announced the DS 7 Vauban, an armoured plug-in hybrid that marks a new collaboration between DS Automobiles and WELP Group.

The DS 7 Élysée is a unique design based on the DS 7 E-TENSE 4×4 300, with added armor, an extended chassis, and special equipment for occupant protection.

The positive response to the exclusive DS 7 Élysée has led to the development of a limited batch of armoured DS 7 Vauban cars. The DS 7 Vauban is based on the DS 7 E-TENSE 4×4 300 and features reinforced materials such as aramids and safety glass, offering a VPAM 4 level of ballistics protection. The interior has also been refined by DS upholsterers.

Additional specifications can be requested for enhanced protection (automatic fire extinguishers, closed-circuit ventilation, siren, intercom, etc.), passenger comfort (extra USB sockets, reading lights, etc.), and vehicle customization (body colors, interior trim, stitching, flag holders).

The DS 7 Vauban is named after a series of forts built in the late 17th century. These forts, designed by Marquis Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, can be found across France and Europe and are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The DS 7 Vauban is manufactured by WELP France in Hérimoncourt, following the acquisition of a former Stellantis site. The first units will be available from April 2024.

DS AUTOMOBILES REVEALS A NEW LIVERY FOR THE DS E-TENSE FE23!

  • DS Automobiles and PENSKE AUTOSPORT unveil the new DS E-TENSE FE23 livery for Formula E Season 10

  • At the wheel of the two single-seaters developed by DS Performance will be Jean-Eric Vergne, Formula E champion in 2018 and 2019, and Stoffel Vandoorne, world champion in 2022

  • The two DS PENSKE drivers will begin the official pre-season tests in Valencia, Spain, on 24 – 27 October

DS Automobiles and PENSKE AUTOSPORT have presented the new DS E-TENSE FE23 livery for Season 10 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

This year, the eye-catching single-seater in the all-electric series enhances its brilliance, elegance, and visibility by reversing its familiar gold and black colors. As a result, the DS E-TENSE FE23 now boasts a dazzling golden look on the front end, sidepods, and entire halo.

Equipped with the same powertrain from Season 9, as all the power units are homologated for two years, the newly-liveried car remains faithful to the French marque’s traditional color scheme and the spirit of the team.

The DS E-TENSE FE23 has been developed by DS Performance, focusing on the most advanced electric technology from DS Automobiles.

Jean-Eric Vergne, the only two-time Formula E champion, and 2022 world champion Stoffel Vandoorne will be at the wheel of the two DS E-TENSE FE23 challengers during the official pre-season tests in Valencia, Spain, on 24 – 27 October.

The first race of Season 10 will take place in Mexico City on 13 January 2024.

Eugenio Franzetti, DS Performance director:

“As always, the livery reveal is a very exciting moment because it represents the official start of a new adventure, new challenge, and new season! So, we start Season 10 with a new DS E-TENSE FE23 that’s even more beautiful than last year’s car. And it’s more visible as well as beautiful because that’s what motorsport is all about. We’re here to give visibility to our brand, DS Automobiles, our partner PENSKE AUTOSPORT, and of course all our sponsors. We’re also working hard to ensure that the DS E-TENSE FE23 goes as well as it looks. The powertrain will be the same as for Season 9, as there is no homologation change this year, but a lot of other work has been done and we will continue to improve the management software. We have big dreams of big success: that’s our goal for Season 10!”

Key figures since DS Automobiles entered Formula E:

  • 105 races
  • 4 championship titles
  • 16 victories
  • 47 podiums
  • 22 pole positions

DS AUTOMOBILES LAUNCHES PUBLIC ART TOUR, AS GALLERY COSTS POSE BARRIER FOR BRITS TO ENJOY CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

  • Premium French car maker, DS Automobiles, introduces public art tours for drivers to enjoy local culture on the move
  • ‘Art Tour’ initiative comes after research showed that 55% of British public say entrance fees put them off visiting galleries and exhibitions
  • 61% of Brits said that public art enhances the cultural identity of their community, with over half believing that public art has a positive impact on the local economy
  • DS Automobiles public ‘Art Tour’ offers five curated routes across the country for drivers to take in free and accessible art as they drive
  • Routes available to experience on DS Automobiles website here and users are invited to share their travels using #DSArtTour

DS Automobiles has launched a new series of public art tours to allow drivers to experience the best of their local culture while on the road. The five specially curated routes allow drivers to experience the French art of travel across all four corners of the country.

The Art Tour routes, available in London, North-East, North-West, East Anglia, and Central Scotland, provide drivers with greater access to the UK’s diverse range of art collections. The tours showcase a mix of sculptures, installations, and paintings, all free of charge.

The initiative was developed in response to research findings that 55% of British individuals are discouraged from visiting galleries and exhibitions due to entrance fees. Additionally, 33% of respondents expressed a need for more guidance on local art initiatives, galleries, or public art installations.

To access the Art Tour routes, drivers can visit the DS Automobiles website. All tours begin at local DS retailers and can be completed during a DS 24 Hour Test Drive, allowing potential customers to borrow a car for a whole day. The tours also provide recommendations for high-end restaurants and hotels along the way.

The available routes include Manchester to Liverpool, Edinburgh to Glasgow, Newcastle to Durham, Norwich to Aldeburgh, and London.

For example, the Manchester to Liverpool route suggests starting at the DS retailer in Manchester and visiting various art sites such as the street art of Withington, the ‘Dream’ sculpture, Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture on Liverpool University Campus, the abstract ‘Penelope’ in Wolstenholme Square, and the iconic Beatles statue on Liverpool waterfront.

In Scotland, the Edinburgh to Glasgow route allows drivers to see well-known pieces of public art such as The Kelpies near Falkirk, The Hope Sculpture on the Clyde, and the Central Glasgow Mural trail.

Drivers who complete the tours are encouraged to share their experiences using #DSArtTour.

DS Automobiles is known for its close association with the worlds of art and design. The brand offers a range of models, including the DS 3, DS 4, DS 7, and DS 9, each embodying French luxury savoir-faire. DS has been a partner of the Louvre Museum in Paris since 2015 and an official partner of Paris Fashion Week since 2019.

Julie David, Managing Director of DS Automobiles UK, stated, “We hope that our new Art Tour routes offer drivers the opportunity to experience more of the cultural experiences that the UK has to offer, while bringing a little bit of the French Art of Travel to the roads of the UK.”

Research conducted by DS also revealed that 60% of Brits feel uninformed about art and artists, despite acknowledging the positive impact of art on the local economy. Claude Monet was the most recognized artist, while Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ was the most recognizable individual work of art.

DS offers plug-in hybrid and 100% electric models across its range.

DS AUTOMOBILES UNVEILS THE FUTURE OF ITS INTERIORS WITH M.I. 21

  • New interior design manifesto, M.i. 21, demonstrating the future of DS Automobiles interiors will make its public debut at the Révélations exhibition, Paris, from 7 – 11th June 2023
  • The manifesto seeks to rethink the requirements of interiors to allow more space, light and to make them more immersive and comfortable
  • M.i. 21 demonstrates a future without screens in favour of projections onto opaque material to enhance the feel and design of the interior of future DS models
  • DS Automobiles has also revealed a new website for the DS Design Studio to allow further exploration of the M.i. 21 manifesto

DS DESIGN STUDIO is unveiling M.i. 21 to showcase the interiors of future DS Automobile cars. M.i. 21 will be on show to the public for the first time at the Révélations exhibition, Paris, from 7 – 11 June 2023.

M.i. 21 is a research medium and represents the joint thinking of the design and product teams around new concepts, original shapes and technological developments. These developments will be implemented in future DS cars by the end of the decade and will feature redesigned ergonomics, HMI (Human-Machine Interface) with additional developments in colours, materials and finishes (CMF).

Unlike a concept vehicle, a design manifesto incorporates regulatory, industrial and economic demands to ensure faster production. This means that M.i. 21 can act as an important communication tool between engineering and management groups at DS Automobiles, and as a creative stimulus for the DS Design team based at the DS DESIGN STUDIO, Paris.

“Révélations is an event dedicated to expertise, craft and the excellence of craftspeople. We have been involved there since 2019. It is an opportunity to meet an audience sensitive to the avant-garde, beautiful materials, style, expertise and design. It is interesting to garner its impressions, feelings and comments, like a real-life test with experts. Our participation in Révélations also gives us the opportunity to communicate our DS x MÉTIERS D’ART design competition, which allows us to project ourselves even further.”
Thierry Metroz, DS Automobiles Design Director

M.i. 21 – The Future of DS interiors

Designed by Thomas Bouveret – Head of Interior Design, Vincent Lobry – Head of CMF Design, and their teams, the M.i. 21 manifesto reinterprets the language for tomorrow’s interiors supporting the art of travel. This includes:

Light is a key contributor to the in-car sensory experience and contributes to well-being in the cockpit. Utilising both direct and indirect sources to give lightness to the features and bring a new dimension to the materials, it will be adaptive, intelligent, and connected to its environment. The light circles in the doors enhance the materials within the door panels.

To free up more room within the cabin, the architecture of the interior has allowed more space to be freed up by making the dashboard float and by pushing it forwards. The floor is freed up and redesigned, without a central tunnel or centre console, and the glass surfaces are increased to offer more space, freedom and tranquility inside. Storage is inspired by the world of furniture while a subtle play of balance between materials, the sensation of touch and the distribution of volumes takes place to provide a feeling of well-being.

As part of M.i. 21, the DS Design team chose to put an end to the constant one-upmanship of sound system components to gain space. The work illustrated in the manifesto is both more visually rewarding and more in harmony with a fluid and refined style. All sound technology has been brought together on a central feature, an iconic object by design, its positioning in the cabin and the lighting that accompanies it.  The acoustic quality of DS interiors allows sound to become part of the journey: it can amplify the experience or disappear to bring a sense of opulence.

M.i. 21 demonstrates how the human-machine relationship can be redesigned. Exploring how to make interiors less intrusive and more ‘magical’ began on the  DS AERO SPORT LOUNGE in 2020, where the information was projected onto satin cotton rather than shown on intrusive screens. The disappearance of screens was intended to reduce mental overload and limit information to only that which is required. The race for the size or number of screens is a strong trend among all manufacturers. But, turned off, these screens have no real aesthetic value. The idea is to find technology that gives the expected information without sacrificing quality and sensory appeal. With the M.i. 21 manifesto, an innovative solution is being tested by projecting relevant information onto a strip that can be made opaque to display information or become transparent to uncover materials. The only concession to screens are those located in the doors and devoted to rear-facing cameras. The whole system is controlled by voice or by a remote control system located in the central armrest.

  • the artistic dimension

One objective pursued by the M.i. 21 manifesto is to go further in the bespoke offering for customers. Enhanced by a customisable work of art, adaptable to each customer’s taste. The absence of a speaker frees up space in the doors. This space is reinvested to create more storage space and to emphasise and differentiate the cockpit, with a signature and strong graphic design.

Questions to Thierry METROZ, DS Automobiles Design Director

  • What is a manifesto, what are the differences to a concept car?

“A manifesto is a working tool, a real accelerator of change that we use to reflect on the future. Physically, it is a model that normally has to stay secret, because it incorporates a lot of our future.

These models are a link between our vision and our projects in development. They help guide our work and share this research for the brand with the group’s engineering and management. We can also carry out tests to measure the level of attractiveness.

As it is an internal research tool, our teams use it to unleash their creativity while integrating the fact that most of the elements must be able to be put into production. And this is where the big difference lies with a concept car that remains barely, if at all, capable of being manufactured.

Last point, the time factor is important, with a 100% digital design it takes less than 6 months between the first sketch and the finalised model.

The manifestos crystallise our thoughts on a future product right now and gives the roadmap.”

  • What is the message from this manifesto and does it represent the interior of a future model?

“The M.i. 21 manifesto that we are showing at Révélations is important to the history of our brand. It underlines an approach of openness on our part. We are sharing our creative process and vision with a wide audience of connoisseurs, as much in the automotive world as in the world of craft.

We are experiencing a historic transformation of automotive interiors. New architectures related to electric platforms, autonomous driving modes, the arrival of artificial intelligence and, most importantly, the desire of our customers to live a different experience are central to our thinking. The M.i. 21 manifesto illustrates these profound changes, an opportunity for us to share a unique vision of the French art of travel.”

DS DESIGN STUDIO.PARIS, behind the scenes of design

In parallel with its introduction at the Révélations exhibition, the M.i. 21 manifesto is also being unveiled on the new DS DESIGNSTUDIO.PARIS website, www.dsdesignstudio.paris

The DS DESIGN STUDIO.PARIS website is complementary to the DS Automobiles website and allows the public to further explore the design of the brand’s creations, its expertise and its collaborations, including M.i. 21. Through exclusive interviews, they will discover the vision and passion of the women and men who shape the design for the brand’s future projects.

“We want to take more of the general public behind the scenes, like a chef would invite his clientele into the kitchen. Our first motivation is to share our passion with visitors to the site, who only see a part of our designs in our showrooms and occasionally at shows. We want to explain to as many people as possible the genesis of the design of our concept cars and production models. In the LAB section of the DS DESIGN STUDIO.PARIS website, visitors will discover some designs they won’t be expecting to see from a car design centre.”

Thierry METROZ, DS Automobiles Design Director.

The Révélations exhibition is an international biennial for craft and design held in Paris, at the Grand Palais Ephémère.

FROM THE DS E-TENSE FE23 TO THE NEW DS 7 E-TENSE 4X4 360

  • New DS 7 E-TENSE 4×4 360, and all of the brand’s road cars, utilise technology directly derived from Formula E

  • DS Automobiles was the first premium manufacturer in Formula E and utilises the all-electric race series to accelerate the development of its electrified range of road cars

  • DS Automobiles has won the double championship, both the manufacturer’s and driver’s titles, twice – the only team to do so

  • DS Performance have created a mini-series with behind-the-scenes access to the Development team of the Formula E car – watch it here

  • All new cars from DS Automobiles will be 100% electric from 2024

DS Automobiles was the first premium manufacturer to enter Formula E, in 2015, and has won at least one race every season it has competed. In races across America, Asia, Europe and Africa and over three generations of Formula E single seater cars, DS Performance has claimed four world titles, 47 podium and 16 victories in 98 races.

The know-how and experience gained from competing in such a competitive championship against some of the most renowned manufacturers in the world acts as an ‘open-air’ laboratory for DS Performance – fostering innovation to influencer DS road cars.

DS Performance produce a number of the physical parts on the DS E-TENSE FE23 driven by Jean-Eric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne – such as the rear motor unit, including the energy recovery system and transmission, cooling system, electrical system and rear suspension – as well as the software and algorithms that optimise energy management. Everything that DS Performance learns through Formula E feeds into the development of the range of electrified E-TENSE road cars from DS Automobiles.

With its four Formula E titles, the manufacturer is already aiming for a future without CO2 emissions on the road. From 2024, all new cars from DS Automobiles will be 100% electric. As pioneers in energy transition, DS Automobiles continues to progress and innovate in the field of electrification with regular software and hardware evolutions.

DS Performance has created a mini-series that offers a glimpse into the team and the work that goes into the development of the Formula E cars, and how this is translated to the E-TENSE roads cars of DS Automobiles. You can watch all episodes on the DS Performance YouTube channel here.

Béatrice Foucher, CEO of DS Automobiles, said “Since the Formula E championship opened itself up to manufacturers, we have taken the decision to enter this innovative competition with the objective of accelerating the development of our electrified range and growing the profile of DS Automobiles. The expertise we have accumulated since 2015, underlined by our four world titles and the many victories we have taken throughout all the continents visited by the championship, directly benefits our customers thanks to the continuous technology transfer we have put in place. Because it’s our customers who are the real winners from our success in the world’s most prominent 100% electric championship.”

Eugenio Franzetti, DS Performance director, said “Motorsport has always been an extraordinary research and development tool. That’s even more true today as we’re at the heart of an electrical revolution within the car industry. Formula E is a very useful laboratory to accelerate and fine-tune electrification. Thanks to motorsport, DS Performance has developed ultra-powerful energy recovery software, as well as physical components such as the engine and inverter that have become smaller and more efficient as time goes on. All this experience has already been built into our current electrified range and will be found once more in the forthcoming 100% electric cars from the brand.”

Key figures since DS Automobiles entered Formula E:

–             98 races

–             4 Championship titles

–             16 victories

–             47 podiums

–             22 pole positions

  • Participants in Formula E since 2015, DS Automobiles has established itself as the most decorated manufacturer in the all-electric competition as the only two-time double winning team, and has won a record number of titles and podiums
  • With PENSKE AUTOSPORT, Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Vergne, DS Automobiles is at the forefront of the action in Season 9 Formula E

This weekend marks a significant anniversary for DS Automobiles and the world of Formula E. On Sunday 4 June, at the second race of the Jakarta E-Prix, the French manufacturer will start a Formula E race for the 100th time since its involvement in the 100% electric championship began.

DS Automobiles joined Formula E in 2015 and has made its mark on the history of electric motorsport with three generations of Formula E. Heading into its 100th race, DS Automobiles has racked up four Team and Drivers’ championship titles, 16 race victories, 47 podiums and 22 pole positions to its name.

DS Automobiles has established itself as the most decorated manufacturer in Formula E with a podium from nearly every other race it has taken part in over almost eight years. DS Automobiles is also the only team to win a double title twice (in 2019 with Jean-Eric Vergne and 2020 with Antonio Félix Da Costa).

To celebrate this anniversary, reigning world champion Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Vergne – the only two-time champion in the history of the sport – will drive a DS E-TENSE FE23 with a one-off livery to mark the occasion. Jean-Eric Vergne, who is also a DS Automobiles ambassador, will also celebrate 100 races with a bespoke design on his helmet.

The event will be celebrated with a video featuring testimonials from the personalities who have played key a role in the DS Automobiles Formula E adventure on the brand’s social channels. These include Béatrice Foucher, Yves Bonnefont, Alessandro Agag, Jean-Marc Finot, Thomas Chevaucher, Eugenio Franzetti, Jean-Eric Vergne, Stoffel Vandoorne, Antonio Félix Da Costa, Sam Bird and André Lotterer. The video will also include clips of some of the team’s greatest moments including winning the debut title in New York, their second title in Berlin, plus victories in Sanya, Bern, Marrakesh, Monaco, Rome, and Hyderabad.

The story of DS Automobiles continues to unfold, and the two races of the Jakarta E-Prix on 3 and 4 June promise more fine performances from the French team.

Eugenio Franzetti, DS Performance director, said “We’ll be experiencing a historic and moving moment for all of us in Jakarta. First of all, I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who has contributed with such passion and talent to this extraordinary event. Celebrating 100 races in Formula E is truly a milestone, and to do so with the sort of track record that we have accumulated is a source of great pride. A few years ago, DS Automobiles decided to create its DS Performance competition arm, and entered the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. This turned out to be a strategic and winning choice. Thanks to our many victories accumulated over the years, the reputation of DS Automobiles has grown considerably, and we’ve also acquired the technical experience that has helped us to support and accelerate the electrification of the entire brand. These days, the Gen3 single-seaters from DS Performance remain an excellent research laboratory to prepare our next generation of electric road cars. From 2024 in fact, all new cars from DS Automobiles will be 100% electric.”
